I was debating myself whether or not we buy this or another Simplehuman product, Rectangular Step Trash Can, Fingerprint-Pro of Brushed Stainless Steel, 50 liter/13 gallon. In fact, I placed an order for the rectangular one, but decided to cancel it and ordered this one. I think I made the right decision. Here are the things that I considered:1) Perfect HeightI realized that this can has a good height -- about 30 inches. That means I don't have to bend forward when I throw things in there. The rectangular one is much lower.: you would have to step on the pedal to open it and lean forward to put garbage in. It may be a minor thing, but if you are a tall person, it may make a difference. Also,we place it at the end of our kitchen island. The rectangular model's lid would hit the edge of our granite every time we open it, which could be annoying and damage the finish of the lid.2) Open-top DesignWe use this can as a recycle bin, i.e., it's for dry and no-odor causing items, so the open design doesn't bother us. It's actually better since a lot of our recycling trash are fairly large.3) Large VolumeIt's pretty large, but can fit 13-gallon regular tall kitchen bag. I tried a cheap superstore tall garbage bag, and it fits. The bottom of the bag doesn't touch the bottom of the can, but it's pretty close. That means you can pretty much use the maximum volume of the bag. Also, the nice tension of the stretched bag hold itself in the place unless you try to throw heavy thing down in there.4) AttractivenessThe finish is beautiful. The can came securely packed in a box. It's a trash can, but you wouldn't mind taking a picture of yourself beside it.5) No moving partsI still like the rectangular shape one with the lid, but the fact that it has moving parts, the lid and the pedal, could mean some issues down the road. Less or no moving part is always better. Again, for us, the purpose is to put recyclables in there. So, open-top design with no moving part works perfect for us.6) Semi-round shapeBecause we place it at the end of our kitchen island, which is a high traffic area, the gentle semi-round shape is more suited because it doesn't get in the way when we walk around the corner. In any case, I just got it today and are happy. I want to thank people who gave me specific information about the product. I'm gland that I chose this product.

I like the look of this item. I have it in my vintage bath, but I feel it could "go" anywhere. I would consider another one for a bedroom if I wanted to spend the money. I do feel that the price is mostly based on the brand name, however. I wish the price were lower. I think it COULD be lower. I have no evidence that this item is hand-crafted or even made in the USA...nothing to warrant the price tag.If you have a "thing" about symmetry like I kinda do, be aware that the top, black plastic section is not symmetrical. One side has about a 1" border, the other has about 2.5" sloped inward. I am not sure why. I think that is unnecessary and just provides a ledge for dust/fuzz to gather. Also, there is a very evident seam from top to bottom on one of the narrow ends.I aim to use the (free) plastic grocery bags as liners. Sometimes they work, sometimes they fall in. My can arrived with a tiny ping where it must have banged against something in shipping, but as it was in the lower corner and this is a bathroom trash can, I wasn't upset about it.My kitten gives it a very good rating, as he decided this was meant as a sleeping-box for him. It's sturdy enough that it didn't tip over while he was using it as a bed, so that's a plus.I don't know if it's the shape of the can itself or of the top, but my Pug has not tried to bury his face in it, either. So that's another plus.It does not fit in that narrow space between my toilet and my wall, but I have an old house, so I knew it fitting was a gamble, no deduction due to that.Reasons for not giving it 5 stars: Expensive for what you get, bag holding system sucks, top is weirdly asymmetrical for no reason, large seam runs down one of the narrow sides, meaning you must place it with that side to the back always, and taking the top off to empty it is awkward and often results in tipping the can or spilling the trash...but that might just be me!

Ok... that much money for something you throw trash in?? My girlfriend has made fun of me for spending this much on a trash can on multiple occasions now. It's worth it. This is a durable, high quality, good looking trash can. It completely hides the bag when the lid is on making it even more attractive. The flat back makes it perfect to put up against the end of a counter or island. It's easy to change the bag and put a new one in. It has some weight to it making it feel more sturdy. It won't easily tip over if someone bumps into it. I like the open top design. Not having to open a lid makes life easier in the kitchen. The bag is well below the top of the lid so that somewhat hides the trash unless you are right up at the can.The outside of the can doesn't seem to hold fingerprints much so it keeps looking good. The only thing I do notice is dust and particles do gather on the lid around the opening a bit. But I just wipe it off on occasion (whenever I clean or change the trash bag).Though it is supposed to take special bags (The P liner), I have been using typical kitchen bags with no issue. The bags don't reach to the very bottom of the can but I have not had the bags come unhooked from the top or anything like that. The can did come with some of the P bags but I haven't tried to use them yet as I already had a huge box of standard kitchen bags. I did look the P bags up and they are only slightly more money compared to your average bag so I will probably switch to those once I use up what I have.I'm very happy with this purchase, even at the original price I paid for it. If you are hesitating because you aren't sure if it's worth it, stop hesitating. It took me months to finally make the plunge on this. I don't regret it.

