Arrived safely and the outside packaging was good, but the inside box looked as if it had been knocked about so I was a bit concerned about damage, but all seemed to be intact and not marked in any way. This was a replacement for a dial mechanical type that needed three wires, live (red), neutral (black) and switched live (yellow). This I didn't know until I started the switch over and was a little concerned about the fact that the new one only require 2 wires, live and switched. So what was the purpose of the neutral wire ? The installation manual for the new one only mentioned that it didn't need an earth, but provided a parking connector in case an earth was present (which wasn't, by the way). There was provision for a neutral connector in the plastic molding (marked "N"), but the cavity was empty (no metal connector). I did some research and determined that the old thermostat needed the neutral wire, in conjunction with the live wire, to provide power for it's operation, something the new one doesn't require because it is powered by batteries, which, allegedly, will last for about a year. I suppose that is why it's called a Volt-Free thermostat, although I think it's a bad name, because the batteries supply the voltage. The existing screw holes were perfect for the new back-plate, even though the connectors were not identical, so I couldn't use the old back-plate for this job (designers - make a note for future designs). So I cut the exposed copper off the neutral wire (with the house power off, of course), bent the end over and covered it with two layers of insulation tape and tucked the end into the cavity marked "N" and flattened the rest of it against the wall to make it neat. I decided not to disconnect it at the boiler nor cut it off completely in case a future device needs it or I want to re-fit the old thermostat. The other wires were easy to connect, then after checking all safe, slipped on the new thermostat, with fresh batteries already in place, tightened the bottom fixing screws and turned the house power back on.Having also viewed a few videos about programming the device, I had no trouble entering my own settings. It's a bit like setting an alarm clock but with many alarms, so you need to keep your wits about you. 24 hours later, now and all's well, the house seems warmer (!) and it's fun to keep a check on the device, but the novelty will wear off I suppose.I have some suggestions - (1) Provide a parking connector for the neutral wire if present (I thought it was bad practice to use the earth parking spot for this, so I didn't) and deal with it in the manual - (2) the anti-frost setting is fixed at 5 degrees, but if I am away for some time, I would like to be able to change that, because I like to keep the house warmer than 5 degrees at all times, to avoid damp and shrinkage of the structure and changing all the settings is not convenient - (3) also, I don't need the display on all the time, that's a waste of battery power, so I think it should have an auto display off feature or a manual display on/off option, possibly combined with the frost/back-light button - (3) and finally, there is a temporary temperature over-ride feature, but it can't be made permanent, which is a bit inconvenient without wading through all the settings to get to the one I want to change, so let's have an easy way of adjusting temperature settings please. Overall, very happy.

This is an electronic thermostat it provides more accurate control than a mechanical switching thermostat. It is battery operated so can be used where only 2 wires are available.I replaced my existing room thermostet with this but as I already had a time programmer I set the heating to permanant ON and left the hot water controlled. It displays the actual room temperature, day of the week, time, programme number in operation and a flame indicator to show boiler running. It has 5 timed temperature settings that can be set for 5+2 days or 7 individual days. It comes with a factory set default programme. These 5 time/temperature settings are consecutive so there is no off.For each time setting you set the temperature required until the next timed setting. At the next programmed time setting the temperature will be changed to its setting and so on.This effectively is timed setback or set-up so you are able to set minimum or maximum temperatures for any part of 24 hours you wish. This tends to be more fuel cost effective than turning the heating off during the unoccupied day or at night by enabling a minimum low temperature. It is generally more fuel efficient to keep a lowish temperature than to lose all the heat by switching off.You can for instance set different setpoint temperatures - low for when you are in bed, higher when you get up, low again while you are at work, higher for when you get home and then perhaps a little higher later when you are relaxing. There are setting options available for frost protection and for sleep mode (all functions Paused off). There is also a low battery indicator.I find since replacing my standard room thermostat with this the temperature in my home is far more constant, it has far less highs & lows. The only niggles I have is that it is sensing and displaying a temperature slightly higher than the actual temperature and I have had to up the temperature settings accordingly. If you want only temperature control see the RT300.There are mains powered versions available if you have 3 wire (L N SL) not including earth.I would avoid the radio (wireless) versions there far too prone to interference from other wireless items such as cordless phones and the like..

