The SmartThings HubAfter I eventually managed to get the hub working properly I got this sorted reasonably fast. The speed at which it senses disengagement is impressive. I have it setup via IFTTT to trigger the outside Hue light. Generally within a couple of seconds of opening the door the outside light will come on. I do however need to change this and use Stringify to only put the light on if the sensor triggers after sunset. No point wasting energy if it's daylight. Installing new accessories is a chore, the app crashes or it sits "verifying" the accessory for far too long, you'll find that your item has stopped blinking and not much has happened,it's still verifying but what has actually happened is that the accessory has actually been installed. Very frustrating for a hub that costs so much, feels untested at times.Window / Door Open / Close SensorThe ability to have this tell me if the door gets opened if I'm away is what I want too. Need to see if the SmartThings app will do this, but I only want it to alert me if mine and my wifes phones are not near home (i.e. away from home and we're being burgled). Smart Home tech is great but having routines as these as standard would make them far more valuable. There seems to be so much disconnect from developers once they made something and not engaging the consumer with a truly decent use once it's released. Overall well built and the sticky suff on the back by 3M is very sticky.Moisture SensorActivates really fast, sat this on a little damp patch on work surfaces and within a second I received my notification, moved it from the damp spot and the update came back telling me all was well. Interesting to have a temperature sensor built in which I hope to utilise for a widget going forwards. Now located in the bathroom behind the sink and next to the bath, considering getting a second one to go under the kitchen sink in case the U bend leaks.ButtonGreat to have the ability to Single Press, Double Press and Hold to do different things, however it'd be good to utilise other smart home devices, for instance I have this in my hall way to switch my hall on by press, off by double press and wanted to switch the front floodlight on which belongs to a smart camera that SmartThings doesn't work with...Motion SensorWorks fast, have this in my dining room to switch my Hue bulbs on, also have it set to turn off after two minutes if no more motion is detected. Seems to work faster than the Hue variant I have at the top of the stairs. Also great the fact you don't have to drill the wall to mount it, simply use the included 3M tape and stick it to the wall.

It's been a while since I last tried some of these sensors, having had some of the original SmartThings set. With a new hub now comes new sensors which I set up to try out and see what's new for motion and multipurpose editions. The set up itself is relatively straightforward for new items connecting to a new hub - either pull the tab and wait for it to appear or scan the barcode on the back to add it into the app. A larger and more prominent LED than previous versions make it easier to connect while a slightly more solid build quality also helps out too. Once added you can add them to be part of an automation - a process that is simple from within the app and relatively flexible, though more complex automations are not possible. The motion sensor has added a couple of things - a wider range of motion and a flexible angle which uses a magnet. This makes it both more reliable and easier to fit in a range of locations. There's also a temperature sensor built in so both can be used for automations - though don't expect to be able to do anything that is for example no motion for a period of time, this just doesn't seem possible in app.The multi purpose sensor has three different sensors built in - temperature, open/close and vibration - allow which can be used for automation. The build quality has improved since the previous version and it's also become more streamlined so I can fit it onto a door for both open close and knocking to be detected. The separate magnet can also be put some distance away so would be good for tricky door frames. The button is smaller than the other sensors, with a magnet on the back for easy mounting and just a single button on the front. This feels well built and provides decent feedback and a near immediate result when pressed. The moisture sensor is larger than the others, with two small metal probes on top. Once water collects in the very shallow tray this will prompt the sensor to trigger. This one also has a different battery to some of the others, though you would hope it is triggered less frequently too.Overall therefore this seems a reasonable upgrade to what is a flexible set of sensors. The automation opportunities are decent enough, and the build quality good - so it comes recommended from me.

