I always write my reviews after i have used the equipment concerned for several months.How can you unwrap something then write a review? The problem is people do! As anybody will tell you a tripod is better than a Monopod in all circumstances,this is a fact regardless,anybody who says different hasn't used both and i would actually doubt as being a photographer of any useful experience.HOWEVER there are times when it would be anti social,not accepted,not practical etc to use a Tripod-This is where the Monopod comes into its own,and certainly will allow you to get shots you certainly wouldn't without one.This comes into play when using longer lenses at cramped events,or just on a walkabout,onholiday etc,it can easily be stowed in a bag due to its compact dimensions.Talking of dimensions,if travelling or back packing etc go for the 5 section version as i did,it makes no difference to the stability.The quality & finish of this is superb,and having used twist locks and these manfrotto over centre type cantilever locks I 100 percent prefer these lever locks,with the twist locks you have NO visual indication you have left one loose!Which on a tripod could cost you dearly ! Use this with the smaller Ball head or the Manfrotto Tilting quick release head-which i actually prefer,its easier to quickly set up!However for using the camera vertically you will have to use a ball head.I very highly recommend buying the rubber cup/spike foot for this,it increases the versatility.Alot of people use Monopods completely wrong,they usually have the Monopod foot between their own feet,and usually will tell everybody Monopods don't work! Always put the Monopod foot a good couple of feet or more in front of your own feet,which you will have spread slightly,you will have your elbows tucked in and braced,and in effect you have made your own tripod! Using a monopod like this will get excellent results with longer lenses.Monopods do work and are an invaluable addition to any photographers equipment.I cannot no matter how hard i think find any negative,Oh yes I can! Manfrotto should include a nice pouch to carry it in!

Monopods have a unique role to play in photography. You can use them in situations where you simply cannot use a tripod. I do a lot of insect photography and with a tripod you are limited to the edges of paths. My old monopod was past its sell by date and so I decided to buy the Manfrotto 695CX 5 section monopod. I chose that because it is very compact and light. Due to late delivery of the head that I ordered I bought the Manfrotto mini ball head 494RC2 as an interim measure. I wondered how this combination would work because I am not a massive fan of ball heads. I also use professional gear that is quite heavy. The combination works like a dream. The monopod is very quick to adjust and get into position.The ball head has a friction adjuster on it and I found that I could angle the camera easily despite the weight.The image results have been outstanding. Okay it is not as stable as a good tripod but I have managed to get razor sharp images in difficult situations with the minimum of fuss. Speed of adjustment is critical before insects fly away and this monopod works like a dream. I did order the standard monopod quick release head but having used the mini ball head I might just keep that on it. I have found the two to be a very good combination and they add more flexibility than the basic head.The only downside I think is the rubber foot that comes with the monopod. It does not look too robust and there is no retractable spike, so I have ordered the Manfrotto 116SP1 foot to add to it.This is a really great monopod. It is light, compact and versatile. You cannot go wrong buying it if you want a monopod.
