IMPORTANT FITTING TIPS TO FOLLOW. Was a bit unsure what size to order, I have a Boxer dog and she's very lively, clumsy and daft as armpits but was worried if a bought a large flap it might present as security risk. After a bit of tempting (standing outside with a chicken leg) she eventually came thru it, I immediately went indoors (with chicken leg) but she was reluctant to come back in. After studying it for a few mins I realized that the outside step was a few inches lower than the kitchen floor so I placed a paving slab on the doorstep and bingo she came in straight away. She now uses it with ease and it makes me smile watching her go in and out. She's not a large boxer but has no trouble with the size,as I say I think the height is probably the most important factor.FITTING: I fitted it in to an fairly old upvc door and actually overlapped a catflap fitted by previous house owner. Warning, old upvc is very brittle so if you are jigsawing it out make sure you use the finest toothed blade you have and set it on a slow speed, I had a couple of bits breakout but fortunately the wide frame has covered them ok. IMPORTANT you get 4 long plastic bolts to hold the 2 halves together, use a manual screwdriver (I used my small power driver and even being careful snapped one bolt, Petsafe bless them posted me a replacement foc) and DONT do them up tight, just barely finger tight will do as they expand & contract with temp and I have had one break after 2 weeks. There are no sealing gaskets round the frame but as it was a lovely snug fit I thought ok no problem, wrong, as soon as we had some heavy rain it leaked water on to kitchen floor. Took it back off and ran a bead of silicone around all areas and refitted and perfect now. Don't make my mistake, put a decent bead around it when you first install then you'll have no problem and wont have to faff around with the plastic bolts.QUALITY: seems well made and magnetic strip keeps it closed in all but the strongest winds and it comes with a very nice slide on cover that locks in to place if you want to shut it off at night or if weathers really ghastly. I believe the soft plastic flap is replaceable if it ever wears out so all in all I would thoroughly recommend this product.**UPDATE** 30/11/2015:Am still loving this flap but as I live on an Island now the strong winds have started I have found that the flap will blow open and let an unwelcome draught in to the house. I contacted PetSafe (0800 046 14 14) for advice and their friendly & helpful customer service team suggested that I should fit an additional plastic flap (the same as the original one, undo the four silver screws at the top of the flap and slip in) as this will make it a bit heavier and should help. Ordered it from them over the phone for £11 very straightforward.

I bought this to replaces cat flap that did not survive the arrival of our young Rottweiler. She likes to poke her head out the flap and see what is happening on the other side, but her collar catches and strains the frame. The cat tends to leave at speed sometimes, (especially if one of the dachshunds has heard him move). And yes, it is a madhouse! We've had a number of cat flaps over the years, all plastic framed, all died eventually. Last time I had the whole lower panel of a upvc back door replaced and a new Staywell cat flap put in (not his Aluminium one). It took the fitter half an hour to replace the panel and 1 1/2 hours to fit the cat flap - it was a nightmare. So when the 'kids'finally ripped out the flap and shattered the plastic frame I started looking for a new one that might survive, and be easy to fit. What a dream! Firstly it arrived the following day. Since it is December, and the weather is unusually mild, I was hoping to get it fitted on the Sunday before the wind and rain returns.Secondly it is strong. The slim aluminium frame is reinforced at the corners, and the flap is a soft plastic, so less likely to shatter. (It reminds me of the plastic curtains you can see at a butcher's shop; on the entrance to the chiller- thick and flexible). The inner cover is thick, reinforced plastic, and will lock the flap relatively firmly, but do consider your security. A strong kick will tear it out, and the medium flap is large enough for a small child to climb through. My solution is a lock on the utility door, so that all they can get to is the utility room, and the key for the back door is not in the utility, so all they could steal would be things small enough to go through the flap.Thirdly it was a dream to fit! Being square, the shape to cut was easy. Measuring was also simple, the template was very clear, and once in place drilling for the bolts was easy. The downside is the bolts. They are plastic, and, even though the instructions are very clear that you should not over tighten them, it is all to easy to misjudge it. This tears the head off the bolt and makes it useless. But, full credit to PetSafe; an email via their website from me was followed up buy a phone call from them the following day, a couple of quick questions, and they have posted a replacement bolt! Now, please don't rely on this, but if you do the dumb thing, it is nice to think they will rescue you!

