As a Producer Engineer I must admit that I have always been a Neuman U87 user for Vocals. I use both old valve/tube (25years +) versions as well the more modern versions. To compare these Nt-1s to the U87's is cruel I know but I needed to set up a cheaper Studio set up for a colleague and the reviews on these Nt's looked favourable. So I went ahead and bought a couple. Comparison tests between Neuman / AKG 1000 / Rode Nt-1 were done. Comparing to the Neumans the Nt-1s suited female vocals very well, giving warmth when working closely (proximity effect)and mid clarity when driving them hard at distance. Sometimes having a nasal edge to the sound depending on the angle being used at.Additionally they proved themselves to be very good on groups of 'louder' backing vocalists. The nasal sound being advantageous after repositioning the Mics to achieve this. Acoustic Guitars sounded a bit 'thumpy' at the lower end which needed EQ-ing out but mid clarity and top end was very good. When compared to the AKG, the AKG was overall a warmer but slightly crisper sound and I found I had to drive the AKG harder but the sound was natural and smoother. The NT-1 pair set up Overhead on a piano produced a fine and well balanced sound. Mic-ing up both Bass and Lead Guitar amps gave me no problems and favoured well alongside the Neumans. Violins recorded well when working close with, once again a well balanced sound. One slight drawback is that the NT-1s didn't really like working at distance and being flown in the air overhead on Drums, the bottom end response drops off very quickly whilst the mids became slightly muddy. But I must admit I have always preferred a combination of Neumans and very directional AKGs in these situations so a bit of an unfair test really..... O.K. in summary.... I have since bought four of these and they are getting regular use mic-ing up amps both on the live stage and for recording. I have been impressed so far. The price and sonic response/quality is remarkable when you think what I am comparing them to. Give them a try. I was surprisingly pleased.

I am a total newbie to the world of audio recording but have a MacBook Pro, Garage Band 3, Saffire Focusrite interface, the Rode NT1A and a wonderfully soft vocalist- my daughter.I bought the set-up at Christmas (2006) and have to say that it has set the standard:Truly good microphone. It is clear and ever so quiet. Very responsive and well-rounded. Not sure that these terms make sense but I can say that my daughter has a wonderfully clear alto (she is 15 and sounds like a cross between Norah Jones and Katie Melua with a touch of Marilyn Monroe thrown in for good measure) and I can record the raw basic audio onto Garageband without ANY fuss and it sounds good whatever she throws at it.Whatthat means is that the mic is very clear and supportive and does her voice total justice.Use it with a pop filter though- it is hyper responsive as it is a good basic price STUDIO mic. Make sure that you have a decent stand too as it is not the lightest microphone either and it can drag cheapy stands down. Consider accoustics (if using for vocals as it is best for that though I hear tell it is decent for instrument as well) of your recording space too- it does pick up ambient sound in terms of how the voice sounds in diffferent spaces. Basically what you hear in real time is what you get via the mic!Have since tried their S1 (handheld condenser) and am returning it- NOT a PATCH on the NT1A. For a similar price (if not cheaper) the NT1A is the cream of the crop. Am getting a second one to replace the S1 as I will not get anything else!Have fun!

I am absolutely over the moon. £149.99 is a lot of money to be buying luxuries for myself but I saw all the other reviews and before I knew it, I pressed "Buy".This is a pretty amazing piece of equipment and it also comes well packaged so you don't need to worry about it being damaged whilst being shipped. The setup is pretty easy but before you can use it properly you need two additional products: The first being an audio box that has 48V Phantom Power or else the microphone won't work at all, and the second thing being some sort of mic stand for your shock mount. I purchased the Avid M-Audio USB box which was probably the cheapest out there and doesn't lose the quality of the mic.I also purchased the samson MD5 desktop stand which is AMAZING. A lot of cheap stands can't hold the weight of the microphone but this one is completely solid, so I would get that too!.WARNING: For beginners (like myself), you can't just plug it in and expect your vocals to be as great as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry etc. IT WILL sound amazing in the end but you need to have some sort of knowledge with audio mixing and mastering to make your vocals stand out. I have been watching loads of youtube tutorials so get on there and learn some cool stuff!Overall, this is the best thing I have ever bought for myself, since I am such a music lover. You will not be disappointed. So if this is your type of price range for getting a mic, then this is definately for you!!!

This microphone is amazing for any singers or rappers alike. Even commentary and voice overs would be well suited.Like many reviewers note, this phone does have a very crisp sound to it, every little lip smack is heard. Move your tongue and you will hear it. Although, when recording vocals over a beat, this cannot be heard. This microphone is extremely sensitive, and you can record from any distance in front of it and get clear vocals. Too near, and obviously, the lower frequencies will kick in and be exaggerated. Want more treble? Back away further. You can add a lot of compression and still the quality won't decrease because there is no discernible noise. As long as you have a good XLR interface, this microphone will be very capable.Want to connect this to a laptop or desktop computer? I am using this with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo and the quality is amazing. It needs no drivers with Mac OSX either because it is class compliant, which makes it even easier. The included pop filter and shock mount are great too, and are of good quality, as long as you use a good stand. It even comes with a DVD teaching you mic control which is great for new comers! All in all, this mic is amazing. Perfect for anyone looking to get into vocals.

