The fitting instructions were clear and WRITTEN with clear diagrams - not just those series of incomprehensible drawings with symbols alone. The door is quite substantial for its big size and, although it's not a five-minute job, fitted easily in our wooden back door's bottom panel. My only disappointment has been that the spacer pieces, which line the space between the outer and inner frames, (rightly identified by another reviewer as fiddly to fit) are white and stand out like a sore thumb in the brown frame in our brown door.I like the fact that you slot in an opaque plastic panel at night, if you wish, so it's more difficult for a small burglar to get in and, perhaps more importantly,the dog can see that the flap is locked. Our previous flap had side slides to lock it - the position of these were not readable by the dog, with the result that it sometimes used to crash into it when trying to dash outside!We have a porch/small conservatory outside the door so can close and lock the porch doors at night to make the house more secure.This new door was bought to install in our 'new' house for use by our 'new' rescue female Irish racing greyhound. Her last race was only two months before she came to us in England, so we were concerned that a dog not recognised for its intelligence and used to a completely different life style, in kennels and on race tracks, would not even consider that this device was a door. However, after a week or two, starting with inducements, demonstrations, calling, pulling and encouragement, followed by standing outside with her collar and lead clinking when she was inside and really excited to be going out to see some small furry animals, she now will go in and out (extremely carefully!) without problem.Occasionally the flap does not end up completely vertical with the magnets engaged - although I expect a gust of wind would result in complete closure.

My problem was a upvc door that already had a hole, and a very jagged one, badly cut into it for an old dog flap that broke. I made sure I got smething whose dimensions would mean the hole was definitely covered. Everything's fine, except that when I push the "lid" down at night to lock my dog in, if it goes all the way down and clicks into position, the little flaps at the top are too low to push into their slots; so I have to ease the lid down, push the flaps into the slots at the top, and click them in, then make sure the bottom bit has engaged enough - it won't go all the way down to click into position - to hold the door shut. This is actually a minor irritant and probably to do with having no choice in the positioning of the dog flap,over the existing hole, but I mention it as it is well worth checking everything you possibly can before installing! The door is also the wrong width for the "tunnel" pieces to fit in, but that's covered in the instructions. Me, I cut them narrower and narrower until they fit exactly, then fixed them in position with a dab of no more nails. Not quite as pretty as I'd hoped but not to worry. The not-very-thick thickness of the door also meant the screws needed shortening, and it took me a while to find someone with the wherewithal to cut them down to size and finally fix on the little white caps. Anyway, job now done, dog's happy, I'm happy, so, yes...UPDATE: one of the magnets very soon came unstuck. I've still not got around to glueing it back on somehow, so every time its windy and raining, the sole magnet doesn't hold the flap closed and the floor get soaked with rainwater.

Generally well made and (time will tell - but) seemingly quite strong.The fitting of this product would definitely be easier and much less time consuming if the reveals (the plastic parts that are cut to width to fit across from the inner to outer part to cover the edges of newly cut door panel) were either a fraction thicker or the slots they push into were a little narrower so that the reveal actually has to be push fitted into them (and wouldn't fall out of the side they were already in quite so readily, while trying to position the 2nd side - especially when being fitted by one person). That would make a tremendous difference to the hassle factor and time taken! Of course,they can be glued in place on the first side, but the lost time whilst the glue gets really set and hard means there's a lot of time loss whether gluing or trying hard to keep them in place with one hand while manoeuvring or screwing with the other. A nightmare so easily averted - it seems ridiculous that it hasn't been done.For those who can't work it our for themselves - it could be a good idea to say in the fitting details that when fitting where the security is less important (and the ply/wood is thick enough to allow it) it is much easier to simply screw this product in place than to mess about cutting to length and trying to line up the screw headed bolts supplied. In fact, if clutched (security) screws are used they are very nearly as secure anyway.

This may be a dog flap, but it works really well for our large-breed cats. We have Main Coons and as one of the largest breeds, normal cat flaps just aren't big enough. It's easy to train them, the magnetic closure works well, and they do a pretty good job of stopping drafts.We have a steel back door, so fitting required a cutting disk approach. It was easy enough with a my Black & Decker Dremmel style cutter. Drilling all the way through first provided the corners to cut to.We've been through a few of these over the years; the seals are good but eventually fail, and we generally remove the in/out only tabs as we've had cats lock themselves out through messing (I know, tell me about it!).That said, I don't want to suggest that our cats don't give these doors a real pounding, because they do! They run through them at a hundred miles an hour, bat them and that''s in addition to the outside weather.What is really brilliant of PetMate is they they haven't changed the design/form factor - so after 18 years in the property, and three cat (sorry, I mean dog) doors, we can get the same again and not worry about fitting.So, for those that want in-out functionality, these work very well, but if you don't I've found that you can easily prise-off the mechanism. Either way, this door has proven to be very effective.

