I have many Staub cocottes, from the 11cm oval to the 23cm oval, including several round ones. I also have some Le Creuset oval cocottes (in 25,27 and 29cm) in Satin Black because the domed shape of the lids on these is better for roasting such things as chicken. Generally speaking, though, the quality of Staub is much superior to Le Creuset. For one thing, they all have a black interior, which is much preferable as it will become non stick with time. By contrast, only the satin black range in Le Creuset has this feature. Secondly, the enamel on the outside is beautiful, with semi transparent hues. Thirdly, the design is better: the lids are heavier, which means that more moisture stays in,they have inner spikes which redistribute cooking juices, and the handles stick out a little more and are rectangular instead of semi-circular, which means that you can hold them with less risk of burning yourself against the body of the cocotte.As you probably gathered I'm a great fan of good quality cast iron. You get a crust on meat with it that nothing else provides, rice cooks up fluffy and light, and most importantly for me bread comes out perfect everytime. It has a crust like artisan bread and a wonderful taste. Contrary to what many recipes stipulate, I do not heat up the whole cocotte before hand. I preheat the lid to the maximum temperature my oven allows (245°C) for about 40mn. Meanwhile I let my dough (made with very little yeast and left overnight) rise again in the body. I put to hot lid on top, turn down the oven temperature to 200°C, and then bake. I get perfect results, chewy, flavoursome crust and tender inside.Anyhow, these Staub are versatile, durable and beautiful. What more do you want? (ah, I know: a cheaper price. But you get what you pay for...).

We love French cuisine and have enjoyed watching Rick Stein driving through France on TV recently trying some of the more traditional regional dishes. As well as fine cuisine the French also have a reputation for quality cookware, with Staub being one of the top manufacturers of enamelled cast iron cooking pots and bakeware. A Cocotte is also known as a Dutch Oven or Casserole Dish, depending on where it is used, and this Round 16cm version by Staub is about as good as they get. This traditional round design of the cast-iron Cocotte has self-basting spikes for continuous natural basting, and this model features an enamelled matte black interior, with a smooth bottom, plus a nickel knob on the lid.This 16cm size is perfect for cooking for one (or two if seconds are not required!) then after use the finish is easy to clean as it is also dishwasher-safe. Staub cookware is not cheap and nearly one hundred and ten pounds may seem a lot of money for a small cooking pot – however, this is a product that you will be able to pass on to future generations after you have had a lifetime of use from it. Quality like Staub's doesn't come cheap – and this is certainly not a cheap product by any means – however if you are looking for top-quality then this popular French brand won't disappoint, an easy five stars for design and build quality.

We love this mini cocotte and use it regularly. It works on an induction hob and can also go into the oven. It is quite weighty but because it is small it is very manageable. I did think it might be too small to be useful but actually it is fab for making dinner for one or lunch for two with no left overs to worry about... I feel it has reduced food waste for me - which is brilliant.Cooks so well - I use it to fry off my veg and sear the meat on the hob and then either leave it simmering or pop it in the oven - and then it looks very nice on the dining table - so a big save on washing up too.The other thing I really like about this is that it keeps things moist - I sometimes do a little roastin it and it works so well - the self basting feature really does work.In general I think this makes food taste better than my cooking does on its own - which is a win. It also fits into a counter top oven with ease so is a great idea if you are cooking in one of these. I always hand wash it as I love it too much to risk the dishwasher - but you probably could dishwash it without hurting it. It is lovely quality and I think it will last forever. The one thing i have finally learnt with regards to cookware is that you get what you pay for. I spent years wondering why i couldnt make a decent omelette, then i got a decent heavy bottomed frying pan and woah!!!! Omelettes are so easy. I discovered that making an omelette in a frying pan with a dome in the centre is quite difficult. Thats where this comes in, yes its expensive, yes its heavy but its better to have a few items of decent cookware than lots of cheap stuff.This apparently is a cocotte, no idea what one of those is, to me its a casserole dish! It has some nifty features. The inside of the lid had bumps all over it so the cooking vapours that condense on the lid fall back onto the food all over rather than down the sides.The lid is heavy and fits perfectly.I like the fact that this pan can be used on every cooking surface, every hob type (inc induction), in the open and even a fire. Its so versatile. I was interested to read about using it as a bread oven, im definitely going to have a go at that. Id recommend this to anyone who wants to improve the quality of their cooking but n ot someone who isnt all that strong as its is very heavy.

When I got this I was pleasantly surprised by the way it's presented, with a lovely ?, in a sturdy box, ready to be gifted to a keen chef. With its price in mind, I was still a little apprehensive, as...it's a pot, right? It doesn't do your shopping for you, doesn't chop up your veggies and cook a three-course meal on its own, why so expensive?Well....it's not just a pot, as I discovered. I used it to seal a little joint of beef ( just enough for two) on the stove and then transferred it into the oven, having put some spuds in and...that's it! Literally! I have no idea how it works, but meat was to die for and potatoes were perfectly done. I thought it would be like in a slow cooker - all soggy and stew-like,but it was a proper top notch roast meal with minimum effort. Literally lightly fry on each side, add your herbs and your veggies, a tiny bit of water ( if meat is lean) and off it goes in the oven...and that's it! Impressed! And I like the size - just enough for a family of two or for one with a big appetite!

