This set of 10CDs contains sixteen original albums by Sammy Davis. Most of these are relatively easy to obtain elsewhere, if you're happy to buy used copies of the Collector's Choice and/or Warner Jazz releases of a while back, although prices are slowly rising on those. However, four albums are worth mentioning as they are harder to find, or have not been released on CD at all.Firstly, we have Here's Looking at You, an album recorded for Decca in 1956 and not previously released on CD. This relies less on well-known standards that his previous albums, although there are still a handful here. This current box being a public domain release,it comes as little surprise that this is transferred from LP and occasionally one can here the odd quiet click but, on the whole, it still sounds very good and despite the cheap price tag of the box, clearly much work has been done to get this sounding as crisp and clear as it does. You'd have to listen very closely to realise the source.Secondly, there is "Belts the Best of Broadway" (try saying that after a tipple or two). Oddly, this was not released in the CCmusic series, presumably because much of it was available on other albums. Indeed, all the songs are available elsewhere but it is nice to have the original album on disc at last.Sammy Davis Jr at Town Hall has been on CD before, but only in Japan, and a used copy is likely to cost you £40-50. The original vinyl was never great-sounding to start with, with the occasional mic-overload and with the "s" sounds distorted. I have never owned the Japanese CD issue, but the tracks from the album featured on the Rhino box didn't manage to correct this. It's not corrected here, either, but again this is probably sounding as good as we could possible hope for considering the original master tapes haven't been consulted. It's never been my favourite Davis live album, as it's clumsily edited and because of the sound issues, but it's great to have it on an affordable CD.Finally, we have Mood to be Wooed, which finds Davis singing accompanied just by the guitar of Mundell Lowe. Again, the Japanese release would set you back three or four times the price of this set. This isn't as good as the similar album with Laurindo Almeida from nearly a decade later, but it is a great album nonetheless, and again it's great to have it on CD. The sounds seems to be to be a bit bass-heavy on this one, but I've never owned the vinyl and so I'm not sure if that had the same problem.So, what you basically get for your £12 are four very hard to find albums on CD plus a dozen others that are already available if you like to shop around. What a set such as this proves quite easily is just maligned Davis has been over the years. He has so often been accused of copying Sinatra's vocal style, and yet it doesn't take much of an investigation of these albums to realise that they don't share much at all within the way they approach a song or performance. Davis has his own style (and one that clearly influenced Bobby Darin). What's more, just as Bobby Darin would when he turned to standards at ATCO in late 1958, Davis tends to make sure each album contains a number of songs that hadn't been recorded by Sinatra at all at the time of release - just to avoid those predictable comparisons. As with Darin, Davis was more than happy to take risks - such as the six minute rendition of It's Alright With Me, the albums of guitar duets, or turning his hand to current hits of the day (as in Big Ones for Young Lovers). In the case of Darin and Davis, sometimes those risks don't pay off, but it's what makes these kinds of artists so exciting to listen to.As usual with series, there is no booklet, just the bare information on the back of each CD. But at this price and the chance to own hard to find Sammy albums on CD, we can hardly complain.
