You often wonder if we're going overboard with all this technology and then you try out a gadget that makes you realise that technology, when it's used correctly can really benefit your life in a very serious way.In the box you get a digital thermostat and the internet connection device, that's it. You plug the internet connector into the mains and a spare ethernet port on your home router. Then you install the thermostat.I was worried at first as there is no paperwork in the box about how to fit the thermostat by replacing your current thermostate but I needn't have worried. The second you begin to register the thermostat device on the TADO website they guide you through everything you need to know. They ask for serial numbers and make sure everything is connectred before you begin installing the thermostat on the wall. I had a very, very old ( mean 15+ years old! ) dial thermostat from British Gas ( UP1 ) and the TADO website asks you all about your current heating kit, you locate your existing device, it then asks you how your current kit is wired and guides you through how to replace your current kit with the TADO device! Aboslutely stunning and an doddle! It took me 5 mins to pull the power, take the old thermostat off the wall, wire in the TADO device and that was it, all done with just 2 screwedrivers as my thermostat is mounted on a wooden staircase so I didn't need to do much.In use it couldn't be simpler. You download the app to your phone, sign in the with the account you used to register your device and you're ready to go. You can set the thermostat to any temperature between 0 and 25C, the device then constantly measures the temperature and humidity around itself every minute and you get an update on your phone roughly every 10-15 mins as the temperature changes. It works exactly like a thermostat should, temp is higher than what you set, it flips off the boiler feed. When the temp is lower than what you want, it switches the boiler back on. I still have my old timer in place so the TADO thermostat works within the timings from the current heating/hot-water timer. At first I expected the temp reading to constantly change every few seconds but it doesn't it was hard to get confirmation that's what it's supposed to do. I thought the device was broken as it took 10-15 mins to detect temp changes but that's simply the way it works. I'm guessing they don't to keep sending stop/start signals to the boiler as that's going to stress the boiler over time and it's not very efficient to keep firing up and stopping the gas and pumps. As I said the max temp you can set the TADO thermostat is 25C, that might no seem much expecially as my old thermostat went up to 30C but to be honest after 2 weeks I've actually found that it's efficient enough for me to keep my thermostat set to around 22-23C max and it works well.On the app ( and website ) you can change the max temp and also get things like open window alerts and some other paid for alerts if you wish. At first you sit there playing with it, it's a novelty to be able to set the thermostat anywhere you like indoors or away from the house but that novelty soon wears off. However it is useful to know that if you have gone out then your family go out and there is not one home but the heating might have come on, you only have to set the temp on your phone's app really low and while you're all out then put it back up an hour so before you know the first person will be home. One cool thing is that you can now see the temp fluctations throughout the day on a little graph the app shows you, extremely useful to know how far the min/max temp is in the house and how quickly the temp rises when it needs to to cool or lower the temp in the house. As 30 year IT veteran I can tell you that the one key to getting the most out of technology is metrics ( statistics ), if you have a set of stats over time you can measure how something is performing and adjust it to make it more efficient. So it is with the TADO kit, you can actually see how your heating system is performing and you can then can begin to appreciate how much that's acatully costing you in real terms. Get the actual figures for how much your gas costs you and you can start to plan to save serious money. The app also gets the weather outside your house, especially the outdoor temp so you can plan when it will be colder and if you pay the subscription the outdoor weather can be used to control your thermostat to adapt as the weather changes outside.Which leads me back to where we came in. This sort of thing might seem like a bit of gimmick but it has very serious applications. It can better organise how your home utilities are run, it can provide real statistics over time to help you make best use of those utilities, that not only saves you real money but also helps you do your bit for the planet by reducing your carbon footprint and on that every little helps.I'm going to run the thermostat for a few months get used to it and then I'm seriously considering replacing my timer for heating/hot-water with the matching TADO timer unit, again to take more efficient control of how the household utilities are being used. Before I finisht this review there is one issue I must raise. Obviously by installing one of these devices you have effectively handed control, by proxy and passively to an external company that is TADO. You have to sign up with them, hand over certain details about where you live and to allow you to control your devices all the "commands" from your phone pass through their systems before they get to your in-house devices. I'm placing trust in TADO that they have all the right security in place to protect my details, I would hate to think what would happen if they were hacked and my details got stolen, my devices hacked and the "bad guys(tm)" on the internet got control of thousands of home heating systems all over the country. Granted the damage would be minimal but if you were away from home and the system was hacked, they could crank up your heating/water 24/7 and cost you a small fortune before you were able to get control back. I'm not trying to panic anyone but internet-of-things and internet connected systems carry security risks, there are always stories in the media about this sort of thing and I'm afraid it's the elephant in the room of home automation that cannot simply be ignored. However, rotate passwords regularly and check the devices and stats and you should be fine, basic device and internet safety procedures.Having said my piece on security of IoT's I feel the benefits far outweigh the risks due to better control and more efficient power savings, the risks are just something to be vigilent about. I'm more than pleased with the device and hope it serves me well for years to come.

