I've had one of these TopGourmet boards for a few years now, and it is by far the best chopping board I have. I'm mystified by the occasional negative reports in other reviews.Previously sold under the 'Epicurian' brand, it is manufactured from highly compressed wood fibre, which allows the edge of a knife blade a bit of give and something to cut against. Yes it will get tiny marks on the surface from cuts. This is a good thing. If it was so hard that it had no give and didn't mark, it would be blunting the heck out of your knives and be noisy and jarring to use - like a glass board. As it is, I find it the perfect balance of being tough enough not to mark excessively, but with just enough give for the knife to be able to cut against it and to be pleasant and fast to use. It is more noisy than soft plastic boards, but it marks less, and is far more heat tolerant. You can use this as a trivet or mat for resting hot pans on, and I also find it great as an oversized spatula for extracting pizzas from the oven. The manufacturer says it is safe up to 175C, 350F, though I've put some very hot roasting pans on mine with no discernible ill effect.I don't get any of the 'soot' particles reported by some others, though if the surface is starting to look a little rough just give it a quick scrub with a green scouring scotchpad. That will remove any loose bits, but it is truly not a problem. Once run in, you'll only need to do this once every month or so - for the rest of the time the dishwasher gets it perfectly clean. These boards are hard, and may slide about on highly polished surfaces such as granite. I have wooden work surfaces, and the board doesn't move at all. If sliding around is a problem, just put a slightly damp cloth underneath and it won't budge. This has the added benefit of reducing any noise, and is also a useful trick if you find yourself attempting to serve dinner on a boat in 'lively' conditions.I like these because they are relatively thin, albeit very solid. I have had absolutely no problems with the board warping - it is perfectly flat after 3 years of use and almost daily dishwasher sessions. I think the fact that you often see these in many big-brand restaurants as a serving platter for pizzas, steaks etc speaks volumes about their robustness, hygiene, heat tolerance, and usability. The price is a little eye-watering I admit, but they are worth saving up for or searching for bargains as they are really versatile and should last many years. If you should be unlucky enough to have a problem with a genuine TopGourmet board (there's a few fakes and me-too's around), I'm pretty sure they provide a reasonable length warranty and Amazon are extremely good at handling returns of sub-standard goods.Overall these are hygienic, durable, kind to knives, dishwasher proof, heat-resistant, and environmentally friendly. Short of finding a board that can walk the dog, do the ironing, and send your Mum flowers on her birthday, I don't think you can get much better.

The tag on the board says you will love it.....and you really will. I have been using these since 2011 and I have to say I absolutely love them. This board is slightly smaller than my others but the material is the same - and that is what sells it. When you are choosing chopping boards you used to have a choice of 3 options:Glass- Very Easy to clean as very smooth and never marked but it blunted my Wusthoff knives (or any for that matter) very very quickly. And they are noisy when chopping.Plastic - these are great when new but as soon as you use them they get scored and scratch and are just bacteria traps. A pain to clean, look horrible and unhygenic --- not an option.Wood - Nice to look at initially, great for chopping, wood has properties which make them better at dealing with bacteria....however they are heavy and prone to warping / splitting. I had a block that was so heavy - a small bit of grit underneath scored my worktops. They are also porous and age with cutting.Enter this wood fibre chopping board ....... it is light because it is the thickness of a glass chopping. I can store 4 of these in the same space that i used to store one wooden board. It is easy to wash, in fact it can go in the dishwasher (although I do not tend to).It is knife friendly in that my knives stay sharper longer as opposed to Glass. It does mark over time -- but then itis a chopping board.....the knife marks all blend in.it does not chip however and stays smooth. You can put hot pots on it (upto 176 degrees C)They look great and we often use as a presentation platter For me this is a wonder material which is perfect in the kitchen - I am slowly replacing my old wooden ones, as and when I can afford. They are expensive ------ but for the amount of use it gets I think they are a bargain.......Just check the size you want as this chopping is a bit on the small side for me (or rather it will double as a cheese board)

These chopping boards are amazing! I've had mine a few months now and use it every day, yet it is not tainted, warped or not stained (despite cutting beetroot & other highly pigmented foods on it), and is barely even marked from cutting.I highly recommend this board, it is really worth the price. A previous reviewer commented that it isn't very attractive, but I think that depends on your taste. I quite like it, as it's very neutral & simple. It would go well with a fairly modern kitchen, and is available in black too. A well designed & unblemished chopping board is so much more attractive than a stained, warped traditional board,no matter how beautiful the wood was when you first got it!------------------------------Added 29th March 2012:I have now owned the same board for almost 5 years and it is still going strong! It is starting to show its age more these days but still looks in better condition than any other chopping board I've owned & used for more than a year, and I have no qualms about how hygienic it might be as I often am with older chopping boards. It has been well used (& sometimes abused! e.g. leaving it sitting in a wet patch on the worksurface) & washed both by hand & in the dishwasher, and it still hasn't picked up any significant smell, stains or damage. The areas which get the most use look slightly more worn than the other parts, there are a few patches of minor discolouration, and the board is not perfectly flat any more (but it is far from being noticeably warped), but for almost 5 years of very regular use I think that's pretty impressive. I would absolutely recommend this board to anyone!

