My husband has spent the entirety of his life drawing with wooden Koh-I-Noor pencils. I felt that now that he is creating professional portraits for selling, it was time to go for an upgrade. He felt a bit skeptical of this as he had never felt or held a pencil with 3 x the weight of his wooden pencils. But to our surprise the mechanical pencil feels sturdy, tight and buttery smooth to stroke - and it is his "Go To" instrument for fine art drawing, cartoons illustrations and sketching. It is odd to explain but casting the line work is much more fluid, giving a very clean stroke without crumbs/shavings influencing the texture of the graphite. Thanks to the pencil's adjustable lead grip and 2mm lead sticks, the taper control is much more trustworthy meaning that it can handle much more pressure for rendering, outlining and even handwriting. Not to mention grant the ability to adjust the lead length in full control to fit your habitual needs - just in case like my husband, you like to experiment with distancing the lead further away from the barrel.Without the worry of a splinter scratching the texture of paper, lead that is too delicate to work with, adjusting to a pencil that inevitably decreases in size or falling victim to damp degradation - you can guarantee good gripping distance, consistent weight and a dense lead that handles firm pressure extremely well. My husband carries this thing for sketchbook drawing, note taking and committed long illustrations for framing. If you have the funds to pick this up, do yourself a favor and invest in yourself. He cannot stress enough the improvement in his line quality and his confidence using pencils all day. If you can also afford an extra bit more, pick up the lead pointer as well. Sharpening 2mm lead with a cheap portable sharpener will otherwise spell doom to a crisp taper and chisel the lead into debris.

I use these to sketch with before I ink over them or use watercolour. They're very nice to use. Lighter than the rotring version but heavier than the faber castle tk. They feel well balanced when you hold them near to the metal knurled section but start to feel tip heavy if you hold for a loose style nearer to the clip end. The clip has a lead marker that you line up with an arrow. I remove this because it always rotates into my hand when I sketch and rubs my skin and irritates me. It's also thicker than the faber castell and slightly longer because of the included sharpener push. The blue plastic bodies seem to have more flex than they used to and feel slightly cheaper quality. The clutch mechanism is really nice and smooth and grips the leads securely.I still however find myself using the faber castle tk, it has a grippy hexagonal barrel when this staedtler is mostly circular and rotates too easily. The faber castle is also more balanced if you hold further away from the lead. It's still a good pencil but it has it's niggles. I own a few so they must be good. I always use one of these if I need to clip onto a sketchbook when I'm out, I've lost too many faber castles this way. The costs are almost identical so it really comes down to the balance you prefer and the clip. Either one is brilliant.

I have been using these pencils for over forty years. I lost my first pencil about thirty years ago, and use the replacement (now well over twenty years old) on a daily basis. they are pretty much indestructible. I have just bought a third one - so I now have two - one left on my desk, and the other n my briefcase. If I remember correctly my first pencil came with an HB lead - I found this too soft for everyday writing, and ordered a pack of 12 "H" leads - these are perfect for everyday writing (not too hard either).I would imagine that if you plan to use your pencil for drawing/sketching the HB lead will be fine.I imagine that you can get HH leads - probably best used for Tech Drawing, but does anyone do that anymore? CAD being so available.I would echo other reviews and recommend that you purchase one of the "barrel" sharpeners. You get two options for sharpening - a fine point, and a super fine point.

Now that the Eagle or Berol Turquoise clutch pencils are but a fond memory, this would be my choice for a robust 2mm lead holder. The Staedtler has been around for many a year in more or less the same form, and in truth the choice between it and the Turquoise never came down to much more than colour preference. It's solidly made with a stiff, utterly reliable clutch mechanism, and is durable enough to stand up to a workshop environment for a long time. The lead pointer, for those who use such things, is effective, and it would take some serious effort to break the clip. The knurling isn't as nicely done as it was in days of yore, but it's good enough. For general or heavy duty purposes it's ideal, but if one is looking for something lighter with more finesse the Mitsubishi Uni has the edge. At any rate it's a long established product with a proven track record and can be bought with confidence.

This is considered THE classic clutch pencil among artists, engineers or architects and it is easy to see why. Firstly it is very well engineered and perfectly balanced without being too heavy or light. It is about 15cm from end to end (without lead). The main body is plastic and has a knurled metal grip which is comfortable to hold. It has a metal clip and push button that has an integrated lead sharpener. The pencil takes standard 2mm diameter leads and comes with 1 x HB lead. It can take other brands of lead without issues.Considering it is just a pencil, it is quite expensive and so are the Staedtler leads. But I think these are minor issues since this will last for years if looked after. It also does not change balance when the lead gets used up unlike a normal wooden pencil. This is the main advantage of a clutch pencil vs a normal one. Recommended.