We have a Glow-worm Ultracom 38 cxi combi boiler with a Drayton electro-mechanical 2 wire wall thermostat that we wanted to replace with the tado smart thermostat. The thermostat was getting end of life and would often need the contacts cleaned before switching the normally open (NO) 24 VDC heating control from the boiler. The other issue was the lack of intelligent heating control whereby the house was either cool or hot with frequent intervention needed to increase and decrease the thermostat set point. Most new thermostats on the market, smart or otherwise, could improve the control situation but after installing Alexa we wanted to add heating to the list of house devices that we now control. We also thought that having the ability to monitor and control the home environment over the Internet might be useful.Research began on two commonly known products and they both looked fantastic. The problem with the UK models is that there didn’t seem to be a 'wired' switching thermostat model (where the thermostat itself did the switching) available and a wireless receiver had to be installed at the boiler. I thought it pointless to install a wireless receiver and start altering boiler wiring when we already had wires installed to the existing thermostat. Hot water did not need controlling. It was a relief to discover that tado could replace an existing wired thermostat and in our case switch the 24 VDC circuit using the common-NO wiring configuration. The Tado was ordered and arrived quickly. Although being an electrician by trade I followed the Tado instructions that started at the Tado setup web page; I didn’t want to be the one causing a boiler meltdown in the middle of winter by getting things wrong. The start of the install involved creating an account then registering the smart thermostat and the Internet Bridge that plugged into the Ethernet port of the router. Recognition and configuration of tado components was slick without problem. The installation then asks your thermostat and boiler make/model/setup. It was good to see that the Drayton and Glow-worm Ultracom 38 cxi was included in the list. The Ultracom 38 cxi is listed as Ultracom --- cxi as it includes all three (24, 30 and 38) cxi models. The boiler unit was powered off and the instructions gave the wiring diagram which was as expected in my case having metered out the wires beforehand. The wires were labelled using the stickers provided.Mounting of the new thermostat was easy in my case as the existing screw holes from the Drayton matched the tado smart thermostat. The unit could be mounted without any more holes being put in the wall although I did have to chase the cable hole a little. I am not sure if the tado would benefit from a built in level like some of the other models have although this was not an issue as we have a few levels about the house and can resort to the mobile app level if needed.Tado thermostat common and NO were used for the boiler heating switching control with the earth wire being terminated into a spare isolation terminal. After replacing the wiring cover then clipping on the smart thermostat, we were ready to power on the boiler. After manually altering the heating using the manual controls on the smart thermostat and checking the boiler operated in a similar way as the old thermostat, it was time to install the app. We have both android and apple devices in the household and the app installed and worked well on both.We switched off the heating schedule function built into the boiler. There were instructions with the tado but we left the old boiler schedule as is and switched off the boiler 'Central Heating Timed Mode'. This was done by pushing the mode button on the boiler until only the 'Central Heating Function' and 'Domestic Hot Water Function' icons were displayed in the boiler LCD display. The tado app heating schedule gave us what we could not get from the boiler timed mode and that is work week/weekend programming. An individual day programme was also available. We now have frost protection which we never had if the boiler schedule or control had the boiler heating off.The app works well over the Internet when away from home and we have had no issue with performance. For some of the colder days it was good to switch on the heating a bit early before leaving work as the inside temperature had dropped with the heating off. We could change the off time to a minimum threshold to alleviate this maybe in the future. The saving in the heating bill will come from the fact that we seldom overshoot with excessive heating of the house. Having intelligence built into the control, the smart thermostat will alter the heating as the room temperature reaches the set point. The analytics that come with the app show when the boiler was switched on and off over time so you can see your burn rate versus temperature and humidity. One tip if using the schedule is to change the 'Settings' -> 'Heating' 'Manual Control on tado device' from 'Until ended by user' to 'Until next automatic change' otherwise a change in temperature by the user will override the schedule 'next time' until you cancel manually.Alexa was easy to setup and with Alex Show and the Alex Dot in another room inherited the setup. A voice command to check the inside temperature brings up a digital thermostat on the Alex Show screen where the temperature can be altered using the touchscreen interface. Setting heating up/down or to a specific temperature is easy with voice control. We get all of the functionality mentioned and more without spending a penny on subscriptions. We don’t want the features the subscription entitles us to so this is not an issue. The tado smart thermostat gets five stars as it has surpassed my expectations from installation to operation. It also provided the wired thermostat replacement with the flexibility to add a boiler extension kit if the heating control is more complex and/or the water heating is to be controlled. If we want to build on the system to make it multi-room with additional smart thermostats and/or smart radiator thermostats then these options are available.

