So this game was released as part of the series 25th Anniversary, and I must say, it celebrates it perfectly. I've only got into the series in the last few years, and one of the things I love about it is the soundtracks. So when I heard about this game, I was both confused and happy. Only a company like Square-Enix can come out with a mad sounding and mad looking game. The game is essentially a Rhythm game, however, incorporates some basic JRPG elements (like Dissidia 012 with the one-on-one fighting/JRPG hybrid). The game features a very basic storyline, where you simply just have to play along to music and collect Rhythmia to make the world a better place so to speak. Of course, the storyline isn't important at all to this game, as the selling point is the music. The game uses chibi-style artwork, and it gives the game a really cute look to it. There are 3 play modes in the game:- Series Mode: This mode contains music from FFI to FFXIII, where you will play 5 songs from each game, which each feature a different style of gameplay (You will mainly be using this mode when you start the game). Each song will have a different play style:-- Opening Sequence: Tap along to the opening song from the chosen game,-- Battle Music Sequence (BMS): There are 4 different lanes, but you can tap, slide or hold anywhere on the screen. You have to fight iconic enemies from the game, and the more you defeat in the song, the more items you can get.-- Event Music Sequence (EMS): You have to watch the cursor as it moves along a path on screen, and you have to tap, slide and hold as soon as it hovers over the icons on screen. Behind the notes, a scene will be playing, showing highlights from an FF game. (however, the first 3 games have original japanese subtitles, so these may not be so intreging to the player)-- Field Music Sequence (FMS): In this mode, your lead character will be walking across a landscape, and you have to get as many Critical/Great hits as possible in order to get items from characters and moogles. There is only one lane, but you now have to move the stylus up and down the screen when holding a note.-- Closing Sequence: Tap along to the closing song from the chosen game.- Challenge Mode: This mode contains the BMS, EMS and FMS music from Series mode, and you can play along to any of them (as long as you've played them in Series mode first). Extra tracks and higher difficulties can also be unlocked in this mode, the more you play the game.- Chaos Shrine: This mode will contain FMS and BMS music, including some exclusive Special tracks, where you can earn bonus items and shards, which unlock bonus playable characters. The games JRPG elements allows you to level up characters, equip abilities and equip items, and character elements such as HP and Strength can also influence how well you perform in the game. Of course, if you're good at rhythm games, then most of the abilities and items will prove to be useless, but they are really handy for those who may struggle with these sort of games, or just want to get 100% across everything. As well as this, you can also unlock character cards (which features a brief character description and chibi artwork) and you can unlock music and videos in the games theatre. The music selection is great, and would appeal to any FF fan. Some music tracks from the series including 'Blinded by Light - FFXIII' have also been remixed, and used as music for the games menus. Overall, there are 77 playable tracks in the game (51 BMS, FMS and EMS; 26 Opening/Closing [Series mode only]; 12 Unlockable). About 9/10 tracks are great to play along to, however, there is that small fraction which aren't really that enjoyable. However, Square-Enix are also releasing music DLC though the Nintendo e-shop (however, the store must be accessed from the games start screen) which cost 90p (GBP) for a single track. There are a few great DLC tracks out and still to be released, however, Nintendo's payment system can be a real big inconvinence if you just want to purchase the odd one or two tracks, as you have to add at least £10 to the e-Shop's virtual wallet to buy something.Overall, the music is great, the gameplay is addictive and fun, and anyone who likes game soundtracks (new and old) or even just the gameplay would most likely enjoy this game. However, it's the FF fans that are going to enjoy this game the most (well... unless they can't stand rhythm games. Then it's not worth it). I would definetly recommend this game to both music game fans and FF fans.

If I was to sum up Theatrhythm in one work it would be Addictive! Mainly aimed at Final Fantasy fans Square-Enix have taken the Elite Beat Agents idea and put a Final Fantasy spin on it. In a nut shell Theatrhythm plays music from Final Fantasy 1-13 across three types of levels designs against three difficulty settings, throughout the whole game which you will be tapping and swiping the screen in time with the music. What keeps you and everyone else interested apart from the music is how much there is to unlock. You start the game with a handful of characters, music and equipment but as you play you will unlock and unlock new items, characters, extra's and levels all the time which is what grabbed my attention.Aside from loving the music from Final Fantasy I wanted to unlock every character, beat every level with a perfect or near enough score and level up each character to the maximum 99.Theatrhythm is split between three levels, they are as follows:Field Music: By far the easiest of the three your chosen character will walk/run along a field, the distance he travels depends who his level/equipment and how well you preform.Battle: In the style of the original Final Fantasy battle systems the music will come at you in 4 lines for each of your 4 chosen characters. During this time you will be fighting enemies and a boss for each song. How much damage you do again depends on level/equipment and how well you preform.Event: the lines will come at you in more of a spiral motion while a FMV cut scene plays in the background.Once you have played for a while you will also unlock a Chaos mode which will feature the Field Music and Battle stage. Here you will have to do your best in the field to get as far as you can to unlock bosses 2 or 3, if you fail to reach the marker you will face boss #1. Then you will play the battle mode, reaching and beating the boss will unlock better items used to unlock new characters. You are scored on everything, getting a better score is more a personal achievement and won't really unlock anything more than completing the level will get you. Scores range all the way up to SSS rank which involves hitting everything perfectly with no items equipped. That game itself isn't without its issues. I found that if you missed a tap on a quicker harder mode sometimes the game will not register some of your next few taps as the game momentarily freezes and that seriously affects your score and health bar and it's quite frustrating.Theatrhythm is repetitive but in a very good way. Fans of the music and games will welcome this title with open arms, the RPG element separates it from games like "Elite Beat Agents" or "Guitar Hero" and the unlock-able extras like cards and FMV's are an added bonus. If you are a fan of the music from Final Fantasy and you have a 3DS this game is a must. I have been playing for hours and have finally unlocked everything there is to do and I still want to play it.One last thing there are some DLC which can be purchased at the Nintendo shop the first for a game on the 3DS. The DLC for this game are extra songs come at a price which I felt is too step for what it is.

