I love this range of products. Its really well designed by people with lots of knowledge of children learning to write. These are designed with the different stages of learning to write in mind, from starting out, where the aim is to make sure the child doesnt hold the pencil in a fist grip, through making handwriting better with products like this one to writing with pens for the first time. This is an ergonomic shaped mechanical pencil. You have to advance the lead through the pencil rather than sharpen the wood to reveal the lead. The lead is quite thick for a mechanical pencil, which is a positive since most kids would eaisly break the lead in a standard mechanical pencil. The business end of the pencil is also cushioned so if the child tries to use excess pressure the nib area just moves into the barrell. This saves the lead from breaking, at least for a while. The pencil has a large button on the end to advance the lead as it wears down. The barrel is shaped so it guides little fingers to the right grip to hold a pencil with. The (green) end of the pencil unscrews to reveal an internal plastic lead receptacle. To refil the pencil just add more leads (available separately). The pencil comes with 3 leads and when the first one runs out (or stops advancing when you click) just pull any remaining lead out and a little shake got another lead to come through when i clicked. This is specifically for a right handed person and fits even my grown up hand perfectly. Another nice touch is it has a label for you to add the childs name. I'll be honest, my degree in medical microbiology hasnt helped me work out how the label is supposed to work. Im just off to the internet with a magnifying glass and bright light, hope it will help me figure out the series of teeny pictures im supposed to follow (label has two layers according to pictures, i can only find one, i must be getting old!!)EDIT: its official, im old, managed to peel the top clear label off the packaging and leave the label you write on stuck to the box. oh dear.

Thankfully writing issues aren’t too much of a problem in our house, though our youngest, a leftie, is still in the early stages. So our interest in a pencil like this was not a problem-solving one, but still, anything which will encourage the kids to practice and feel comfortable with writing is a good thing, and every little will help. Even just the novelty of having a bright chunky colourful new pencil to use is a plus of course.Despite being subtly inclined towards left-handed grip, we also let our daughter (a rightie) try this out and she picked it up and used it intuitively and without even commenting on it,so it’s clearly not “rightie unfriendly”.We got an ‘ultramarine/orange’ one (they could’ve just called it “blue and orange” but maybe the marketing department decided that sounded too basic) and it’s an attractive colour, and gender neutral for any kids who are bothered by that kind of thing. It’s got a broad nib. If you keep it sharp, the lines it draws can be both bold and fine, and the angle of the pencil does have an effect on how thick or scratchy the resultant line is, making it strangely satisfying as a pencil even for grown-up use.The whole concept of this does feel a bit overdesigned and expensive for anything other than the most extreme cases of a left-handed child who can’t write with symmetrical pencils. For everyday use there are much simpler and cheaper mechnical pencils, or even non-mechanical pencils (a.k.a. “pencils”) which will work fine. But if your child would be encouraged by the arrival of a new attractive-looking chunky pencil and it would encourage them to get practising their writing more, then it’s probably a price worth paying.

This is a chunky and surprisingly elaborate mechanical pencil that feels a little bit like the handwriting equivalent of cycling with stabilisers on. The thick grip is intuitive but it does feel like you’re holding a baby’s crayon, or one of those colour-choosing biros you can get with eight different nibs in it, rather than a proper and normal pencil. The indentations are subtly inclined to be a better fit to right-handed people, but it’s a marginal difference and for right-handed people (who aren’t really left all that uncatered-for on the stationery front) it’s unlikely to make a huge amount of difference. We also tried this with a ‘leftie’ and he said it was OK to write with too,so it can’t be all that right-hand-exclusive.I agree with other reviewers who’ve said that this thing is over-engineered and there is a little bit too much give in it, but it does have a slightly thicker-than-average lead, with comes out with a rather pleasant script-style writing which gives quite professional-looking results for grown-ups. (In other words, it made my signature look nicely swishy.) The slightly thicker lead may also hopefully mean it’s a bit more durable in smaller hands as well.We got a blue-green one which is nicely colour-neutral for children who are overly concerned with the “pink for girls blue for boys” nonsense and it was a big hit in our house (hence giving 4 stars instead of the 3 I’m inclined towards), so much so that I don’t know how long the lead will last but we’ll see. I personally think it’s overkill, and at seven quid currently overpriced for what it is, but for kids needing a bit of encouragement with their writing or drawing it might help.

