I opted for this pencil because it is used and recommended by the artist Mark Kistler in his best-selling book, You Can Draw in 30 days. Mark argues that, instead of going out and buying a range of conventional pencils and then having to continually sharpen them, it's far easier and practical to use one of these. Indeed, if you watch his instructional videos, you will see him only using a Pentel to create his terrific sketches. The Pentel P209 has now become my 'go to' drawing and writing implement. I'm forever making notes with it on paper - be it a shopping list, reminders on my wall calendar, filling in crosswords or scribbling down some ideas for song lyrics. One of the pluses is that, unlike a biro, these don't bleed ink - I've ruined a couple of shirts in the past by having a pen in my pocket. So, nowadays, I always have a Pentel on my person (I place a basic plastic biro cap over the sharp end to protect my clothing). In the past, I have tried those 'cheap but cheerful' throw-away mechanical pencils but get irritated by the way the lead is always breaking off with the slightest pressure. These are far more robust and are a pleasure to use. I therefore have no hesitation in recommending the P209.

Bought this to use with the white 0.9mm Prym fabric marking refills from Jaycotts, as I found the Prym Cartridge Pencil a little expensive, but did want a good quality holder to prevent breakage of the 'leads'. This Pentel pencil has turned out to be the perfect choice, as it holds them very securely without the slightest wobble, and the long, thin metal part that surrounds the nib allows for good visibility. I can see this working really well with templates too.The pencil came well packaged in a blister pack, so no surface scratches or anything, and inside the pen itself were six HB leads, which seem great quality, so I'll probably buy another one of these to use with the original leads, and keep this first one with my sewing things. In the flesh, the outer colour is an attractive ochre or mustard rather than a true yellow, but I like it better for it! For a plastic mechanical pencil, it did not look or feel cheap to me, but well made, and there is some grip from the ridges near the tip.I've only done a quick test on fabric so far, but already feel that I can really recommend this pencil and the combination with the Prym refills.

This is a great and hardwearing mechanical pencil. The 9mm lead holds up well and doesn't snap too easily. I use it nearly everyday both to take notes in class and to make notes in books (where I don't like to use pens). The leads feed in smoothly and unlike other mechanical pencils I have used it doesn't jam up. I liked to so much I bought a second one to keep at my work place and one at home so as not to find myself without. A really excellent product.

Great automatic pencil. I bought after reading the recommendations of others, they were not wrong. I have bought quite a few authomatic pencils from a well known trendy retailer and I have always had to throw them out as the led in the pencil would snap off constantly. I was so impressed with the Pental, I bought another, I now have one for home and one for work. I use them everyday and have yet to repurchase more led.

Love this thick version of my favourite mechanical pencil. Pair it with a very soft lead and it'll leave a precise, clean mark on anything from masonry, metals, wood etc.Surprisingly sturdy construction too. Been carrying this around in my overalls for a year and haven't bent the thin metal pipe which the lead protracts through.Well worth a few quid. They'll know you mean business when this gets pulled out.

I have two of these, one in my study and one for my pocket. As an ex Draftsman I have these Pentel pencils in all sizes from the 0.3 up to these 0.9s and I find these with HB leads the most useful for crosswords, note taking and quizes etc. and with the spare long leads in the barrel of the pencil they never run out. This one was bought to replace one I had stolen.

Having found that I a bit heavy handed with 0.5mm leads and that they kept breaking, I decided to buy this 0.9mm pencil. I am very pleased with the product - the extra thickness lead is very strong and hasn't broken once - I also bought a pack of spare leads. The pencil itself is just what I wanted, arrived in 3 days and performs beautifully.

These 0.9mm pencils (with 2B leads plus nice paper - think moleskine) are a joy to draw with. Been using them for 15 or more years. - I have a stash of them so my boys can use them too and I don't worry that I'll be without. Very robust for a propelling pencil. (The versions with rubber finger grips don't last as well.)

Bought this to replace a very expensive Cross pencil that just stopped working. The yellow casing is more mustard than the picture shows but I like the thicker 0.9 mil lead. It's easy to use every day and doesn't break like some thinner leads. The pencil itself is practical and does what it's designed for. Perfect.

These are just the best clutch pencils and the 9mm size is great for writing while travelling as the lead doesn't break. The only downside is that the steel barrel that holds the lead doesn't retract (the lead does of course) and you need to remove from top shirt pocket when driving or you could stab your self!

These are the best pencils especially if you like doing crosswords. We have had Pentel Pencils for years. The two we have are about 20 years old, one is still going strong but mine was playing up feeding the lead so I now have the new one. Wouldn't be without it as the 0.9mm lead is perfect.

I use this with 2B leads. Before I used a .5 pencil, but the slightest pressure resulted in a break. I love the way you can turn these pencils to pick up the sharp edge, or use the flat for fatter lines and shading. More mustard than the photo would suggest, but still hard to lose,

The P209 is a great pencil for drawing. The .9 is wide enough and I use 2B leads. I never have to use a sharpener. One can take the metal clip off to make it lighter and there are refills available for the rubber that is under the metal end cap. A classic design and very reliable.

I have been using the 0.9 mm Pentel 209 since 2004. It is a pleasure to write with especially for taking swift notes during meetings, etc. The advantage of the thicker lead means that it is almost impossible to break the lead. And at the price of £3.79, very economical.

I use pencil and write hard a lot, so this mechanical pencil with this 0.9 thickness is perfect for me.When pressing down hard, it gives a reliable smooth line without breaking or showing any signs of breakage.Recommended for all who use pencil a lot and writes hard.