This is actually the second one we've bought of these. The reason being that our back door locking mechanism has finally given up the ghost and we had to get a new backdoor. With the dogs going in and out of these flaps all day, even with cleaning, the do get a bit scratched up and dirty over time so we thought that if we're forking out for a new door we might as well get a new flap to go with it.It's very easy to fit - at least that's what the door installers told me :-)The size I have is the MEDIUM one and its perfectly adequate for my dogs which are miniature schnauzers. The black one that you see in the picture, Ben, he's quite large for a miniature schnauzer and still fits through it perfectly well.Maybe the small might be ok for other Miniature Schnauzers. You'll notice we've installed the flap very low on the door. This is because the cover that slides into it to secure the flap requires as much space above it as possible. The old one we installed too high and it was difficult to get the security cover out and in because we had to bend it a little because the recessed panel in the door. Where it is now is perfect. The security cover has a little metal spring loaded lock on it. I do have to pull this out when I'm pushing it down into the flap to get over the edges, but once its in, its impossible to open from the outside as far as we can tell. The flap is also magnetic so it stays shut even in the wind - this was a definite requirement of mine as I didn't want it flapping open in the wind and letting the cold air in.In summary, I'm very happy - I wouldn't have bought one again if I wasn't.

The cat flap seems excellent; it's well constructed and quiet. However, our (wooden) door is 10mm thick. The entire cat flap assembly consists of two metal parts (each a panel to sit flush with the door and a short "tunnel" going through the door). The two "tunnels" slot into each other. When slotted together, the gap between the insides of the two panels is about 25mm. If the door is thicker than this (presumably up to the length of the supplied screws), I'd imagine there's no problem. However, if you have a 10mm door, there's 15mm worth of gap, so there would be hard edges and the whole thing wouldn't stay in one place. Unless the suppliers expect you to cut the aluminium down (which I doubt given the position of the serial number, and the likely sharp edges it would produce), or I've missed some feature, I don't think the Amazon description of "for doors from 9.5mm" is correct. We got round this by using some 18mm-thick wood (an old shelf), cut to a rectangle the size of the outer edge of the flap (about 200x300mm), with a 150x245mm hole in the middle the size of the "tunnel", plus 7mm holes for the cat flap's screws to go through; this then adds to the "sandwich" so instead of panel/door/panel, we have panel/door/extra wood/panel, and this works fine (and looks OK).So: be prepared for some woodwork if you have a thin door!

I originally bought the Extreme Weather Extra Large and fitted it to the outside patio door - I replaced the complete glass panel with the door flap and built a frame back around the door flap. This is a very good solution as previously the door was always open, so my dog could go outside into the garden. The temperature in the kitchen has now gone back up as the door is always closed. The downside to this door, is that a strong gust of wind will blow the door flap of its magnets - I will build a little tunnel on the outside to reduce the force of the wind.I then bought a second extra large door for the internal room, as this door was always left open for my dog to wander about between rooms. This door is excellent as the door is now always shut and my dog just uses the flap to wander between rooms .The pictures attached show the 1st door Extreme Weather fitted into the outside patio door, including a video of my German Shepherd coming inside the kitchen. The other picture is of the internal door that I fitted with ease.I've read others complain about the Extreme Weather door and I agree with them about not needing a big gust of wind to blow it open.Overall I'm happy with the doors as the rooms are now a lot warmer and winter is here.

We got the medium pet flap to replace the cat flap we had in place. We’d had a chip reading one that our little dog managed to break both locks on. We replaced that with an ordinary cat flap but the dog struggled with it. We needed the medium because of the size of the existing hole.I fitted this to a UPVC door with moulded design which needed trimming off to get it to sit flush. That wasn’t difficult with a hack saw blade. It took a while to get the size right as the “pattern” didn’t sit flush on the door. The thing that irritated me was the cheap plastic screws. Two of the cross heads stripped really easily. I discarded the first as there was a spare. The second I had to tighten with two pliers, which took ages as I had to use a long nose pair that didn’t grip easily. I also had to do this through the pet flap which made visibility difficult. What the information doesn’t tell you is that after all this (and I was happy it looked good) the guard needs a flush door to fit on easily. I’m going to have to trim some of the UPVC moulded design away, which is going to look horrible. :(But the dog now gets in and out very easily. Going to be interesting tonight as Storm Dennis descends on us, might get that guard on no matter what!!

