I have three of these boards. One of them is over 20 years old, the second I've had for a year and the latest is 1 day old. The boards are super, really good but I read the negative reviews of them and it is pretty clear that those with issues are not aware of how to deal with a chopping board! You MUST oil the board before you use it. It's all very well to say that wood is safer than plastic - but only if looked after and prepared properly. If you don't oil them, any water based liquid - and that could be shellfish juice, beef juice etc. will seep into the porous wood - fast on first use. Oh, BTW the reason for four stars is simple.Firstly the instructions below and the necessity for following them could so easily be printed on a single sheet of paper and included in the packaging. Why T&G don't do this is a complete mystery to me. Secondly, the edges and the finger holds are very sharp, easily sharp enough to cause real discomfort until you sand the board as in step 1 below. Read on if you want to know how to have these T&G boards looking good for decades. To do this buy 1 litre of food grade or pharmaceutical grade mineral oil, (there are lots to choose from on Amazon) and follow the instructions below:1. Sand your board. 10 minutes with some 120 grit or finer sandpaper will both smooth the cutting surface further, and allow you to take the sharp edges off the finger holds and the edge of the board. You won't regret putting in that time.2. Oil the board. Slather it in the stuff. Keep it on a level surface. Do not use vegetable oil, coconut oil, olive oil etc. They will ALL (eventually) go rancid. Do use mineral oil as stated above. Use some that's food safe, FDA approved, or labelled as cutting board oil etc.3. Now it's swimming in mineral oil! Go away for 45 minutes and come back. As if by magic the surface will be clear - yep, it's absorbed it all.4. turn the board over and do it to the other side.5. repeat 2-4 until it just won't take any more, it will take progressively longer for the oil to absorb.6. Wipe the oil off. If you are as OCD as I am, then stand the board up on the short (end grain) ends in some sort of tray or tub and let it soak up oil from the ends, as much as it wants.7. Wipe the board down with some kitchen paper, and wash it.The board will NOT swell or split the joints during these operations (at least none of mine ever have) - if you soak it in water instead it will be scrap in a day or two. Your call! You will find the board is now about 400g-500g heavier than it was previously if you care to weigh it. That oil is absorbed into the interior of the wood and will prevent other liquids (such as shellfish juice) from getting in amongst the wood fibres. Every now and then, which may vary from every few months to a year or two, you will notice the surface is getting a little dry and tends to absorb water when you wash it. Time to let it thoroughly dry off, then put a little (note - little, not a lot) of oil on the surface, rub it around and let it absorb. If you followed 1-7 above, it will take ages and not absorb much, because the vast majority of the oil is still in there, working to keep your board in great condition.I'm betting that if the negative reviewers had followed these steps, there wouldn't be any negative reviews. These are great boards, and amazing value for money (£29.99 for large one) as I write. But it's a piece of bare kiln dried wood that gets used in a tough environment and does require care and attention to ensure it remains in good shapeOh - yes, they are heavy. 5.5kg after oiling so carrying them is a two handed operation. If you ever think the surface is looking a little scratched, just get the sandpaper out again!

We have gone through a lot of chopping boards through the years, they either mark badly where knife cuts have scored the surface, (especially bread knives on plastic) or the block sections start to split open leaving then liable to bacteria ingress, even though they were oiled. Therefore we splashed out a bit more cash on this one and am so glad we did. It's very well made and regularly oiled (I think that's a key to longevity). It's large enough to keep piles of chopped vegetables on it whilst doing more but not too big as I originally thought it might be. It's tough as old boots as long as you respect the fact that it's organic wood and don't immerse it in water, plus it's double sided and should last for years

Excellent chopping board. I didn't really think it would make that much difference what you chopped ingredients on, but I was wrong. This is a very nice board which keeps your knives sharp for longer and (so far at least) has handled everything I've cut on it and cleaned up really nicely afterwards (and I've chopped a lot of things that usually leave marks on plastic boards). The board is also nice and sturdy so everything feels secure when you are chopping, mincing, dicing, peeling, etc.I would recommend getting some oil to care for it if you don't already have some; I used the one that is suggested when you are browsing this item and it has worked well so far.Excellent item and I wouldrecommend it highly.

in keeping with the majority of positive comments about this here "TV CHEF'S CHOICE"LARGE CHOPPING BOARD I can only parrot the same sentiments , this is a mostsuitably sized board & heavy too which I find to be a pre-requisite , its colour isstunning and it has now become a striking and noticeable piece of furniturein its new home , I will do my due diligence in the maintenance andup keep of my new board to keep it looking as fresh as possible ...Worth every PRIVATELY OWNED CENTRAL BANK ISSUED PENNY !!! lol

Just the job.I have a few expensive sharp knives and dont want to mark my work top. A big heavy board like this means you can protect your work surface and protect the edge of you knife, and still have working space.I have a thin chopping board that hasnt lasted despite oiling. In my opinion a thicker piece of wood will hold more oil and wont dry out so quickly if you forget to oil it. I use virgin olive oil once a month or so

well, if you want to buy something of quality that is going to last a life time then get one of these!Don't buy a cheap chopping board that is going to warp and twist in six months, pay a little extra and you will not regret it one bit...oh, and its British made from British beech!one more thing, don't be fooled as to thinking plastic is safer, its rubbish, real wood is much safer...think of the old fashioned butchers block!

fairly large, heavy but boy cutting dicing and chopping on this board makes my cooking so much easier. you will certainly need a larger kitchen surface area to place this board. as for all wooden boards, oil them up, keep it nice and dry so it wont crack. anyone who likes their cooking and enjoy cooking, this is it, otherwise walk to TKMAX find yourself decent wooden board.

All I can do is to re-iterate all that has been said before, it is a very substantial wooden chopping board, made well, it looks good, heavy, so it wont move all over the place when in use. Mine needed to be rubbed slightly where the machine had cut out the indentations and so, a slight burr on the edges, but nothing at all major. I love it!!

I have used it constantly for 7 months with damascus steel chefs knife and there isn't a mark on it. Does not stain or scratch yet does not blunt knives its a miracle!HOWEVER! It does not like washing up- as it is very very heavy to lug around and if you soak it in water too much (like I did) the boards start to come apart.

After the recently purchased and already warping IKEA disaster, this is real value for money. A great chopping board in a decent size. Only one suggestion: it would be nice to have a non-slip area to avoid slipping on the kitchen surface.

I've had a T&G chopping board before and it was excellent and lasted me years. I brought this new one because it was bigger, Perfect size and looks stylish. Fully recommend getting one of these. Slightly pricey, But you wont regret it.

A really solid item. Be warned though it is surprisingly heavy. This certainly looks as if it will last for a lifetime with proper care. I'd advise oiling it lightly at regular intervals to protect and preserve the wood.

I wore out this board's predessor, and decided it was time to get a new one when slivers of wood came peeling off. This one is much better . Both sides can be used ; it is easy to clean and is giving excellent service.

Heavy and sturdy this chopping board is just what i needed to replace my old one. It's so hard to find a good chopping board and this one looks way more expensive than it is. It can also be used both sides.

ProsFab quality wood, no warping or discolouration. T&G quality seems to be very good.ConsThe oil to season the board is quite expensive, I have taken to using olive oil, seems to work very nicely :)
