These days, if you're a fan of the sport of hockey and video games, you're living the good life. Developers have been upping the ante on their hockey titles far more substantially in the last few years and are really working hard to make their NHL titles better so they can compete with the NFL, NBA, and MLB offerings. One of the main causes for this increase in quality hockey titles is competition--or a sudden appearance thereof. EA's long-running NHL franchise has always been successful, but last year, Sega finally brought out an NHL title worthy of competing with EA's in NHL 2K3. This year, both companies have clearly worked hard at improving their respective games, each trying to get an edge over the other.ESPN NHL Hockey is the latest in Sega's series, and, for all intents and purposes, it is simply one of the best hockey games ever designed. EA's answer to ESPN is NHL 2004, and, in a few fundamental ways, the game actually does manage to beat out the opposition, though ultimately it falls a bit short of being the best overall package. It's still a really great hockey game in its own right, though. If you've ever played any of the EA NHL games, you'll feel pretty well at home with NHL 2004. Most of the basic controls are the same, but there are a couple of welcome additions. Last year's game introduced the concept of right-analog deking, which lets you dodge and weave between defenders by moving the stick however you may need to. Now, you can use the right stick to check players as well. When on defense, simply skate up to the player you wish to check, and then tap the stick in his direction. Depending on how much momentum you've built up, you can either shove the opposing player off the puck, or you can absolutely crush him into the boards. This checking system does take a bit of getting used to, as you have to be pretty precise in picking your directions for a hit. Overall it works very nicely. Of course, you still have the option of using button-based checking as well. The other new addition to NHL 2004's control scheme is two-button passing. With two-button passing, you can either use a standard pass, or you can use a saucer pass to get the puck to one of your teammates. Saucer passing is useful for getting the puck past defenders, as you can lift the puck off the ice and over an opponent's stick. It's a little looser than a standard pass, but, ultimately, it should be. It's really a great addition, especially when you consider how hard standard passing can be. You have to be very precise in your choice of directions and in the level of power you put behind passes, as defenders are very quick to intercept even slightly mistimed or misdirected passes. Saucer passes still require pretty precise timing, but, directionally, you have a bit more freedom.Another aspect that EA greatly endeavored to upgrade in this year's title was the overall grittiness of the sport. They have done just that! NHL 2004 is a brutal game of hockey, through and through, with bone crunching checks and a greatly improved fighting system. The right analog checking really helps in terms of making it a little more free-form and not restricting you to hitting whoever happens to be right next to you. There's more to it than this system, however, as the game features a gaggle of new hitting and checking animations that are superbly realistic. In fact, every time you send a player crashing to the ice or when you get sent there yourself, you definitely feel it.As far as the new fighting system goes, it's easily the best around. Hockey fights are sort of a tough thing to re-create, as most of them usually just involve a couple of wildly thrown punches, teamed with a lot of jersey pulling and falling down. In terms of video game fights, most systems have been a total joke. They usually ape standard fighting games and end up looking like matches between a couple of Rock'em Sock'em Robots. The new fighting system, developed for NHL 2004, emulates realistic hockey fights but without all the falling down.

Having played EA's NHL game for 9 years now and real ice hockey for 11, this is the most realistic game ever. It's harder than ever to place that tackle. But when you do you will crush the guy. Small tackles are easy to make but won't knock him over. Just as in real hockey.Another thing one has to get used to is the poke checking. In previous NHL games the poke check was rather useless. Here it comes in handy for especially defence and forechecking resulting in nice break aways.Skating is realistic too. In most other realeases movement would either be very promt or too slow. In NHL 2004 you get something that feels right.Once again you can crush the windows in NHL. In 2002 it was impossible. Here a nice body check along the boards can result in a cracked window. Nice.Another thing is fighting. You decide when to drop the gloves. If you get to many punches or one really good punch to the head your helmet will fly off. It's an in fight. It looks good. And it's pretty tough to beat the other guy up.And for all of us who loves the football manager games here's good news. NHL 2004 features Dynasty Mode. You're the General Manager of your chosen team and that allows you to control ticket prices, practice, build new facilities, improve coaching staff etc. And as always you can of course trade players. The Dynasty Mode can be played for 20 seasons. And the goal is of course to finish as the number one general manager. To do that you will have to win a bunch of Stanley Cups. And that's tough in this highly realistic game. For those not familiar with the great game of hockey, NHL 2004 includes a number of tutorials that will teach you the basics in offence, defence and strategy. The two first are mostly useful to get accustomed with the controls. But the strategy part is great if you don't know what Umbrella power play is.I could go on and on about the all the great features. But let's keep it at this. Just buy the game, all right.PS. The only thing that ticks me off with this game is that Denmark is not among the National team. For Christ sake! We are in the A-Group. Became B-Group world champions 2 years ago. Can't remember if we tied or won against the US. But Denmark is a nation to be looked after. SO WHY ONN EARTH ARE WE NOT IN THE GAME WHEN COUNTRIES LIKE NORWAY AND JAPAN ARE?????!!!! If any EA Sports programmer reads this. INCLUDE DENMARK IN 2005, please!

