Granted, this is an almost absurdly expensive price to pay for a trash can, even one that opens automatically, but the quality, function and little "extras" of the Simplehuman actually make it seem worthwhile.First, this is a sturdy, solidly-built, stainless steel, half-round, kitchen-size trashcan that looks good and is at least somewhat fingerprint and, in our house, dog-nose-print, resistant. It is also supposed to have some microbial coating to prevent bacteria growth, though I take all those claims with a grain of salt, since such antibacterial coatings wear out with time, making them of limited value to my mind. This is battery, not AC, powered (4 AAs are included), and the thin lid opens with a wave, which is great when your hands are full or messy, or both. Getting the kids NOT to play Jedi Knight, waving over it all the time, is a whole other prospect. The lid opens relatively slowly, stays open until you walk away, and we found it very reliable. The sensitivity of the sensor increases when open, so it knows if you're still standing there waiting to put more in. I also like that the batteries are installed in an easy to access back panel, so you wouldn't have to lift a full trash can to replace the batteries. One of my favorite parts of this, is one of the smallest niceties, a holder for replacement bags. So convenient to just pull the new bag from the container itself, without having to search under the sink or in the pantry. Very nice touch! And, so far at least, we've had no issues with the clean bags getting fouled by trash, etc. (You fill from the outside) Now, they want you to buy their special (far more expensive) bags that come in a packet that fits directly into the dispenser, and it comes with a small supply (10) of those, but we found standard kitchen-size bags, with the drawstring handles, fit just fine, and are invisible from the outside, just like the Simplehuman bags. (There's an outer ring of the lid that covers the bags when in place.) It is more of a pain to fold them into the in-can dispenser, but it does still work, if you prefer not to purchase

This can instantly replaced the old one in our kitchen, which will now be used for recyclable plastic. We loved it the instant we received it. Unbeknownst to me before its arrival, my wife was hoping that we would get one of these for the kitchen just because of the hands-free opening system. She is a germaphobe and frequently had to put down what she was carrying to the trash in order to lift the lid, then pick up the trash and place it in the old can. She is delighted with the quick-wave over method of lifting the lid!The can comes with batteries ready to install, as well as a limited supply of custom-fitting trash liners. There is an online method included in the instructions (she took them from me right away,so I'm taking her word for it here!) to have the bags automatically re-ordered when you're running low. I have not yet seen the price of the liners. The only thing I don't like about the automatic sensor is that it closes within seconds, and although the directions say that the sensor is calibrated to stay open if the person is still in the process of disposing the trash. Say for example you are peeling an orange; you would have to keep the orange fairly close to the sensor if you were peeling & disposing, and the can is short. For taller people, this isn't going to happen. If I could change anything, it would be to simply adjust a timer that would keep the lid open for a prescribed amount of time. Lastly, I have to say that after reading what I just wrote, I've got to admit that this is the silliest complaint I might have ever written in a review. It is almost laughable, to be honest. But this is how far I've got to go to find a complaint about the actual operation of the can.The can is a very attractive stainless steel, and well made. Changing the batteries was quite simple. All this said, I do think $150 is a bit steep for the price, but I think as I get older, all of my reviews say something to that effect. I would highly recommend this item for your kitchen.

I moved in with my aunt and uncle a few months ago while I was looking to save money while starting a business. They have a 9 year old beagle mix that loves getting into the trash. For the past nine years Amber has managed to trash the house with trash on more occasions then you could count. It was to the point where at night they would either lock Amber up or put the trash can on top of the counter, or put a full gallon paint can on top so she couldn't knock it over. I saw this struggle so for Christmas this past year I decided I was going to find a trash can that would be "Amber Proof"! I did a ton of research and settled on the Simple Human Semi-Round Sensor Can.When I told them I was hoping Amber wouldn't be able to get into the trash they seemed interested but after all the years of not being able to stop her they didn't seem too sold.Well they have had the trash can for a few weeks now and my uncle is already telling everyone that its the best gift they have ever been given. Amber has not gotten into the trash ONCE since I gave it to them. It's a whole new house now, and Amber is no longer getting yelled at (can't say that for her barking at random things in the backyard) but she isn't getting in trouble for always getting into the trash. Our thoughts are that the semi round shape helps from her knocking over the trash can but the biggest part is when she walks near it the lid opens and it scares the crap out of her she runs from it. It works beautiful and looks great, and my aunt has really enjoyed the sensor when cooking and her hands are nasty. So over all its a win win. They got a trash can that save's their sanity, Amber doesn't get yelled at as much (probably missing eating that trash though) and I get to say I bought them the best gift they have ever been given!!

