Athens 2004 is an entertaining multi-player game that should keep you and your family/friends busy, either against one another, or against the computer. With all the major sporting events you'd expect, some are easy to get to grips with, others not quite so. The graphics are generally very good, and there are some nice touches on the commentary front.Plus points of the game is that there are several different modes of play available, from practicing individual events, to competing in full series like the Decathlon, or even making up your own competitions. Your personal bests are remembered, so you can always go back and attempt to beat your records. With multi-tap capability,up to four people can take part in events simulatenously. Other events, (presumably high jump and some floor exercises) are even compatible with a dance mat! (the mind boggles...)Down sides are that the AI is a bit too easy in some events. I broke the world record of the 100 m without too much trouble. Although, other events are genuinely difficult, and pose a challenge. In particular, the archery is excellent, and you really need to be on your game to beat the computer. Still, I haven't seen any way of making the game harder. There also doesn't seem to be names of individual athelets, so no Thorpedos in the pool, or Kelly Holmes' to beat (if that's possible!).The usual problem with atheltics type games is the arthritis-enducing finger tapping required in longer races, but here it is neatly side-stepped. Here the 800+ m races do not require you to tap, they have a new system using the analogue sticks that makes life (but not the race!) easier... still, some of the swimming events are hard to keep up with.Overall, if you're looking for the ultimate sports sim, this probably isn't it... but if you're looking for loads of events to play against your mates and keep you entertained for ages, then this game is for you.

Having played Konami's Track & Field at the arcades many moons ago, it was nice to revisit the button bashing madness via the PS2. For the sprint and swimming events, the actions are virtually the same; to get RSI in double-quick time, keep playng the 400 metres! For the kids, this may be a bit too much for them and may get fed up pretty quickly. As a new user, I just can't get to grips yet with the discus and the men's gymastics, especially the rings and the floor exercise. The women's equivalent is a bit like the Pop Idol game where you press the arrow keys to match the display on screen.I'd like to have seen the hammer throw included as that was quite addictive on the Gameboy version of Track & Field. The foreground graphics are very good; try to ignore the spectators. The commentary does have a novelty value for about 5 minutes, but you'll soon tire of it.As yet I haven't tried the dance mat controls which is a novel take on the button bashing and is probably best played with a few mates and a few beers!!On the whole, I'd give the game a silver medal. Perhaps when I've won the discus and some gym elements, then I may reconsider! If you are a competitive person then trying to beat your personal bests and the world records is a good incentive to keep playing this and is a nice trip back in time for us 40-somethings who fed the slots with numerous 10 pence pieces along the seafront. You will need nimble fingers for a good proportion of the 25 events and, as with all games but especially this one, I would advise not playing it for hours as this can play havoc with your fingers after a while.

This is a good fun game. I quite liked International Track and Field for playstation. Then was let down by Sydney 2000. Athens 2004 is a big improvment though. The graphics are not like Need for Speed or Burnout but that doesn't matter in this kind of game. It's wether they've captured Athens well enough. They have done well and have made it a challenge. There is 25 events including most of the track (not 5000m or above) events. It's got the field events but shockingly not the hammer. It's got loads more different kind of events though. It has not got some events though. It hasnt got diving, some of the gymnastics, rowing and caneoing. There is new ones though including, show jumping, butterfly, backstoke and breastroke. It tires you out a bit and on some the events like discus, the controls are wierd and hard to get even once you've read the 'how to play'.Compete in single player and multiplayer. Try a heptathlon or decathlon. Or do a 13+ event challenge. Just do a single event and go for gold. It's got many modes to do the events on. You've got loads of events to choose from so have a go, but can you get a gold and be the best??Overall it is a great game but i don't get why it left out a few events. You can't just really do all the others and leave 3 or 4 out. If it had all the events it would of got a gold (5/5).If you liked International track and field or Sydney 2004 then I recommend you buy this.