Despite the negative press about the security risks which exist with smart home technology, the adoption rates seem to continue to rise. From my own perspective, I'm generally not hugely concerned about the security risks (although I have not installed indoor cameras, partly for this reason) and so I have continued to do likewise, having so far become a full convert to Philips Hue and the Google Nest thermostats.Over the years, I have also built up an impressive collection of smart plugs, beginning with a series of Kasa TP-Link smart plugs (both with and without energy monitoring), before transitioning to Philips Hue plugs (released late 2019) and now I have the opportunity to try out a Samsung SmartThings smart plug.Design wise, the Samsung smart plug is very similar to the Philips Hue version with both being roughly similar in size and each of them having the manual override power button on the top. I also found it as easy to set up as the Philips Hue (the Kasa TP-link smart plugs require much more input to set up and much be done individually) as, provided you have the SmartThings hub (an essential piece of kit to ensure that plug will work), it is simply a matter of following the small number of steps in the SmartThings app to connect it to the system. One advantage I found to the Samsung smart plug over the Philips Hue version was the app itself, as it is much more flexible in terms of its approach to automation i.e. turn something on at a particular time, or turn something off when I leave home etc. On the Philips Hue app, the most straightforward approach is to set up individual rooms and then add devices to those rooms (as with the Samsung SmartThings app). However, when automating, Philips Hue tends to restrict you to automating rooms rather than individual devices and accordingly, the rule has to be set up that either all the devices turn on, or none of them do.Given that the Samsung SmartThings app seems to offer more flexibility, I think I might be purchasing more of these plugs and experiment further with transitioning all my current devices to the SmartThings app (which can be done, because they all use the ZigBee protocol).

I have bought several SmartThings Motion Sensors (2018 version) and they work reliably and perform well.I have these installed within a few rooms around my house and primarily use them to control lights when someone enters/leaves the room. When positioned well they can detect motion instantly from the other side of the room without any problems. I would say that it probably takes about a second for my lights to come on when I walk in the room. Battery life seems to be good also. I have a few other branded Zigbee motion sensors and the Samsung 2018 sensors seem more responsive than all the others I have.I also do like the magnetic base design which can be placed anywhere and the sensor can be easily moved in any direction. As with all the Smarthings sensors, they are also easy to connect to the hub. They also do measure temperature but I don't have any automations setup based on temperature so I have not really used this feature.Tip: I wanted my lights to switch off as quickly as possible after I have left a room, however I have these motion sensors in rooms such as my office or living room where I may sit down and not move much therefore the sensors would turn lights off after a short time because no movement was being detected; this was somewhat annoying when actually still in the room. To get around this, I have configured my automations to not turn the light off only when the sensor detects no motion in the room I am occupying, but also when motion IS detected from another sensor in an adjacent room! When I leave a room, I have to go past other sensors everytime so I now have automations configured so that when motion is no longer detected in the room I have been in, it also checks if motion being detected in the adjacent hall ways, only then will it turn the office/living room lights off. This seems to work well even if you leave the room and are then only in the adjacent hall way for a brief moment. You're welcome!Overally, great sensors, highly recommended.

********* Multipurpose Contact Sensor ************This is a great device and it makes a great addition to the Samsung Smart Things Hub (3rd gen).It has a really clean design and looks great on any door or window. It consists of the contact sensor, a vibration sensor and a temperature sensor - all in one small device. All features that can be taken advantage of with the automation tab in the Smart Things App.The sensor is extremely easy to install, with it's pre installed double-sided tape. And adheres well to most surfaces.I am very pleasantly surprised at how well the vibration sensor works (just ensure you stick the main part of the sensor to the door since this is the vibration part of the sensor).I can now receive custom alerts on my phone when ever someone opens my door or knocks my door.********* Motion Sensor ************The motion sensor is indeed very similar to the multi purpose contact sensor in what it can do. The only difference is in stead of it monitoring for something been opened / closed it monitors for motion. It's just as easy to install and looks great. It consists of a motion sensor and temperature sensor (Note the motion sensor does not have a vibration sensor). All the featured of the motion sensor can also be take advantage of using the automation section of the Smart Things application.*My motion sensor did look as if it had already been opened, but it still works fine. I hope this is just a one off experience.

I bought this for the garage for a couple of reasons...The first is for security so that Smartthings can alert me if it detects the garage door opening. The second is an added bonus - temperature detection and safety. I weld in my garage and always have a cleardown and fire check before I finish, however it always worries me that there may be something smouldering when I lock the garage door. I've set Smartthings to alert me if this device reads more than 30C (unlikely in normal use, in Scotland!).Now, I know this isn't the same as having a genuine smoke detector in the garage but it might alert me that something is off before *everything* burns to the ground! But that was genuinely an added bonus - I ordered it for the motion detection and, placed behind the garage door, it works great!Well, it works great after I moved the Smartthings Hub to the other side of the living room so that it is now 12ft closer to the garage... Before I did that the sensor kept losing contact with the hub - not entirely surprising with a great big metal door in front of it, to be fair. The other thing that struck me was that the batteries plunged to 78% in the first week. Six weeks in they have stabilised at 76% so I suspect this was because the sensor kept losing connection and would waste energy trying to reconnect. If the rate is now ~2% a month then that's definitely good going.I'll update this review in a month if battery usage has stabilished.