Simply put, this is the best trash can I've ever owned! I have used other automatic waste bins over the past couple of years since that technology has come on the market, but this simplehuman Stainless Steel Semi-Round Sensor Touch-Free Automatic Trash Can with Liner Pocket fixes a lot of the issues I've had with the others. Here are the problems that are solved with this product:1. It has a much larger mouth than most of these contraptions have. The one I have been using next to my cat litter box was always so small that litter would spill outside the can. EWWW! I'm definitely buying another one of these to put there.2. It is so much quieter than the others I have used. Some of those others sound like a Transformer when they open and close making enough noise to the wake up the neighborhood. But not this one. It's quiet as a mouse as it opens up wide and then gently closes.3. The sensor continues to keep the lid open as long as you are close to the top. The others are apparently on a timer to close within a certain amount of time regardless of whether you are still there are not (many times dumping the cat litter it would close right as I was bringing the litter to the trash can--FAIL! But this one remains open until you walk away. LOVE THAT!4. There's a secret compartment in the back that holds your liners for easy access to replace them. None of the others I've used have anything like this.5. A whopping 10-year warranty?! Yep, that's more than my car has.I'm a customer for life now because this is one company that knows how to make a quality product and back it up for the customer to feel confident in what they have purchased. I can't recommend this highly enough and I'm certainly buying more of them.

I was skeptical about spending the money for the simplehuman trash can but am glad I did. It wasn't terribly more expensive from the other less known brands, but it works perfectly as all simplehuman designs do. I've used simplehuman cans before and when not using them, I immediately notice what is missing in the lesser known variants. The can comes very well packaged. A box in a box. The finish is great and leaves no fingerprint marks. The lid is a nice smooth but slightly textured grey plastic that avoids stains and is easy to wipe down. The batteries are in an easy to access compartment at the top back of the unit and the compartment also doubles as a carry handle. No special batteries are needed (I used Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries) and the cover opens and closes without a hassle. The lid opens and closes quickly and very quietly. It is pretty good about false openings, but if you walk too close (within a few inches), it will typically trigger it. The lid stays open long enough to dump stuff in, and if you are standing in front of it, it will remain open. If you need to keep it open even longer, while walking back and forth to the trash can for example, you can simply flip the entire lid open.Flipping the lid open is how you change the bags. No special internal bucket or anything to mess with, just put a standard trash bag in it and drape it over the edges. When you close the lid, the edges are hidden and the bag is secured. Simple and effective. Simplehuman does provide sample simplehuman bags (which are nice), but standard 13 gallon bags work just fine too.All in all, for me, it was worth every penny and I would easily recommend this to anyone looking for a new kitchen trash can.

This trash can is a great addition to my kitchen. It easily senses your hand and quickly raises the lid, allowing you to drop garbage into the can without ever touching the can itself. The lid stays up as long as it senses your presence, which means that if you're scraping out a bowl or dumping coffee grounds, the lid won't close on you. The can itself is very attractive and looks quite classy in my kitchen. The can is 12 gallons which is a great size because most kitchen garbage bags are 13 gallons, and this allows a decent amount of the bag to hang over the sides of the can. The literature that came with the can states that the outside of the can is coated with a "nano-silver clear coat" which is "antimicrobial and fingerprint-proof".Since you don't touch the can to open it, I don't see fingerprints as being too much of a problem, but it can't hurt. The diagram shows the clear coat on the outside of the can, so it isn't clear whether the antimicrobial feature is on both the outside and inside of the can, but hopefully it is on the inside, too.As I mentioned above, it easily senses your hand and opens the lid. However, it may be a bit too sensitive, as it is often triggered just by walking by it. Hopefully this won't affect the battery life too much. It operates off 4 AA batteries (not included). This is a great looking can and makes throwing away kitchen trash more hygienic (think throwing away things that have touched raw chicken without having to touch any surface). It's half-round design makes it fit well against a kitchen wall, and it's no bigger than the traditional tall kitchen trash can. It also comes with a 5 year warranty, which is extraordinary these days.

