Ok so it's a toss-up WD reds or these. I have both in different places, and so far no problems with either (where's some wood, come on, come on, I need to touch some now). Or there is also the Tosh N300 series - slightly cheaper. I haven't tried them yet.As a product made in millions all HDDs like this are going to be pretty much of a muchness I think, so one review isn't going to influence your decision much I suspect. So why write one? Well I wanted to question/dispel a few concerns in other reviews on here.Firstly the big one - the packing of these non retail boxed drives from Amazon was probably as good as it gets - well done someone. The boxes are marked as 'Seagate approved packaging'- not a retail box but solid and foam-filled. This box had drive model and serials printed on it. So as far as I can tell it originates in the factory. So no more scare stories about bare drives in bags (although I have experienced this myself too - years ago).Secondly, these are very quiet. I've just thrashed a raided pair for about 24 hours solid copying across a fairly slow NAS and didn't notice noise or any excess temperature issues. They have running in total for about a week, so early time yes I admit, but waiting till I had a few years on them would hardly help you as the design would have changed by them no doubt. I'll come back and update if anything untoward happens.Want more storage - don't we all - I should say buy with confidence.

Rating a product intended for long term use makes little sense but years on it will be too late.I have given the rating of 4 stars overall because there is a dearth of information about partitioning these large drives. Thankfully Rod Smith of RodsBooks was kind enough to give detailed information and a lot of his time to solve my problem.Basically, the problem was how to set up partitions that where the partition boundary aligned with a physical sector boundary. Easy if you use Rod's gdisk software and read his work on partitions. Easily found on google. The problem arises because the physical sector size is 4096bytes but the logical sector size is 512 bytes. So to align the partition needs to start on a sector whose number is exactly divisible by 8. Rod's software suggests a default start of sector 2048 for the first partition and each subsequent partition needs to start on a sector whose number is exactly divisible by eight. Mercifully, gdisk offers a default start sector for second and subsequent partitions. So why do I dock a star - because trying to find this simple information was hard and could be resolved by giving it with the disk or making it easy to find on the Seagate site.

I got 6 of the 8 GB versions. I avoided the 10GB becasue it has had historical issues with write caching (perhaps fixed now by firmware update) plu cost per TB was best with the 8GB models. Anyway, back to the review - all 6 seemed to work as expected - they are quiet and fast (for spinners) although one or two seem to get a little warmer than others - possibly because of differing airflows. With a striped mirror (RAID0+1) I get around 700MB/s read and around 450MB/s write real-life use- not too shabby at all. Random speeds drop off a lot obviously. The RAID gives me something like 0.75 GB of write cache (6 disks / 2 * 256MB Cache)which is not to be sniffed at and will significantly improve small random writes.Great disk so far but asks me again in 3 or 4 years if I'm still happy.

I bought two of these drives to repair and expand my Synology DS215J, where one drive had become degraded. Installation was simple - remove dud small drive, insert new big one, allow it to repair - then repeat, replacing the second small drive. The *only* hiccup was the packaging. The drives came packed in sealed anti-static bags (yay!) but they were packaged together in a regular-sized 25x9x16 hinge-lid cardboard box that was probabably only designed to take one drive. There was foam wadding to protect the drives, but the box was bulging at the seams and was only sealed with a few strips of regular parcel tape over the lid closure. I should emphasise that despite this, they arrived in good working condition - but I expected a little more protection for just shy of £500 of technology.

I used to put a mix of random consumer drives in my NAS, and was continually dealing with a few drive deaths a year, then I switched over to Ironwolf drives and haven't touched them since. Just needed one more 10TB to max out my Synology hybrid raid. Highly recommended, very reliable for long term use.

First arrived with damaged actuators, made a lot of clicking a soon as I plugged it in. Sent it back same day and received a replacement two days later. The new one makes next to no noise and read/write transfer between two of them levels out around 180MB/s, but can surge above 200 at times.

Bought 6 of them for my QNAP NAS enclosure. One of drives was Death On Arrival, Amazon packaging problem. Drives are working well, no problems at all after around 6 mounths of using. They are much quaieter from my HGST 4tb drives I used before, also less vibration.

Drive arrived in a well packaged box with alot of padding, sadly the drive was dead and was making a loud screeching sound when it was connected. Luckily it was fully refunded and ordered a new one which worked on arrival.

I got this HDD for my 2-bay NAS, RAID 1. I have no issue with them, 24/7. The product package was not good - plastics and thin cardboard boxes, very cheap feel ... anyway, the hard drives were fine when delivered.

Good value, reliable and reasonably quiet drive. Runs VERY hot though - needs good airflow. Apparently, 10TB and up are cooler as they're filled with argon rather than air. Shame I bought the 8TB version :/

Has good steady speed but is in the high speed test this was set as a Windows storage space in simple mode with 2 harddrives for games has decreased load times however was a pain that Windows didn't like it

The ironwolf series had always treated my well with my previous drives i have. Ended up taking a leap and went with 8TB of storage capacity for a external hard drive. Consistent speeds and very simple.

You can't go wrong with seagate hdd's, I've never had a problem and not had one fail on me, they are solid and value for money. This one I have in my home server nas and works great.

Great drive. I trust Seagate a lot more than western digital, had 2 of their drives fail just after warantee ran out. Seagate seem to go forever. Recommend this

A good reliable drive but I feel it's still a bit pricey when you compare it to the 8TB drives available, once it's formatted you don't actually get the 10TB.