Worth the extra money - cleans up effortlessly, super easy to use (while the risen lid keeps the trash inside from being too obvious), works with my boyscout-troop-fundraiser trashbags beautifully. The slim design makes it easy to fit wherever it's most needed, and it's tall enough to keep the contents from the curious gazes of my young children. Definitely recommend!*edit*Years of use, still absolutely love this product - have only one small complaint to offer, so I'll post it here in the hopes that simplehuman might take note and come up with a way to tweak the design. The plastic lip that holds the lid onto the can has an upper edge that traps crumbs, but the top of the lid itself is curved,so that when you go to dump these crumbs out, it catches them so you can't dump them out (see photos - one is of debris as it is shaken just clear of the plastic lip it catches in, and the other is of debris resting in the lid's curvature so it can't be dumped out). I have to either take the lid outside and shake it about violently so the crumbs eventually all come out into the yard, go get out the vacuum cleaner and attachment, or use a microfiber cloth and try to wipe it all out a little at a time (tho the shape of the lid makes this approach kinda tedious). Not the biggest deal, obviously, but a little gross and annoying.**2nd edit**Yet more years of use - still love this trashcan. Recently noticed I hadn't had to vacuum/wipe out any crumbs lately - the new factor is a dog: evidently she's been licking the crumbs out of the lid as I go to fetch a new bag! ;D

I have to use a rolling walker, or rollator, to get around. This very much limits the size and placement of things in my home since I need extra room and time to maneuver. Ease of doing things is important. We all know simplehuman makes beautiful trash cans but there are so many that it can be hard to choose which one best suits your needs. I was using an old one from my last home and where it was placed, had to walk around it to reach the opener to open it. Using a walker to move around made this harder and more time-consuming than I liked since I had to maneuver through a small space to get there. My first thought was for my new one to have the opener on the end side of the can facing the kitchen, unlike the present one that has the toeplate opener on the side facing a hall, but then I thought that I could be approaching it from the other side and have the same problem I've been having. This one fits the bill perfectly. The top is open so placing trash in it from any angle is easy, but the opening is not noticeable when you look at the can. It's very sleek and modern looking, like a sculpture, and I just love the way it looks in my stainless kitchen. You get a "10" for this one, simplehuman. I think we all love a functional kitchen that's also beautiful, but you can use this in any room. It's that nice.

Ho. Lee. Cow.I bought two other SimpleHuman trash cans in the past and they both had a lip on the *inside* of the can that absolutely destroyed any bag instead of releasing it. Whatever product guy allowed that out the door should be punched repeatedly. But I digress...Normally I would not reward that kind of failure by purchasing something else from the same maker -- but in this case I am glad I did. Careful research beforehand revealed no lip or other impediment to bag removal, and indeed the product releases the bag like a dream. And it is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. My many children and I were filling up a reasonably large kitchen can at least once a day -- usually more. This behemoth goes for three or four days. Days!It is pricey. But you know that going in. Will it bring you that much joy? I think it will.I bought a box of their special trash bags just to revel in the decadent luxury of a capacious trash receptacle, but when those are gone I'll probably find some regular bags because that's just offensive to think that you somehow need special trash bags. P'shaw!Anyway - if you ever wished a life-size R2-D2 lived in your kitchen to hold a bunch of trash for you, this is the can.

I wasn't certain this trash can was going to be worth the money but I love it! It takes up less space than my old round trash can while having a larger opening for depositing trash. Far less spills on to the can itself and if it does it tends to get on the top which is super easy to clean. I was a little concerned about the bag being visible where the cut out is for the lid handles but I just tuck it up inside and then nothing shows but the can itself. It is also super easy to remove and load the bag. Previously we had to fight with our round can to get the bags out, they would stick and I would have to hold the can while my husband pulled the bag. No problem with that anymore!I know some people have been concerned about smells coming from the open lid design but I have not had that happen. I'm not saying it couldn't but I haven't had it happen. To me the primary source of odor can be old meat wrappers as the blood and scraps rot but we eliminate this problem by putting the meat wrappers in the freezer until the trash goes out. We've always done this and I would do it even if I had a can with a lid, it's just a great way to avoid that foul smell. I highly recommend this can!

My husband was against getting an open garbage can. He wanted a fancy mechanical can. Mostly, he didn't want the trash to stink. I went against his wishes and got this can because I didn't want moving parts that could break, like our last can. A day after using it, he agrees that its much more convenient to throw trash away without having a lid to worry about. He actually said he "loved it," hehe ;) Who would have thought that taking 2 seconds to open a lid would be so annoying. I also think the shape of this can is ideal. Why I love it:1) Slim; hides nicely under a counter or flush against a wall.2) Does not smell.3) Cannot see into trash can easily.4) Easy to change the bag.5) Bag does not fall in.6)So easy to throw trash away with no lid!! (plus no breaking parts)7) Sturdy enough that my 1 year old cannot knock it over or reach inIt comes with some sample bags. However, I actually do not like them. They are white, so they stand out more, and they are smaller than what I like. Because I like to load the trash up to the rim, I get 32 gallon, black bags. The darker bags blend in better in my opinion. Any bag will work well though. We are happy with our purchase.

