A real blast from the past at last! From the studio that brought us classic games such as Duke Nuke 3D, Serious Sam and…Wacky Wheels (does anybody remember that?), comes the first modern FPS game that truly delivers that frantic fast action gameplay of the mid 90’s. This feels like the game that Duke Nukem Forever wanted to be.The story begins with our protagonist, Lo Wang (pun intended) on his way to meet a crime lord for the purpose of buying a legendary sword. This meeting however go sour very fast and within moments you are under attack from Katana wielding henchmen. Wang whips out his own Katana and so begins Shadow Warrior. The game really does start that fast.Within five minutes of the opening video (which can be skipped) you are straight into the action. No overly long video or boring chats with your teams mates just fast paced action. This never really lets up which at times can become a little too much for example when one type on Demon appears and keeps spawning monsters till you kill him. The weapons range from pistols and Shotguns to the stranger ones like a Demon Heart and Demon Head. The controls work pretty well with all the standard buttons layouts seen in other FPS games. The aiming however does feel a little stiff compared to the likes of COD for example. One part of the controls I’m not a fan of however is the Ki/katana combo layouts. As you progress through the game, you learn new skills and sword moves that require the player to input a combo for it to work. The combos are very simple and require little more than taping the joystick twice in the same direction and press either the left trigger or right. I found sometimes that in the heat of battle, the healing spell (tap left joystick twice to the right and hold left trigger.) doesn’t work as you find yourself having to run away from the enemies which is a problem when the same joystick is used for both moving and spell casting. I also have the same problem with the Katana spell which is double tap forward which edges you close to the enemy when you want to move away. I feel this could have been fixed by using the top left button (which is not used in this game) and maybe bringing up a spell wheel much like how the weapon selecting is done. The graphics are a mix of both brilliant and also quite poor. The Japanese themed temples and locations are amazing and really do give the player the feeling that they are in Japan. The first level for example is one of the best looking. However the backgrounds do look flat at times something more suited to a late Xbox 360 game then an Xbox one game. The Demons look good and offer a decent variety but again the humans are the opposite. They look last gen in every way and really seem out of place. Lucky however there are very few humans to take on in this game and demons make up about 90% of you enemies.Sound is also a good factor in this game. The weapons sound like they should but the music is the standout thing about the sound. The game has a good strong soundtrack that ups the tempo when under attack and claims when not. It all has that traditional Asian style of music. Lo Wang does keep up the funny comments and references to classic films and such making him a little more ‘human’ then most other FPS game.Overall, the game does have that ‘budget’ feel to it but it really is the closest thing to the classic shooters that many are yearning for today. If you liked the classics like Duke 3D and DooM, then the chances are you’ll love this. Its fast, gruesome fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously

A mix of Serious Sam and Doom with a sword thrown in.We have an unusual situation where a game has come out on PC first, the next gen consoles are supposedly due to get this gem later on this year. For now though, I urge all PC FPS fans to grab a copy. Looking at a few 'professional' reviews, the consensus seems to be that it's a mediocre game but then you read the comments and people as a whole disagree - me too!It is old school FPS - it even uses F5/F8!!! A little repetitive if you play for long periods but if like me, you want a quick hour of game, it's perfect. Wonder around with sword in hand, chopping off limbs or just beheading hoards of demons.Sometimes you need to break out the occasional gun or crossbow but it's not quite as much fun. There's elements of puzzle, requiring hunting for a key (hence the reference to Doom). Quite a bit of pure comedy gold from a ghost that follows you around. So far the story is actually worth following. Graphics are stunning and atmospheric (if your machine has got the minerals). My number one hate for the game is the 'power' moves. It doesn't work on a keyboard/mouse setup. Basically, we are given key combinations in order to complete special moves. Trying to do them in the heat of battle is no fun. I could plug in a controller (if it supports one?) but then I would lose the ability to quick and accurate with every other aspect of the game. Damned if you do...Played for 3 hours before reviewing.

Shadow Warrior is a single player first-person shooter where players take control of the modern ninja mercenary Lo Wang from a first-person perspective as he fights through levels of demonic hordes, there are 17 massively impressive levels that are really great to look at and are well designed with plenty of lush scenery and all with plentiful hidden areas full of secrets to find as well as the main story, Wang is equipped with various firearms that require ammunition that can be found throughout stages quite frequently. Firearms range from fictional versions of pistols, submachine guns, shotguns and rocket launchers, some of which can be dual-wielded, all dish out various great devastation depending on the enemy, the best of course being the Sword which is the most exciting part about the game as you hack and slash slice through enemies, always brutal and bloody gory effects too as you do, all the weapons get better throughout the game as you progress in levelling them up with add-ons, shurikens can also be used as a secondary backup weapon. Enemies themselves vary in strength, size and attack pattern, the game is so much fun and looks fantastic all round, I certainly recommend this to anyone who loves a long campaign with plenty of action, plenty to kill and plenty of time on the side finding hidden areas full of secrets, the game has a wonderful sense of humour too, A must for owners of X-box one and PS4.

