I bought the Ruffwear Singletrak Backpack for my 70 lb. Rough Collie. I wanted a lightweight, low-profile backpack with good ventilation that could stand up to a variety of sub-optimal terrains and rough treatment. Atticus (my dog) and I enjoy hitting the trails, marshes, fields, and beaches that come with living on the South Carolina coast, but we also needed something he could wear around town without looking silly in. I bought the Medium size in Cloudburst Gray to go with my dogs 29" girth. After using this backpack for a few weeks in all kinds of terrain I have to say that this pack is pretty close to perfect. I've owned several other packs from a Kurgo Baxter Pack to a Outward Hound DayPak,and this pack is by far the best made pack we've ever owned. It's made out of quality, durable materials with careful detail to the seams. The zippers are seamless and don't catch. I was skeptical over if I'd actually be able to lift my 70 lb. dog off the ground, I DID!! Not only that, but he didn't even seem all that uncomfortable with it. A lot of packs push the 'handle' feature, but until now I've never actually owned a pack that would let me lift my dog without risking the packs integrity. It's no belay harness, but it will certainly do for extracting a dog up to his ears in pluffmud. I was a little weary of the plastic clip instead of the metal D-Rings I'm used to, but it has held up just fine. My dog is fairly well behaved on a leash though. I may not trust it to hold up against a heavy puller though, if your dog is I strongly recommend clipping into a backup system (like a slip collar) in case the ring does fail. The pockets are a perfect size for the water bladders that come with it, I fill mine halfway then freeze the water so it helps keep my dog cool in the blazing heat and humidity. In the other pockets I usually put a snack for me, and a snack for him. I have a small collapsible bowl that I snug in behind one of the water bladders, however if you have a fabric collapsible bowl you should be able to fit it into the side pockets just fine, and if all else fails you can always clip a bowl to the D-Ring or leash with a carabiner. The pockets without the water bladders are actually quite roomy and can easily fit one of his tug toys, my tablet, my keys and wallet, and several other items in them. What I really love about this pack though is that it doesn't hinder my dogs range of motion. It's slim design allows my boy to do all the things he does without it, and that is just awesome. He doesn't overheat despite the 105 degree heat index because of the the great ventilation, and I know that I can rely on this pack to hold up to all sorts of adverse conditions. I've fallen in love with this pack, and my dog has too! Every time he seems me take it out his tail starts wagging, and he knows we're in for an adventure! To Summarize:Pros:Great ventilation to prevent overheatingUsable Handle for lifting, supporting, and extracting (even large breeds)Great quality materials and buildLow-Profile does not impede movementNo ChaffingHighly Customizable ensures perfect fitSuper durable and easily cared forCons:May need to use a backup (such as a slip collar) when utilizing the non-metal D-ring for heavy pullers.Have to lift dogs front leg to slip into harness

I am posting this review after about a month of daily use. I will update the review after some time has passed or if my opinion of this product should change. For starters the quality of the pack is top notch. You can tell great care has been exercised to ensure quality materials and workmanship. Seams are heavy duty and well reinforced and the materials are thick and durable. Zippers are also of high quality and open and close without hanging up or getting the pack material caught in them. The layout of the pockets is superb and the pack has a nice low profile that hugs the dog and adds very little bulk. The straps are a little tricky to get the hang of and will require some tinkering to get them set just right but once set, they remain snug and secure. The water bladders have been great for me so far, I have not had issues with leaks or any of the other problems I saw reported in the reviews. This pack is for my 70lb German Shepherd and it fits her quite nicely (I purchased the large model). As I said getting it set for her size was a little tricky and I have had to readjust a few times but overall I am happy with how it fits her. It does not seem to impede her movement or chafe her in any way, although I will admit it would be difficult to know for sure if she were uncomfortable. I will say one odd thing I have noticed is that toward the end of our walk (about 1.2 miles each trip) for the last few blocks she really seems to drag and I almost have to pull her to get her to come. I have never had this issue with her before the pack and it has made me wonder if she is simply tiring quicker from the extra weight (not likely from a younger, healthy high energy dog) or because the pack is somehow uncomfortable by that point in the trip. It may also be that she is still getting used to it. For reference she only carries the two bladders, typically half to completely full, so it isn't that much extra weight.I will say her behavior has been modified by the addition of the pack to our daily walks. She is generally a well behaved dog but I did have issues with her pulling before we got the pack. The change has been amazing. When she has it on she tends to stay right by my side and walk and a smooth even pace, mostly ignoring distractions. The additional work seems to help her focus and give her something to keep her from getting sidetracked. This was a primary motivation behind the purchase so I am very happy with that aspect.I will say this, if you are looking to get your dog a pack that will last and likely be the most comfortable choice for him or her, look no further. I think the quality of this product is undisputed. The only question is, how will your pet take to it?

