Well I've had this game for a few weeks now and I have to say I've been pretty impressed. I knew the basics of American Football when I started playing this as I'm quite a fan of the sport and I'd say that Madden has made me enjoy the sport even more.As has been mentioned by previous reviewers, don't be put off if you don't know anything about American Football as the game has a "Football 101" section where you can learn the basics. After that the next stop is the control tutorials which explain how to perform basic moves, let you try them out and then apply them to a situation to see how they work on screen. These work well and after a while I managed to pick up most of the controls. It should be said here that if you want to play a very easy version of the game for fun with someone who's never played you can disconnect the Nunchuck and play the "Family" version where the computer does a reasonable job of taking over some of the functions so you can focus on other things. However I do have 2 gripes about the controls: 1. As mentioned by someone previously in the heat of a game the Nunchuck running controls for power move (push the remote forward) and stiff arm (flick the remote to one side) are easy to mix up but I've often found this tends to happen when I make large, dramatic movements. Often a simple flick of the wrist results in the correct move so maybe it's just me getting over-excited.2. A lot of the advanced controls which I've started to use now I know the game better are not listed in the manual, for example how to pinch or spread your offensive line and other things like this. I've also yet to find a full list on the Internet so I might try to draw one up. Some experimentation in Practice mode may give these up but it is whether you want to spend the time. This can be important on defense when choosing your own formations and you sudden realise you've got it wrong as you can commit to a different defense just after the snap, which can save you yards. Despite these small problems the controls are intuitive and you'll soon find yourself performing them without thinking to pick up some extra yards or that difficult catch. The menu structure work well and the graphics and player models are all fine so not much else to be said there. As a result of all the above the gameplay is good. At the moment my housemates and I are having a little madden tournament against each other and the multiplayer aspect of the game is great. You can play against each other or the CPU as and when you desire using all your favorite NFL teams. 2 on 2 matches are definitely to be recommended as we've found this to be the most fun for all of us, there's nothing more satisfying than running through a player controlled by a friend on your way to a touchdown. There is also the option to play online, I haven't tried this yet but I've heard good things from a few people i know who do play online regularly. On the single player side there's the franchise mode where you can chose any NFL team to play a number of seasons as from preseason training which you can use to up your player's stats through to the Super Bowl. This game mode is a great challenge (I'm currently playing the Baltimore Ravens) and is quite addictive. Another purists gripe here but as far as I know EA hasn't updated the rosters since the game was released and there have been some trades in the NFL. However I think a dedicated soul has done an updated roster for the game and has posted it on his online profile so if you want to find the latest team rosters you can. There is also the Superstar mode where you control a single player, either of your own creation or from the '07 class, on and off the field as you try to make it into the Hall of Fame. I'll be honest here and say I haven't tried this yet but that's the next project after I finish my Franchise season.Of course there's also the opportunity to play a single match if you fancy practicing a new move or tactic you've mastered against the computer before unleashing it on your unsuspecting friends in your next game. Also in a slightly related note, an online search for this game will yield some good guides for the game with team stats, suggested plays and formations and further tutorials on aspects of the game. I'd recommend these too if you fancy getting some different tactics to use against your friends etc.So all in all I think Madden 08 is one of the best games out and the Wii at the moment in terms of sports games. It uses the available control of the Wii well, looks fine and is great fun as a single player or multiplayer game. What more could you want?D

I have been playing madden games on and off since the first madden game on my brother in laws Sega Mega-Drive although it is only since about 2001 that i really knew anything about american football and was able to really play them properly. After i learnt the rules and started watching the real thing on tele I was hooked. Madden games stopped being random but fun and started being truly great entertainment.Madden 08 has football 101 to teach people the rules and basics of the game from scratch so people that dont know their RG's from their LOLB's can still get the game and learn to play it well.In previous incarnations and in Madden 08 on other platforms you have to remember which button is which for things like Juking, spinning and stiff arming while trying to break a big run with your star half back, with Madden 08 on the Wii you juke by flicking the nunchuck left or right and Stiff arm by doing the same with the remote so when you are in 3rd and short and need to beat this next defender to move the chains the pressure situation wont make you forget which of the buttons to hit you flick your wrist like its second nature and avoid the tackle before heading for the first down and maybe even a touchdown! The controls for passing are just as easy - flick the remote forward to pass the speed you flick it determines the type of pass. on defence a flick of the remote will have your cornerback swat the ball away and raising both hands will make him go for an interception. This game is so easy to control with the freemotion controls all you have to do is enjoy it!As always there is a plethora of game modes to choose from. Franchise mode is back where you play through seasons with a team of your choice (or use the fantasy draft to mix things up a bit) the NFL superstar mode lets you either create a rookie to play through the game as or you can choose one of the 07' draft picks from real life. In either case you can only control your persona when they are on the field and will build influence for doing well.this game has it all, great gamplay good graphics and smooth animations combined with ease of play, everyone should try it and gridiron fans should buy a Wii to experience it at its best!

I did not know much about american football before I got this game however it got good reviews and looked good so I got it and I'm glad I did. The game has a very good tutorial section which teaches you the basic controls aswell as the rules if you don't know then. The controls are very simple with a jerk back on the remote to snap the ball. Throwing the ball is much like wii sports baseball with a soft throw giving a lob pass. When running if you move the remote to the side it hands off defenders. However this is tempremental and sometines results in a powermove rather then a sidestep. Moving the nunchuck makes you perform a sidestep and the B is sprint.Catching is difficult and the low big hit rarely works well. The game modes are very good though. In franchise you control any team through many seasons. You decide all plays and can change which player you are throughout the play. You also can control ticket prices but I have never found the reason to do this.Superstar (Hall of fame) mode is however the best. You create a player for any position. You are drafted into a random team and play your position in that team. However the plays are automatically picked and you only play the plays your player is involved in. This means if you pick the HB you may only feature in the 1st and 2nd down and some games you may only get 5 carries. You can opt to play the game when you are not in the play. However if you let the CPU do it the game is accelerated. It would get 5 stars but a couple of controls are tempremental.

This was my first Madden game, after a brief rental of Madden 07 (PS2) from a video store. The use the game makes of the motion system is great. Different ways of passing based on different swinging actions. Swing up to kick. Flick up to snap. Move nunchuck or controller left/right/back/front to execute running manouevres. Great stuff.Although the weapons system is not as well developed as the PS3/Xbox 360 versions (e.g. no smart quarterback), and the graphics aren't necessarily as good, this is still a very strong game. In two years of playing it, I have had three, maybe four freezes, and so many hours of fun. The difficulty modes are graded quite well, i.e. Rookie is quite hard until you master that, then Pro is a suitable step up from that etc.PROSInnovative, easy to pick up controlsGreat funGreat way to learn the game of American Football and its tacticsRealisticDepth of gameplayYou don't always win (keeps it interesting...)CONSUnderdeveloped weapons systemGraphics and player likenesses are nothing to write home aboutSuperstar Hall of Fame mode is limited to the extent that you can't really edit your superstar's face much - at all. Some of the mini-games/drills are very hard...Easy to find yourself using the same tactics on every drive against every opponent. (Just be creative and don't be afraid to try new plays).
