First off, this can be very effective when used correctly and humanely. I bought it because it is an alternative to shock, but my dog clearly found it very aversive, so it is important to take care in how you use it, especially if your dog has an observable reaction to it. I suspect a problem could be made worse if a dog becomes very fearful.I was having a problem with my dog licking the floor incessantly and to the point of actually ruining the floor. Her vet said the licking was not health related. I started by trying to keep her mouth with engaged with Kongs, raw hides, and toys, but she preferred the floor. Here are some things that I think are important for using this:Have some training bits and reward your dog for doing what you want them to do instead. For instance, if they bark, you can reward a low growl or quiet. If they jump, you can prompt them to not do that by putting their leash around your ankle and then having someone reward them when they don't jump on them.Don't use this until you can use it consistently for a period of time, it is important to catch every instance (and quickly!) in the beginning. Using it inconsistently will confuse the dog and allow the dog to possibly become desensitized to the sound before the behavior is eliminated. For instance, if you work weekdays, start on a Friday night, keep it with you, and catch every instance all weekend. You will still need to be consistent after that, but the beginning is most important. If this is going to work, you will know it after using this consistently for a few days because the behavior will decrease significantly.I was careful to use this for only one behavior (licking), even though my dog does some other things I would like to discourage. Now that licking has been eliminated, I will consider using it for some other behavior. It is probably not a good idea to threaten or warn the dog with this. They will likely learn to stop when you warn or threaten, but they will still initiate the behavior as frequently. The warnings will also probably stop working over time.If you have more than one pet, that could be a problem unless they tend to get in trouble together. You could end up punishing the dog who is behaving.Of course, for the best dog behavior, I think it is also important to walk your dog, play with them and try to keep them engaged.(I am not an expert, these are just some suggestions from someone who used this successfully)This has a great battery life, much better than a vibrating/noise collar that I tried before.

I have a poodle pup that is far too rough on our senior pug. She isn't viciously attacking, just a constant biting of her ears, chewing her legs, belly and other soft spots and the pug is too old and arthritic to defend herself very well. She will stop for a minute with No! but then happily goes right back to it. She thinks it is a game of dare me. She's too little for any of the vibrating corrective collars and I don't believe in shock collars for most dogs, small dogs in particular. We got this today and have used it 3 times. This evening after a few hours use, and only the three corrections, the puppy is playing with her toys and playing very gently with her older sibling. After the 3rd use,she started looking my way when she wanted to jump on the pug and decided to go for a toy instead. There was no fear from either of the dogs using this device, only an immediate startled look with the pup stopping her bad behavior. But there doesn't seem to be any residual fear or nervousness like I've seen with other corrective devices. And I'm not yelling No every five minutes. I acknowledge that poodles are very intelligent dogs and she learns a lot faster on most tasks than other dogs so I don't know if my experience is typical. She was also already well aware her harassment behavior was unwanted, but also oblivious to other forms of correction and redirection we had tried. There are two reasons I don't give it 5 stars. One is that it can't target just one dog. The second and more important reason is that the physical construction of the device is very awkward. You literally have to take the thing apart with a screwdriver to put the battery in, and then it's a challenge to get the battery in and closed again. It could easily be broken just trying to get the battery changed. They should've gone with the normal sliding battery door. As far as general usage notes, I think this is a device best used by people with at least some concept of dog training methods as it could be misused. Definitely it should be used by adults only.