This mechanical pencil with spring-loaded lead comes in a bright and cheery aqua and lime (product page says lemon but it seems on the green side to me, though this could be the close proximity to the aqua) colour combination. It's ergonomically shaped for right handed users and makes it easier for children to get their hands into the correct tripod position for writing. This pencil is aimed at older children - no specific age range but on the back of the pack it is the oldest child shape which is shaded in). There is a easy start pencil with a 3.15mm lead available for younger children. It has a 1.4mm lead, this is thicker than you'd usually find in a mechanical pencil (about 0.7mm?)so presumably this will be less likely to break if put under increased pressure. It does come with two spare leads, these can be found by unscrewing the top part of the pencil from the bottom. The pencil also comes with three name tags, these are inside the packet behind the pencil - very easy to throw them away if you're not careful. The name tags stick on the rear (other side to the Stabilo logo) of the pencil.Overall - It is on the expensive side but seems very well made and should last. It's very comfortable to write with and makes it "easy" to keep your fingers in the correct position for writing, worth the expense if your child is struggling. My 4-year old took to it with no problem (under supervision).(Packs of replacement leads are available - currently just over 5.00 for a pack of 12)

This mechanical pencil is aimed at children who are learning to write but it can equally be used by adults looking for a mechanical propelling pencil with a wider nib than other products offer.I liked the 1.4 lead, which gives a bold line when you write and the leads are very easy to replace (you just unscrew the barrel and pop a new lead in - the pencil comes with 2 leads already supplied and they're a decent length so you should get a fair amount of use from them). The propelling function is smooth (a simple click) and distributes a good amount of lead to a size that is long enough to let you write for a while but not so long that it snaps under pressure. The grip is comfortable with moulded rubber making for a comfortable fit for every hand size. It's designed for right handed people but there is a left handed model available too. I liked the yellow and turquoise colour scheme and it's bright and makes the pencil easy to find in my pen pot.My only real criticism is that there's quite a lot of give in the mechanism if you're someone who pushes down a lot when you write, which makes for a more springy experience than I was comfortable with. It's easy enough to get used to (and I found that double clicking the mechanism to produce a longer lead helped to mitigate it) but it is something to be aware of. There's also no clip on the pen, so if you like to attach it to something when it's in your bag or pocket to keep it in one place then this isn't for you.

Stabilo have produced some great products for left and right handers over the years … in fact my son used one of their early left handed pens (he's nineteen now) and it really helped him with his handwriting. This ergonomically mechanical pencil is designed specifically for right handed writers (there is also a left handed version available), it is styled so that it is very comfortable to write and draw with. It has a thicker barrel with large indents positioned where your fingers are likely to be holding giving what is called a tripod grip. These pencils come in an array of bright colours and I received the neon lemon/aquamarine for reviewing purposes. This is a retractable and refillable fine tipped graphite pencil … with a 1.4mm lead,it writes nicely and easily. One clever feature is the cushioned nib which helps to prevent the lead breaking in use … and although this works quite well in normal use, if you tend to press very hard when writing or drawing the lead nib will still snap. All in all a great design that has been executed well. I have no problem in recommending this Stabilo Mechanical Pencil.

A mechanical pencil aimed at children to help improve their hand writing. The pencil is chunky and ergonomically designed to be comfortable and so aid batter writing. The pencil comes in a left and right handed models the main difference being the direction the grip the bottom twists around other than that they are identical. The rubberised grip helps a child to firmly grip the pencil for stability during writing, another factor in improving writing skills. The pencil lead (or graphite as it should correctly be called) is 1.4mm thick which makes it easier to write compared to thinner lead which I would typically use (say 0.4mm to 0.8mm) since this provides a broader surface area and thus less pressure and resistance on the tip. These are however much finer than a conventional pencil so provide a more precise writing tool.A quality product from a great manufacturer that is well designed functional and effective if a little expensive. Comes in right/left hand design and available in 4 great colour schemes.