Purchased this to replace a standard medium sized pet door, of which our dog had managed to destroy three over a four year period, and purely through his exuberant exits to the garden, causing the outside frame to fracture and eventually break. This one, by comparison, has a flexible door that only opens to the size of the dogs body. Its also a lot quieter in operation. No more "clack, clack", more a "tsk, tsk". All in all a far better solution, and with replaceable flaps being available, I can see this being used for a considerable number of years. Two points that prospective purchasers should note, however. The door frames are held in place by nylon bolts that will break at the least sign of being overtightened,so be very careful and probably better to use a manual tool, rather than an electric to tighten these. Also, and the supplied instructions don't really highlight this, when fitting the door, you need to allow double the door height as a flat space to allow the security door to be fitted and removed easily. If fitting in the recessed bottom panel of a uPVC door as I did, with the flap mounted near the bottom, there is only just enough room to fit the security door without it being baulked by the door centre frame.

I have had Petsafe doors for years but recently had one fitted to a UPVC double glazed door with a split mid rail (two glazed parts to the door). Because of this mid rail it was impossible to get the safety door cover onto the fitted pet door below. My builder had to devise a separate upvc panel to go on to it which is flexible and will bend into the runners each side of the fitted pet door and which could bend sufficiently to pass the mid rail of the upvc door. Disappointing as it stops the flap blowing inwards on a windy night but is not secure.I rang Petsafe and was told they are aware of the problem and their American HQ are working on something for the Uk/European market to overcome this problem as the USA doors apparently do not have mid rails,or if they do they are higher than ours. The last Petsafe security door that came with my previous pet door was flexible and though made of metal which bent slightly to overcome this problem. It was not easy to fit but could be done. These latest models cannot be bent at all as they are moulded plastic. So be aware of this and if you think of it in advance you can have the mid rail of your door made higher to allow space for the security pet door beneath to be usable.

We have fitted this to a basic wooden door (saving up for a UPVC door). The issue we had was that this was designed for a thicker modern standard door and ours was too thin so I had to make a wooden frame for this to fit properly. This is my fault for not reading the description properly and not a fault of the product at all. Now, our dog is a small to medium cocker-spaniel who has total disregard for her own safety and likes to hit the dog-flap at full speed. Our previous dog-flap had a solid door which, simply couldn't cope with the force of our dog exploding into the garden and it wasn't long before the solid plastic flew out into the garden as well. This one has a soft rubber door which hopefully will last much longer whilst being softer on our stupid dog's head. The anti-intruder cover slides on the inside and locks into place is quite solid and sturdy. Unfortunately, it is a neutral grey, which is almost indistinguishable from our average winter sky causing our dog to have a couple of mishaps where she has tried to run through it. So far, she has no identifiable injuries resulting from this but we may have to decorate the cover to prevent any further incidents.

We ordered the XL dog door although we have 2 medium to large Boxers. But now that we have it, i'm glad we didn't order one any smaller. It's perfect for them to go in & out when they like but we can keep the door shut to save cold draughts & wind & rain blowing in. It took a couple of days for them to get used to using it (but one of them is a complete wuss!). But now it's great. I love that it's sturdy, well made aluminium frame doesn't rattle everytime they use it & the flap being soft & rubbery again prevents the off-putting rattling that the plastic ones do. It's easy to keep clean & was relatively easy to install. Our door is multi-panelled & we were worried that it wouldn't fit well but it's fine & still sturdy. My only criticism is that both bottom corner frames were bent outwards creating a dangerously sharp metal point. We have had to hammer them back flat before the dogs cut themselves (or us as it's where the locking panel slides down to the bottom). This was a quality issue on ours i believe as opposed to a design issue on the product.Generally, really pleased with the product & it's an excellent solution for our dogs!