Of all the smart thermostat systems available, I chose Tado because of their promise that installation could be DIY. This is because I live in an area where it is difficult to find plumbers or electricians. Our radiators are elderly and the thermostats (TRVs) on them jammed eons ago, but I'd been unable to find a plumber interested in the job of replacing either. We have an oil fired boiler with a wireless (but not smart) room thermostat. Our house is old and drafty. In winter the bedrooms are often overheated while the living room is uncomfortably cold, so improving the system had become a priority.I bought this starter kit, 4 extra TRVs,and also the starter kit for the room thermostat (tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat Starter Kit V3+ with Hot Water Control)This kit contains one radiator thermostat and an internet bridge. The bridge is about the size and shape of a pack of Pez candy and it is joined to your network's modem. That bit was easy.So was attaching the thermostat to the radiator. The instructions were very clear and it was a piece of cake to do and took no more than 15 minutes.I now have thermostats on all of our 5 radiators. They can be controlled manually, but also by the app. Using the app it is easy to programme the radiators individually. I am very hopeful that our home is not only going to be more comfortable next winter, but we will save money on fuel too.Tado advise that it is preferable to install this part of their system in conjunction with the room thermostat but I was unable to install the room thermostat (see my review of that item). I am also unsure what benefit there is in doing so which would justify adding a couple of hundred pounds to the cost.A few points to look out for:A. -- MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT PAY TOO MUCH FOR THE KIT. At the moment Amazon are holding frequent 'deals' on parts of the Tado system and the discount is considerable.B. -- Tado give generally clear instructions for removing the old TRVs, but not the information that I needed a very small Allen key to undo the model on our radiators. Fortunately I have an Allen key which fitted.C: The plastic adaptor can be difficult to fit. Patience is needed. I found that it helped if the radiator is on since the warmth softens the plastic a little.D: If you are intending to install the room thermostat, then don't buy this kit because you will just end up with two internet bridges (a mistake I made). I think you should be able to install the room thermostat and the internet bridge, and then install the TRVs without buying this kit.The app has a number of what used to be called bells and whistles, but are now 'skills'. First there is geofencing; the system will detect when everyone has left the house and turn down the radiators. This is complicated by the fact that my OH only rarely turns on his iphone before hes leaves the house, making himself more or less invisible, so I don't see this function as very useful.Secondy it has a weather adaptation, which turns the heating on earlier, the colder it is. I've enjoyed something similar in the past, when I lived in Canada and it certainly makes the start of cold winter mornings more bearable.Thirdly it has 'open window detection'. If it detects an open window, it offers to turn the heating off. I turned off this skill almost immediately, because it is unable to distinguish between an open window and the slight breeze from an air-brick in a blocked chimney. The 'air comfort' feature, which tells you what air quality is like in your area is not so useful for me since I live in a clean air area. It also comments on whether it assesses the rooms in your house as too hot or cold. and thinks I keep my home too cold, but I have the Spartan conditioning of someone who grew up in the 1950s, before Brits discovered central heating.A more useful feature is the ability to adjust the thermostats if they measure too hot or cold than the ambient temperature in the room. In fact, I've found they are only out by one degree.

Additional review:After months of use now, I stick completely with my original 5* review. This product is excellent. The “geofencing” is free or costs costs very little to automate; if free, you get a reminder to switch off your heating after leaving the house. We’ve paid the subscription - and think it’s worthwhile. The product is still entirely worth 5* without the subscription.Original review:Once fitted, and set up with your phone or Alexa, this device is truly wonderful to behold and allows you to set your room temperature and boiler to suit your needs wherever you are (as long as you have a wi-fi or 3/4G internet connection). I have to admit that at one point this morning,I seriously wanted to give one star as the instructions could be clearer and frustration was the name of the game. Tado’s customer service is via their web page rather than a phone, which added to the frustration but – in the end – it proved a saviour. If you decide to fit this yourself, there’s a good guide on Youtube, and one or two other guides. Follow these but note the following, also:1. You will need BOTH the serial number and authorisation codes of the thermostat and the “Internet Bridge”. These are on the actual devices, so before you fit the devices, write these down (or photograph with your phone). The serial number on the box itself is irrelevant and confusing. It is the individual devices you need the numbers for. This caused me a lot of frustration.2. Download the app and follow the setup procedure. You’ll also need to set up a new account on the Tado web page and “set up a new device” using the web page rather than the smart phone. You’ll need your email address, a password of your choice, and, once more, the serial numbers and authorisation codes.3. You will then need to connect the “bridge” to your internet wifi router with the supplied LAN cable. It’s very short, so you’ll also need a very close mains adapter to plug in the bridge to the mains (also supplied).4. Follow the Youtube guide to fit and connect the Tado thermostat , replacing your old one. Be certain that you do not remove the old thermostat’s wiring until you have photographed or drawn a diagram of it, showing where each colour wire goes to which terminal. You will need to know which wire is “switched” and which isn’t. It is easy – there are lonely two wires needed. We had an earth wire in our old thermostat, but the Tado doesn’t need this so it can be put into a blank connector out of the way (but don’t cut it off as who knows, you might need to rewire the old stat!).5. Once fitted, go to the bridge. Is the white light flashing? If not press the “pairing” button on the “bridge” for three seconds until it flashes. It is now in “pairing mode” and waiting for the connection to the thermostat.6. Go to the new Tado wall thermostat and press the bottom right-hand corner for three seconds. This will put it into pairing mode, too – and white lights on the front will show it first searching for the bridge, then connecting with it. Ours took a frustratingly long time and several attempts, but leaving it for 15 minutes seemed to do the trick. Once “paired” the two ovals are shown in white on the thermostat linked and stable.7. Finally, you need to assign a room name to the app on your smart phone. Ours wouldn’t allow this, so yet more frustration. Back to the Tado web page and ask for online help got that sorted. Their online help is very good.8. Finally all done and dusted – well not quite if you use Alexa. You then need to find the Tado “skill” and enable it.9. Then you start to learn how utterly clever and wonderful the Tado Smart Thermostat is.10. Phew.11. If you phone an electrician: make sure they have fitted these before (or similar, such as Hive, Honeywell or Nest). Ask how much it ought to be. It will take them 30 minutes at the outside if you have a “normal” room stat at present. Expect to pay about £50.00+.