A lot of the reviews on Amazon are for motion sensors this review is for the smart plug. As smart plugs go this one is incredibly small and neat. In terms of price, you will have to pay a little bit more for Samsung. Couple this with the expense of a hub they do work out quite expensive however once purchased there are so many other devices that can be added to the hub the investment may be worth while? Installation is quite straight forward but the lack of instructions may phase some people? I already have the SmartThings app on my devices so I am familiar with it. I intuitively knew to search from the app for a new device and found the hub immediately. The app scans the QR code on the hub and updated the hub to the latest firmware, found my broadband router and requested pairing. Once setup a lot of information is displayed from the hub including Power meter and power consumption, timers and on off times. Setting up the plug was a little more challenging and I had difficulty getting the plug to pair with the hub. I learnt holding the power button down for five seconds cured the problem and now all is well. Giving the hub a location name and searching for the plug in the Alexa app enabled me to connect using my Echo speaker. I do have other smart plugs in my house but my broadband router often loses connectivity with them. I am hoping that with the Samsung plug having its own hub connectivity it will be more stable and reliable?

This is a new smart device from SmartThings. It's a button that can control a wide range of SmartThings devices and other smart home kit that SmartThings has the potential to link to. So if you want to manually turn something on or off this button offers a solution - this could bee Philips Hue lights, the TV, anything attached to a smart plug and more. Although it's only one button it can control up too three devices or groups of devices. SmartThings can processes separately commands based on a single push of the button, a double push, or an extended push. The unit can sit on any level surface but also is magnetic so can be attached more firmly to a metal surface. It also has a temperature monitor which could be used in a number of situations - such as turning on a smart plug for a fan heater if the temperature falls below a particular value. The unit forms part of the redesigned SmartThings kit for autumn 2018. It features the rather curvaceous lines of the new kit. It will work with the V2 Hub and well as the new V3 Hub. You do need the Hub as well though to use the kit.Whilst SmartThings would link to buttons produced by other manufacturers this is a welcome addition to the range. I hope that the redesigned kit will prove to be more reliable than previous iterations - time will tell and I'll update this review if I experience any problems.Overall, for now, four stars.

I have just changed to the V3 hub from the older model (not the most straight forward task) and now also have some of the updated sensors. All the new sensors are not quite as easy to setup and from I recall the hub detected them. With the new ones you have to tell the app what kind of sensor it is and then scan the barcode on the new sensor. That all went well and worked first time and the only variable is the naming of the sensor e.g. "Front Door"This sensor has three outputs, the temperature, vibration and what most people are going to use it for a open/closed signal. The open/close is what I am using it for fitted to the front door. The sensor works well even if the two parts are not well aligned but it looks neater when installed if they are (I had to pack the sensor part out with plastic strip with double sided tape to make the bit on the uPVC door and the frame the same level. This and all the other sensors come with double sided sticky tape to attach them.In the app under automations you then just have to decide what events are triggered when the door opens.e.g. lamp 5 & 6, turn on and set, 80% level, trigger open/close, sensor front door, turn off when closed after 5 minutes between sunset and sunrise.Job done.I have not tried it but I guess the vibration sensor could be set to alert you of someone trying to break in to your home.

Samsung SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor - 2018I like it and it works. The white colour works fine on my sliding patio door. However, it isn't as straightforward as you might think. The two items, one for the door and one for the frame seem, before installation, to fit together magnetically much the same as two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Finding a suitable aligned location with moulded door frames was not straightforward. It was easy to add the item manually, as described, but as you can see from the illustration of my patio door, alignment had to be at a right angle, as close as possible. It does work, showing Open or Closed on my Samsung Smart Things app.Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor - 2018The motion sensor is quite neat but the documentation is a little lacking.Having said that, it was really easy to connect to my SmartThings hub. Positioning, if you only have one of these, should be done carefully, bearing in mind its range and the angle you can use to view as much as possible. I put mine at the 'rooms' end of the hall. It works very well. I have included a screenshot of the 'Recently' page which shows the activity.I notice that these items have a battery indicator in the app, but the instructions do not include any instructions for replacement. I hope this will be intuitive when required.

