I've been "messing about" with old cars all my life. Even earned my living at it for a while! Amongst the many interesting problems to overcome is how to undo a really tight nut when all you can use is an open ender. For instance a tight/corroded lock nut on a track rod end which you need to undo to adjust the toe setting or replace a track rod end. I don't like using heat on these because of the plastic packing inside the joint and the dust boot which can be damaged. A plumbers pipe wrench or other locking wrench will often break the hold of the nut to the track rod end but can distort the nut and jam it more tightly on its thread because the jaws of these type of tool act on the two faces of the nut which are opposite each other. There is also the damage the serrated teeth do to the flats they grip. With all this in mind, I was wandering around a hardware store whilst on holiday a few years ago (her indoors had gone for an extended wander with her sister to look at house furnishings and the like) when I came upon a promotional display of the largest (17 to 24mm) size of this set of three tools. It looked a good idea, I was on holiday and bored, it was on special offer, I love unusual tools anyway so I bought it! Well, almost right away I had to replace the track rod ends on my Allegro - MOT fail! Soaked the nuts in release oil the night before and, although it was a struggle, the tool did the job. I think it works because it grips on 3 flats (120° part) so there is no tendency to crush the nut. Also it doesn't mark the nut faces and the harder you lean on it the tighter it grips the nut, unlike an open ender which tends to spread under load. I'm sure there will be fixings which are so tight/corroded that they will defeat it and I'll have to get the torch out but for everything else this is the solution. All this is very well but why am I now buying it's baby brother? Well, there's this leaking wheel cylinder with a very tight union nut but no serious corrosion on the pipe. There's no way an open ender is going to tackle it. In the past I would have cut the metal pipe and removed the union with a small single hex socket but then I have to make a new pipe and there's always the union on the other end of the metal pipe which is probably going to be just as stubborn! Having had such brilliant success with "big brother" I'm expecting great things of "junior" here. There are many other uses for these tools. I find DIY plumbing jobs an interesting application and did I mention the interesting way it ratchets round fittings without having to reposition as you would have to with an open ender? I don't think I'll use these tools frequently because I have many other conventional tools for most situations but on the odd occasion when I do need it it's going to be invaluable!

I have one of these, and the larger one, in my toolbox for those awkward jobs. It is good for unusual size heads, tight places, and slightly rounded corners (it won't do really rounded heads). It will only fit in places you can fit an open-ended, so no recessed heads (but everything has limitations.) I used to use a mole wrench but this is lighter, gets into tighter spaces, and does less damage. The alleged ratchet action is actually a slightly automated release-reposition-re-grip action, which requires a bit of a knack to save a few moments. You can do it with practice.Mine is strong, and shows no sigh of wear after several years. The more force you put on the tighter it grips.I would not be without it.