I have purposely left this a good 7/8 months before committing to review. I wanted to see just how well it performed during the colder and warmer months, and how stable the host servers are. I now feel in a position to give a fair and honest summary of the Tado system. The initial setup wasn’t without teething trouble. Having got the thermostat starter kit for review, I opted to purchase the extension kit in order to also control the water heating. Tado ask you to supply details of your current heating system, then provide installation instructions to replace with the Tado smart kit. In my particular case, installation was very simple barring a significant step they neglected to include in the instructions to link out some of the old thermostat wiring.Getting through to their customer service was the most difficult part to rectifying the problem as, at the time they offered no out of hours or weekend support. I ended up having to take time off work to get it sorted, which was inconvenient. They did say they were looking to extend their support hours, though I can’t confirm if this has ever been implemented. The ‘fix’ ended up being very simple, and the system was up and running. Next was to set up some schedules using the Tado app. I personally found this not especially difficult, but somewhat long winded. Fortunately it is something you only really need to do once, and the app has not changed / developed in the time I have had the system. So they were the couple of slight negatives. After all the minor installation issues, I can say the system has worked flawlessly - it truly is a set & forget. The only one time it did not operate as it should was when I lost internet connection. Obviously the system can be manually operated via the smart stat, but it did mean the house was a bit chilly as the routine had not operated due to the lost server link. A router reset fortunately restored the connection and the system reconnected with no issue. One of the reasons for picking Tado was the Alexa integration. I have invested quite heavily in home automation with lights and home entertainment all able to be voice controlled. Again this is an area where Tado has been flawless in operation, activation of the Alexa skill was straight forward, it immediately found my Tado accessories and the voice commands worked perfectly. Out of scheduled routines heating or water or both can be turned on or off with simple voice commands along with altering temperatures. It is very impressive just how well it works. To get the true benefits of this smart technology Tado offers auto-assist, offering automated skills like the geofencing, so the heating automatically turns off when the last person leaves, or Pre heats when you are close to home. Other skills include open window detection, humidity monitoring & weather adaptation - all these designed to save energy and reduce bills. The auto-assist however does come at an additional monthly subscription of £2.99 / mnth accounting for the majority of the poor reviews. It is not mandatory to the Tado system, but to get the best from it along with the potential savings a smart thermostat can bring, it is something to be aware of. I personally think it’s a reasonable price, many disagree - If it saves me on my bills I am happy! To further enhance my system, I intend to look at installing a couple of smart radiator stats, as smaller rooms in the house can get too warm. This kind of zonal heating, I believe is something currently unique to Tado - although I could be wrong.I feel the system is brilliant, I have no complaints over its operation or stability & other professional reviews like T3 & Stuff magazine would appear to agree. If you want a very flexible smart thermostat, I feel Tado is a perfect system.

First the elephant in the room, yes a number of the features you would expect to see - most importantly geofencing - are now a subscription service. You *CAN* buy V3+ and pay ~£2.99 each month you want it, e.g. 4-5 months over autumn / winter. I ended up buying a V3 bridge elsewhere, paying the £20 one off upgrade, if you can find one, I would recommend others do the same.I brought Tado when I moved to a larger house after having used Nest for 2 years. I personally was not impressed by Nest's "learning" - others' mileage may vary - and I wanted to be able to turn off radiators in spare infrequently used rooms.INSTALLATIONI'm a semi-competent DIY'er, I managed to install the Nest without requiring support.Setting up the internet bridge and radiator thermostats was mostly straight forward (if you already have TRV on your radiators). I had to revisit a couple of my radiators to tweak them but this was because of issues with the radiators themselves - one valve had a build up in it that a hammer dealt with and the other I had misjudged which adapter to use. Some of our radiators do not have TRV so these need to be replaced beforehand. The side effect is that these radiators are on whenever ANY radiator in my house requests heat from the boiler - unless I turn them off manually. The extension kit - used to control the boiler required more effort. The good side is Tado provided comprehensive instructions for my specific boiler - though it did take a couple days after creating a mandatory support ticket to get the instructions and start doing the install. There was also an issue with my installation (which was done correctly from my end) which meant the boiler was stuck permanently on. It took about a week with a support ticket for the issue to be resolved - the changes were made on Tado's end. It seems like some of the configuration - including basics like moving certain devices between rooms - are not possible to do yourself and require a support ticket. This is not a major issue since radiators don't tend to change location often, but is a mild inconvenience when installing and testing.FEATURESAs stated, I brought an old version and paid the one off upgrade to get automatic geofencing and open window detection. Geofencing works as expected, my one gripe is there is no way to manually change between home and away modes - e.g. if you have a guest staying over but don't want to add them to your Tado home. My reports from Tado tell me its doing stuff when it detects an open window, however I know it does not react when my wife opens our bedroom window during the night. When it comes to schedules it is fairly flexible, however there is no way to copy common schedules across rooms or days. This means with my 10 radiators it was very laborious to set up.COST / SAVINGSYour mileage will vary, but our gas usage cut by around 30% after I had everything working - we use gas for heating water too so that means our heating savings are greater than that - but I am rather draconian with my schedule. That said, it is not a cheap solution when kitting your whole house - and I would make it all or nothing. I haven't worked it out, but it will take quite some time for me to "break-even" assuming that were my reason for buying it. Tado is often on sale so I would wait until it is. Radiator valves can be found for as little £37.50 each - down from non-sale of £70.

