I finished Shadow Hearts Covenant last night and really enjoyed the game. Total playing time for me was 58 hours, and I only did a portion of possible sidequests. In the Shadow Hearts series, I have now played Koudelka (the PS1 prequel to SH), Shadow Hearts, and Shadow Hearts Covenant. Each of the three games is 4 or 5 stars for me, I recommend them all fully. I think with each successive game, the gameplay, combat system, and graphics got better. Also, with each successive game, the overall theme got a little less dark (although I prefer darker, personally). Koudelka was a brilliant, very dark-themed horror survival game with RPG elements that was slowed only by a slow combat system and somewhat blocky graphics.Shadow Hearts was dark-themed, but less so than Koudelka, with vast improvements in look, feel, combat system and overall gameplay. Shadow Hearts Covenant is closer to Shadow Hearts, but less dark-themed still, with further improved gameplay.Shadow Hearts Covenant was a great game, 4.5 stars for me.Strengths:- The Judgement Ring system for turn-based combat is a lot of fun, and is even a little better and deeper here than in Shadow Hearts; combines strategy of the best turn-based RPGs with timing/skill- Great story, with multiple flashbacks and tie-ins to SH and similarly spectacular plots and ending(s) that will leave you both satisfied and thinking- Yuri and Karin are some of the best, most memorable characters I've ever played. Gepetto, Joachim, and the others were very good.- Very enjoyable game throughoutQuirks and oddities:- Some crazy humor and nutty NPCs- Similar (and in some cases the same) weird monsters as SH and KoudelkaMinor Weaknesses:- some unnecessary dialogue with the Ring Soul- Yuri's Graveyard area was good, but I liked the Graveyard gameplay in SH better- less dark than SH or Koudelka (personal preference)Shadow Hearts Covenant is a polished, excellent RPG that really takes advantage of the Judgement Ring System, which is a brilliant gameplay system. It has some of the same origin and a little of the darker flavor of its predecessors, but it is less dark overall.

First of all, this game is part of a PS1 series called Koudelka (think I spelled that right.) and the sequel to shadow hearts 1. I never played Koudelka, but have completed SH1 and SH2 many times, I purchased this to run headlong down memory lane.So Shadow Hearts: covenant takes place in an alternate fantasy history WW1 era Paris, it follow main characters Yuri, and Karin, the story focuses more on Yuri than anything, but it tries to place Karin (Box Art) as the lead, and it is a wild ride! There are a few references to SH1, but most of them are either fairly innocuous or explain themselves fairly quickly. It sets itself up like a JRPG, as you build a team of unique characters who each fill a specific role, streangths, weaknesses, etc. It is comepletely turn based, and gear centric, but it uses a unique game mechanic called the, "Ring of Fate." (I think) which really turns the genre on its head and is what makes this game such a joy to play. Once you select your action this ring comes up on screen and you have to hit X in certain segments to determine if you crit, how often you hit, if there are bonuses, etc. So you dont just select attack and the game takes over, there is an active mechanic to it as well. The graphics have not aged too well, with facial animations looking the most jarring, lips not moving, held objects floating awkwardly, and eyes... just being a bit much. Scenery is pretty good for PS2 era, with the kindof washed out static background and the stylized foreground. The voice acting makes me think of a mid 90's anime, english dub, in the vein of Yu Yu Hokasho, or similar games of that time (Think Final Fantasy X) Which I have always loved the style so to me it holds up well.tldr; The graphics have certainly aged poorly, the voice acting has aged well, the story still holds up, as do the characters. The voice acting, music, and unique combat styles are still a wonder to behold.

I been playing shadow hearts covenant since 2004 im still hooked on this masterpiece shadow hearts covenant has a deep emotionally driven story about how true love and friendship can blur the lines between life and death the main protagnitist is Yuri hyuga a Japanese Russian harmonixer with a rude personality but deep down a kind hearted hero this game takes place during the beginning of ww1 a somewhat gothic macabre game throughout Yuri meets some interesting characters who he befriends very colorful dialogue and conversations between Yuri and his friends and traveling companions and of course his enemies shadow hearts covenant has so many positive points going for it I find the mazes to beunneededly frustrating and the inconvenient battles when you are lost other than those 2 cons shadow hearts covenant is an excellent game to show how unique and special the ps2 really is its not the only great rpg for the ps2 but one of top rpg games ever I am disheartened no one has made another shadow hearts game after from the newworld also that xseed games never commissioned a shadow hearts hd remake I believe in my opinion that would be a collection worth owning I would happily buy whether it be for ps3 or ps4