Given the choice between this and LeCreuset despite the social status tag attached to the latter, this is actually a brilliant quality that will last and last especially due to the black interior which will not become as marked and stained and the texture will become non-stick over time.This is super heavy and retains heat really well. We used this as a serving dish for vegetable sides at a family dinner and this kept the food hot for long after our other serving dishes had not! Because of course this is what it is designed to do in the oven to retain and distribute a steady heat across the pot to cook the food.It is however small when you look at the money.These are investment pieces that are not going to be everyday cookware for the majority of people, but if you have the money then definitely think about this if you want value for your money. Also if you are looking for investment pieces to collect over time (or put on a gift registry) then this brand is a great choice

I was sent the 16cm pot to review. We have a number of cast iron pots made by another famous french manufacturer. They are years old and still going strong. They came with a lifetime warranty and we have never had to use it. I expected the same quality from this brand.Firstly, this pot is very small. I have no real idea of why anyone would buy such a small pot. If you are on your own, I guess a 16cm pot may be okay for your needs or if you want to cook an individual portion of some dish, it would be okay. For anything else, it is far too small. The pot itself is made from good quality materials and it can easily go from stovetop to oven without any issues. The lid is ridged so to allow basting.The quality of the enamel is very good and the heat distribution is excellent. Overall, this is a great quality product, which works very well. My only gripe is in the size, the 16cm is far too small. Other than size, I am happy to Highly Recommend it.

Absolutely love this pot, it's a stunning bright red, well made, strong handles and sturdy lid, fairly weighty but built to last.For me this is the perfect size (18cm) for a family stew, I fill this up in the morning and have it on the hob low full of vegetables and leave it simmering and by evening it's ready to go. When full with ingredients and water it is pretty heavy for me to lift as it's heavy all ready but this is just the same as brands like Le Creuset etc, but it's building up my muscles everytime I cook with it!!Amazing quality and while it's fairly pricey, this is what you can expect to pay generally, I've seen some good price offers on this so it's worth checking across the colour ranges to see if one becomes lower than the others if you're not fussy.Would definitely recommend, it's well made, well designed and looking forward to cooking more with this. One pot is all you need!

In a nutshell: expensive, heavy and exceptional. The pot costs a lot but is certainly the best you can buy. There’s a debate about whether Staub or Le Creuset are the best pots. I think it’s personal taste but this is the first Staub we’ve had and it’s superb. The construction is excellent and using it is a joy. I like the idea that it’s self-basting and the lid is a great fit, literally sealing the contents. Cleaning it is a doddle. I had to laugh at the fact that the manufacturer says it’s dishwasher safe – it’s cast iron and can stand up to 500 degrees F, so I think some boiling water won’t hurt.The presentation of the pot is also worth mentioning.It comes in a range of colours – I have the Cherry version – and they really are lovely. Long gone are the days of drab pots and utensils in the kitchen. This pot is certainly worth five stars.

For looks and quality this Staub Cocotte has it all.My 16cm is just the right size when cooking for 2, big enough for a main but also a good size if you want to use it for a side dish too. Not only is it great for cooking it will also look lovely on your table when serving.Suitable for use on the hob or in the oven, I've used it a few times now. A beef stew on the hob was cooked perfectly as was the apple crumble I did in the oven. Washing afterwards was easy too, its dishwasher safe but I did mine by hand with very little effort required.No its not cheap but in terms of quality and workmanship its made to last,and if it doesn't Staub guarantee their cast iron products for 30 years when used in a domestic environment so its worth every penny!

This is a great cast-iron cocotte that delivers on all fronts: quality, functionality and general hob appeal!The pan is made from solid cast iron in a black finish that is extremely durable, and the fact that the whole dish is dishwasher safe means it is super easy to keep clean.Though the diameter of 16 cm isn’t the largest, it does complement other pans nicely and can be used to cater for smaller meals or for cooking e.g. side dishes. The spikes in the pan lid also help with condensation so you can be sure food cooking in the pan won’t dry out when slow cooking.I can guarantee we’ll be giving this pan plenty of use now!

Amazing,I have used Le Creset before and these are just in a league of their own, overnight porridge in the AGA is so different it hasn't dried out like it used to with le Creuset. I really think the dimpled lid must make all the difference. The Grey looks amazing and the whole thing is just quality quality quality. Looking forward to buying more sizes over the coming months! This is proper enamel finish and not sprayed paint like the Creuset, when you put them together theres simply no comparison and well worth the extra money. They will last for ever!

Very expensive, in fact like another well known French make over priced. I bought a similar sized cast iron dish in a local super market 2/3rds cheaper and just as good quality. Like 'the other' make you are paying for a name.There is no doubting the quality and of course it works beautifully well, if you want one to make a meal for one, which was my plan, I would say this one is a little small, if I could rewind my life a few weeks I would buy the next size up.If you want to impress people and let them think you are rich or if you are rich go for it.

I have bought 18cm size, I was hesitant about choosing a size between 16cm and 18cm .I think I have made a good decision.18cm is ideal for 2-3 people. I bought this pot particularly to make sushi /Asian rice, if I had chosen 16cm it would not be enough for 2-3 people .If one person look for one portion pot, definitely buy 16cm , but if you look for 2-3 people portions, 18cm is a right size pot.It’s easy to clean and the grey colour looks contemporary and modern. Also rice has been well cooked in this pot. I am pleased with this pot.

I wasn’t aware of STAUB before being offered their products to try, but I’m glad I was!A weighty little cocotte, cherry red I had a worry that it would be easily chipped or that the paint would be poor quality but paranoid for no reason. As soon as you unpack it you can feel that this is the real thing. We use the pot mainly for casseroles and stews but it definitely is multifunctional. Easy to clean and two handles means it’s easily portable especially needed considering the weight (more so for larger sizes).