I haven't submitted a star rating for sheerness because I've no idea what it is, so there's that.Anyhow, I've been using these things for years, along with their wooden counterparts, and I can honestly say they are the absolute best I have ever tried - and I've tried many, including several vintage Faber-Castell holders. Somehow, Staedtler get it right first time, and any changes are minor, meaning the leadholder you use now is essentially the same as the one they sold years ago.It would be silly to get worked up about a leadholder but believe me, when you spend a long time drawing in any capacity, comfort is a major factor, as much as line quality and lead consistency. The Mars Technico has a perfect feel and enough heft to use for long periods without feeling cramped.

The perfect drawing instrument - I'd been meaning to buy one for years, having seen others use them, and wish I'd done it earlier. It sits very comfortably in the hand, it can be sharpened to needle point (with its own sharpener - which can't be used on any other clutch pencil, but then you don't need any others) and the leads are of extremely high quality, as you'd expect from this company. It's a timeless drawing implement, which can only improve drawing technique and will be, I hope, available for at least the rest of my artistic life. It's just a pleasure to use - it looks good, it feels right: it's one of the best investments in art materials that I've ever made.

Sturdy build, has a very nice weight to it,(slightly heavier than a mechanical pencil), lead can be sharpened to produce very fine lines, extended to lightly render and with a bit of pressure produces thicker lines. Any 2mm lead of varying density can be used with it.Above and beyond any other tool I've owned for croquis/illustration purposes.First discovered several comic book artists used this for penciling and now I understand why, it is an inspiration to use.I highly recommend this to anybody who is jaded by pencils getting shorter as you draw with them, and the shortcomings that mechanical pencils have (leads breaking; little variation in line width).

what can you say about a lead holder, it is very well balanced once you pull the pocket clip off and feels really good in the hand, I've got about 9 or so of them now and the same number of the Faber equivalent, these are a little heavier and sturdier than the Faber ones which I prefer the extra weight, they always stay the same length balance and weight and don't get smaller as you sharpen them which is why I love lead holders, I usually break open Derwent pencils and use the leads because although I have written to them as yet Derwent wont sell just their leads which in my opinion are the best in the World...Big statement I know but it's what I have found,

A great clutch pencil for all intensive purposes, has great form and function, true gem from Staedtler. Although a warning about the product that's being advertised with an 'integrated' sharpener. It isn't featured on the actual clutch pencil, when purchased from the seller known as 'AbbeyShake', when I confronted the seller about this issue, I was arrogantly told to just 'buy a sharpener from them', then subsequently all my emails afterwards were simply ignored. So my advice is to purchase a great clutch pencil, but just avoid 'Abbey Shake' and you will receive the advertised item.

I am a late convert to 2mm clutch pencils. I usually use 0.5mm or 0.7mm pencils that are thin enough to have a usable point. 2 mm pencils need sharpening. If you get this pencil , plus a sharpener like the Staedtler Mars Lead Pointer Tub you will have a great tool, the point of which is more robust than 0.5mm or 0.7mm leads.I have treated myself to a Rotring 800 2mm which is altogether more meaty that this (and is not without issues of its own), but this is a good bit of kit even if it is a bit flimsy.

I had one of these at school (just after the ice age and before the great war) and loved it. I agree with another reviewer here it's not as solid in the hand as the old version, but what is built that way nowadays? The mechanism is simple and therefore efficient and probably never going to go wrongThe reality is for £5.28 it's hardly going to break the bank to order a new one - and as they sent me a pack of 5, presumably by mistake, rather than just the one I ordered, I'm willing to take a chance.

Really nice pencil. I had one years ago and it lasted well. I have just ordered a replacement as the last one has been misplaced. Please note.. The pencil has a built in sharpener, extend the lead to roughly 1cm, then remove the top (clicker to release the lead) and insert the lead into the hole in the top. Rotate clockwise and counter clockwise until sharp..Recently I read that people were complaining there was no sharpener included as per the description... Well there it is :-)

I used a similar STAEDTLER Mars leadholder clutch pencil like this one when I was in art school almost 15 years ago. I used that one for all those years without any problem but naturally it got very old so I purchased this item - actually 2 - because it does what its supposed to do and I'm really fond of STAEDTLER's products, I'm sure I'll continue to use this one for many years, too.I'm also very happy with Amazon's excellent service, everything's good as always :)

First mechanical pencil after always losing or pencils breaking/not being able to be sharpened. Nice solid grip, used it for weeks and still plenty of carbon leads in it to keep going. Not ideal for technical/detail work, but for quick sketches or to use for not taking it's excellent.Only down side is the mess made after using the sharpener built in at the top. It makes a nice fine point, but just have to be cautious of the excess shavings left in it.