This is a review of the tado° Smart Thermostat Starter Kit V3+ and not the other iterations of the tado kit also featured on the Amazon page. In essence V3+ differs from other models in that there is some additional functionality regarding air quality with some software enhancements. The tado system is different from many smart thermostats in that it can, relatively easily, be installed without an electrician or heating engineer. In this regard it's similar to Netatmo's smart thermostat. The downside of this is that the thermostat will only control your heating and not the hot water. To control hot water with the tado kit you need to buy an additional module and start messing around with yourboiler cabling - something that needs an electrician. The thermostat replaces an existing wired thermostat and uses the existing wiring to do this. The thermostat is then used to turn the heating on and off as well as control the temperature. If you have a timer in addition to a thermostat, or indeed any other controls for the heating, these should be set to 24 hours or continually on. In effect when you tell tado that you don't want the heating on it internally sets a low temperature so the thermostat tells the hearting that it is not required.Fitting is pretty straightforward. You'll need to download the app to a smartphone, replace the existing thermostat with the tado module. You also need to connect the bridge - which uploads your heating data to the tado servers which control your heating - to your router. Unlike the Netatmo system this has to be a wired connection rather than wireless so you'll need to position it close by.As with other systems the software takes account of outside temperatures to help set the optimum temperature in your house. It will save money but the big savings quoted assume that you have a central heating system without a thermostat - so the heating is either on or off. In practice few people have such an antiquated system - and you need a wired thermostat for the system to work so savings based on not having one seem a bit crazy. You will be able to turn the heating on or off remotely and fine tune the on and off times so, for example, the house is up to temperature when you return home. To do the really smart stuff, such as controlling temperatures in individual rooms, and controlling the hot water, you'll need to buy the tado smart radiator valves for the former and the hot water kit for the latter. The former can be installed without a heating engineer assuming that you already have thermostatically controlled radiator valves. If you don't you'll need a plumber. The costs of the smart valves and new valve hardware will be expensive though.Tado have some additional smart features - using geolocation to automatically turn the heating off when you, and your mobile phone, are away from your house, window open detection and more. Concerningly though to access these features you need to pay a monthly subscription fee that will eat in to any energy savings. This is irritating but a common business model for smart home technology, especially cameras and security systems.Overall the tado system is reasonable. The technology is not new and it doesn't really offer much compared to other systems such as Netatmo's but there's no particular weaknesses with the system. Four stars.

This kit is great and well worth getting - at least now it is .... now it's doing what I want it to do. I don't even mind paying the £25/yr (as at April 2021) for the extra stuff - in fact, I think it's worth doing (personal choice). However, the installation wasn't a painless experience. It took me a couple of days of messing about and eventually chatting with tado Support to get this sorted. The actual physical install is very straightforward and the instructions through the mobile app are brilliant. However, the logical setup of the devices, and how they need to talk to each other to control things, is not so easy (at least in my experience... and I'm pretty tech savvy). If, like me,you currently have Wired thermostats and a single control unit to manage you Central Heating and Hot Water then you may fall foul of the same issues I did.I have 2 central heating zones in my house (1 for the Lounge and 1 for the rest of the house). For the heating to come on, both the controller AND the wired thermostat for that zone need to be activated (this is important to consciously remember when choosing/purchasing/setting up the tado system). What I bought: 1 Smart Thermostats (Wired), Smart Thermostat Starter Kit V3+ with Hot Water Control (included the Extension Kit) and several Smart Radiator Thermostats (TRV's). This gave me 2 Smart Thermostats to replace the existing wired ones, the Hot Water control and lots of Radiator valves to individually control radiators/rooms.What I wanted was to be able to replace the existing system with the Smart system, connecting the TRV's to the main Smart Thermostat that controlled the majority of the house. That way, if one room gets too cold, it triggers the heating to come on. Added bonus was a remote control for the Hot Water.Things didn't work out as the TRV's were calling for the heating but it wasn't activating.Issues I'm now aware of and discovered during installation:--> My old control unit controlled both Central Heating and Hot Water, so the Extension Kit needed to do the same - makes sense but this is where the problem started for me.--> The Extension Kit is a Zone Controller but a Smart Thermostat can be a Zone Controller as well - although I had to get tado Support to configure this for me.--> TRV's can only talk to (connect to) 1 Zone Controller device. This is an issue in my setup because, as I mentioned above, the (Wired) Smart Thermostat and the CH controller (the Extension Kit) would both need to be signalled that the CH needed to come on. So turned out I can't use this setup (anyone want to buy a hardly used Extension Kit?).Spent a lot of time talking with tado Support via Web Chat and they were extremely helpful. Eventually got to where I needed to .....Fix --> tado Support configured the Smart Thermostat's to be Zone Controllers (something I couldn't do from the point I was at with the installation). I then removed the Extension Kit from the setup, set the CH to be on constant (then it's controlled by the thermostats), and use the old "dumb" unit to run the Hot Water cycle. Thinking about it, I won't really miss the remote HW control.... never really changed it anyway apart from the odd boost, now and again.Long story short ... it was a little bit painful to get installed but it's working great now.