Wow what can I say, say what you want about Square-Enix lately but they do pull out some gems, firstly they moulded my favourite fighter on the PSP Dissidia 012 - mixing a brilliant fighter with a RPG. Now they have answered my prays, with an Awesome Rhythm - RPG hybrid - Theatrhyhmn Final Fantasy. This game features Classic musical pieces from Final Fantasy's 1 - 13, this game packs a lot of content, the main mode 'Series' puts you in the task of complete each FF from the Opening Theme to the ending theme, when you complete each song you get points called 'Rhymia' which unlocks extra songs/crystal Shards (That unlock extra characters!) meaning there is a TON to unlock! Now there are 3 types of play in Theatrhythm - FMS (Field Music Sequence)BMS (Battle Music Sequence) and EMS (Event Music Sequence) these all have different play types FMS you tap and slide the cursor to attain maximum points by hitting critical and getting a perfect chain. BMS - is where you party of up to four fight different monsters again you tap and slide the stylus, but keep missing you HP (Hit points) will decrease and if you hit 0 its all over and finally EMS is music played over different cutscenes from the specific game. The games graphics are VERY cutsy - Square went with a 'Chibi' style a Japanese word for 'Small/Short' all the characters have tiny bodies and a cute design. The 3D adds a bit of depth, but its not necessary but its thereThere is a RPG element, you can level up each character but complete songs, which increases the grades of each of the status (Strength, Magic, Agility and Luck) the higher the levels higher the points and item drops. You can equip different abilities to help you and equip items to help in battle if you mess up. There is a lot of Extras, such as a music player, and MASSIVE Card collecting feature where you get cards with information on different characters, creatures, enemies of the FF universe. As I said the Reply value is massive, there is a mode called Chaos Spire - Which tasks the player to complete random songs on harder difficulties. There are 3 difficulties - Basic, Extreme and Master - which increases the speed of the song and adds more challenging strokes. This game is ESSENTIAL for Final Fantasy Music lovers and its a top notch rhythm game with TONS of replay value, top notch songs, a cute art style and a awesome hybrid of Rhythm and a RPG. With Add on content already available and more in the future there is A LOT to love about Theatrhythm.

This is a game for Final Fantasy fans AND people who have never played a Final Fantasy game in their life. The Final Fantasy franchise has some of the most haunting, catchy, beautiful tunes out of any computer game.Theatrhythm allows you tap your way into restoring harmony and saving the world in the process. It is basically an "Elite Beat Agents" or "Guitar Hero" type game with RPG elements. The game brings you through lush surroundings as you create a party of four warriors to "Rhythm" their way against baddies and monsters. You will have to complete rhythm-based mini segments that are HIGHLY addictive. There are three types of rhythm games:Field Music stages - you have to travel as far as youcan to discover extra "loot." This becomes easier when you hit the crucial notes and Chocobos (funny giant big bird like creatures) help you out.Battle stages - you fight baddies in the usual Final Fantasy battle mode. Except you kill the bad guys by hitting sequences to score damage.Event stages - you have to keep the rhythm against beautiful sequences of the "emotional" parts of the game. This game still has the RPG elements and that is what makes it so brilliant!! Characters gain strength and move onto higher levels that allow them to beat the crap out of the enemies as well as use magical abilities to call allies.I really love this game. It is innovative, quirky and touching at times. Also the 3D element gives it that extra oomph!

Looking for a lot of songs to play with? I love music/rhythm games and I've tried a few, but none has the huge amount of song "Theatrhythm" has. But it's not just about the quantity, it's also about the quality. This game is a celebration of 25 years of RPG history. It might not look so appealing to those who aren't familiar with Final Fantasy games, and let me say if you don't like the series, you'd rather pass on this one, for "Theatrhythm" is all about Final Fantasy. Unlike "Dissidia", which can stand as an independent fighting game (kind of xD), this rhythm game is for Final Fantasy lovers. However, if you don't mind the series, you still might want to take a look a it: three different stage types, all with three different commands to input to succeed in a song, more than 70 songs (plus optional add-on content), collectable cards, tens of characters to choose from... Hell, even each song can be beaten in a few different ways! Not to talk about the difficulty, which varies on the level of the character. To be honest, it is a fine rhythm game, and a must to all Final Fantasy lovers. Truth be told, the only downside is that you don't like the series.