We got this on Amazon for half the price the pet shops were charging. We previously had a smaller version fitted for our cat and terriers, but needed a bigger door for the new collie pup. This is the perfect size for him and is still light enough for the cat to push open.This dog flap is really robust. One of our dogs (staffy cross, solid boy) charges through the door at speed, and I wouldn't hold it against the product if the flap broke off after a couple of months, but it still functions as well as always after 6 months of abuse and shows no signs of weakness!It comes with a solid plastic cover which slots easily over the door to act as a lock and barrier, making it obvious to your pets they can't get through.Much better than other versions which allow you to lock the flap but your pets don't find out untill they've run into it!You do need a jigsaw and drill to fit this, but minimal DIY skills as the instructions are really clear, and the frame hides any wonky cutting!Do be aware that this door is big enough for a person to get through. I am small and can fit through easily (handy that time I had locked the back door from the inside!) which could be a security issue if the locking panel wasn't fitted.Overall great product which stands up to a lot of use :)

Very happy with this dog door flap. I have a medium sized black Labrador and bought the medium size door first thinking it would be big enough for him. Going by the size chart, it would have been. However, I decided to buy the large size after and sent the medium back again as I felt the large one would give my slightly anxious dog more space to go through. And what a good idea that was.He absolutely loves it and only took around 5 min (with treats of course) to figure it out. My partner helped me to take the door off the hinges and drew the frame on the door (easy when going by the pictures and instructions) I have sawn the hole in myself to try it out and this too was very very easy.He drilled in the holes (easy again) and that was basically it. All we had to do then was to put the door flap in and screw it tight. It seems to keep the draft out well - for now anyway. We have sealed the outside around the flap and along the door just in case and to definitely keep all rain out. It looks very tidy and is of a good strong quality. I’m so glad I have bought this. Would definitely recommend

This is a decent flap, it's easy to install, although it is intended to have screws going into the door, or whatever it is installed in, from both sides (in and outside). My experience is that most flaps have screws that pass through the door and hook up on the other side of the flap, which gives a nice tight connection, drawing both sides together: Screwing in from both sides doesn't give as strong or tight a seal and could lead to the screws hitting each other (the holes in the flap are in the same position inside and out). Also, if you are installing into a panel in a double glazed door, as I was, the screw doesn't grip well at all; so I found some longer screws and went through to the other side of the flap.It is an attractive looking flap, although the locking mechanism is a bit awkward - there are symetrical sliding bits of plastic, two for incoming and two for outgoing. So if you want to lock the flap completely you have to slide 4 bits across and they don't slide particularly well. Overall I think it will work and last OK though.

This is a top quality dog door and is highly recommended. The Medium unit suits my Tibetan Terrier (about 16 inches to the shoulder) well, and the cat is able to use it easily too. It has draft-proofing around the flap, and magnets to hold the flap closed against all but the strongest winds. The flap itself cannot be locked, but there is a separate security panel that slides and locks into place on the inside of the door. This needs to be removed completely and stored elsewhere when not in use. However, installation is not particularly easy! It's crucial that the bolt holes are drilled through at exactly 90-degrees to the door. The final assembly process definitely needs two people (one either side of the door)and it's fiddly to get all the components to align properly before tightening the bolts. You'll need to use masking tape to temporarily hold the lining panels in position as suggested in the instructions. A vice, hacksaw and metal file are required to cut the bolts to length. It's worth the effort though - this is a great product.

I bought my first Dogmate door 14yrs ago and had it installed in a solid panel in the conservatory. For 11 of those years it was used by two energetic Cairn terriers. After I lost them, it has since been used by an equally energetic Staffy X and a Westie. About a year ago, a crack appeared in the door, but it held tight after I taped it. I didn't know at the time that you could get a new door.About a month ago, I had to put the dogs in the garden while a heating engineer visited. Not being used to being kept outside, my dogs proceeded to completely demolish the Dogmate door and frame.As an emergency measure I had to go out to a local pet store and purchase a flimsy replacement at an extortionate price!As soon as I could,I ordered a new Dogmate door and spare door.Why would I do that when the dogs had ripped apart the other one, you ask.Reread the beginning of this review.IT HAD LASTED ME 14yrs!!!In my opinion it is probably the best dog door on the market!Will be buying my third in another 14yrs hopefully!