Pros:- The software UI is very concise- tado community forum and their tech support response are helpful- Easy to follow step-by-step installation- The noise it produced is much shorter than its competitors (I reckon it's 10 times shorter at least comparing to EvoHome)- The look-and-feel of the valve is by far much better than its competitorsCons:- Smart schedule does not work offline (more explanation below)- Not the quietest valves in terms of dBa, but it's the shortest- Valve cannot sometimes disconnects from the bridge if there are 2 brick walls in between- Maximum temperature is limited to 25C (more details below)- The cables came with the starter kit are too short for practical installation, particularly the USB-C power cable.- Not idiot-proof in the DIY installation - you need to be ready to google for help.A bit more explanationThe tado bridge and the valve are well made but time will tell if the matt coating would become sticky and unusable. Although the bridge and its devices are communicating on 866Hz, it is not any better than a cheap 2.4GHz router, which connections might drop if you have 2 load-bearing brick walls in between. It is however, not too difficult to re-connect it - just turn the valve to make it emits signal to the bridge and it will reconnect again. One of the annoyances about tado valves is that it is limited to 25C, but they probably forgot the valves are measuring the temperature next to the radiator! Fortunately, tado's developer allows you to set a offset temperature per room - but this will take a few hours to fine tune and make the temperature measure accurate. I did this tuning by using a thermometer poisoned 1-2 meters away from the radiator, depending on the room size. For small rooms, the offset is -1C to -2C, and for large rooms (> 12 sqm), the offset can be as high as -5C to -6C.The reason that I rated tado as 4-star instead of 5 is because the smart schedule DOES NOT WORK OFFLINE. This is a major weakness compare to its competitors. While tado tech support would tell you the valve can still be adjusted manually, would you be happy to go around the house to adjust them one by one when your internet is down (e.g. when the ISP is pushing a patch to your router) ? As a homeowner, would you be risk to buy something that might be unusable in the future when tado got into administration ? When did you hear a boiler system became unusable because its manufacturer has gone bankrupt ? Tado system will probably the first if they do in the future. In my opinion, it would be vital for them to offer a panel to control the devices offline, just like Evohome, in order to survive in the competition. Having said that, tado does have the financial backing by big companies like Amazon, so hopefully, they will never go into administration. If you ever manage to read till here, you would realise this is more of a review of the tado system as a whole. This is intentional, because I believe most people buying a starter kit would be evaluating the tado system. They might end up in returning it if they feel tado is not fit for their purpose, or they might end up in buying more valves and may be thermostats if they are happy with the starter kit. I hope this review is useful for you to make an informed decision in purchasing tado.

I had high hopes for this system. The smart wall thermostat install went OK, no problem linking. First smart radiator valve on a Drayton valve, OK. A bit fiddly, not easy to feel the click to let you know it's locked but got there. the next one was a Danfoss, a very common valve and adaptor included. The adaptor is rubbish, it doesn't grip the nut well enough. What's worse, the manufacturers know it's rubbish:"This form allows you to order a new Danfoss RA adapter free of charge if you are having an issue with the stock adapter due to a minor manufacturing issue. This typically results in the Smart Radiator Thermostat not sitting securely on the valve, even when the screw on the Danfoss RA adapter is not overtightened"So now I have to wait 14 days, they're sent from Germany surface mail. They know they're selling a duff product and yet they make minimal effort to sort it out.I've played with the schedule settings via browser. The Tado interface does not work well with a 4K laptop screen, the up-down arrows are too tiny to click on.It's all a bit naff. As I've mounted and got the wall thermostat working plus one radiator, I'll persevere, but I'm not optimistic.Update. I checked the Tado help again and it may well be more than two weeks for the supposedly improved Danfross adaptors to arrive. So, I went down to Screwfix and bought three Drayton complete TRVs at a cost of over £30. This made the job much bigger, draining the heating system, removing old valves, and radiator tail for one. Refitted new valves and from that point on the installation was very easy. The initial setup needed a laptop but once the Router Bridge was installed I could use phone to read in the barcodes rather than type long case sensitive strings in.I was pleased to find in the case of the living room where the wall thermostat is fitted, the system automatically just uses the radiator Smart Thermostat as an on-off device with the wall thermostat giving very accurate temperature control. I'm so impressed I might buy another Smart Wall thermostat for the main bedroom. I've already spent more £400 though...I've yet to set up the away from home automatic switch off and Alexa control but it now looks to be a very well thought out system. There is total flexibility on individual room control, unlimited time slots for unlimited temperature setting. In conclusion, this is a five-star system marred by a very weak solution to a major (not minor) manufacturing/ design defect (which cost me an extra £30 and 4 hours of work). I've upgraded my review of 2 stars to 4. I strongly recommend Tado if you have Drayton valves. Otherwise expect delays, more expense, or even a plumber if you can't do valve replacement stuff yourself. Two years later:It’s been a very reliable system. Six valves, and a room stat in continuous operation with no failures. Occasionally, very rarely, a valve is reported as not connected. Apart from the one occasion due to flat batteries, this has always been the Tado remote server. Thankfully, a rare occurrence. If you see a ‘not connected” message, ignore it for six hours, it will go away on it’s own. Still not quite five stars but getting close.