This bin has been used for about 3 years in between two homes. I can honestly say this is the most expensive bin I've ever purchased, and I don't regret it! Yes, it's expensive, but at the same time it is much more reliable than previous ones. Therefore I think it is worth it.I've had other bins that cost half as much, but they always end up broken. This one is going strong for years, which already made up the cost (had I not buy the others). Usually it is the sensor or the door motor that gets jammed and stops working, rendering it useless for its purpose. The batteries last very long, which means it is not literally 'eating' 4xD batteries every 3 months (and these are not cheap),like some others I've had.In conclusion, it has been working great all this time. Sometimes the sensor can get jammed if you leave your hand in there while it closes, but it recovers quickly. It is smart. We've never had a malfunction.Wipe it with spray and a cloth once in a while, and it is as good as new.The battery compartment is in a convenient location, just behind on top, holding 4xAA batteries. Careful that some bins have the batteries on the door itself, which I found it is not ideal./// Pros \\\* Automatic door* Reliable sensor* Batteries last a long time, from the efficient motor* Readily available bags to purchase with the exact size* Easy to clean* Location of the battery compartment* Aluminium construction/// Cons \\\* Price* Big* Works best with simplehuman bags (but they are perfect to be fair)

Much to my chagrin, the kitchen in my new house requires a free-standing trash can. I thought this one looked stylish and had a lot of practical features, including packages of plastic liners integrated into the back side of the can. They include the first package of liners. They are sturdy and fit the can well. The problem is when you remove the liner bag to empty the trash. The bag inevitably catches on the rigid plastic of the liner dispenser and rips open your bag of trash ? This has happened to me more than once despite care to try and not have the bag ruptured. I've had to put the bag of trash in another plastic bag to get it out of the house. Not very green. Totally unnecessary.Other than ripped open bags of trash, I do like the can. The sensor works great and the hands free feature is both hygienic and practical. I am going to try removing the integrated bag apparatus and it's back to Costco bags for me. Sorry Simplehuman, this "convenience feature" isn't one!Update to my review: I gave the can 4 stars, deducting because the liner dispenser was snagging and tearing the bags (full of trash) upon removal. SimpleHuman reached out to me by way of reply and encouraged me to reach out to their customer support team. I did, and they are sending my a brand new can which hopefully solve my problem. Excellent customer service, so I want to thank Simple Human and commend them on standing behind their product. As I said, I really like the can except for the bag snagging issue.

I have used another version of this type trash can and had some issues with it. This one is far superior (more costly too!). I like the semi-cirlce shape. Fits nicely against the counter. The motor is absolutely very quiet. And the lid does stay OPEN until you walk away. There is a blue light that indicates it will be stay open. If it goes out the lid starts to slowly close. I have had no issues with the lid closing on me prematurely, a constant problem I had with the prior simplhuman can I had/have. By the way, when that blue light turns red, it is telling you the batteries need changing. It uses AA batteries, unlike the other one that used D batteries. This also has a liner storage bin built in.Nice touch instead of storing a bunch at the bottom which is what I would do. Not sure if I can use my liners but will check it out once the included supply of liners (nice touch) runs out.My ONLY real complaint is that the lid does not open usually unless I do hand waves in front of the sensor. The manual/box info says it has a wide sensor range and will get used to my movements.... so far it hasn't. I have to be on top of it and usually have to wave my hand close to it to get it opened. Then again my other one was always opening when any movement near it happened, which was annoying.I like the size of this opening. Makes throwing things in easy, even larger items. The other one I had wasn't that large. All in all I am enjoying this trash can.

I had an older version of the Simplehuman automatic trash can and was not impressed frankly. In fact, it was a disaster as far as I am concerned. However, this version is very impressive. This trashcan is constructed and designed very well and can be described as robust. It has sturdier (thicker) walls and much improved lid and hinge. The hinge is very smooth and quiet on opening and closing unlike many others that are erratic and noisy; clearly a much improved system and design. The material is truly fingerprint resistant in our use. The design of the trashcan is also much improved over many other models. The foot print is average but the can is shaped in a manner that can be placed against a wall. The trash can liner pocket can be used with regular bags, not just the Simpletouch brand and loads from the backside (outside) of the can. The "adaptive sensing" technology really seems to work and the automatic aspect of the can (lid) works flawlessly. The "adaptive sensing" technology prevents 1) "misfires" and 2) the lid from closing while in use. It functioned 100% in this regard. Also, it is very easy to load and hide a garbage bags with the design of the rim. Most automatic trash cans we used in the past relied upon 4 C-size batteries or a power adapter. This version uses 4 AA batteries (included), which is a nice change as they are far more common. You can also use a power adapter (optional) as indicated by Simplehuman. .