This product does work on my dog. However the "positive tone" that is provided for positive reinforcement is NOT positive to her! She is really disturbed by it, so I don't use that as the signal for "good job". I only use the negative ultrasonic tone, just as she starts to bark unnecessarily at neighbors passing our door, or harmless street noise. I press the negative tone and say "Quiet" simultaneously. She doesn't like the tone much, it gets her attention, she stops barking and I then praise her, pet her, and sometimes give a snack. She now is beginning to associate my "Quiet" command with the tone, so she will often stop barking just with the command (which is my goal). You need to be very consistent, and use it for all the instances of unwanted barking in the house if possible. I have taken to carrying the Remote Trainer device around with me at home, so that at the first sign of unwanted barking, I use the tone and the command. It has taken me a week or so to get used to doing this, but I see it is starting to work on curbing her barking. I do limit my usage to just a quick pulse of the tone, as I can tell she doesn't like it, and I hope it is not too painful for her. Soon I hope, with diligence on my part, she will be trained enough that I don't have to use it at all. (FYI, this is a tool for in your house only! you can't use it on walks, you will be "punishing" the other dogs nearby, and perhaps training your dog to fear approaching dogs or worse. My dog does bark at other dogs when on the leash, learning the "Quiet" command at home might help, but not sure it will!)

The PetSafe Ultrasonic trainer uses sound to assist in training dogs. If the animal misbehaves, one push of the training button will emit an irritating high frequency sound (humans can't hear it) to reinforce the verbal command. Much more humane than an electrical shock. There is a second sound that is barely audible to the human ear and is not irritating if you wish to reinforce a positive response to a command.I have used it successfully for barking control. One of my dogs, a chihuahua-terrier mix. instantly will stop barking upon hearing the signal, followed by my command. Now she just stops with the command, and no ultrasonic aid is required. The trainer has been slightly less succesful on my second dog,a miniature poodle. It may be those floppy ears cover the ear canal better or he just has a high frequency hearing loss. Nonetheless, when one dog stops barking, the other follows. I have not used the trainer for other dog training exercises.I have tried stationary bark control units and have never found them to be effective. This device requires you to have it in your hand and you have to to press the button to emit a signal. I keep it next to the front door to use either when strangers come to the house or when I let the dogs out for their walk. So, that's a convenience drawback. My dogs are trained now, so if I just pick up the TV remote control, they will instantly stop barking, thinking that it's the ultrasonic trainer.

This device is an effective humane way of handling stubborn "Yorkie Attitude" when it occassionally rears it's head. It is effective at stopping little tiffs, barking, and controlling unwanted behaviors or habits. A few years ago, I bred Yorkies and then changed to rescue and ended up with 9 permanent residents! I love them all and enjoy each of the life stage transitions they grow through. I love adult yorkies! When one starts to bark, the others feel compelled to support their commrads. I reward them for letting me know there is a disturbance and then speak in a soothing tone to let them know it is okay, then tell them "off". Most of the time that is enough but if not,I then press the button briefly and say "off" again. I repeat twice if needed. Generally I speak in a insistent but soft voice and stand quietly waiting for compliance. Mostly they will stop and rarely I will need to press the button once more. I also use it to back up any commands not complied with and find it "adjust yorkie attitudes" gently and their is a short learning curve. For me it is helped tremendously and it is humane. I hate yelling or repeating commands over and over ineffectively and this is the device to obtain compliance of even the most stubborn little yorkie. It is a great training tool to back up good training strategies.

Truly satisfied with this Ultrasonic Remote Training tool for all my Furry Family. I read and reread the pamphlet, took my time with the positive and negative applications, and the results have been great! I walk my 3 dogs every morning and sometimes when another person is coming my way with an unruly dog, mine have a tendency of overreacting. I keep the Remote in my hand and one Zap of the "Negative" button and my command "NO", and they come to my attention and immediately calm down. It's wonderful!Sometimes my 2 larger dogs, Shepherd and Bird Dog, will be playing and chasing each other in the backyard, and all of a sudden they start in on each other for dominancy. One press of the "N" and they immediately stop and calm down. Same in the house, if they start barking when they hear someone walking by, it starts up all 3 of them in a frenzy, but the "Trainer" comes to the rescue again. It's amazing!I also have 5 cats, who are pretty lay back and easy going, but because I am careful when I direct the remote towards the dogs ONLY, they don't seem to be bothered by it at all. This is definitely a KEEPER! For my uses anyhow and my Furry Kids. This came highly recommended by my Sister in FL, and I will surely give it big "kudos" as well

