Since recently having treatment on my spine, I've had to seriously look at the weight of the gear I'm carrying and downsizing where appropriate. I have an old Manfrotto 679b Monopod which although an excellent piece of kit, is now too large and heavy for me to carry around all day, so I started to look for a replacement that was just as, a) strong & sturdy, b) reasonably lightweight, c) portable and d) reasonably priced. Enter the Manfrotto Xpro Photo 5 Section Aluminium Monopod. This really is a superb piece of kit. The snap locks are firm but easy to use and when fully extended to it's nearly 6' height it remains sturdy, with no movement in the legs whatsoever. This is due to the new design of legs that Manfrotto have recently introduced, whereby each leg is "D" shaped for extra strength. The Xpro Photo 5 Section Aluminium Monopod has no difficulty holding my Nikon D300s plus battery grip and 70-300 lens attached, with no sign of slippage from the leg locks at all. When collapsed for transportation, the whole thing measures in at just 41cm, which is small enough to either carry in the hand or strapped to a bag or backpack. The Manfrotto Xpro Photo 5 Section Aluminium Monopod also has a newly designed rubber grip which provides a sure hold and is streets ahead of those made from neoprene. A set of feet can also be attached to the base of this monopod if so desired. My only gripe with this monopod, and it's not actually a fault, is that Manfrotto don't supply a carry bag with it. Overall I'm very impressed with this monopod and have no hesitation in recommending it to others. 10/10 once again for Manfrotto.

Heavier weight monopod - 600gr. However this is designed to have the fluid tech foot (400gr) attached converting it for video purposes. This puts up the weight and by the time one has a fluid head combined it then becomes even heavier. I paired it with a fluid head - 790gr and found the combination at 1.8kg too heavy for me. I am 78 and cannot get around as much. I returned the head. The unit, used as a straight photo monopod with a ball head - Manfrotto medium with RC2 plate, seems ideal for my purpose but unless the intention is purely for video the total weight would be as much as a tripod unit. The first monopod received had a loose bottom flip catch when in the open position and when tightened would not close. This looks like a design fault. Amazon sent a replacement which was the same. Hopefully this will not affect longevity. The monopod is high quality and should last a long time - pity no bag is supplied. Sirui supply them so why not Manfrotto. The 3/8th/1/4 screw is clever as being combined easily fits to whatever head is used or even straight to the camera. On the Sirui for example one has to unscrew the plate and invert the screw. Manfrotto is much quicker. Also the hand strap turns freely on its axis.

I've been using a £20.00 monopod bought from Amazon several years ago, but the plastic construction of the head has had me a little concerned now that I have some bigger lenses. So, I took the plunge recently and bought this offering by Manfrotto. This is a typical quality product from Manfrotto. Well built with very strong clips to secure each section as you extend them, and a reassuringly robust handle. I have the 234RC head that I use with this monopod, which I cannot recommend highly enough as it secures to the monopod very tightly, and the quick release plate (with lock) makes the monopod so much easier to use. The head is also metal, so is built like a tank. I use my monopod to steady my Sigma 70-200 F2.8,and Sigma 150-600C lenses, and this does a great job.Sure, this monopod is not the cheapest, but when you consider that you have quite a few hundred pounds worth of camera and lens sitting on it, would you feel comfortable trusting a much cheaper but less strong monopod? Choice is yours. I didn't get my monopod from Amazon, but from a local camera shop which prices this at £49.

Manfrotto make class products, and this is no exception. It feels really strong and stable, no flex at bottom, the leg catches lock down tightly and there is a safety strap. Head and bag not included: you can also buy a tri-stand base with fluid movement capacity for video. The unit is 63 inches tall without head/camera, accepts up to 10kg load, so fine for head plus large DSLR. Weight is 1.54 pounds. Closedown length is approximately 2 ft.The platform is fitted wih a dual 1/4 - 3/8 screw for attaching either the camera directly or a head. On the leg is a little allen key for tightening the locks if needed.Avoid cheapo supports; most break in due course and often allow fkexing which can cause camera blur.A reliable head is also vital; if using quick release platforms, make sure they fit absolutely tightly. Manfrotto have a range of excellent heads.

Its quite heavy I doubt it would ever be allowed on as hand baggage as it would be viewed as a weapon. Its also quite long at about 75cm, it requires a head if not used with a 360 degree camera, the mounting screw is large for a mount, however it is sprung loaded so that a standard camera will fit when the outer fitting is depressed. It also rattles as the 'tripod' part actually inverts into the base of the monopod and the three legs rattle about. It blew over in a park when fully extended, it wasn't particularly windy. I was behind a tree as I don't really want to feature in my 360 degree. Would I personally buy it again? Yes, only because it performs a unique function I require. If I was buying a monopod to use as just a monopod I would look at a different model.

Good, solid, but surprisingly lightweight monopod. Loving it all ready, and should be great for when I don't fancy lugging my Manfrotto 190 Xpro tripod around in the wilds.I'd definitely recommend getting the fluid base For this as well.If you're planning to fit a 323 quick release, as I was, then the bolt head washer will hit the top plate of the monopod before it's on tight. I decided to linish 1mm all the way around the monopod's plate to allow the 323 to sit flush. Any more that this would expose the plastic webbing on the underside of the monopod's plate

I use this monopod for sports photography which has significantly improved the length of time I can remain in shooting position, concentration, take tac-sharp images and I look good doing it too! It take only seconds to expand and retract the monopod which is rock solid in sturdiness. I love the fluid foot which offers stability yet with movement at will. I attach the monopod to my Think Tank waist belt using a waist belt bottle holder detachable clip! The monopod seems pricey for a telescopic 'stick' but once used, you really appreciate the value. I love it!!

Sturdy, and beautifully made. The screw in the platform is the larger one a 1/4 inch, which takes ball heads. If you press down on it with your camera screw socket, the monopod screw goes down, revealing the standard screw for cameras. I have tried a Velbon head which is great, but makes for a big package. Will try it out as is, and may purchase a Manfrotto head. It is now evening here -- roll on morning, so I can go out and try ot this Manfrotto monopod!

Really excellent piece of kit. I bought the fluid head to go on top for video, but also put a normal head on it, and you can get away using this as a tripod in places where tripods are not allowed (in certain areas of cities etc) for long exposure photos

I put off getting a monopod for years, I always thought they wouldn’t keep the camera sturdy enough, I was wrong! This has been my go to stabiliser since it arrived for both photography and video, highly recommend and at a decent price too

5.8.2018

Excellent bit of kit. Very light but sturdy. The clamps work well and are much better than fiddling about with screw type clamps. Has a good height and, because of the clamps, it is quickly adjustable. Cost a lot but glad I bought it.

It’s as great from a quality perspective as you’d expect from Manfrotto but it’s a little bigger than expected and doesn’t pack down as short as I wanted. Perhaps the aluminum version would have been better for my needs. ??‍♀️

30.1.2018

Super strong, super sturdy and man enough to hold my fully gripped 7d and (heavy) telephoto lenses ( 100 - 400, 28 - 300 and 500 prime). Awesome monopod and highly recommended to all sports, wildlife and bird photographers

6.9.2017

Excellent, high quality. Would be nice if it could be freestanding with pro dslr and pro lenses but it's great. I use it to increase stability and reduce fatigue when shooting with a 70-200 all day.

Expensive but worth the money. Add a fluid tripod foot and a fluid compact head (all bt Manfrotto) and it’s better than perfect.