This pack is awesome! We purchased it after considering some of the roomier Ruffwear, Kyjen, and Mountainsmith options and deciding that those other designs were either too large, too uncomfortable, or too poorly constructed. This pack is great because it's nice and streamlined, so it doesn't hinder our dog's movement when we're hiking, and allows him to roll over (with a light burden), duck and crawl through tight spaces, and run at top speed. The water bottles provided are also great, because it helps us put a bit of weight in there when we're at the dog park, and it gives him a nice job to do so he's nice and tuckered out at home. We just got back from a snowy mountain hike, and the pack is still in great condition, AND the water-resistant material kept the cold and wet snow from him, even though he was rolling around in the stuff. It was about 5 miles round trip, and there were no signs of chafing under his front legs or tummy. It takes a little bit of finagling to get him into it, but after a couple tries, we figured it out. What we did was: loosened all the belly and chest straps out to max length. Grabbed a really good treat and held it in the neck hole, slipped it over his head really quickly while he was preoccupied with a treat. Grabbed ANOTHER treat to keep him from inspecting the new weight on his back too closely, and to distract him while we slipped his front right paw through its loop (it's the only one that doesn't unbuckle like the others and the most difficult part to get into [also, Shake or High Five commands really helped us here]). Then we put down a few more treats as we adjusted both tummy straps to the correct size - left the chest straps alone for now! THEN, we took the whole thing off, leaving the tummy straps tightened to the correct size, and tucked all the extra strap ends into the fabric loop where our guy couldn't chew or scratch or catch them on anything. We intentionally leave the chest straps loose to get the ensemble over his head, and then tighten them when he's in and loosen them right before taking it off. The tummy straps just stay at the size you left them, although I've read a couple of suggestions from people who have sewn the straps onto the correct size to make sure they don't loosen, but that's up to you. Everyone has a different approach, but I figured I'd leave our experience for anyone else who has a little wiggle monster :P

Love it. Size chart is a little off though, had to try 2 different sizes to get the right fit (decided on medium instead of large for my 80lb catahoula who's girth was 32in). Had it for half a year, and use it all the time.Pros-Water pouches double as a cooling pack for my dog.-Fits both water pouches, plastic bags for poop, a fold up water bowl, some dog treats, and an extra set of car keys (incase we lose them when camping, the dogs got a spare), thought about adding a portable battery and mini bluetooth speaker too cause why not.-Can fit weights to help wear out my dog faster.-Water pouches have flat bottom for standing upright when filling.-Very reflective at night & had mounting spots for strapping flow lights (or glow sticks)onto both sides for added visibility.-Handle makes great for controlling and lifting your dog away when they are scared or being aggressive.-Easy to put on and take off. Both dogs know the drill.-Makes my dog look like he's a service dogCons-Not exactly the same design as the Web Master ruffwear, has a big plastic loop for the leash clip, not a metal one. Worries me that it may break because my dog is pretty big and strong. Hasn't broken yet though.-Leash loop in the middle of the harness which makes it more difficult to hang on the wall compared to the Web Master harness that my other dog has.-Even when tight on my dog, still tends to sag to one side if he's carrying water in the pouches.Much preferred over the Approach dog backpack from Ruffwear. The Approach way way to big and didn't fit properly on my dog.Highly recommend for big dog owners, especially if you go camping. Even if you don't camp it's still very convenient to always have plastic bags, water & a bowl always on my dog.