I got this pencil for my seven-year old nephew and waited a whole term for the 'report back'.I'm pleased to say this propelling pencil has been a huge success for this age-group. He's required to learn to write with pencil, biro and ink pen by his school and I think that's a great idea, but he's struggled with the pencil due to a small amount of disability. This pencil does not function well if you press too hard, so he has been able to correct his grip with practice. The colour scheme found instant favour and it's nice that there's a label for his name, since now the other two want one as well. This pencil is available in other colours and also you can choose left or right-handed.I also love itmyself for sketching. This pencil comes in an easy to open package and is accessible for a visually disabled person like me.

This STABILO EASYergo Mechanical Mechanical Pencil Left Handed has a number of indentations around the pencil so that a person, who is left-handed, has greater ease of using the Mechanical pencil, in a comfortable fashion. The STABILO EASYgraph Handwriting instrument can be used by any age group. This STABILO EASYergo Mechanical appears to be well made and seemed to be robust. Our niece is left-handed, and we asked her to trial the STABILO product. On initial use, our niece was happy and felt additional comfort when using the STABILO as compared to an ordinary pencil. It is good to see that companies are producing products and instruments for left-handed people and this can only be a positive thing. We have no hesitation,in giving this product a good four stars.

Our niece already uses the Stabilo Easy Start left handed pen. Which she says is nice and easy to use use and very comfortable in her hand. This Easy Start left handed pencil is essentially the same ergonomic design. Which are niece reports feels just as comfortable to use. The retractable graphite nib is retractable and, as far as I can tell, reasonably hard wearing. Certainly avoids the mess off sharpening all over the carpet as there's no need to sharpen it. But the main benefit of these Easy Start pens and pencils from Stabilo is their ergonomic design which make them nice and easy for small hands to grip. And In our experience...they simply work.

Being a left handed person myself and using normal pens and pencils I was curious to try this pencil before passing it on to my granddaughter. I found the shape made this comfortable to hold and surprisingly easy to write with. Being brightly coloured this pencil is attractive to children and it has six re fallible leads which you just push down on the pencil to pop the next one out ready to use. The cushioned grip is really comfortable especially when drawing lots and writing lots. I have now passed it on and my granddaughter says that it much better than normal pencils and is really pleased with it. ( she is 7yrs old )

A pencil. Usually these would just have an ordinary thin body, but this is one designed - for right handed people - to be easier to grip than usual. Thus it comes with the lead inside a plastic body. Said plastic body has two indents in the lower middle, one for thumb and one for finger to hold it with. This does work very well and makes it easy to hold. You get the lead to go further out by pressing the top of the pencil. And you can get it to go far out enough such that sharpening it is very doable. For those who have poor handwriting or find it hard to grip writing implements, this is a good product.

It's a right-handed propelling pencil. Unlike many similar devices out there, this one is aimed at kids and is child friendly. The lead is spring loaded, so it doesn't snap easily if you push hard. This is augmented by the thick line )1.4mm) that it draws. If you run out, a simple click at the end will expose more lead, or load a new one if that's what it needs. Writes well, although we found the lead just a bit too thick for our liking. You can personalise it by using the supplied stickers. These are inside the packaging and easy to miss, so don't bin it too quickly! All in all, a decent first pencil.

This mechanical pencil is a good size for children's hands. It has a rubber grip, near the tip, with indentations to guide fingers into their correct placement. For left-handers the indentations are orientated one way and another way for right-handers. My left-handed son likes to use the pencil for drawing and he rates it 'good'. I've tried the pencil, as a right-handed adult and found it comfortable to use.The lead is a common size and are easily obtainable.Like all of the Stabilo products, in the range, that we have tried, it comes with name labels, to identify the pencil incase of a mix-up.