I've been playing NHL games for 4 years now. NHL 2004 is by far the best. I've played NHL Hitz, Hitz Pro and ESPN NHL Hockey. No contest. NHL 2004 wins, hands down.Features and graphics-wise, this game has it all. The franchise is as in-depth as ESPN, if not more so, and the create-player is far more complex than Hitz or Hitz Pro.Hell, you even get to changer the type of center line!Every last aspect of the arena is customisable. You can develop players to 100 overall, but the one downside is you have to work up to level five i(in franchise mode) before they become 100. Until then, they work at 94.When it comes to setting player stats, it's much better too. There are many options, but in a sensible way- unlike ESPN which takes 1 hour to complete one player, plus has to save at every minute. One of ESPN'S saves (the most important- season) needs 2235 KB OF YOUR MEMORY CARD.NHL doesn't.HITZ becomes boring after five minutes, and the franchise mode is too easy.NHL isn't.HITZ PRO is a version of the original hits with the minigames removed.NHL is entirely original. The graphics are stunning. Player detail is immense, the crowd looks real. The glass on the side of the rink shatters spectacularly. ESPN- No smashing. HITZ and HITZ PRO- 2-d 2-frame smashing.Neither the HITZ games or ESPN have this much lifespan, electricity or detail.NHL 2004 does.Take it from me, if you buy EA,You buy the best.

I bought this game knowing very little about ice hockey and found out what a fun game it is to play. The gameplay on it is supurb and the fact that you can create your own players and teams means that you and your friends can beat the world.Dynasty mode allows you to become the manager (as well as the players) of an NHL team or a team of your own in NHL. This is a great addition to the game and means that you will be playing this games for hours on end trying to get to thors playoffs. The graphics on this game are good and the options on the replays suburb, meaning you can see how you scored from every angle possible. Also the attention to detail is very well observed and yes if you create your own team your players name do appear on the back of their shirt. The soundtrack for this game is good and not to repetetive, unfortunately this cannot be said for the commentry which is very repetetive and annoying. My advice would be to turn the sound off and put a CD or the radio on.For anyone who has never played, or even watched, an ice hockey game I thoroughly recommend this game as a great introduction to ice hockey. For anyone who has played other ice hockey games you will not be disappointed by this one.

This is awesome! Altho its not something for a newbie, For a well educated ice hockey enthusiast this is a must have. It has superb graphics, A new game mode ( dynasty mode) and now includes 3 leagues from europe altho it doesnt include the uk league. One dissapointment though is the commentry. NHL 2002 AND 2003 had the most hilarious commentry ever. Why they changed the funny man god knows, Maybe its to do with the brand new image. Its alot more serious and previous experience from nhl 2003 i would say is essential. The controls have been altered so all EA Sports games have the same format and these can take some gettin use to. But of course there is the option to change them. The ice breaking from nhl 2000 is back and with the new hitting system nhl 2004 is good addition. Most reviews from nhl 2003 were askin for to be put in. Obviously they listen because thats the major part in dynasty mode. Dynasty mode is over 20 years with the aim to get 1st on the GM rankings( general manager) Although i do have two tips. 1. buy this game! 2. dont be colorado($90 million team salary)What you waiting for? Order it!

Now this is a very good game IndeedLovely tweeks in teh graphics & gameplayThe new Dynasty mode so far seems enjoyable even though I've only played a few games, you deal with many things as General Manager like player & TV contracts, finances, upgrading club facilities & hire new staff from assistant coaches to lawyersHowever my favorite part Is you can create a team, pick out their uniforms, create the stadium & pick the roster to make up the team......So my team are the Houston Evangelions made out of free agents, & you can even add your created team Into the Dynasty modeBut what's more, If you want a break from the American game, 3 new leagues (Germany, Finland & Sweden)have been added to the game to give It the good ol' European feelingA lot more difficult to play than previous games & computer AI Is very Impressive....Overall a great & very enjoyable game ^__^

This game is great fun to play, there is nothing as satisfying as hitting someone a hard shoulder and sending them off the boards through glass and into the crowd. It is fast and furious and the easy access and fast loading menus between games will not test your patience at all. With European leagues added, managerial options, I can't see myself getting bored with this one for a long time. The fights are a great addition and you will find yourself rolling up your sleeves ready to get stuck in, it is always a small consolation to win a fight when you are getting stuffed four - nil.The controls are fantastic, may seem a bit confusing at the start, but once you get a few games under your belt, you will be flying along effortlessly. Buy It.

This game shows the real side of Ice Hockey:The checks, the top-corner wrist shots and the all out power of the National Hockey League. As a keen fan of the other beautiful game, i can easily critisise whether it shows an accurate portrayel of how the game is played. But saying that the guys at EA Games do tend to know what they are on about. The best thing this game offers is the Dynasty Mode which lets you become the great NHL manager. And as a manager you will be able to play for Sir Stanley's great cup.5 stars as this game will keep you cool yet excited. So pick up that puck and play some hockey.

I think that NHL 2004 is the best edition they have released so far but there is no online gaming on the pal version. I did buy the game for this reason only to find it is not included so be warned! apart from the online play the game is still very good hence the 4 out of 5 rating