I got this for our 3 dachshunds. If you have dachshunds, you know the possibilities for using this are endless: barking, peeing, chewing (or shredding) . . . My current priority right now is to teach them that when I say quiet, that means quit barking or I will blast your little canine ears with this black box. The first time I used it (in conjunction with saying "quiet" in a firm but not Mommy Dearest voice) they visibly jumped and were quiet immediately. The next time I said quiet, they were quiet. I've only had to use it once more for the barking. It has to be used in conjunction with the bad behavior,so if you have smart dogs you'll have to set up a surveillance post and catch them en flagrante delicto. You will have to call 9-1-1 and ask them to bring the Jaws of Life to open the package, so I took off a star for that. The package is more annoying than the barking, frankly. Also, the design of the battery compartment is not the most elegant I've ever seen. They put the screw post right at the end of the battery niche, and when you snap the electrodes on it's now too long to fit inside. Just jam it in there, put the lid on and screw it down, and it will work. Or make the firemen do it.

Bought it originally for a next-door-neighbor's barking dog who would go on for a few hours at a time (I'm a stay at home mom, so it got very irritating day after day). Didn't want to call Animal Control on them again (they only come out once, after that you need 3 neighbors to also file a complaint before anything will be done. Uhhh,....yeah. Thanks for the help!?!). I ended up not needing it for the dog after all as his barking had lessened, of course once it arrived (Ha!). But.....I tried it when my cats were aggressively fighting and it worked 100%! One quick push of the "N" ("Negative or No") button and you would have thought I had thrown a bucket of water on them! They literally jumped up and looked very startled. Scared them so much though that they were cautiously looking around every corner for the next hour, so go gentle with the button! Just one short push and it freaked them out. DO NOT overuse it or you could really be abusive and unkind to your pet. "More is Better" is NOT the way to go with this device. Btw, it worked on other neighbor cats who would fight viciously too. Bought a second replacement one when I misplaced mine during our recent move.

I really like this device. I can't hear it but my Dachshund sure does. Doxies are barkers. Getting a Doxie to be quiet is quite a chore because they are natural hunting dogs. That's what they were bred for. The bark was used to effectively scare their prey. Unfortunately, that trait is well ingrained. When my dog began her usual barking then one quick push of the remote trainer button and she immediately quit barking. The next time, I pushed the button and followed it by saying, "shhhhh." After about a dozen times like this over a couple of weeks, all I need do is say, "shhhhh," and she pipes down. I don't need the device when at home. I take the device when we are out in public as a back-up in case she barks.I've needed it in public a couple of times but that is it. I've never been more than 12 feet away when using the remote trainer so I don't know it's range. Also, I don't recommend using it too much. I think it may be possible for a dog to get used to the sound then ignore it. I only push the button for a second. I want the dogs attention and not punish the dog with a prolonged high pitch sound. I'm very pleased with this device and would recommend it.

I try not to use it because I certainly don't want to cause discomfort but when my cat is howling at 4am and she has everything she could possibly need, she's not sick or in pain, and she's too far away to spritz with water, this thing works. I actually ended up buying her automated toys that turn themselves off and on every few hours which keep her engaged in the wee hours and those have helped tremendously, so I haven't had to use this too often but yup! It definitely does work on my cat. She does not enjoy the sound of it and realizes it means a hard NO. Okay, things I DIDN'T like about it - it took almost 30 minutes to break it out of the packaging then it took over an hour to try to remove the miniscule screws that hold it together.I had to purposely break off the belt clip just to access one of the screws. I tried every piece of metal in my house to open it. I even have a mini 4" screwdriver but even that didn't work. I was pretty furious trying to get the damn thing open. Finally used the tiny metal file part of some nail clippers. They should have provided something to remove the screws so you can put the batteries in.