We absolutely love our singletrak pack! Our border collie is 30-32 lbs, his chest is 24-25 inches, and neck is about 16 inches and a small fits him perfect. Since he's a stringbean the last strap has a long piece that dangles once it's tightened. We just tuck it in, but if we happen to forget he will pee on it. Apart from that minor issue its a perfect fit. He's a pretty high energy dog and never seems to get tired, even on long hike, so we got this in the hopes it'll give him a job to do. When the two included soft water bottles are filled with water and added to the pack it adds enough weight to make him work a little harder and slow him down a bit. With the water bottles filled we're still able to fit a collapsible bowl,a roll of poop bags, a tennis ball, keys and phone if we wanted. There is a large pocket, and a very thin smaller pocket on each side. The smaller pockets arent very useful unless you have smaller or flatter items to put in it. I think we have the poop bags in a small pocket, but everything else ends up in the larger pockets. We picked the Singletrak instead of the other models because it's a great streamlined daypack. I attached a picture of our boy from behind and you can see the pack barely sticks out on the sides. It is light and small enough that he can still run around and play fetch without it interfering. It's been through a lot of use, has gotten wet, and it's still in perfect condition. Ruffwear may be pricey, but their packs really last! We love it so much we're buying a larger pack for backpacking so he can carry his food as well.

Great backpack. It distributes the weight evenly. A word of caution, it can get heavy. When the water bottles are full the total weight of the pack is 1.6 Kg(3.5 lbs). The pack can get heavier if you add more stuff in the small pockets. This might be too heavy for some small dogs. To train my dog to deal with the weight, I have been building up te weight slowly. For the first times, fill the water bottles partially and build it up from there in the next hikes. Also, when you are using the water during your hike, try to use the water in the bottles evenly. Otherwise, the pack will lean to one of the sides (towards the heavier side). It does not lean much but it is enough for me to notice. When the bottles are full of water, there is not much space for anything else in the big pockets, but I still manage to put a leash, some food and a foldable bowl in the small pockets. This is a minimalistic pack, do not expect to fill it with a lot of stuff. I use it for trail running with my dog. Some reviews reported that the pack calm down some dogs, I did not notice a significant change of energy (movement) with my dog. Maybe a drop of 10% of his usual energy at the beginning. As he drinks the water his amount of energy goes back to usual. The energy of my dog goes back to usual when the bottles are at 50% capacity. He is able to run as fast and jump as high as usual when the water is at 50%. The contact surface of the pack is large, this might cause overheating in sunny days, but I have not tested this. Overall, I really like the pack and I would strongly recommended.

It happens every time with Ruffwear products. You wince at the price, buy it anyway, and are glad you did. In my case I bought 2. I have 2 labs. One 65 lbs and one 75 lbs. I bought 2 mediums as there is usually sooooo much adjustment length on straps and I wanted the most streamlined profile possible for the dogs when we are out on the trails. I probably should have bought the large for my 75 lb dog as the chest piece on this pack has very little adjustment so if you have a broad/barrel chested dog and you are in doubt I'd go a size up. It sits about 1 inch higher on her chest than I would like but it doesn't seem to bother her. (See picture the chocolate lab in the pictures I posted.)The pack sits great in the chest area on my smaller black lab. I believe that the original Singletrak model did not have a leash attachment point (which was not wise) however this updated model does have one. It seems sturdy enough but why it's not a securely attached metal ring like other pack they make, I don't know. I have to cinch these up pretty tight to keep them from sliding side to side, but the dogs don't seem to mind. The collapsible bottles are great and can actually be placed in either pocket. I put the bottles in the smallest pocket so that I can use the bigger pockets for the real reason that I have my dogs wear packs. Dog poop. Yep. My puppies are avid poopers and I don't like being the poop mule on our outings. This solves the issue without the need for a huge bulky pack.