Yes, surprising that this heading is describing a trash can, but yes it is. This looks and feels like a commercial grade stainless steel trash can, similar to the ones at Starbucks, but with a better shape that works for kitchens. My previous stainless steel trash can with a step pedal was round and always looked awkward next to my island and made a sound every time we opened it and the lid hit the underside of the countertop. This slim design is slightly taller but fits nicely alongside the island and since it's "open" we don't have to hear the lid open, and it's EXTREMELY convenient because it is open. Also, if you are concerned that your trash is visible, the trash is much lower than the top of the lid and the curved design at the top hides the view of trash. Today I noticed that when the bag is completely full, it is still at least 6 inches below the top of the trash can. Also, my 13 gallon kitchen trash bags (from Costco) fit perfectly and snugly and aren't visible from the outside. Much classier than the our last trash can which always showed the trash bag no matter how hard we tried to tuck it in. I normally don't write reviews, but this purchase is worth mentioning.

My husband and I had been dealing (for years!) with an in-cabinet (under the sink) garbage pail. I had been resisting getting a trash can that sat out because of the way it looked. We had no good place to put it in our kitchen so we continued to deal with the in-cabinet can. I saw this and really liked its look. It had great lines and had a modern feel to it. I also read the reviews and actually got a giggle out of one lady who could not stop raving about this can and said she was "actually in love with it". We bought this trash can and I have to say that I, too, am in love with it!!! My husband and I both love it. We've tucked it around the corner in our laundry alcove off the kitchen and it works just great there.Honestly, though, it is so great looking that we would have not had a problem putting it in the open kitchen area if we had a good place for it. Great, great product. Great capacity and easy to pull out and load a new bag. Thank you Simplehuman!!!!

I've purchased many Simple Human products in my house (garbage cans & soap dispensers mostly), and the quality of the products have always been quite good. This can is no exception, however, it should be pointed out that no bags are included, which is highly unusual for SimpleHuman. SimpleHuman Soap dispensers always come with starter soap packs, and other SimpleHuman garbage cans I've purchased always came with a starter pack of garbage bags. When I ordered the garbage can, I added an order of SimpleHuman "R" bags to my monthly Subscribe & Save list, expecting that I'd be fine with the starter stuff until the larger supply arrived. Despite product pictures on Amazon showing the product with garbage bags installed,no bags were included with the product! Now I have a garbage can that I cannot use until my SimpleHuman bags arrive. Disappointing -- this should be clearly disclosed on the product page...

I was desperate for a new kitchen trash can and this one fit all of my wants. I really do not understand why it has to cost so very much. The can itself is not super thick metal, and the one I got doesn't fit all the way into the bottom plastic piece that is detachable for cleaning. I tried pushing and molding it into place, but it just doesn't fit. The can itself still works very well as a trash can and the lid that hides the bag and is easily removed. My kids are able to take care of the kitchen trash with no problems at all. I agree with many other reviewers that for the extreme price of the product it should come with a hard plastic inner lining for easy cleaning. I mean, why charge so much for a trash can when you will continue to make money from the custom bags? A bit of highway robbery if you ask me, but I bought the product having read the other reviews, so I guess I can't complain too much.

I really this 13 gallon brushed stainless steel trash can but for the high price it would have been nice to have received a plastic inner liner that can be removed for cleaning when need be. However, it does not. This trash can did come with a pack of free simplehuman trash bags that fir the can perfectly, but I just use regular 13 gallon trash bags that fit just fine. I do not mind the open lid design because I have this can in an open kitchen but I do make sure that if I have anything "overly stinky" like the packaging that raw meat came in I toss it in a grocery bag and put in the garbage outside. I love space and for that reason, I love how slim this is.I t doesn't take much more room than I would standing up against the wall. I also have a two year old that is tall enough to peek in there but does not mess with it fortunately. It is not flimsy by any means so it stays put.

I have a small kitchen and needed an oval shape trashbin to save space. I don't like the kind with the lid, as this serves as the major wastebin for 3 rooms that intersect (the joys of an open floor plan!) so it saves time to just have an open-topped can. I saw this in The Container Store and was betting I could find it on Amazon for the same price with Prime 2-day free shppg - and there it was! This is VERY heavy and stable. Note dimensions; it is quite tall. Although it comes with a starter supply of bags, I use the Glad or Hefty 13-gallon bags with the drawstring closures. They fit fine on the can (it is very slightly larger than 13 gall). The bag rim shows slightly, over the handles; after fitting the top on,but I consider that a minor price to pay for drawstring convenience.Highly recommended! No assembly needed, just unpack, wipe down, and you're ready to go.

I always liked the garbage cans with a hole in the top, even the big ugly ones in parks. I thought these were a splurge so I waited until my cheap old plastic one broke completely to buy this one. I am extremely pleased even after owning it for a few months. It may be the only classy garbage can on the planet. It's plenty big for kitchen trash and the hole is bigger than I thought. I've never needed to take off the top to fit garbage too big for the hole but you can if needed. If you do get a leak in a bag you can wash the plastic inside bottom. It holds some water between the inside and outside so I had to turn it upside down at a tilt for the day to completely dry it out again, but that's a minor inconvenience. The branded 13 - 16 gallon white liners look great and fit and work well in this can but you just as easily use cheap 30 gallon liners in it, too.
