The first time I gave my baby son a bath I attempted to use the traditional "elbow" technique to gauge the bath temperature. For those not in the know, supposedly you just stick your elbow in the water and when it feels "just right", it's OK for your baby.Well maybe I've just got sensitive elbows, or don't really understand what on earth "just right" is supposed to mean, as first bath time went something like this:1. Fill bath to what I think is correct temperature, stick in elbow. Ouch too hot!2. Pour in some cold water. Stick in elbow. Ouch too hot!3. Pour in some more cold water. Stick in elbow. Still too hot!4. Pour in yet more cold water. Stick in elbow. Hmm, OK maybe.5.Pour in a little more cold water to be on safe side. Lower baby into bath.6. Baby screams head off and starts shivering. Conclusion, bath way too *cold*.So, this being the 21st century, I figured there must be a better way to do this, and after browsing Amazon, I discover this nifty little thermometer. So I added it to my basket, selected first class delivery, and the thermometer arrived just in time for my son's second bath time. This occasion bath time went like this:1. Fill bath to what I think is the correct temperature.2. Examine thermometer, slightly too cold! Pour in some hot water.3. Examine thermometer, 37 degrees exactly. Lower baby into bath.4. Baby visibly relaxes, splashes around, and generally seems to be happy.Fast forward 10 months, the thermometer is still going strong, and bath time is one of my baby's favourite times of the day! Well worth having. Only four stars as the display can be a little slow to update to temperature changes, but still well worth the money, and an excellent purchase!

We have three thermometers at home for our little boy, a Grobag egg, one built into the baby monitor and this Philips one. But it is this Philips one I like the best. The Philips thermometer consists of a good, no-nonsense easily read LCD display showing the temperature. The display is covered with a little plastic circle - which looks like it could scratch - but ours hasn't despite some real rough handling. This is mounted into a good tough rubber flower -- not too soft and not too hard. We're happy to let our little boy chew away on it now that he's teeting. In fact he quite likes playing with it.It gets dropped and thrown but is still going strong and has not discoloured or anything. It seems fully waterproof to test the bath temperature (and is handily marked 37C to remind you want the temperature should be). It is also free-standing for use as a room thermometer. We also threw it in our bags for holiday without worry and used it to check the pool temperature. It seems pretty acurate, I trust it, and it changes its reading quickly. On of the benefits of this one is that it is battery powered, so no having to move leads around like the Grobag one. It goes from room to room with us when necessary. Not sure how long the battery lasts, but some friends have had theirs for four years without having to replace it.We've now had ours for a year, and all in all, I'd highly recommend it.6 May 2014 UPDATE: Just a quick addition to say we've now had this thermometer for six years in constant use and it is still going strong with the original battery.

I'd be lying if I did not say this is one of the best baby buys I have ever made... it gives me peace of mind as I can't tell if the water is hot or cold half the time, especially in the Winter. A little concerned if it is giving inaccurate readings though.... as I tend to bath my toddler at about 39-40 degrees. I am now using this on my second baby. I panic if I misplace it! Having had it for nearly 2 years I have found that mould has grown around the display, at least I am sure it is mould, it won't come off. It is never left in water. It does take a while to adjust the temperature reading and you do need to swill the water around with it to get an accurate reading, you will find it will either go up or down considerably. The thing has to be allowed time to adjust and it is not the thermometers fault if the hot water gathers at one end! The frustrating thing is the fact that it flips upside down ALL the time, it is so annoying, I go to put my baby in, arms full and liking to double check the temperature it has turned upside down and it takes while to read the correct temperature after turning the right way! It certainly prefers to be upside down. I have not used other bath thermometers, I figured an expensive one would be safer, there may be better ones out there, but I have relied on this so heavily and would not be without it.