This board feels like wood and looks almost like slate, and in practical terms is something between the two.Its claim to be ‘knife friendly’ presumably refers to it not being like slate, marble, glass, etc. in blunting your sharp knives. The negative side of that is that sharp knives, especially bread knives, do leave a mark on the cutting surface. That seems a shame, as – unmarked – the board is smart enough to sit on the table at your posh dinner party, adorned with cheese, a few green and red salad items, sliced mushroom, etc.I have a solution: use one side for serious cutting and take care of the other for display purposes. Even when the board is new and relatively unmarked,it is easy to know which side is which, as one side has the word ‘epicurean’ written across the top and the hole at top left, the other has the hole at top right and no word.Since the material claims to be dishwasher safe, heat resistant to 350F/176C, and to have been used in skateboard ramps (!) it seems it should resist most domestic wear and tear other than those sharp knives. It offers a ‘Lifetime limited warranty’. The ‘epicureanusa’ website explains what that means – workmanship and materials only; ‘normal wear and tear, misuse, or failure to follow care instructions’ are excluded. The website tells you what to do if you want to make a warranty return. The item is made in the USA.

Many years ago now, I worked for a high end kitchenware company, which sold some very nice - and expensive - knives. As and when I could afford them, I would buy one with my staff discount. They are now old, treasured friends. But they need looking after - never, ever, use a glass, marble or slate chopping board. It blunts knives. Don't use plastic - although they are kind to knives, they mark and they harbour bacteria unless scrupulously cleaned at high temperatures. Wood - wood's okay, but tends to warp with time, marks and can be very heavy if you want a substantial block. It's kind to knives though. And until fairly recently, these were your chopping board options. However,Epicurean's wood fibre boards combine the advantages of polymer boards with those of wooden boards. And they look much more modern whilst doing so. These are kind to knives, are dishwasher safe and are lightweight and easy to move around - important for me, as MS means I have a noticeable weakness in one hand/arm. For me, these combine performance with practicality, and having tried one, will probably replace my existing wooden boards with this style as and when the others come to the end of their lives. This will also mean I have time to save for the rather hefty price tags these come in at.

I've recently purchased three Epicurean chopping boards. One large one (15 x12") on sale in Amazon, and based on the quality of that one I got two further in this 12"x9" size via my milkman (of all people!) as his dairy was selling them at £11.50.All I can say is that these are the best chopping boards I've had. I'm no gourmet cook, but these are used every day at home and I think the quality of them is great. Having used them for 2 months now I'd always buy these...and I'd pay the full price, they are worth it.I have thrown out my warped cheapo IKEA boards, there is just no comparison. They feel very solid, yet they are not heavy. Both the black and the natural colours look great, they wash really easily, and don't harbour bacteria (unlike conventional wooden boards). As they are heat resistant, you can also use them to stand hot pans or serving dishes on. So far they don't appear to be showing any knife marks.I've had no problems with warping or curling up at the corners as another reviewer mentioned.I don't have a dishwasher, so can't comment on how dishwashing may affect their appearance/performance, but all in all they are a great quality product that I think will last for years.

I've had 3 black Epicurean chopping boards in different sizes for 6 years now; they are all used on a daily basis, washed in the dishwasher each time and still absolutely perfect. I'm really surprised that other reviewers have had issues with shedding fibres; I see no evidence of any disintegration on my boards or on the food that I chop (including raw chicken breast that would definitely show up black fibres).Yesterday I ordered a natural wood coloured board as a present for a friend and it arrived today. ( I guess I'm being very lucky because I see that another customer didn't get the natural colour when ordered).I think these boards are truly excellent pieces of kitchen equipment and by far the best chopping boards I've ever come across. My husband is quite a serious cook and very particular about looking after his sharp knives and the Epicurean boards are not only kind to knives but light to handle, and, best of all, dishwasher proof. I really can't fault them in any way and am genuinely staggered by some of the negative comments. Must have been a rogue batch or something. Shame cos these boards make kitchen life a LOT easier.

Epicurean Kitchen Series Cutting Board wood is one very nice cutting board which has the unique ability of not harbouring bacteria, odour or stains which makes this one excellent cutting board. It is made from a special natural wood fibre which does not mark even with constant cutting which makes this brand for even the busiest of kitchens and that includes working kitchens e.g. hotel, restaurant etc.I also love the slimness and lightness of the cutting board which is ideal for storage as it will slip into the slimmest of slots. There is also a hole in the top corner which is there to allow the user to have a firm grip especially with the board being thin and smooth.I actually use the hole to slip the board unto a hook which is convenient for my own kitchen. The board can stand a temperature of up to 170 degrees, which means it perfect for cutting hot meats, this allows it to be suitable for washing in the dishwasher, which is unusual for boards made from wood.Epicurean Kitchen Series Cutting Board wood made by Top Gourmet is an excellent cutting board which also can be used for presentation.Happy to recommend.