I like to go trail running with my dogs, but hated carrying everything for the both of us in my small running belt. With keys, cellphone, poop bags, and other personal items flapping away at my waist with every stride, I could only focus on the awful clatter and incessant slap of my heavily loaded belt instead of just enjoying our run together. I finally decided on getting a pack so at least one of my dogs could carry some of the load, but didn't like how most dog packs are heavy palisades. They look so big and cumbersome, especially since I only needed the dog to carry a few items on our run. The singletrak backpack is considerably more expensive than most dog packs you find, but it's worth every penny. It's sleek and fits closely to the dog's body. The pockets are spacious, especially if you're not using the rubber water packs that come with the pack. I also really like how most of the load is distributed towards the front of the dog, where it's strongest instead of throughout the back, which most dog packs seem to do. There is a handle on the topside which is great for picking your dog up over obstacles on the trail and there is also a D ring type clip to attach the lead if you want. The entire pack is made of thick sturdy material instead of that thin fabric you seem in some packs that are prone to ripping/fraying. It fits my dog very well and he doesn't even seem to notice that it's there.

I was looking for a pack that would give my dog a little extra exercise by adding some weight. My dog is an uber-athlete and needs a little extra challenge. This is a really well made pack that has a low profile, which is great when he's running through the woods. We fill the two water bladders and put one on either side. The pack stays put on him and seems comfortable. I got the medium size; my dog is almost 60 pounds and is built lean. It fits him well. He doesn't mind wearing it outside at all, probably because he loves running around and doesn't even notice it. However once I did try putting it on him inside the house when we were playing, and it freaked him out, so I took it off.I'd be careful in the summer months as it might make him hot; he's pretty heat sensitive when exercising.I could also swear he's slightly better behaved with it, but I'm not 100% sure. He sometimes gets a little reactive towards approaching strangers, but I haven't seen him do this when wearing the pack. I don't have enough observations yet to say this for sure, but I'm wondering if it's a minor thundershirt effect or maybe the extra weight makes him more tired, or psychologically slows him down... not sure. I'll report back later after we use it more in terms of his behavior and also how well the pack wears. So far, I love it.

I bought this for two uses: 1. For when we go hiking and 2. For taking my dog on longer runs and being able to get her water to prevent her from overheating. I have not had a chance to use it hiking yet, and I haven't used the water containers, but we've done a few short test runs and a few walks just to get her accustomed to wearing it. I was really happy with how well it fits her and the harness seems strong and comfortable. If adjusted well, the pack didn't move around on her at all. I did find the straps a little tough to adjust, but once I figured them out they were fine. The color is nice and the handle is really handy for being able to move your dog if necessary (mine can be reactive on leash,so it's a nice feature for me). My only concern is that my dog likes to pull and she's rather strong in her front shoulders. I'm worried about how much leverage she'll have when going downhill hiking, but on our first run she didn't pull too much in this, so I hope she doesn't start. I also found the pockets on the side a little small. I had hoped to fit a collapsible bowl in there, but it only fits in the same pocket as the water bottles and I doubt it will fit when the bottles are full. I guess I'll have to clip the bowl to the outside, which isn't a problem assuming the clip doesn't break.

Bought this pack for a 3 day/31 mile backpacking trip in the Pemigewasset Wilderness in New Hampshire. I have several dog packs and they always seem to have the same problems: 1) straps come loose, 2) pack goes crooked, 3) dog runs the pack into things, 4) I end up carrying the pack and defeating the whole purpose. I absolutely love this pack and so did my German shorthaired pointer mix. She's 55 lbs and I ordered a medium. The three point front pad of the harness keeps the whole pack in place, and the integrated .6L water bottles (two) distribute the weight over the pack and are low profile, so she doesn't run into trees or get stuck trying to get through too-narrow spaces. My dog runs like a banshee through the woods and this pack stayed put and generally stayed level - I am extremely impressed. The two outer pockets are small but I used them to carry a collapsible water bowl and a trail bar for easy access. The trip covered 9 mountain ascents and a pack of lesser construction would have been beat to shreds. The handle was key; she was comfortable being lifted up and down steep boulder fields when she couldn't make the jumps herself.I couldn't rave enough about this pack to every dog lover I met on the trail!

