In total opposition to the Bahco Stilson wrench I've just reviewed that was a bit low end, here we have the tool that made Bahco what it is. The humble but ever so useful shifter. Or adjustable wrench for non marine engineers. And being a Bahco shifter you have in your hands the tool that generations of engineers have used to keep ships afloat and sailing from port to port. I don't think I'd be exaggerating to suggest that more than a few ships made it because the bloke in the sweaty boilersuit had in his back pocket a trusty Bahco shifter which nipped up the pipe or nut that would have stopped the job. I know I have.In marine engineering circles the Bahco has almost mythical status that is ingrained from the moment you step onto a ship as a cadet - at least when the UK had a merchant navy that is.The reason we love them so much is because they are near indestructible. Its no exaggeration to say that engineers on ships abuse tools more than anyone else, mostly because sometimes you have to. I've put a six foot pipe on a Bahco and used it to tighten a nut on a steam pipe with considerable force and not broken it.And they stay usable. One of the big differences between Bahco shifters and the weaker limp wristed stuff that they stand above is that even after being hammered you can still use the nut to adjust it easily. And if all goes really pear shaped change the movable bits. But, the big difference is the jaw width. On the near magical 9031 a number that engineers know and love - the jaws can open further than your mother in law when in full rant. Truly epic and bloody useful especially when you are trying to nip up pipe fittings. Trust me,when you have humped a bag of tools up 50m in a machinery space at 65C heat only to find that you don't have a spanner quite big enough it can be a heart breaking experience. This is why marine engineers grap a shifter or two as soon as they walk our of a control room on rounds. That tool in your back pocket could save you a lot of sweat.Where I've found this to be idea is on hydraulic pipework and fridge systems to be honest. The size of nuts often used are just bigger than a standard Bahco and this little lifesaver goes wide enough to be properly useful. So, if you are looking for a shifter then look no further. There is no better on the market no matter how shiny or expensive (Snap-On which jams).

You can refer to the customer photos I posted which illustrate some of the points I make. These are lightweight, well balanced and comfortable wrenches most suitable for electronic and plumbing applications (rather than heavy engineering). Their short 8" length limits the torque that may be applied - fortunate because I'm not at all sure they would stand up to much abuse without straining the jaw mechanism. Both the 9031 and the 9031T share the same body & handle but the 9031T (narrow jaw version) has one side of the jaws milled down which allows access into tight spaces or gripping thin nuts. Both offer an exceptionally wide opening of around 38mm.The two wrenches work well together in many circumstances where one threaded component has to be held in place whilst the other is used to loosen/tighten the other. That's the reason I bought both. The overall construction is very good - accurate forged parts which are correctly hardened and ground, and which fit together well. My one criticism is that as received there were many razor sharp corners left on the edges of the jaws, and also the inside faces were not as well finished as they might be. Both of these issues can be quickly dealt with by spending some time with oilstone to knock the sharp corners off and (for my 9031) remove some lumps and flatten the jaw faces. These jobs had already been done before I took the photos referred to above. This is worth doing if working on nice chromed plumbing parts otherwise these tools will scratch the finish all too easily (and you may also cut your fingers because they were that sharp). Treated well I would expect these tools to last a lifetime.

This is a great little spanner (now),, nice size, and a quality piece of kit,,..However, when it arrived, the edges of the jaws, were very sharp, so sharp in fact, they could cut paper,, (yes, I tried it !)..Anyway,, some time later, after a serious session with some wet and dry paper, and several minutes on the buffing wheel, it's now sheer perfection, in adjustability, and bolt and nuttyness,,,I just wanted to warn people, that it might need a bit of fettling, when you get it, to make it usable. !! If I'd tried to use it, straight out of the box, (actually it just came it a plastic bag,),, I dread to think what it would have done to the lovely chrome fittings on my shower. !!!So, to re-cap,it's superb, and I hope mine was a one - off, and they're usually ready to go, when you get them .. Still giving it 5 stars.(maybe I should have got it from Screwfix, it wouldn't have taken ages to arrive, and I'd have been able to inspect it, before paying,)Caveat Emptor,, as they say,,,

I got myself this adjustable spanner to facilitate working on our ageing heating system valves which are linked in 28mm pipe and have 38mm nuts on the compression fittings. The jaws go to a maximum size of 38mm without any issues and have a sure grip on the nut without slippage. Adjustability is good and once set, it stays there, unlike some cheaper brands which constantly need resetting. The rubber gripped handle is comfortable in the hand and is much nicer than a bare steel handle when using outdoors in cold weather. Without doubt it is an excellent tool and is about the only 8 inch adjustable spanner that can open to such a wide degree. If you only buy one adjustable spanner in your life then this is the one to get,I just wish I had discovered it earlier instead of wasting money on cheap adjustables in the past. There is a 9031T (which I also have)available that has slightly slimmer jaws for working in tight areas and a chrome version 9031C

I have been using one of these Bacho wrenches for years.Benefits:These are highly engineered professional use wrenches. You really cannot compare to the budget versions that are abundant.Hardly any movement in the jaws so a nice tight grip. This is MAJOR plus point that differentiates this to other cheaper tools. The jaws are stiff and stay in place this minimised slippages and any consequential rounding of nuts and bolts. Do not underestimate the importance of this one fact!Narrow jaws, so you can get into the tightest of nuts, excellent for plumbing. Often in plumbing you may have a series of nuts against each other. The narrow jaws make it very easy to pin point the exact nut and not overlap on to the next.Really wide jaws, easily tighten bigger and smaller nuts no problem.Well balanced.Soft grip handle that fits perfectly in your hand.OUTSTANDING kit for the price it is A1!