Firstly, outstanding delivery!Ordered at 11pm, and it arrived thirteen and a half hours later.I put the kettle on, programmed and installed the thermostat before the kettle even boiled.Total time between deciding I really should change the clunky old thermostat and sitting back having a cuppa after actually changing it fourteen hours. The thermostat itself seems fairly well made and was easy to program once you get your head round the fact there are no off times, just temperature change times. This is actually better allowing you to set a minimum temperature during unoccupied times. The unit is pre programmed and only required small changes to suit my needs.Installation could not have been much easier.I was even able to use the fixing holes for the old thermostat. It even came with batteries. The display is easy to read and the override function is simple, just step the temp up to what you want and it will use that setting until the next time change. Previous stat was often left at too high a setting for days until I noticed and put it back.I expect this stat will recover its cost with that function alone. It is even quiter than the old stat.So far I am very happy with the service, the installation and operation of this stat, and should really have fitted one years ago.I could easily have spent a lot more on a stat, but doubt it would have been worth doing so.Its well priced and does the job well.UPDATE 29/03/216 still working and on the original battery.

We bought this as the timer built in to our boiler is broken (also hard to access) and our current thermostat (in our case we had an Honeywell old dial thermostat) didn't offer the option to automatically turn on/off the heatingFirst - the amazon picture makes it look way more dated that it actually is, its actually not too bad looking - not the most stylish piece of skin but plain and simple. Picture attachedInstallation was very straightforward as this fits onto the same backplate as is the industry standard. The equivalent wired Honeywell product for a 7 day programmable timer and thermostat was nearly £90!So this is notably cheaper but seems to do the same job.It has a live and a switched live port for you to put the two wires in from the old installation (usually brown for live and blue for switched live (not neutral) and a parking terminal for the spare earth (if you have one). It gets its power from 2x AA batteries so you don't need a true "neutral" to power the device directly which makes it compatible with all previous wiring setups.Setup was easy and took less than a couple of minutes and seems to work well. Boiler comes on and off as expected as per the temperature settings (note: leave your actual boiler set to "on" permanently) and let this thermostat and controller unit do the work. Obviously the long term remains to be seen but so far so good! Delivery was quick and packaging sufficient for adequate protection from damage

I don't understand the people who can't program it, if you've ever done a normal CH/HW timer or a VCR it's no different. Press SET, choose weekday or weekend with the arrows the press SELECT. Choose a start time for the 1st temperature with the arrows and press SELECT, then choose the 1st temperature with the arrows, press SELECT. Repeat for set points 2-5 then repeat for the 5 weekend setpoints. Even if you didn't have the instructions (which I found fine BTW) you would figure it out in a minute or two.Wiring it up was easy, it didn't quite fit the previous back plate so I had to swap it over to the one that was supplied with it. This doesn't use a neutral wire, only live and switched live,so I had to screw the neutral wire into an unused terminal. There is a switch on the back to change between 5/2 or 7 day programming, useful if you want to program each day individually. It does make the usual loud relay "click" when turning the heating on and off, so if you plan on running it overnight near to where you sleep or have it in a room where you spend a lot of time then you might consider something quieter.I've only given it 4 stars because of the loud click noise and there is no option to override it (eg if you want to set it to 15 degrees continuously if you're away for a couple of days). You can override the current set temperature using the arrows, but when it gets to the next programmed time/temperature it will revert back to that.