Shadow Warrior is an 80's comedy of sorts; sure, it's based around demons and eviscerating people with a katana but it's actually very funny at multiple points. You are Wang - the ninja lackey employed by Zilla to obtain a fabled sword. The deal quickly goes south as the seller is rudely dismembered by interdimensional demons also after the sword and Wang has to fight his way out with the help of his newly acquainted ghost friend. The ghost friend cracks wise the entire time and even Wang has a fair few one liners to interject (after one especially heavy firefight Wang quips "I guess I was just too much Wang for them") and fortune cookies provide you with such wisdom as "A Wang in the hand is worth two in the bush"...There are upgrades based on tattoos on your body, allowing you to learn new katana skills and healing skills. The money you collect can be spent on upgrading your weaponry - pistols, SMGs etc. All the while it's set in a beautiful - if a little graphically dated - Japanese scenery, replete with monasteries, dojos, cherry blossom and koi ponds. It's fun and kept me chuckling despite the hyper-violence (blood and dismemberment) but it's ultimately a little bit repetitive. Despite this, it's well worth a look for this price. Recommended.

As with Flying Wild Hog’s previous title, Hard Reset (great, 4/5) SHADOW WARRIOR is a whole lot of riotous fun. Like it’s predecessor, it’s an old-school shooter, but with SW we get the added fun of melee combat. And that’s basically what SW is all about: katana mayhem. It also shares much of the mechanics and gameplay tropes of the earlier game, and that’s all to the good as well. It differs from Hard Reset in some areas, however, most notably with the variety of weapons and the more conventional upgrade system and skills tree. There’s also a stronger story, although it is a tad incoherent at times. There are some very cool cutscenes, but they’re used sparsely and never intrude but do help to flesh out the story. And there’s also plenty of amusing, deliberately cheesy, dialogue to enjoy. Graphically, SW is one of the most stunning games I’ve come across, and it also delivers some impressive physics. It’s not open world, as is de rigueur these days, but its linearity keeps the story, and the game progression, on the rails and never detracts from the fun. Hugely enjoyable and highly recommended.

Not half as crude as I thought it might be. The mixture of bloody hack/slash/shoot and gory monsters, eastern lore mixed with modern weapons and greed, a certain kind of humor and integrity by the games hero and his sidekick, is surprisingly charming. It also is very addictive because of the uncomplicated mechanics and the brilliant soundtrack. Secrets to be found, artifacts to collect and above all no frustrating boss fights. It can get quite challenging at times, but the protagonist leveled up to your requirements will have a fighting chance against the odds. Oh, and not once bugged the game out on me! It also has a decent length to it. I wish they would do more of these kind of games. Not really my first choice of games, but I enjoyed it enough to replay it straight away. Watch a little game play on YouTube and decide for yourself.

So much Wang everywhere in this game - there's Wang in the bamboo, Wang in the city, Wang in the docks, Wang in the mountains...nearly too much Wang for me to handle, although you might fare better depending on how much Wang you can take. I've had my fill of Wang for now, but maybe you can take more Wang than me - everyone's different. I'd still recommend this game if you're not into Wang, because everyone needs some Wang in their life at some point.Above all though, don't mess with the Wang.

If there ever was any doubt that gaming is an art-form, this game shreds it to pieces. The game offers traditional Japanese settings (from the temples and the castles to the mythology and the paintings), rich late 80's environments (from shipyards and inner courtyards to caves and snowy mountains) and a great collection of interesting guns. It may be only 9 in total yet I got more excited when I got the shotgun or the rocket launcher than I ever was finding any one of the bazzilion guns in

A slash fest of the highest order. Be prepared to die many, many times and if you don't look on line for a guide to the secrets, you will miss most of them. I gave up at Chapter 8. My wrist and thumb were hurting from pressing the slash/shoot/bash keys so dammed often. I'm not complaining, it's just that the games have moved on from this and so have I. Good fun while it lasted though.

Storywise, the game's plot is actually okay, but the great gameplay is the thing that stands out the most. It's such fun to chop off almost any part of your enemies bodies, then end them with a bullet.I'd highly recommended this game to people who love a gory fps that includes a challenge. Also fast delivery, and the quality was great ?

I never played the original game back in the day. I saw some screen shots of the remake and decided to give it a go, the game has 17 decent length chapters, I was expecting this game to be short.. But I was very wrong. Out if 6 other xbox one games I own this one is my fav up to now.

18.5.2016

This game is a must buy for xbox one!! Really shows the graphical difference from previous eras, the game itself should eventually ve considered as an xbox classic in years to come, the perfect combination of FPS & Shaolins, has got similar elements to Dishonoured game!!

3.7.2017

Great game for the price. Just mindless shooting which is sometimes appreciated in this day and age. Nice nod back to the 90's. And sometimes I couldn't stop laughing, loads of chuckles here and there. It's not perfect but for around a fiver. You'll be happily surprised.

24.6.2015

This is a solid arcade style shooter which is alot of fun, although slightly shallow and repetitive after a while. Graphically it's quite poor, however with the fast paced gameplay you don't really notice after a while. Good old fashioned fun.

18.10.2013

Story evolves nicely with an interesting ending.Best meat grind shooter ever. Really the best mix of old school fps and modern game design.I recommend this to anyone who liked the original Shadow Warrior or Duke Nukem games.