Like TDruce below, I too have, on occasion, run the 800m. Yes folks, I know what it's REALLY like to run two laps of a field wearing just (as we call them in the business) a T-shirt, some shorts and a pair of training shoes. I also have experience of throwing a real-life discus, jumping over some real-life hurdles and even swimming in a real-life swimming pool. With this experience under my metaphorical belt, I can categorically confirm that it has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on whether Athens 2004 is a good game. Indeed, even if Steve Cram were to come on here and post his review of the game based solely on his experience on the real-life track, I would think it unlikely his review would be much help.Running is, afterall, just running. Whereas Jenson Button would no doubt be able to point out the relative realism of a car game, Steve Cram just runs. How accurately can that be recreated?!No, the proof of this particular pudding is in the PS2 tasting. And it tastes jolly good, thanks. Good enough to ask for seconds even if you're feeling full. And yes, you do have to press buttons and twiddle joysticks. And no, putting on your trainers and going outside to run around will not help your performance in the game one bit. But if you're looking for a fun, well-designed SIMULATION that tests your hand-eye co-ordination in a thoroughly entertaining manner, then this could well be the game for you.

We are all enjoying this playstation 2 game. OK..so we needed 4 controllers to get the most out of it...so we could all race each other...buts that fine. Its fun for single record breaking attempts too. Its great to be a top athelete taking part in the pole vault, 110 metre hurdles or 1500 metres (tactics as important as speed)and to see yourself on the podium at the end being presented with an olympic gold medal and your nation's flag being hoisted. The male members of the family tend to keep quiet when they break the WOMENs records though! Super fun for the whole family with different skills needed for each event. Remembering to breathe is difficult in the swimming!!!Wonderful graphics...commentary from top commentators such as Stuart Storey. Fantastic ability to keep all world and olympic records clearly catalogued for easy retreival. The replays of races are good so you can learn how to do better next time......a fantastic present for your children that Mum and Dad can play too.....after a while the kids don't get a look in!...Highly recommended....good to learn about each event which makes our interest even greater in the REAL Athens 2004 events...the crowds cheer you when you do well and competitors respond by looking happy or sad and waving to their supporters which adds to the game's atmosphere.

At last, a new athletics game for PS2. After what seemed like forever with only ESPN's spartan Track & Field to fly the flag for the genre, along comes Eurocom's take on the Olympics with a veritable feast of events. Half of these are athletics based, but that's what we watch the Olympics for right? Others include swimming, shooting, gymnastics and equestrian. Most of these hit the mark with the only possible exceptions being Weighlifting and Skeet Shooting Maybe they could have been sidelined in favour of more original sports such as Judo or Fencing. The controls are varied enough and pitched at the just the right level that you'll be acheiving Olympic and World records before too long. There are several competition modes including Decathlon and Heptathlon and a wealth of countries to play as. The fun really starts however, when you throw in a multitap and a few friends and see just how competitive you can really get.Whilst the graphics don't seem as polished as we might have hoped they're still good enough not to take the shine off a fine game and the AI of the computer opponents is also much improved over previous offerings. This is one that should definitely bein any true sports fan's collection.

Sorry for the corny title couldn't help it.Athens 2004 is a very good game, the amount of events you can take part in is pretty impressive. Anything from running, javelin, discuss, swimming, gym + lots more. Good all round game, will provide hours of fun or misery depending on yourself.Pro's*Plenty of events*Easy controls*create your own event list*Good loading time*Dance mat Compatable (burn those calories)Con's*Graphics aren't brillant i get the feeling it was rushed(could definately improve)*Easy controls BUT its a button basher(played non stop you'll have blisters)*Lose appeal if played for long*My saves seem to delete? or won't save properly?(maybe thats my console)Anyway..good game i can't really compare to other sporting games i haven't got any, it will provide fun for a few hours, but the button bashing gets boring not to mention it hurts, all athletic fans go buy it, for newcomers maybe rent first.Would be better on more consoles, plus better graphics would make it a five star!

I have to disagree strongly with the negative comment below. I've managed to play this game earlier in the week and there plenty of fun to be had. It's not just button bashing - Discuss has you rotating the analogue stick to power your throw (which is not difficult or boring) and the equestrian has you sterring a horse with both analogue sticks. oh, and the archery is really cool too! Every one of the 25 events in the game may not appeal to everyone but at least there's plenty to choose from. I'm not a real 800m runner but at least I can be in this game.I was really looking forward to the Sydney 2000 video game on playstion one and found it to be a great dissapointment.I think that Athens 2004 has captured the Olympic games really well this time. The game even lets you play it with a dance matt against friends, so you can acutally run the 100m if you're up for it!Great fun, great graphics and great atmosphere. Good singleplayer, even better against 4 friends.