You've probably watched their videos and noticed that the man states that it's the "best microphone on the market", that couldn't be more wrong. Seriously, there is no form of on microphone adjustments that are on the NT2-A, which means you really have to fiddle around with the settings on either your preamp or software. However, that being said, when mixed right, this microphone records some extremely warm and beautiful sounds, seriously. I was amazed at how sensitive the microphone was when it picked my Mum messing with paper downstairs TWO stories in height. It is incredibly sensitive, although, the quality of recording when the microphone is high volume, is poor. As no matter what you do,you get incredibly bad distortion if you just go ever so slightly high, and it completely wrecks the overall quality of the recording. However, all in all, it's a great buy. It will serve you well unless you're planning to be the next huge music producer, even then, it might still do you well.

I decided to add a review here purely on the fact that i have one of these mics and use it in a studio. We have just built a studio with a vocal booth as a band and the plan was to use this microphone in the booth. Let me tell you.. its absolutely fantastic. We all wear headphones in the studio and the guys say that it sounds like im actually in the room with them. Personaly that was one of the things i noticed the minute i plugged it in. The clarity is amazing for such a light microphone. You need 48Volt PHANTOM power to drive this mic. You WILL NOT be disappointed. The sheer quality off this microphone baffles me.The highs can be a bit ear catching if not set right..I have it plugged into aBehringer Eurorack 24 input studio desk with very little gain all EQ's Centred and no effects on and its just so crisp.Shame its not a little bit heavier but.. why should that make a difference.. right?I'm saying no more.. buy it! You won't regret it.

At this price it is definitely a must have microphone. The capsule is identical to those of RODE superior mics. Although it is referred to as an entry level it has everything to compete with more expensive microphones. For this price range it is absolutely a good bargain. I have bought it because I wanted a USB microphone, but after trying many I did not find one which fulfilled my standard requirements. So I decided to buy this and use it with iRig Pro , in this way , I can use it with my iPad for on-the-fly recordings and the quality is simply extraordinary. For this price they send you a very comprehensive set of accessories.

The package includes everything you need: the mic, a dust cover, a pop filter, a microphone cable and a shock mount. An instructional DVD on how to get the best out of your microphone is also included. It might be quite standard for more experienced engineers, however, for someone who is just starting to do some recording, I assume it would be very helpful. The microphone is of fantastic quality and is the best mic I have used for vocals as it has a nice top end to it, but plenty of presence. You can register the microphone online which will upgrade the 1 year warranty to a 10 year warranty.

I bought this microphone along with a Focusrite 2i4 audio interface and I have to say they make a fantastic pair! This microphone is extremely good, especially for the money. Along with the Rode NT1a microphone you are also getting a very, very good shock mount which is all metal, a pop shield (a must for recording vocals), a soft case for the microphone and a high quality male to female XLR cable. If you are looking for a cheap but high quality microphone this really is your best bet. The only thing cheap about this microphone is the price, for real, it truly is a fantastic piece of kit.

Having never purchased a microphone before, and being a bit uncertain about splashing out too much money on one, I went for this one in order to record acoustic guitar and vocals. As an amatuer musician, my requirements are quite basic, but this mic has surpassed my expectations by some distance. Used properly, I'd imagine that this mic is capable of considerably better than I currently get out of it, but even in my very amateur hands, it's more than capable of producing great results. I've got no complaints about it at all - it just works and for the price I paid for it, I'm very happy.

I livestream on Twitch.tv and picked this up back in July along with the Rode boom arm and a Icicle power supply (After running into alot of issues with a Focusrite mixer) I can honestly say it's amazing. This was a upgrade from a Samson Meteor and it's a very noticeable difference.I can't really offer you any technical sides of the review, because i'm abit of a newb with all of this stuff, but if you're looking for something a big step up from a USB microphone, I would absolutely recommend this microphone bundle. Crisp clear voice quality, and it works perfect with my OBS noise gate.

Fantastic build quality and sound. I bought this after reading someone rave about it on the internet - I only do home recording so don't need a really expensive mic, but the review of this are good and the sound quality is rather fantastic. Rich deep tones, and bright highs, this mic is super quite feels and sounds much more expensive. the pop shield is of high quality as it the shock mount. All in all and great peice of kit with quality accessories and a sound quality that almost makes me sound good.

5.1.2011

All in all I'm satisfied with this microphone. The quality of my recordings is high and very clear. I use it for both voiceovers and vocals for songs. It's an improvement in sound quality on the previous one I had and the stand and anti-pop screen that are in the box are very convenient. You don't need to order an additional stand or anti-pop screen like I did. Just order the microphone, it comes with the necessary accessories including a dust protector for the mic.

Great microphone for money considering you get the cage and an xlr lead too. I find it struggles a little with my top notes but my voice is particularly powerful (male tenor) but I'm not up there that often so with care I can work round it, if you are a soprano you may have to think again. All in all a good crystal clear value for money microphone for home studio recording. Very pleased with my purchase!

20.11.2014

Great mic set! Everything is top quality. The mic itself is very quiet and has a good weight to it. Very clear and picks up all dynamics in my voice. Bear in mind that to make anything sound good you need good preamps and probably compression on your voice. There's more to it than !just! the mic. But essentially this is the mic you'd want at the start of your signal chain.