I had to change my Thermostat from a Honeywell recently (as the Honeywell had succumbed to the disappearing display syndrome common to Honeywells) and am happy with the Salus RT500. The Salus RT500 is a pretty basic but effective programmable thermostat. One gets 5 temperature settings through-out the day (with the possibility to temporarily override the setting if you wish) which is really all I ever found myself using in the past. There are no "holiday" or boost or automatic-frost-protection modes (there is frost protection set at 5 degrees celsius but it must be specifically selected -but again I have never needed to use this function in the past as I never would let the house drop below 15 degrees). There is only one omission which I do miss from the Honeywell functionality and that is the ability to suspend all the programming and just set the temperature to a set minimum- that is occasionally useful -say if going on holidays just set the temp to 15 and walk away. Update: ( I have now successfully used the frost button as the holiday walk away mode, and came back to a cold-ish house but just pressed the frost button to re-instate the normal programming which was fine for me. If your house is a cold house then this might not be ideal, but for me it worked fine). Nevertheless if the unit lasts as long as it appears to last others here then I shall be happy even with the basic set of functionality.

Easy to install and set up. I bought mine to better control the temperature throughout the day and night ie making it cooler through the night and starting to warm the house in the morning before getting up. We still have a controller at the boiler so there is some time where the system isn’t on at all but you could use this with the boiler on permanently by setting the temps you want at the times you want them. As an example ours is set at 16.5 degrees throughout the night then starts ramps up to 20 degrees half an hour before we get up. Our boiler then switches off but you could equally just set it low during the day.If you need a bit more heat it is simple to just up the temp a bit.One tip is to set it 0.5 lower than you want because it over runs by 0.5 of a degree before it switches off.As for installation my understanding, after a little research, is that as it has battery power you don’t need a neutral connection (insulate the end of the neutral wire and leave unconnected). All in all really pleased with it as it saves me getting out of bed before everyone else to turn the heating up and having to remember to turn it down at bedtime!

Great product and excellent value for money, i used it to replace a basic thermostat on a warm air system where the clock on the boiler was running slow and would have cost around £200 to fix so fitting this for £25 was much better value.Although it doesn't say so as its a zero volt contact based thermostat it will also work for 24v systems without issue which is what my warm air system uses. You cannot use it to replace resistance based thermostats which some warm air systems apparently use so check what your thermostat model is first, if its a 24v or 240v basic switch this will do the job!Easy to install, only 2 wires to screw in and 2 screws to mount it.I had to drill a couple more holes in the wall as my existing holes didn't match up but your mileage may vary. Note that you screw the back plate on and then the wires to the back plate meaning its very easy as you don't need to screw them into the thermostat itself like you would a light switch for example.Don't forget to isolate the power to your boiler first, the wires are live and may be carrying full mains power!, if your unsure get a trained electrician to fit this unit!

I bought this to replce my old honeywell analog thermostat as it was located in the hallway..for years I had trouble controlling the temp in the lounge because the hallway is a lot colder.....my old thermostat wiring consisted of 1. a timer live (red) which only becomes live when the heating is on at the central heating controller, 2. a switched live (yellow) which feeds the timer live back to the central heating controller when the thermostat is active and 3. a neutral (blue)....the timer live is connected to the COM contact on the salus and the switched live is connected to the NO contact...I ran a new permanent live and neutal as this is needed to power the salus receiver and left the oldneutral disconnected...once this was done the new salus thermostat worked straight away without any problems....I now have the thermostat in the lounge where its needed instead of in the hallway where its always cold...I think this will save me a fortune as the boiler was almost permanently on due to the cold hallwayRead full review...

Bought this as a temporary replacement for a broken Danfoss room stat and given what it can do it also replaced a Honeywell time controller. You get an all in one solution for temperature and time on/off switching of your heating, great if you have a combi, but not if you have a stored hot water system. Now this is a CHEAP control by any means, yet I can find no fault with it's build quality or operation. Easy to set and with a good quality back-lit LCD it's fairly nice to look at. Operation is pretty easy, the only 'missing' feature I'd say is the advance to next programme button found on other controls. This means that if you come home say before the control is set to turn on the heating, instead of just pressing a single 'advance' button to jump to the start of the next programme, you have to change the set temperature which forces the heating on. It will then 'revert' once the next programme starts, so no big deal, it's just a bit less slick. A very minor quibble on an otherwise excellent and very good value control.