"Shadow Hearts: Covenant" is an RPG that is turn based. However, the "Ring of Judgment" a spinning reel that requires coordination to operate, adds a real-time element to battle.Despite the name, the game's music and characters are not as dark as I thought they would be. Also, Midway being the makers of Mortal Kombat, I was suspecting a slightly different ambiance. However, I'm glad they did the game the way they did.As usual in an RPG, you throw together a crew of unusual people (everything from a German Kaiser soldier to a professional wrestling vampire) and they go on a journey to prevent chaos from ensuing upon the earth. You must strengthen the characters with equipment, skills, and leveling up.The heroes chase a sequence of monsters throughout early 20th century Europe. The game has some enjoyable comic moments, which is not as common in RPGs as with some other types of games.I would recommend this game.

Shadow Hearts was my favourite game, until SH2 came out.I've made it all the way to the ending CGI movie. I've only done it once, so I'm not sure if they have different endings.A Game guide is really a must. There is no way to figure out all the secret locations by straight game play.I miss the moxicombustion guy. Margherite came back in a cameo appearance. The graphics are much better, but I wish Yuri didn't have the fanny pack. And the History is still in the story line, but I wouldn't vouch for historical accuracy.Of the new characters Joachim is the funniest (Grand Papillon). I made it all the way through the 'Man Festival'. not politcally correct, but who cares? I love this game, cause it goes where other games won't go.If you're reading this, chances are you're already a fan of Shadow Hearts. It rocks! I hope there is another sequel.

Shadow Hearts Covenant is the definition a Great RPG game. It has a powerful storyline, interesting characters, beautiful cutscenes even for a PS2 game along with the graphics. Considering that this game came out 10 years ago. It defines the word Fun! A gamer such as myself, I perfer these turn based type of RPGS, similar like FFX. Yes it has random battles but the story, characters, music, and turned based battles makes up for it. Long game, so much to do and explore. Shadow Hearts 2 has surpassed the 1st one in so many ways. It still has that gothic feeling in this one, the 1st one had more of that horror gothic feeling. Both games are fun and enjoyable. One of the Rare type of Rpg Games, like Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. A Golden Age of RPGS!!!

This game is amazing for a RPG game that was released in 2004. The characters are detailed well and the story is very good. Trying to find or get some of the important items or equipment in the game did take some time but it was indeed fun taking the time to find them whether it be from a dungeon or cave. Overall, this game had good graphics, the story was very interesting and fun, and the game scenes were one of the best from any game I have seen or played.Pros-Gameplay (Storyline)Unique CharactersGraphicsMusic SoundtrackJudgment RingCombos with TeammatesLots of SidequestsCons-Long Dungeons

I was shown this game by a friend of mine after it was already pulled off the shelves. I first played its pedecessor Shadow Hearts, and I liked that, it wasnt great but it was likeable. Bu this game I believe is the best in the series. the gameplay is fun, the story is quirky and I found all of the characters likeable. I would say that anyone who likes games like final fantasy X, or the tales series will probably like this game.

I purchased this game on a whim. I played for the shadow hearts and enjoyed it.Pro- game is turn based with attack depending on accurate strike to a turning ring- story is new, different, and interesting to follow- character voices portray character well- cut scenes are solid but nothing similar to a PS3 RPG graphicsCon- non

A unique fighting system oddly not copied by any other competitor. The system keeps you on your feet and give a real sense of control. The visuals for the magic spells can be quite beautiful as well and the writing for this game is bizarro but that just adds to the experience with its unforgettable characters.

5.4.2019

Everything about this game is fabulous! The story, the gameplay, a series of unforgetable characters. Even ascetically, it manages to be beautiful as a ps2 game in the ps4 age. The only issue, the ending is really bad. The ending made the game go from an A+ to just a solid A in my opinion.

16.5.2014

This game is engaging, funny, and challenging but not to the point where it's difficult. I love the story, I feel for the characters (the ring soul is my favorite), and I like the judgement ring. A MUST OWN game for PS2. I would daresay this rivals final fantasy 10.

11.12.2012

I am a big fan of this game! I never got to play the first one before it, but I became a fan due to this one!! I love the story line and all the costumes! They are quite interesting!! Thanks so much!