My review is for the particular use-case for which we've been running this sensor for many months now. I have an office at the end of my garden, in the winter it's been great to use the temperature sensing on the sensor to automatically turn on the heating before I go into the office. So now, it's toasty warm when I get in. I haven't been able to set it the other way to activate the A/C though but that's not the sensor's fault - my A/C has a 'soft' on button so can't be activated from the plug socket. So this set-up has worked really very well as long as I remember to activate the sensor the night before a day that I know I'll actually be in the office. It's the comparison with alternatives where this gets interesting; before the SmartThings set-up, I had a simple Alexa plug on the heaters, and would just tell Alexa to turn on the office heat while I walked to the bathroom to have a shower. So the comparison is about ease of use. Theoretically I could use ITTT to connect to my diary and have that as an IF statement in the sensor trigger, that way I'd not even have to remember to talk to Alexa. Feels like faff though. In other areas; it's a beautifully made thing and the whole SmartThings app and integration is really, really well done.

Having used other smart plugs before I was excited to try samsung's new hub and smart plugs to see how they compare and I am very happy and may switch permenantly. Its worth noting before you purchase remember if you are going with one brand you more than likely have to stay with that ecosystem so weigh up all the product lines you may go for first before taking the leap of faith.First of all the hub is so easy to connect and I managed to get it set up in the space of a few minutes. Once I installed the plug to my device of choice which was my coffee machine everything is working like a dream. I have my plug set on a timer to turn my coffee machine on at 7am ready for when I get out of bed so I can feel sane after my daily dose of caffeine !with voice activation a simple command can activate it any time you like making it perfect for almost any device around the house. I found the app on my phone to be really easy and quick to use too but also interesting to see how much power I was using on a daily basis. With a few of these around the house, they can really make a difference to conserve energy, make you conscious to how much power you actually use and also most of all make life easier.Would recommend.

Whilst I don't think any WiFi controlled item is 100% effective having got this to review I figure 98% is better than 0%.And for me this is a potentially useful thing as my house was built by a madman in the 60's who must have been on the pop. There is a crawl space under my house about 4' high which, has been great for running new cables and water as part of the renovation of the house. Weirdly though the mains water into my house was behind a bricked up wall in this space which, I had to cut open. There are many areas like this. So, putting a water sensor down in this dungeon is a 'Good Thing.' Especially as the access is a bit of a mare and not the kind of place routinely inspected. This little sensor does the job. What I've done is put it into a bilge well - I'm a marine engineer - in this space I created. A litre of water is enough to reach the sensor on the bottom followed by an alert. There is also a sensor on the top which I'm not sure what is for. Maybe for putting outside as a rain sensor so you can set up a routine to not turn on garden sprinklers?Anyway, small, neat and seems to work well. I test it each time I come home on leave and so far it's not failed yet.

I have found this to do exactly what I needed it to do, which in my case was to connect with Home Assistant using my existing Zigbee2MQTT integration. It does operate on IEEE 802.15.4 channel 26 (I understand not all devices do) which minimizes overlap with the 2.4GHz WiFi channels and allows certain devices to operate in a lower power mode. Though I still have to do some testing to establish if the mesh is functioning as I changed channel before setting up the smart plug and had a gain in signal anyway (I will update once I have inspected the traffic). The main interest for me was in the metering capability, and for that I find it does update frequently on change of value so response in HA is very good.It returns Real Power (W)and accumulated power consumption (kWh), the areas where I think it is slightly deficient is in not presenting Apparent Power (VA) or the power factor (PFC). I think it would also be handy for it to return how long the current accumulation period is, as a power interruption clears the counter.Overall very good, and I expect I will be buying some more.

This is a well designed sensor. It comes in two parts - the sensor itself and a stand that magnetically attaches to the sensor. The stand is sort of a rounded four sided pyramid with an adhesive base and a "ball bearing" on the top. The sensor itself is a (quite) small rounded square with a dimple on the back that mates magnetically to the ball bearing on the stand. The magnet is quite strong and allows you to mount it at virtually any angle and rotate the sensor if needed. As the magnet is in the sensor, you can also stick the sensor flat onto any metal surface. Rather slick. The sensor seems quite sensitive and detects movement at least four metres away - maybe more.Pairing is simple using either the Classic or the new Smartthings app. The sensor is quite responsive and also reports temperature. All in all, a good buy. In my opinion it's better than the ones that are bundled in the Smartthings starter kits and, due to the well designed mount and slightly smaller size, a superior choice than the other Smartthings motion sensor.