This is not a cheap adjustable spanner and happily there is virtually nothing for me to complain about ... It is easy to hold and feels just right in the hand ... The finish looks to be very serviceable ... The comfortable handle covering is a sensible size (not too thick) and without any covering to the very end of the handle ... The metal end of the handle has a 10mm hole in it should you want to hang the spanner on the wall in the workplace ... The jaws move very smoothly though there is a slight amount of slack in the jaw movement ... The jaws stay parallel throughout the travel, so this slight amount of slack doesn't seem to be detrimental in use ...I think that this spanner will give long service as the build quality is excellent ... I can therefore give this a full five star rating.Read full review...

The Bahco tool range has a reputation for quality, especially when it comes down to their adjustable spanner range. The build quality is excellent and there is very little slip on the worm screw once the desired jaw width has been set. The tool also has a wide opening (38mm) for an eight inch adjustable when compared to other adjustables of a similar length. The handle is comfortable to hold and wipes clean easily of oil, grease, scum, etc.I've used this when I've needed a second spanner the same size, for 'odd' sized nuts you seem to get with some flat pack furniture, for mechanical work on my car, plumbing, the list goes on!Whether you do occasional DIY or use tools as part of your trade (all day, every day) having a good adjustable to hand is invaluable and I would recommend this spanner to anyone.

You might think that at £20, it seems a little steep for an adjustable spanner. However these Bacho's are worth investing in. A joy to use, unlike other adjustable's I have purchased over the years these seem to work as they should with little or no movement from the jaws once set to the desired gap. The thumb turn screw easily adjust's the jaws to the desired size. Great design with the jaws, that allow them to get into the tightest of spaces. Use them for pluming all the time, used as a pair they are indispensable at tightening a multiple of joints. The 8" will do most common sizes and are probably the most flexible. The rubber around the handle is a nice touch and of high quality.

This one tool replaced the three rubbish adjustable wrenches I already have. It goes wider than my largest wrench and the nose is narrower than my smallest wrench. I can get a nice grip on it without it slipping in my hand. The claw mouth holds firm after I set it and doesn't slide further open whilst I'm using it.Very high quality. This wrench changed the way I look at tools. It's worth spending a bit more for good quality. It lowers frustration levels when the tool does what it's supposed to do. Plus, in this case, it's a pleasure to hold and look at.Photos give a feel for size. My hand is women's large or man's medium.

This is a good adjustable spanner. Decided to buy from Amazon as a tiny bit cheaper than Screwfix (pennies not pounds!). It did for most of my plumbing needs in the bathroom and kitchen, but I have awkward small gaps under the bathroom sink which this spanner was unfortunately no good for as it wouldn't fit. I had to eventually get fixed basin wrench and an adjustable basin wrench from my local Screwfix retailer to finish the last job. However, this is a good spanner which does fit into tight gaps. Not such a bargain as I later found a good adjustable spanner in Super savers for £1.99 which works just as well!

In my plumbing tasks I need to install 22mm and 15mm compression fittings such as stop taps. Many adjustable wrenches are too bulky and the jaws broad across the section you need to insert, usually in a tight space to do the nut up. These things are great, the jaws are narrow the tool is relatively short so fit in my tool belt. I bought two, one for holding the body the other for tightening the nut.Why did I give it 4, well its made in Spain, they have a history of using any steel available unlike the UK or Sweden. I could be wrong in this case it Bahco, time will tell.

I needed a spanner to get nose-on into a recessed hole and strong enough wo withstand sidewards pressure. These looked the part and worked a treat. They have replaced the existing shifters in the toolbox and are still as good as new. Really like them as they move easily without binding. Jaws marked with scale to preset if you know the across the flats size but easier to just twiddle into positionQuality product but, as with all Bahco, pricey with long term economy.

This is the best 8in adjustable spanner I own! Its key features are:It opens to 40mm, where many of a similar size open to 30mm or less. The jaws are only 10mm wide tapering to 6mm, hence it can be used in narrow gaps where most conventional adjustable wrenches will not go. It has an accurate metric scale from 0 to 38mm. It is very well made and also has a soft grip making it easy to apply large loads. In summary, it is an excellent tool. Highly recommended.

24.8.2018

Very happy, well made with a tiny amount of wobble. What is important is the it feels precise and once adjusted for the nut doesn't need adjusting again every time you take it off and put it back on. The metal is hard and jaw has good 90deg edges so it doesn't burr and fits cleanly onto the nut. I have used it on chromed nuts and it didn't leave any marks.I wish I had bought it 10 years ago, and have just bought a 2nd one for my other tool kit.

22.5.2016

This must be the 5th one of these particular wrenches that I have bought. (I have lost the others, usually left in a loft or under a floor) I have tried other cheaper ones but always return to these. The wide and slim jaws make this the most useful and probably most used tool in my bag. Just wish they would make one with automatic return to base when lost, then it would be perfect.
