I bought this rucksack about 2 months ago and since then have used it on bike commutes and 2 trips of a few days abroad, both involving a lot of walking/hiking. Firstly the material has a techie waxed canvas feeling and seems rugged. In fact the whole bag is well made and attention to details is great. The aluminium buckles are a great detail, no plastic here. The shoulder straps are well padded enough for hours of walking with a laden pack, in fact any discomfort will probably be from you overloading it or wearing wrong shoes for walking/hiking, the pack is very comfortable. The top carrying handle came in very useful at airport queues to carry every few seconds as the line moves forward.I found it water resistant and held out well in showers but unsure in a long downpour. The laptop sleeve is excellent and so is the smaller 'hidden' pocket on the other side. The front pocket is very useful for items you need to access more often. However as can be expected in roll tops, the main compartment having one opening means you will sometimes have to empty stuff to reach items from the bottom. It has nice bright yellow organisation section for tablet, glasses etc. The side pockets are great for water bottle, very deep and will take most bigger bottles. There are attachment loops and buckles for trekking poles and maybe tripods and sport mats. Overall, a nice 'old world' look to the design and stands out from the everyday myriad of typical backpack designs out there. Also, bigup to Millican for their environmentally-aware approach in materials. Price is a bit high (£130) but overall this is a quality piece of kit that should look better with age and last a long time.

So, there's a review that's been copy-pasted on all the Millican bags saying it's a thief's dream--it's not. This bag has handy, easy talon clasps, but they're fiddly if you're not used to them, making them a less tempting target for a pickpocket. Also, any thief looking to nab your stuff is going to have to unroll the top to get into the bag. Use common sense, and the Smith is reliable friend. it also closes tightly and holds your items securely--no worries there. This bag holds a lot without being unwieldy or huge. I'm 5'4" and was worried about the size on my back, but this bag is comfortable and fits me really well. I stuffed a hoodie, 4kgs worth of books, laptop, tablet, and two coffee flasks and it was ready for even more. Even stuffed, this bag is comfortable and easy to carry and the rigid back panel, far from being stiff and uncomfortable, keeps you from slouching against the bag--improving your posture and making the load easier to bear.Really, my only complaint is that NONE of the colors appear anything like the images shown online in real life. I'm a professional photographer and photo editor--I know all about variations in screen calibration and how colors may vary in manufacturing, but the dark red shown here is really very brown in person and looks kind of like dried blood. This is not totally unexpected as the color name is "Rust", but none of the images really get across the true color. The same with the Slate--a blue-tinted charcoal-- and the tarn--a medium, steely blue rather than sky.
