The Toki Remake has been released at last, after being originally announced in 2009! Well, I haven't been holding my breath for it, but it was a long wait.Graphically the game was totally remade, in a style and quality that, while not as good as Cuphead (that game is in a class of its own), are really exceptional. High definition graphics, detailed animation, lots of little touches here and there, parallax scrolling (!!! yep, I'm old) and so on. The music was also rearranged, with some catchy tunes based on the original (I love that 2nd stage music), that even speed up during the boss fights. Now to the gameplay. This is as good as I remember it, and it's basically a recreation of the original level design, but please note that it's not 100% identical, just about 95%. There are many slight differences in enemy positioning, rules for power-ups (Helmet and shoes together!), weapon range and rate of fire, and attack patterns (the 1st boss sometimes tackles you, the 4th boss shoots two tusks and its trunk works differently, etc.). So, even if you know the arcade version like the palm of your hand, you'll have to adapt yourself and partially re-learn the game, which is great for a fan.Unfortunately, there is a definite dearth of options and extras. You can choose the difficulty level (4, like in the original, which affects the numbers of lives, credits and the hit points of the enemies) and that's pretty much it. No extra modes, no gallery, nothing. And the endings? When you complete the game on Easy mode you just see a generic Game Over screen, while starting from Medium you get the animated sequence, the congratulatory message, and then it all goes back to the main screen. You don't get the credits, and you don't see that nifty character list from the arcade, not even if you one-credit the game on Hardest or you do it with a single life. What a pity. Now let's consider the physical Retrollector edition, which is a real treat. The box itself is great, with a slip case and a book-style cardboard container, which is reminiscent of old-fashioned computer game boxes, like the Amiga (I guess you remember it if you're playing Toki). Inside we find the game itself in a standard Switch case, a set of stickers, a few illustrations, and a short comic book, in English and French (on the flipside). This one is much appreciated, since it sheds some light on these weird characters (who are these freaks?).Finally, we find a small arcade cabinet made of wood, that you can assemble to fit the Switch in it, playing the game like a small arcade machine. This is pretty suprising, since wood (wood!) is pretty much the last thing I expect to find in a game (unless it's a hentai game). So, in conclusion, a pretty great package. A classic arcade game brought back to life, mainly for its old fans, who will enjoy going back to it once in a while (must beat it with 8 lives left!) improving their high-score.

Beautifully redrawn graphics and animation by Philippe Dessoly, who worked on the Amiga port back in 1991! Sound has equally been given a well love makeover, sounds great. For the extra £5.98 it’s well worth picking up the retrocollector edition, the sticker sheet, mini comic, lithograph prints and mini wooden cabinet to hold your Switch are all a welcome addition to any collection. This at least makes up for the lack of game content. Yes it’s the arcade game in its entirety but it’s such a shame the developers didn’t include any extras. Considering the amount of love put into the remake it’s hard to understand why they didn’t.Why no original arcade version, gallery, history.Have they not played the R-Type and Wonder Boy remakes? Given the £29.99 download price tag it seems a bit steep for a game you can conquer in under an hour! Arcade games were and still are designed to be quick fix money grabbers, this is due to the environment they were intended, arcades, pubs, clubs.. they wanted you to keep pumping coins in.Yes it’s unforgiving and hard, as most 80’s,90’s arcade games were. A lot of games today are easy, holding players hands with assists and easy difficulty settings. I’ll admit that I’ve become soft due to how games are now, back in the day it was what it was, we just played the games and got good at them.. no complaints about it being hard as I’ve seen in a few reviews.Time to man up and improve your gaming skills :)

I've been expecting for this game to come out for quite a while now, so I'm happy it didn't become vaporware.Pros:-great for any Toki fan who was playing the game +20 years ago-extras in Collector's Edition make it appealing. Arcade stand is actually wood and not cardboard!-beautiful graphics-simple, yet solid gameplayCons:-might be too hard for some players. This is old school arcade action, so the game was designed back then to munch on lives and coins-too short for its cost (It has 4 difficulty settings, and as an experienced player I finished it on Medium/Normal in about an hour). Playing it on hard or hardest will certainly increase the life expectancy of the game (or trying to finish iton one credit alone will increase it though)-lack of ability to switch back and forth the graphics of the old version-lack of an art gallery and a few other extrasStill, it's an awesome game, but at its current price it might be better for people who really want it, as the price and how short or how difficult the game might be might fluster some people.

It's beautiful with the original soundtracks upgraded too. The included cabinet is wooden and there are few cards, stickers, a comic book and of course a physical copy of the game. Nothing extra in-game except of an Easy Mode. I went with the original mode and took me about 45 minutes to complete it in one sitting. Does it worth the money? Only if you are a collector who played this as a kid wanting to boost your collection with a nostalgic wave. For new players I'd suggest waiting for a digital sale. I don't regret buying it, I knew what I was going to get from this.

So, back in the day, I used to play this on the Amiga loved it then, saw this for the switch knew I was getting one for Christmas and had to have this game. The pack includes some cracking extras, the arcade box is a fiddly experience, I watched YouTube then attempted mine (I have flu so this is my excuse) but remember the band's!! The cards are a nice addition as is the comic, I have enjoyed playing the game again. If you played it as a kid, you'll remember and bring back some good times. The floppy disk has gone and we are up to date ??

It's a good rather than great version of an arcade game. Short but worth playing. The extras are all nice to haves.

I'm very happy with my order as this is the best price for the collector's edition of the game.