--Been using Tado for 15 months now, no improvements or updates in terms of functionality since purchased--Background: Moved from a 1970's Back Boiler/Water Tank & single-pane radiators with no TRV's to a modern Combi boiler, dual-pane radiators, with full Tado system. This thermostat is very intimidating to non-tech people, not because of the physical install but because you have to configure it on the unit itself. Full details can be found buried in Tado's site as you need to tell the thermostat if it is a relay or temperature sensor, if it will control hot water, and if any Tado Extension Kits are present.Pros:• Let's you control temperature in 0.1 degree intervals.• Smaller than expected &looks very modern.• Updates the temperature of the location & updates the app every 10-15 seconds.• Comes with Duracell OEM batteries pre-installed.• Can be configured before wiring takes place, as the wiring is only used for boiler communication everything else runs off the batteries.Cons:• Took 30-45 minutes to ensure all working (As modern boilers don't let you on/off constantly)• Picks up dirt/marks stupidly quick - Ours had black marks within minutes from the contractor and they will not scrub off.• Not elderly friendly. To change the temperature at the thermostat itself you have to press the button, wait for it to prompt for target temperature, then press the up & down arrows until you reach the temperature you want.• Alexa control is not as intuitive as you'd expect out of the box. (In my example X = Living Room)--Saying "Alexa, Increase the Temperature in X" does not work, you have to specify how many degrees you want to go up or down.--Tado creates 2 scenes in Alexa per TRV, these are all called "Boost X" or "Manual Mode X" - You'd expect these to be "Alexa, Boost X" to give a temperature boost in X location, instead the command is "Alexa, turn on boost X" and you get a 1 degree increase. "Alxea, turn off boost X" resets the TRV to it's target temperature.--Saying "Alexa, Turn the heating on" is a grey area. If all the TRV's & the Thermostat are reading temperatures above their target, Alexa will NOT turn the heating on. Instead you have to say "Alexa, increase the thermostat" to increase the target temperature until it turns on.• The 'Savings' this makes are nowhere near as big as they advertise, with a 2019 combi boiler I only save 1-2% monthly, the MOST I have saved is 22% but that was when the boiler was turned off the entire month!• There is no 'off' feature still, the heating will always kick on if if feels it is needed unless you manually set the target to 0c or put Tado is away-mode.Notes:• The subscription of £24 p/year is NOT required unless you want Tado to:1. Automatically turn off TRV's when a window is open or air flow is detected (Without subscription, you get a notification on your phone. Responding to the notification turns the TRV off)2. Turn off the heating when nobody is home. (Without subscription, you get a notification on your phone. Responding to the notification turns the heating off)3. The App states that "Weather Adaptation" is always active.

So firstly this would have certainly been a 5 star review had the supplied adapters not worked better for my specific radiator valves; Danfoss RA connection. I purchased 7 of these for my home set-up to allow me to zone specific rooms. The valves themselves looks excellent and are certainly the best looking smart TRV valves I have come across to date after an extensive review of others. The TRV valves come with a large selection of adapters. For my specific set-up I required the Danfoss RA adapters. I had problems with these on my radiator and found that they were loose and I had instances when the valve itself would pop off the radiator at random when the TRV was attempting to push the pin back in,with the force exerted on the adapter enough to pop it out of the plastic thread. The thread on the plastic adapter doesn't seem to grip the mating part very well and the interference fit is not snug enough. Once the valve pops off one time then there is little chance it will maintain a good fit on the thread thereafter as the plastic is likely to have stripped to some extent. After speaking to Tado they informed me to not tighten the adapter onto the radiator. This partially worked but I found myself having to wedge in a piece of paper to allow the adapter to grip onto the valve. Not a great solution.Tado customer services were excellent and sent me new Danfoss RA adapters and also advised I could purchase metal adapters separately which I ultimately did.I purchased these metal adapters and what a difference it makes. No longer are my TRV valves wobbly and I now don't live in fear of the valve popping off! This is only my experience and I will certainly be buying more TRV valves again, only this time I will purchase the metal adapters separately for any Danfoss RA adapters. It's a shame the Danfoss RA supplied plastic adapters just don't feel fit for purpose. But overall, after my installation issues, the system itself is fantastic. We now have a truly zoned heating system and love the look of the valves. We extensively reviewed other smart TRV's and came to the conclusion these were the clear winner. Honeywell have their system but the rich interface and software element combined with the sleek and modern look of the Tado valves certainly came out trumps for our home.I've seen other reviews with someone having similar issues with Danfoss RA connections so this doesn't seem to be an isolated event. But again, apart from the small adapter they are fantastic and work flawlessly and are extremely silent (we would never wake up with them turning the rad on/off and the sound lasts only a second or so). This would have been 5 stars if the adapter was metal but the separate purchase was cheap. We have other radiators that don't require any adapters and the TRV fits on it direct flawlessly.Photos attached showing supplied plastic adapter and then the metal ones purchased separately.