This bath and room thermometer is brilliant, I am a first time mum, and expecting my baby any day now. My other half very kindly runs me a bath every night and uses the thermometer to make it the perfect temperature for me (no more scolding my feet when getting in) This will completely put my mind at rest when I run my baby's first bath, and it can double up as a bath toy for when the baby is older. Its a lovely design, and looks lovely in the bedroom/nursery as a room thermometer. I was unsure of purchasing this item because of reading the negative reviews, but when my sister-in-law bought it for me as a present, and I tried it for myself, me and my partner are more than happy with it.It doesn't constantly flip over when in the bath, and it gives an accurate reading very quickly. Of course you have to swill the water in the bath before you take a reading, and if the thermometer is in the bath when you swill the water of course its going to flip over! If you use this thermometer properly teamed with common sence you can't go wrong! Its a fab product and if your like me, and a bit of a worrier then its a sound item to have to make life a little easier with a newborn baby!

Compact. Okay design, though not either as overtly child oriented as some or as unobtrusive as others.Has so far given reliable recordings over a range of temperatures. Quickly gets up to temperature when moved from room to water, though takes a while to get back down to room temperature afterwards. This could potentially be an issue if to wanted a guide to what to dress your baby in immediately after a bath.It does float and after a dozen or so uses there is no sign of water getting into it or condensation building up. Also there or no nooks for water to hide in, so it doesn't drip everywhere. The main shortcoming of this thermometer is that the screen is small and lacks a backlight. Therefore in daytime you have to get quite close to read it and at nighttime you have to hold it up to a light. I do think this really lets this down. However it is good value for money, particularly as it can be used in the room and in water unlike some of the other options, and seems to be reliable and accurate.

I bought this one and the ray one. As I couldn't make my mind up. I didn't wait for baby, and hubby and I found it super useful for getting the temp right in our bath too :)The advent one Is more accurate as it's probe is one inch from the top and goes to the nearest degree. But with turn upside down easily when the water is 'disturbed'The ray ones floats on top of the water better so is much easier to read, especially if you have any bubbles as the advent one display wad often under the surface and thus suds. The ray one flashes 'hot' then the temp once the hot 39 is reached. In a larger displayWhereas the advent gives a logo, and is harder to read. Both do the job.But I'm using the advent with my Tippee bath and keeping the ray one for the big bath and us bigger folk. As I prefer the adverts accuracy and with the newborn bath, it doesn't really turn upside down or have many Suds to obscure view and I like the accuracy for my youngster :)

I love this gadget. We have used it nearly every day since our daughter was born and she is now one. We have also bought it as baby presents for friends. Its very useful in the early days when you are not sure how hot or cold the bath water should be. At least when your baby is (inevitably) crying in the bath you know that they are not too hot or cold! It is also very useful as a room thermometer, particularly if your child, like ours, was born in the winter. Its good to know how many blankets they actually need rather than having to guess. Now that my daughter is older she likes the fact that the flower floats around the bath and its certainly stood up to a major amount of chewing!I note that some people have mentioned that their model steams up. This has never happened with ours so I can only suppose that those others are faulty. In my opinion, you won't regret this purchase.

I have used one of these for 3 years now and it is still going strong on the same battery. It has been dropped onto a tiled floor by a toddler more than once and survived thanks presumably to it's rubbery petals! I use it primarily for the bath and find it really helpful when running the water (of course I always check it's not too hot with my hand before putting my child in, just in case).Pros1. robust and child friendly2. small and very portable if going away3. efficient - still using same battery after 3 yearsCons (though they are only minor niggles)1. it flips upside down in the bath quite easily2. it needs a few seconds to register the correct temperature3. if you have a light over the bath, the light reflects on the shiny "screen" and makes it difficult to readIt was a great buy and I would recommend one to any new parent.