Bought it on 2017 autumn, so had been using for two years (two winter heating seasons) already. I'ts of course not possible to compare it, because of different weather each year, but investing ~25€, I certainly have got it back fast on less expenses for gas heating. I have set it on 22'C on weekends, on work days in the morning/evening is 22'C, but at night it's 19'C. On workday it keeps 15'C and start heating up an hour before we come home.Of course it's not so programmable as the newer smart ones or internet connected, but for the price it's still more better than just analog one, which was mainly just standing at 22'C, as we all the time forgot to turn it down to 19'C at night and when going to work.Have been looking maybe to get smart one,but the big price tag (at least 4-5x) and a lot of comments that they're are disconnecting, not working as expected etc., I'm very happy with this - it just work as programmed :) even have not changed the battery for two years already :)

Had this a while now and I have to say I don't understand some of the adverse reviews from some others.I wanted this thermostat to replace a standard honeywell room stat so that I could have heating at different temperatures throughout the day and night.I am no genius, but I found it easy to install and as for setting it up, as some others had said that it was difficult to programme, I decided that as it is battery powered, I would sit on my setee in comfort to programme it up.I wanted to set it up as 1 set of times for weekdays and different setting for the weekend, to my surprise I was done in about 15 minutes, put it back on it's back plate and away it went.Overriding set temperature is simple and quick, and it resets to your programmed settings at the next programme time change. As long as it continues to perform as well as it has so far, I would recommend this as it is considerably cheaper than a honeywell equivalent.

Really pleased with this unit. I bought it to replace an old Honeywell two wire unit (live and switched live). It was easy to install, even the mounting holes were in the same place as the Honeywell. It is easy to programme the 5 time zones for weekdays and the 5 for the 2 weekend days. Since installing the house is much warmer but the boiler is much more responsive. I set the time zones 1 to come on at 5:30 at 19 degrees, then at 8 it drops back to 16, then up to 18 at 4:00, then 20 at 6 before dropping back to 16 at 10 at night. Its also extremely easy to over ride, but resets itself at the next time zone so no worries if you forget to put it back. The only small niggle I have is when programming it,it is too easy to press the wrong button and you end up having to start again. But this is a small price to pay for such a good little money saving device that brings more comfort to the home.

With the cold weather in we needed a multi-time programmable timer for our new home to replace the simple analogue thermostat installed at the moment.I bought this as I work shifts and need something which is easy to program and adjust to my shift patterns. The 5/2 feature where you set one set of times for Mon-Fri and a second set for Sat/Sun makes life VERY easy. No changing each day separately. You set 5 times and each day uses those settings. So when I swap shifts I can alter 2 times and suddenly the week is programmed! Joy!!!The unit itself is tidy, functional and looks decent. it runs of batteries and has a back-light and override function so is ultimately versatile.Installation was simple and easily connected to the existing wiring.Overall this is an excellent product and highly recommended. It works well and is simple to use. What more could you want?

This is the 2nd one I bought and it's even better than the 1st because it now comes with a table top support bracket. The Salus wireless setup easy to install and very low maintenance, just requiring 2 AA batteries in the 'sender' once or twice a year. The best thing about the thermostats are their portability. You can take one into the room you are using and be sure that the temperature in that room will be as you've set it I was hoping that 2 could be used simultaneously in different rooms, but that doesn't seem possible. Once the reset button is pushed on one thermostat the system locks on to that thermostat. You can, I guess wire up 2 receivers to your heating system to get this feature, but I probably won't bother. One request for Salus, why can't we have 2 wall cradles provided to enable the thermostat to be moved easily between 2 rooms?Read full review...