After researching several dog packs, I decided to splurge on this one as I liked the streamlined look. I haven't used it yet on a hike, but it seems well constructed and I like that the side packs won't be hitting our dog in the side when she walks or runs. Since my husband and I will be carrying some water for her along with our own, the added water bladders will help lighten our load. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that it is very difficult to adjust the straps. We definitely can't adjust them while the dog is wearing the pack, so it's taken quite a bit of time to get the right fit. It still seems a bit loose to me, but right now we've only had her wear the pack empty on our short walks so she can get used to having it on her back. She's not a fan of the pack however, and it definitely slows her down on walks, but I'm fine with that. I hope by having her wear it each time we go for walks, she'll adjust before our mountain hiking trip this summer. I do agree with other reveiwers though, that the leash attachment would be more secure if it was metal, but we will still keep her regular collar on for her leash. If anyone can give us some tips on an easier way to adjust the straps, please reply.

I've been joking with my friends all week about the fact that I spent more on a backpack for my dog than I ever have on one of my own. In fact, the price ALMOST prompted me to give it four stars, but I've decided that it was worth the money (assuming it holds up for many more years). The first time my pup wore it around the house he hated it and acted like he had a million pounds on his back. As soon as he went outside though, it didn't bother him one bit. He wore it on a 3-day backpacking trip and it was perfect. My biggest concern was that it would get caught on something when he was running through the woods like a maniac, but it never once slowed him down or snagged on anything. No rubbing issues either. He's a very dense 65 pounds (most people guess he's 40-45) and has a very thick chest, so we got him a large. If it was one inch longer it would've been too big, but it's actually pretty perfect for him. I really debated between this bag and several other way cheaper ones, but I'm very glad we went with this option rather than the more traditional saddlebag that would've hindered his chipmunk chasing.

Our puppy is full of beans, rears up with enthusiasm & sometimes wants to pull on walks (husky mix & nincompoop handler). The trainer has encouraged "work" & puzzles/games to engage him with. This pack has really made a difference when pup is feeling particularly energetic. We haven't done a proper day-hike yet, but he's gone for 1.5 hr walks to no ill effect.Things that we particularly like about this product:- sturdy construction: I'm confident it will last well thru much of the inevitable abuse in its future.- multiple, easily adjustable straps: make it easy to fit snugly/appropriately so that it doesn't shift or chafe- handle on top to help pull pup out of stream beds & briar patches whenhe needs a lift- pouches: even just filling the water bags half way seems to make a big difference in depleting energy & giving pup a sense of "work"This pack is a bit more costly than some others I looked at, but the quality & fit seem substantially better. If you are a tactile type, I saw many different packs (including ruffwears) @ REI. So, check 'em out there & then save some dough, buying them here.

Simply amazing, I bought the backpack for my husky/shepherd mix because on walks he pulls very hard and I also run long distance with him. I was looking for a backpack that didn't have pockets going down his body. This backpack is small and perfectly fits two water bottles, a bowl for him to drink water, snacks for me, and another collar. I loved this because the moment I bring it out he know he's going for a walk. When he wears the pack he becomes a different dog. He doesn't pull as hard anymore. I put two water bottles with sand in it for him to "pull" so he sees the pack as a job. My dog (his name is Camber) becomes more focused at the task. Which is awesome he's become more obedient when on walks.I recommend this product to anyone that hikes or runs with there dog. We even use the pack for daily walking. We also go on 2-5 mile hikes in local wisconsin parks and he does a great job' the pack itself is light and have sturdy in design. The fit is also perfect just be sure to strap it down a little tight if you don't the pack slides to one side. :) So buy the pack now and see your dog change!!