I love Final Fantasy and I love rhythm games, so it seemed like this game was made for me! The game has a really good range of difficulty levels; from very easy to your guitar hero expert style difficulty level! (Which I was glad of because I sometimes find rhythm games too easy)The only thing that has annoyed me is having to play through the "basic" and "expert" levels before you can unlock the "ultimate" difficulty setting (which is the only one that is really a challenge). However, the game is so beautiful and nostalgic that actually I don't really mind playing each level 3 times, but it would have been nice to have the option to choose your difficulty level from the start. Also,I don't really understand the point of the RPG elements (they don't really seem to link to the rhythm in any major way) but maybe I just haven't figured that out yet!Apart from that - beautiful game, lovely graphics (the 3D is really nice on this game), lovely music (obviously!) If you love Final Fantasy then you will love this game!

I love this game! It provided a lot of entertainment for quite some time. Being able to listen to my favourite OST pieces from the games as well as being able to watch cutscenes in the background brought moments of nostalgia. The gameplay is simple and easy to follow so you'll have little trouble getting the hang of things. Despite the simplicity, it can be challenging when trying the harder difficulties but it makes you concentrate harder in order to finish the songs with the best ranks possible, and to practice more if you don't succeed. Which is something I like.My only gripe that I can think of about the game is that some of the songs don't last their full original duration time.Apart from that,it was very enjoyable and would recommend to anyone who is a Final Fantasy fan.

Theatrhym: Final Fantasy is one of those games that hooks you until you find something else to play. It's a game for fans of final fantasy but it's also a game for anyone looking for something to play in few minutes when you don't have time for a long play. The music is excellent and it brings memories of all final fantasy titles, nostalgics will love it.The system is correct, it's a beat game like Elite Beat Agents, but the depth added with the rpg elements only complicates things, you end using the default abilities and items.Recommended for those who love final fantasy games or just want something fun to play for short times. If you are looking for a RPG with some depth better look somewhere else.

The second I saw that this was available to pre order, I jumped at it! It arrived this morning, on day of release( for once) including the pre order edition of the stylus :)I must say, for a big FF fan this is. Winner! The music is unchanged, and the gameplay is simple yet so addictive! I got 3 perfect chains on my first go but they are easy until you complete a play through then you can challenge the music on harder settings later on. The characters are cute and fun to watch, with customisable items and magic that help you throughout your journey.I will be hooked on this game for months, seeing as we also get extra DLC content. If you love FF as much as me, get this now!

Since i completed Zelda, my 3DS has been abandoned, Paying £200 for a console that i never used Because of the lack of good games. So when i heard that a final fantasy game was coming out i was so happy, then i sore the game trailer and it looked Bad! So bad in fact that i had no intention of buying this game, But then i gave it a chance, and I'm so glad that i did :) Final Fantasy has always had an amazing sound track, that's what makes this game fantastic. The Sprites are adorable, and there's even RPG elements thrown in just for good measure. If you have a 3DS and you're a Final Fantasy fan, Buy this game! Now i just need good games for my PS Vita :'(

Amazing fun especially if you are familiar with the music and battle styles of the many final fantasy games. Bought it as a gift for my girlfriend and she loves it. I am (unfortunately) reviewing the sequel here, that being Curtain Call, as the seller sent me the wrong game (which they claimed they did not even stock) but it was loved none the less. If the sequel is this good then this will surely be a delight for the FF fans!

12.10.2012

I honestly wasn't expecting more than a 10-15 hour quickie with this. At current, my 3DS has clocked 67 hours play time. It's my most played game on the system, 25 hours ahead of my second most played, I'm still not even close to being bored of it, I've still got a lot to unlock, and I've barely touched the DLC. Any fans of either Final Fantasy or Rhythm games should definitely pick this up. Well worth every penny.

i just adore it! loved hearing the modern remakes of older ff songs. on the modes where you have the screen with your 4 charactrs with 4 different ''lanes'' for the indicators to move along, its pretty pointles as you dont tap the touch pad any different but overall, i loved the game! quite similar to rythem heaven but with much less activities but it has a million times more depth <3

27.9.2016

This rhythm game is not only additive but also very fun. All your favourite tunes from FF7 Theme to FF13 lightning theme. All your favourite characters come together to join you in this rhythm journey. The cross between rhythm and battle is glorious and the quality of it is amazing. The soundtrack could not be any better. A must have for all Final Fantasy Lovers

20.7.2014

Well, if you don't mind buying a couple of your favourite songs then this is for you! The delivery was early for me which is a bonus and I got the manual for it as well. It would have been better to have the game case, but the game itself worked like a charm. I recommend this to final fantasy lovers :o