A bin is a bin is a bin, right? Wrong.Of course, being a manufacturer of premium household goods, you expect top quality from Simplehuman, and they deliver. Almost every aspect of this bin has been thoughtfully considered. The battery compartment is on the rear of the bin where it won’t get gunky, there is bag storage so you can quickly and easily replace the liner while the lid is up, the opening is large enough that you can scrape plates or what have you into the bin without dropping stuff all over the floor (which is a “duh” design choice but so many manufacturers get it wrong), and the liner sizing is generous enough that I’m not emptying it every 3 days like on my old Brabantia bin.So what do I mean when I say “almost” every aspect has been considered? The sensor. Sometimes I walk near the bin and it opens, other times I am waving frantically over the top and across the front and it will finally register. I’m not sure *how* you rectify and iterate on this for future bins, but it definitely needs a little tweaking. With that said though, don’t let this little niggle put you off, it still works regardless. Price aside, it is a premium bin and you get what you pay for. If you’re a bit of a germaphobe like me, this bin will save your life (I mean, not really, but it’s a nice thing to have.)

I have purchased several automatic garbage cans in the past and I will say this is the best of all of them by far. That said, this is also the most expensive by a good bit. If you don't mind the price, this is the best of the bunch. When it says "whisper quiet," it truly is. It is the quietest I've ever used. It closes so gently - the lid does not slam down as with other brands. You hardly hear anything. I love that it uses double A batteries as well -- and they are provided in the box. The battery box is conveniently located and it's a breeze to open it and install them. Another feature this one has is a bag storage holder. You can just pull out another bag from inside the can. They sell their brand of bags but I won't purchase those. I'll just use your average kitchen bag. This is a very good looking and functional can with exceptional quality. The only reason I take off a star is the price. Because it is a better can, it is justified in having a higher price. I'm just not sure this much higher. The can itself is fantastic and if you've never had an automatic can before, you will love it. No one has to see or smell the gross garbage. Great product!

Can I call a trash can state of the art?Tuck 4 AA batteries into the compartment on the back. Put in a liner and pull down the rim cover to keep it in place. That idea alone is so smart that it puts the trash can in a class of its own.Now wave your hand over the cover. The lid opens smoothly and silently, gives you time to drop your coffee grounds in, and then slowly and silently closes again. There's some serious tech behind the performance. Silver has antimicrobial products, and nanoparticles of silver are often suspended in paint in hospitals to take advantage of this. The coating of this trash can uses the same technology to keep the outer surface clean. The sensor that tells the lid when to open is adaptive -- at first it reacts to everything (be persistent about getting it to close after you put the liner in), but over time it learns about the environment in your particular home or shop and responds appropriately. So everything you don't like about your current trash can -- slipping liners, smells, or just the need to hide it -- will be a thing of the past. I'm betting this will be the last trash can you'll ever need to buy.

First off, I love this trash can! When I bought it I felt a little guilty for the amount I spent on it, but it has been worth every penny. I've had it a little over a month now and have it as my main trash can in the kitchen. It has no fingerprints on it yet (even from my 3 1/2 year old). The bags dispense frome the trash can when you change the bag. It's so convenient and saves on cupboard space. Also, it has holes in the bottom of the can to ensure no suction when pulling the bag out. It came with the simple human bags, which I have never tried before and they are also wonderful! Fit the can just right. You don't see the bag sticking out from under the lid. And the bags are very sturdy. They even have a rage on them to let you know when you're low on bags! The only con I can say about the can is that if you Wally too close to the can the lid will open. I've noticed it's not so much in front of the can as if you walk super close and your arm or shadow happens to go over top of the can. Once I figured that out it has been easy to avoid. In short, I love this trash can and you will too if you get one!

the way the bag folds over the top edge means the inside of the bin will never see waste so you will only be cleaning the outside. when you close the lid this then clamps (in a way) the bag in place. Your asked to rate a Lock feature and i gave it one star, it doesn't have a lock feature !The bags a expensive but makes using the bin a better experience, we have all sampled lots of bags to save money but never fit well. these go in quickly and pull out perfectly, they are strong and you pull the strings and you have a closed bag to drop in the wheely bin.We had another make 40l bin and this is a 45l but we can fit more in this by quite a way, probably a couple of days more. This is because it is wider and things go in well, the other bin was a touch taller but much narrower and as a result thing ended up being jammed in which in turn makes it harder to pull the bag out. ( and then cheap bags split)The sensor works well and it wasn't the reason we bought it, it was the size. however we are not sure how long it will be before the dogs figure it out.....they are watching carefully at the moment.