This game brings back all the old memories of track and field. Obviously, my historical training of "button bashing" has not been of waste. My wife struggles to keep up, in fact she has to resort to banned substances such as a cloth to cover her fingers to prevent fingerprint burn! Despite this we laugh and find the game very enjoyable.Certain problems arise in multiplayer mode such as the 110m hurdles - the camera looks from the front which is fine as long as you havent fallen over at the start at which point all you can see is a dot in the distance clattering over hurdles? Its not all button bashing - (thankfully the 1500m and 800m do not require any bashing at all)- the Archery and the discus uses the rotation of the stick to play.Great fun and worth buying while the Olympics is on Telly - My slight grudge is that I dont think I will ever jump further than 9.28m in the long jump - if there was wind assistance it would add so much more.

What makes this game absolutely great fun is a multitap , four friends, and a few beers. When i first heard that an olympics game of anthens is coming out i couldnt wait to get it , then when i did get it , i turned it the ps2 on popped the disc in and had a go. After about an hour it kind of got a bit boring and i was nailing all the world records or very close to them (except for discus cus that is insanely hard to do). So i got some mates over and had a few beers then started playing again and we had such laugh.Basically what im tryin to say if you want a game to play with mates then this is the way to go cus you ll have such great fun.

Athens 2004 is a pretty good game. With four different Arcade modes, and eight different competition modes, you can play this multi-player as well.Although the graphics arn't as good as they could be, they're still ok. There's something to suit everyone, I think, although not all of the events are quite as enjoyable. The events vary in difficulty, some being well easy, and others being, like, impossible and I'm sat there thinking - How the heck is anyone supposed to get gold in this?Anyway, overall, it's a good game, and, (for the price on amazon anyway) good value for your money.P.s DON'T GET THIS GAME IF YOU HATE SPORT! :)

29.11.2005

We have had hours of fun with this game. And we do not find it boring after some time. We change our nation every time, just to see the weightlifters. A good laugh every time. I have found the solution to the button-bashing. I use a teaspoon, rather than my nails. You can get pretty good speed by running the spoon over the X and O buttons. It also makes it easyer to breathe while swimming. Only the horse-jumping and the hurdles are quite tricky. But you can still get on the podium even if you fail in those events. All and all a good game with pretty good graphics. Only the danish commentator is a bit of a plum!!!

This will be one of the best games you have bought, ok , I bought mine when it first came out so it was a lot more popular, it still is though!-Graffics - very very good-Hours of fun, loads of diffirent sports to play ( the only hard and fustrating onces are swimming, weight lifting and discus and ok I will be honest it could do with a few more)- Really good quality and the surrounding and stuff are good such as audiance, sounds of them etcI played bejing the next one for xbox (its exactly the same!!) so there no need to buy other and I still have mine, working fine and I had it for nearly 6 years!Buy

at last!! a new athletics game. this game has gone to the next level compared to recent athletics games i.e. "Track and Field" and has taken a realistic approach to modern olympic events. the graphics are great and times are more realistic. for example on "track and Field" on ps1 i would do the 100m in 6.5secs but on "athens 2004" my P.B. is 9.77secs. i know the controls may not be ideal for most people out there, but when you can master the technique of thrashing the 2 buttons, believe me the fun never stops, as they say in the olympics.....its not the winning that matters....its the taking part that counts

27.9.2004

Athens 2004 is a good game. Good as it's not just all button bashing (well not all). But the other sports, such as swimming, need timing pulled off for you to win. (and gee is Butterfly tough!). Pretty smooth graphics, and nice crowd effects make it fun.Of course it's better when playing against mates, but Decathlon is great, and also you can customise events as well; or choose to run in the Athletics! All your records get saved, and you'll want to beat them again.Best track and field game on console yet.