I read most of the negative reviews on this product and still decided to go ahead and purchase one. Most of the reviews seemed to be about the wind blowing the flap open. Mine is still new but seems firm enough and a strong wind hasn't managed to blow it open yet. The construction is very good and when the shutter is in place on the back our cat who I believe could be a distant relative of Houdini can't manage to get out. You can buy replacement flaps. The plastic screws which are provided broke when I was using my power screw driver. I replaced them with metal screws. The cat flap width was slightly too large for our door so I had to fit a type of plastic beeding around the flap to take up the slack which has worked out fine.Whilst I was reading all the reviews on various cat flaps there didn't seem to be a perfect one, but this I feel is probably one of the best out there. It would have been nice if it had a locking device which would locked by itself when the cat was in. Most of the other cat flaps in the past that I have fitted seemed very flimsy, this one feels it will last for ages. I am pleased with my purchase.

Bought this to replace an old Staywell plastic dog flap. This is far superior in every way. It seems to be the same width as the old one, but a little taller (which is useful for Peppa - our boisterous Cocker).Last night was extremely windy and the flap worked a perfectly. I didn't notice any wind coming into the dining room and the magnetic flap seemed to stay in place. The biggest improvement with this is how quiet it is. I remember on many occasions laying in bed and hearing the dog going in and out through the old flap. With the new one I have actually stood in the dining room with the dog next to me and then noticed her being outside having not heard her going through the flap!!It really is that quiet. Honest!!!If I had to find a criticism with this product it would be that the nylon screws supplied with the flap seem to be quite flimsy (I actually broke one when fitting it). However, please don't let this put you off buying a fantastic product, just be careful when tightening the screws. This flap is more expensive than the standard flaps but well worth the extra money. Buy one. You wont regret it.

Unlike other cat flaps I have purchased, this one has a sturdy metal frame. However, I chose this because of the rubbery flap as our cats have experienced difficulties with solid hard plastic flaps and paws getting caught up in the past. The flap is lovely soft opaque rubber that most cats would be strong enough to push and bend. I guess it’s why the manufacturers chose this material. The flap is held vertical by a magnet, similar to a fridge door. Our cat has taken a bit of time learning she needs a bit a initial head weight to push it open but she got there in the end. In my experience, cat flaps are never as easy to fit as the videos would have you believe, so allow a good couple of hours just in case.Like most DIY, it’s down to your experience and no doubt if I was fitting one of these each day I could well have it done in under half an hour. We know somebody who paid £60 to have one fitted and to be honest, if you don’t own a jig-saw, drill and some knee protection that’s not a bad price versus exhaustion. I saw it’s possible to renew rubber flap if it gets worn so let’s see how long this lasts.

HiAfter long reserch I did buy above product. Its more expensiv then other plastic doors but in longer run should be less problematic as some reviews sayed the plastic doors broke down after a year. I instal mine in the wall as I got 2 pair of doors going outside and was faster solution then buying 2 for each door.I was unable to use tample as was next to the corener but insted I use frame to mark where opening should be then cut out in brick whith sds hamer, instalation was easy for diy person like myslef.Product looks and feel very gd.Works nicely and most of times close with no problems, only when dogie go very slow thru frame the magnes dont catch as should. My pupies learn very fast how touse it as I done litte diffrent way then is on insturction,I left my pupies outside then show them new pet door and then leave them outside take them only few minuts to find a way to back to me XD very happy and when 1 used other one just copied XD.funny part is 1 use nose to open and then go thru and other use paw XD so adorable litte pupies.

These doggy/cat doors are fantastic and so much better then the plastic ones that break after a while of your pet running in and out of them. Made from strong metal with a flexible rubber type flap door. It nice and quiet with strong magnets. We have two sizes the medium on the white door and a small on the brown door. One is used for a cupboard we use as there cat litter box room and the other on our bedroom door so our sphynx cats can come and go as they please but with the shutter that comes with it we can shut them out if needs be. Had them for a few months now and are lasting brilliantly! I also love that you can get replacement flaps for them without having to buy a whole new unit.Yes they aren't the cheapest but 1,000% worth it! Easy to install with the instructions and so handy to have a paper template to follow when cutting that you just tape to the door so it doesn't move.I guess the only negative I would give this door is that the screws are plastic. We snapped one when putting in but thankfully the pack came with a spare!