Having read some of the negative reviews I was a little worried about lashing out more £££ on these in addition to the Tado thermostat and extension kit I've already got... However I took the plunge and have fitted 5 to various rads in the house.Installation was easy, luckily they fit straight onto my old TRV bases, without having to use any of the supplied adaptors. Like others I'm not impressed with the design of the adaptors - they are a split design with a bolt to clamp them on, but when you tighten that bolt it will compress the female thread on the adaptor's inside, but at the same time this will make the male thread on the outside shrink - so it'll never fit properlySet-up was ok,most of the valves found the extension kit's RF signal first time. I had one that refused to connect - on the 3rd attempt it did work.In use, the app seems ok, but I'm not sure how you group valves together - this needs a bit more explaining on Tado's help pages. It can be a bit tedious setting up each one, as I haven't found a way to just "copy" an existing schedule from one radiator valve to the next - you have to enter it all in manuallySo far, the house seems comfortable, the valves do make a bit of a whirring noise - unfortunately this is amplified by the rigid radiator & pipework, probably not much Tado can do about this apart from using a quieter motor (not easy for a product that's already designed and in mass production). I find the noise wakes me up sometimes, it's brief but can be a bit annoying. I guess I'll get used to it after a whileIn the end, I had to move my Tado internet bridge to a more central location in the house, as I was having problems with the devices losing their connections. Moving it to the first landing on the stairs seems to have fixed that, luckily I have several ethernet-over-mains adaptors so moving it was easyThe geofencing part I don't know about, since there's always someone at home I've switched this feature off. I'm sure it could save money, but not in my situation. It's disappointing Tado are trying to move to a subscription model - that hardware is already expensive and this will put people off what is a good system. One last point, if your internet goes down, your heating schedule stops too - you can adjust stuff manually, but really how hard would it be to keep the schedule locally (maybe in the Tado internet bridge/hub thing)? This is a big potential flaw in the system - a bit like having a computer that will only work if it can connect to Microsoft or Apple's servers all the time.Come on Tado, listen to your customers, see the light and add this (maybe to the next generation of the internet bridge/hub). You have a good system here, but are in danger of scaring away potential customers or letting competitors come in and take away your market share

Like many Eon customers I had my Eon touch system replaced by Eon withthe Tado system. The basic system of Internet bridge, smart thermostat and extension kit worked extremely well and was simple to get used to. I also then decided to replace my Drayton Trv4s and to invest in the smart radiator thermostats.I have a 4 bedroom bungalow with 2 ensuites and a family bathroom. In total there are 8 radiators and 3 towel rails that I wished to control individually. 7 of the radiators were fitted with Drayton TRV4s and replacing these with Tado's was very easy. It's just a matter of unscrewing the Drayton head and fitting the Tado's. I Didn't need to use any adaptors and the app gives very clear instructions.Managed to fit all 7 in under an hour. The app lets you pair 2 or more radiators so if you alter the temperature on 1 radiator it automatically adjusts both. Very handy. It soon became apparent that I had a problem with three of my Valves. Not the Tado thermostat part but the actual valves themselves were sticking. WD 40 didn't seem to improve things. It's not surprising that the valves were sticking either open or shut as they hand to been moved in years.Having to replace three valves I took the plunge and decided to fit valves on my three towel rails and the one radiator without a TRV. Most homes have one radiator usually in the hall that has no valve. This has been recommended in the past so that should the boiler be on and pumping water and all the radiator valves are shut the water has somewhere to go. You can leave this radiator alone but what this means in practice is that this radiator will always heat up whenever ANY radiator calls for heat. That clearly is a waste.I've now got all radiators and towel rails fitted with Tado smart radiator valves.I have set up different temperatures and timers for each room. We used our old wireless thermostat to check temperatures and noticed that the theremostats on the radiators were always reading higher than the actual room temperature meaning the room was colder than the app was saying. This is easily corrected by going into the settings on the app and adjusting the temperature offset. This isn't surprising as the Tado stats are obviously on the radiator where it's going to be warmer. The geofencing option works very well. My wife and I both have the Tado app installed on our phones so when we are both out the heating turns itself off or down automatically. And when one of us is home it switches back on.I have also managed to set up the Tado's on Apple home which means I can now ask Siri to adjust all the radiators. I believe you can also integrate with Alexa and similar products. The kit isn't cheap but I think within 18 months I will have saved enough on my energy costs to recoup the outlay.