This cutting board surprised me as I was unsure of its capability to begin with. The Board claims to be dishwasher safe, heat resistant to 176 degrees centigrade, knife friendly, made from non porous wood fibre and coloured black. The tough material it is made of, is even widely used in commercial kitchens and the leisure industry. Not a colour I would choose for chopping food, however I am won over! My usual boards are white and textured, and difficult to keep completely clean. The knives leave scoring marks with food lodged in them, so my boards must be scoured. The Epicurean Board is black, smooth, light and feels solid and very sturdy in use.I have used it several times now and I am so delighted with it,because I am able to get clean cuts right through veg and fruit. Washing the Epicurean Board is extremely easy as it's smoothness helps to ensure that there isn't a residue of food remaining, or deep gouges from chopping. This Board is a must have, my own boards are now redundant!

This is the best chopping board I have ever had - well second only to the bigger version I bought because this one is so good. There's a lovely feel to it when you cut against it using super sharp knives (and why would you use any other sort?). It does not drag or cut into the board and gives a clean feel to cut. After two years of daily use yes I have some knife marks on the board but if there were none it would be too hard for the blades. It is as flat as the day I unwrapped it, betrays no trace of the many cloves of garlic or chilli that have been chopped on it and no stains from beetroot which I often prepare. I have not had any problems with the board slipping, have washed it in my dishwasher without mishap and it is easy to clean in the washing up bowl. The black is perfect in my modern kitchen but it is the way it works that means I often recommend this to my friends in that sort of raving way that makes them wonder if I have gone a bit mad.

Eco friendly, this chopping board looks great in a modern kitchen and can be used for both chopping and to protect work surfaces as hot pans can be placed directly on it. I was delighted that the paring knife did not score or scratch when chopping onions and other vegetables and it washed well afterwards. The wood fibre chopping board is a far superior alternative to our plastic chopping boards which mark when using a knife and our glass chopping boards, which are rather noisy when it comes to chopping food. This board is also lighter and thin enough to store in the tightest of spaces (it was delivered in a cardboard outer and slipped effortlessly through our letterbox!) Made of wood fibre, these boards are solid. They may be pricey but I am converted! Please note, this particular board is rather on the small size and I will need to upgrade to the larger size to take full advantage of its great qualities.

This chopping board is great in many ways:* it's roughly the size of an A4 piece of paper - smaller than my other chopping boards - but this is brilliant because it means it will fit into my dishwasher easily;* thin, so doesn't take up too much space and can be stacked easily in drawers;* wears well - I've used these boards for years and whilst they do get knife marks they aren't prominent and 'blend' into the board;* the surface is kind to knives;* it doesn't slip around while chopping, and the finger hole makes it easy to pick up despite its low profile.I've knocked a star off because, over time, I find that little slices of the board are lifted when chopping (especially with a very sharp knife)and occasionally you can end up with tiny slivers of black on your knife and your food. Nonetheless, this is still my favourite brand of board and I prefer it above all others.

This is definitely the best chopping board I've used. Definitely worth the money and I shall be buying more. Knives do make marks in the board but that's to be expected unless you want a product that blunts your knives. It's nothing like a wooden board though, stays far smoother and no big grooves where bacteria can breed. Dishwasher safe which is brilliant so you know that even after chopping raw chicken it will come clean. Other reviewers have mentioned the chemical smell and I was aware of this for the first 3 or 4 washes in the dishwasher but it was never that bad and I don't smell it any more. It seemed to happen when it got hot and wet so it did smell when cutting hot food, but again,it's gone now and the smell never transferred to the food. I also have yet to experience any of the black coating coming off onto food and I've had it a while now.

We are big fans of these boards, having discovered them in the shops 5+ years ago. Having bought a number via amazon over the years in all different sizes, it seems that you can never have enough, so we have just purchased this one, the same size as one we already have. Note, this is the smallest in the range, and it is very small - get out your ruler and check against the advertised size - but they absolutely work for us when you are chopping small items such as garlic, onions, tomatoes. Much more convenient, and easier to find space for two of these on your kitchen worktops than two of the larger size boards. Recommended.Note - this board is branded epicurean, rather than the Top Gourmet name on our previous purchases, but it appears to be 100% identical in size and shape - I believe the company has undergone a name change.

I purchased these boards from John Lewis, as I had not seen them anywhere else originally. I have had them for 7 years and I have been very please with them. I purchased the black boards and like other reviewers I had noticed black particles appear in the food, but only when I cut onions !!. I contacted the supplier and asked what is happening. They suggested that I sand the board down with a fine sand paper and then this should remedy this. I did sand the board and it seems to have worked.I would recommend this product and I am looking to purchase the natural colour boards. They are a considered purchase but for the fact you can put them in the dishwasher and they are food standard safe isthe assurance I like.