I bought this product as I wanted a small room thermometer to take away on our holidays abroad as we don't need to take our baby monitor which has a thermometer on it. The temperature readings match our baby monitor and free cardboard room thermometer so it must be pretty accurate. I haven't used it in the bath as I just test the water with my elbow as shown by the midwife. It stands up well and is a nice colour. It is a good size to pop into my baby change bag too so I can take it out and about to keep an eye on the room temperature when visiting family, which will reassure the grandparents who constantly worry if it's too hot or cold! I chose Amazon as it was a third cheaper than a highstreet store I saw it in.The display screen is fairly small though so if your eyesight is not too good you might want something with a bigger display!

Didn't buy this from Amazon but thought I'd review here anyway. I bought this primarily as a room thermometer so I could gauge the right temperature once my baby son moved into his own room. Does exactly what I need it to do and I haven't found any problems.I like the size (doesn't take up too much room) and have also used it in the bath a few times - it just needs a few seconds to adjust to the temperature and make sure you don't hold the metal sensor at the back while it's in the bath water. Compared the reading with my manual bath temperature sensor and they match. This sits on the changing unit in his room and now my son's a bit older, he likes to chew it while he's getting his nappy changed/dressed for the day.Item has been tested for toy use so perfectly safe for him. Great product in my opinion.

After the mixed reviews on this product I was debating if I should buy it or not but in the end I went for it and I'm so glad I did.I was having my sons baths way to cold which explains the murder screams when I put him in it. Now every bath time is a treat filled with giggles and smiles.have had no problems with it leaking or getting water damaged however I keep it in the water for a few mins to test the temperature then I dry it with a towel and put it back on the side of the bath rather than leaving it wet.Overall I've not had any problems with this product I do however wish you could turn it off as I expect that's why a lot of peoples have broken as it's probably a drained battery. But I think for £12 you can't argue for the reassurance you're not scolding your child.

This is an excellent little thermometer, that can be used just as well in a room or for checking the temperature of the water in a babys bath.It arrives with the batteries already installed and switched on (not a big issue to be honest), but if it has been sitting around in a warehouse somewhere, you will never be too sure how long the batteries will eventually last.Yes it comes with a 2 year guarantee, but if the batteries fail in that time you will need to replace the batteries yourself, again not a big problem... until you read the small print in the enclosed manual that says you need to apply some silicone grease around the battery compartment to seal it after replacing the batteries andPhilips say that once batteries are replaced they no longer guarantee the product.

I wanted a bath and room thermometer and this one fitted the bill, was in-expensive and had good reviews. Here's my verdict;- as a bath thermometer its pretty good, takes about a minute to give a true reading.- The screen is pretty good to read in the bath- I expected it to be bigger, its actually only about 4cm, 4cm, 4cm.- as a room thermometer its fairly easy to read when close but at a glimpse you might struggle. For a dual function thermometer, its pretty good. The temperature is pretty close to others so I'm assuming the digital temperature is accurate.Despite it being a good product, I am left wondering whether this is fine or whether I'd be better having one of the other glowing modelswhich give a clear indication which also doubles up as a night light.

I bought a thermometer in a one pound shop. It was not accurate. Then, I bought this one.If you are planning a thermometer for your baby, it is better to go for a standard product like this one. This is fine and a good value for money. If you can go a mile extra, there is one other variety that glows when it reaches more than a set value. I think its egg shaped thermometer and thats useful too. When you are sleeping and if the room heater raises the temperature, its difficult to switch on the light to check this thermometer. If there is a light indicator, you can quickly verify by seeing the light.Again, buy this only if you have (important and sensitive person in the room, like a new born baby or your elderly parents. Other wise, this is just luxury.

This is our second purchase of this item as the first one gave up it's life after a year/ 1.5y or so. Although we exchanged the batteries we could not get it working again. However, it was so easy and simple to use for both, room and bath water temperature that we went for it again. The Amazon price is a good one, you spend more if you buy it in any highstreet shop! I also tried much cheaper products (from big chain supermarkets) in the meantime but they died in the bath water after the second use so would not recommend them. As I said just bought this thermometer again for baby no. 2 due to arrive shortly! We find it more important for the first year or so to be able to double check on temperatures, thereafter your child will tell you anyway!