I had to wait longer than expected for this item to arrive, and then found it was brown, and not the white one I had ordered. When contacted, the seller offered a refund, since the exact item I ordered was not in stock. I decided to keep the brown one, and convinced myself that it created an attractive colour contrast!I ordered this door as a replacement for a Staywell door, which broke a few months after installation. Fortunately, the cutout only had to be increased in height by about 25mm, to suit the new fitting. The manufacturers recommend that the installation be undertaken by two people, which is probably right, though it is possible to fit it alone, as I did, if you take your time.The rubber seal which fits in a groove in the outer frame refuses to stay in place unless held in by a few drops of adhesive, particularly on the corners. Although the overall installation can be a bit frustrating, the finished result is well worth it. This looks and feels like a heavy duty product that is built to last.

Bought one of these dog flaps around 2 and a half years ago and we're still delighted with it. Inexpensive but actually very good quality for the money. Pic shows it a bit grubby (2 cockapoos generate a lot of muddy traffic) but once it's clean it's pretty much like new. Relatively easy to fit - you'll need a jigsaw ideally - the only fiddly bit really was cutting the bolts to the correct length. Other than that, installation was straight-forward. Was initially a bit worried by some of the reviews about the flap opening in the wind - however we've had no problems at all, I can only imagine those who have, must have had doors directly exposed to strong winds. Also unlike for other reviewers,our cockapoos have shown no sign of wanting to chew the surround - again I guess it depends on whether your dog is a chewer. Our dogs have also adapted really well to using the flap, in and out of it all day. Can't imagine not having it - looks like it's been part of the back door forever. Very pleased.

It works. Follow the fitting instructions precisely otherwise panels will not fit together.You need a jigsaw to cut a rectangle in your door, and skill to drill straight holes all the way through at each corner. There is a very small margin for error *. Once fitted it works well, the magnet keeps the door closed at just the right firmness. It appears a bit flimsy, but is made from strong flexible plastic. It is weatherproof as described. Panelled doors require a panel to be filled otherwise there will be a gap at the top.4 instead of 5 stars because the description mentions a security lock. There is a plastic door cover that slots on the inside. It is only useful when you need to lock the dog in or out,but not for security. You have a big hole covered by a piece of plastic, large enough for a small child to get through.* (If the holes are not drilled straight the door will be contorted and the magnets won't line up, so the flap will not shut properly.)

This is brilliant.I had debated between this one and a petsafe one and this one had better reviews and had metal screws vs plastic ones to i took a huge risk. I paid £1200 for a new back door to be fitted soley for the purpose of having a dog flap in it. Mad? yes i know.However, my dog has incontinence and would wake me up about 10 times a night to go to the toilet, and my health was suffering as a result. I got a reputable door company to fit the door, and their fabricator fitted this for me for £50 before the door was installed.It looks amazing. Has saved my sanity and i am now getting 8 hours of sleep a day, something that i had not had for over 5 years.I thought training my dog to use it would be really difficult,but she took to it straight away and now spends most of her time in the garden. I wake up sometimes in the night to use the toilet and she is snoring away on the grass outside.Best thing ive done for ages and ages.Picture attached.

If you came here from the Staywell door, then you've made the right choice. I replaced the draughty, noisy Staywell medium door for the DogMate medium. They are both nearly the same size, so the hole in the door was perfectly covered by DogMate. Plenty of thick trim included - easy to cut to size - and a nice firm seal around the edges. The draft exclusion trim and strong embedded magnet mean the door closes quietly, and stays closed in a gale. No breeze around the edges. The edging seems tough enough for my Jackpom and Pomchi to race through. The dogs aren't able to get at the embedded magnet or chew it, so it's safe for puppies (unlike the staywell brand). It looks tidy and smart,with a slide down cover to stop the dogs getting out overnight or strays getting in. Value for money. Haven't you bought this door yet? You can do it alone, but two people holding it in place can screw the whole thing together in less time than it takes to read this review.

Ordered the medium. I was concerned it would be too big for a Jack Russell puppy but I’m glad we went up a size. It fits really well. Fitting it requires someone reasonably good at DIY. It became apparent that the most important thing was to drill the bolt holes in the correct place, square and parallel to prevent the frame distorting on the other side of the door and fighting the bolts, very difficult with a drill free hand so we purchased a drill frame from amazon, brilliant bit of kit. After that and with care with the jig saw we were able to get a good fit and weren’t fighting the frame with out of position bolt holes. The flap doesn’t fully seal but is adequate for the side passage.The magnet holds the flap in the hole. Really pleased with the installed product just need to teach the dogs to push past the magnet. Happy to go in and out with the flap open. Update the dogs are happily using the flap to go in and out.