I got this ultrasonic device to stop my dogs from barking incessantly for no good cause. I had seen units that are automatically triggered every time the dog barks. However, I wanted my dogs to be able to be dogs and bark normally. I just want them to stop after I've investigated and tell them to stop. Well, the verdict is out on this device. I like the fact that it is not automatic and I control it. The dogs definitely notice it, and when I say "quiet" after the sound they are starting to understand that the sound means something. However, they have not become fully compliant as yet. Many times the just return to barking after I leave. I am going to continue training them with it, adding rewards, and hoping that they will eventually obey the command for more than a brief moment.Update Oct 2019Should have done this earlier. After several months of training with this, my dogs did learn the "quiet" command. Ever since I have not needed to use this. But when I get a new dog I will use it again. And I do recommend it with the caveat that you give it time. Always say quiet after using it.

I purchased this for a little malti-poo dog at my work who would use his shrill bark to get his way all the time. He would bark if he wanted fed, bark if he wanted to go outside, bark when he wanted to come back inside, bark if he wanted picked up, bark, bark, bark! I was sick of it. He would also growl and bark at other dogs just for walking by him. Hateful dog. So the first time I tried this, he immediately stopped his bad behavior and went and laid down. It only took two or three times of using this to correct his bad behavior completely. Now, the other dogs he would bark and growl at did not seem affected by it. One is a husky and one is an australian shepherd (who is deaf,so there is that). After getting the hateful malti-poo under control, I decided to take it home and try it on our blue heeler. True to his breed, he likes to herd the kids, the four wheeler, golf cart, gator, basically anything that moves. Well, once or twice of hitting the button on him has worked wonders! He now no longer wishes to be outside when the kids go out. Amazing results!

I bought this for my year-old Golden Retriever. He had a habit of jumping on everyone even children. He also would pull at our clothing to get our attention. I consulted with our Invisible Fence company when they were out repairing a cut wire. They suggested this product and demonstrated it using our dog. When the dog went to jump, he gave a verbal "off" and used the negative sound. Our dog immediately sat. I still hestitated to buy one because of all the bad reviews. However, it was the best 30 dollars, I ever spent. My only regret is that I didn't get it sooner. I think it took only one tone for the jumping and one for the clothes pulling for my husband and me. I still carried it outside with me ,thinking that I would like a chance to use it when delivery people, etc. came into the yard. I was shocked when I took him out and our neighbors came over and he didn't jump. It has been over a month and nothing has changed. I wonder if this product is more effective on dogs that are invisible fence trained as a warning tone is used in the training.

I'm not quite sure what to think yet. My Chihuahua will sit in front of the TV and bark or sit at the window and bark at things out side. I just got this remote trainer and used it once last night. He went crazy, growled at the carpet where he was standing and left the room and would not come back. he would not play or anything. I had to coax him to start playing and come back in and sit with us. After a while he was OK. Now this morning he looked at the TV and started to bark. I pushed the N button once and it is the same thing all over again. It does not help to push the P button because that bothers him also, even though I say good boy and try to praise him for no barking..He is a rescue dog that we have had for 3 weeks, I don't know what kind of homes he was in. But I certainly don't want to make him feel abused in any way. But I don't want in acceptable behavior either.

This is a very useful dog training tool. Used in moderation and not overdone. My dog has sensitive hearing and it took once for him to get it after that, it would just have been torture - so I suggest being very careful with this item around dogs and cats as their hearing is many times more sensitive than ours. I used it on a neighbor's dog who was barking incessantly! Driving everyone nuts. The dog has a dog door and can go outside when they are gone. I took it out by their yard and pushed the 'negative' button and that dog ran inside. He came out once, just to check it out, but I did it again and that was the end of that! He spent the rest of the night barking INSIDE the house and annoying the neighbors much less.I can't speak for the "positive" sound, but the negative sound definitely made an impression when I used it.
