This is my first video game review so.... here goes. Coming to this as a Metallica fan first and a lax gamer second, I'm somewhat disappointed by this. I've never understood why, when I'm playing a song I've been playing as a drummer for 20 years, that when I play the exact same parts on the record, I get it wrong.. because this isn't a game for musicians but for people who aren't quite good enough to be musicians.. and so I have to unlearn every fill and hit I've known for years. Dave Navarro can't play his own band's songs on "Geetar Hero", so what chance do I have? All I know is that when I hold the cymbals after the opening hits of "Master Of Puppets" to keep a sharp crash, I'm getting it wrong, even though that's what Lars does.Aside from this, the game lacks some form of structure : I would've prefrred a set of levels with the band starting off in small clubs before graduating to the stadiums. Major shows from their career are represnted in this game, but landmark shows such as S&M 99, Mexico 93, Seattle 89, and the recent - and superb - Death Magnetic tour. There's no opportunity to recreate the setlists from these shows as barely a third of Metallica's catalogue is represented, and there's no sign of often played songs such as "The Day That Never Comes", "Of Wolf And Man", "Breadfan", "Motorbreath", "Damage Inc", "Blackened", "Harvester Of Sorrow" - let alone deep album cuts such as "Eye Of The Beholder" or "Dirty Window". And there's only one song each from each of the latest albums. Don't worry though, you get "Enter Sandman"... and the "Mercyful Fate" medley which has only been performed live once since late 1998! Whoo hoo.It sure is odd to play the Hammersmith Odeon in Master Of Puppets garb and perform nothing but songs written years later. Still, accuracy be damned. The trivia track tells you that not even Metallica can remember which songs belonged to which records, as they get numerous b-sides wrong. Still, it's a only a game, not a historical recreation, and thus, whilst there is plenty of fun shouting along and hitting things when the coloured buttons light up, I can't help but be frustrated with the sloppy approach to chronology, the historical fallacies, and the glaring errors in the song choices. No doubt that is what the inevitable sequel is for. It's great fun : but it was so nearly perfect. Still, fire up the Wii, lets hit some drums. MASTER! MASTER! MASTER OF PUPPETS PULLING YOUR STRINGS! ... ah, that's better.

Having played this yesterday for a fair few hours I had to write a review and express my amazement at how well this product is put together. The game itself, the graphics and the song list is just amazing.First off, I played this on the PS3 and was blown away by the graphics. Finally the Guitar Hero games have gone into overdrive on the background animations. The whole band is there, instantly recogniseable as themselves (with only Kirk being somewhat flawed in appearance but still very convincing). But what makes it stand out so much is the rendering and quality has finally begun to catch up with the hardware available and it looks breathtaking. The game play itself is superb, and if you have played and enjoyed previous Guitar Hero or Rock Band games then this will not disappoint. The difficulty seems to be a little harder, although this could be just as easily due to the songs themselves being more complex than say Blondie - One Way Or Another, rather than being a deliberate attempt at upping the difficulty (which personally I think it needed from World Tour which seemed a touch too easy). On to the Set List! If you like Metal, Metallica and generally rocking out with a plastic axe in your hand then this is a must own game. The majority of songs are there along with some very good songs by other artists chosen by the band themselves (from Slayer to SOAD and even the original version of Turn the Page which Metallica covered). The songs really are great and I was in heaven playing through Master of Puppets to The Memory Remains and everything in between. One quick note about the song list though, there are some noteable ommissions. Two big songs that stand out as being noteably absent are Blackened and Call of Ktulu, two of my favourite songs byt he band, so look for an expansion in the near future to further cash in on what is one of the best Metal bands ever to have deadened my ear-drums.Top game and a must own for any fan of both the Guitar Hero series and Metallica themselves. Certainly the whole band only sets now are a very good idea and while there is a Beatles one comign shortly for Rock Band, I can't help but think while the beatles songs are great, Metallica lends itself to losing yourself in Guitar God status much more...do you envisage strumming along to yesterday and Can't buy Me Love or thrashing out to One, Enter Sandman or Welcome Home (Sanitarium).Rock on!

I bought the game when it was released in the US and have been playing more than a month now. We, as a family, are great fans of Rock Band 1/2 and also enjoy GHWT a lot given the variety of songs and groups. We have GHWT instrument set but also a standalone wireless RB2 guitar (from US again) which perfectly works with this game as well.In comparison, and naturally, GH-Metallica is focused on the legendary group and you dont want to miss this game if you are a fan and do enjoy (or did enjoy) listening Metallica and alike. There are multiple other songs from various other Hard Rock groups, which you will enjoy playing, but still will be looking forward to play another Metallica every time.Unless you play only on easy, songs are distinctively faster and harder in comparison to the other games (for guitar, bass as well the drums). This is a real rock game and Metallica songs are much harder and far longer than standard 4-5mins. The game presents a good mix of Metallica's songs from various albums, both oldies as well as goldies. As an old time Metallica fan, it is a different feeling playing their songs, travelling in time noticing how their style has differed although slightly, but, rediscover again that the guitar riffs have always been the same! (try Sad but True, you wont regret missing any other note but the riffs! what can I say, it makes you feel happy as you play along...)As you progress in the career mode collecting stars, new and generally harder songs are unlocked in new venues. Trophies is a new feature of the game (like RB2), and earning them makes you grin as you know every one of them is well deserved. There are some small perks like some production videos and Metallifacts giving interesting background info on the songs/the groups (not only Metallica but others like Motorhead etc which have songs in the game), as well as how Metallica has worked with the GH team while developing the game (some of them are pretty funny indeed). Also you can change how Metallica members look while playing one of their songs, either long hairs from `90s or their recent style, or play the bass as Lenny in Ace of Spades...Bottom-line, solid GH game with some new features that you will enjoy. Nothing really exciting in terms of a new innovation or a big difference compared to previous games but a real must buy for Metallica fans...

As soon as you put in the disc, you know you're going to have a good time, as the game greets you with an awesome cartoonish representation of Metallica playing Master of Puppets, continuing with a chronological enumeration of their albums, starting with Kill 'Em All, all the way to Death Magnetic. The gameplay is what you'd expect from a Guitar Hero game, and this one re-uses assets from World Tour. I'm not saying this as a bad thing, though; it features a nice interface, seamless gameplay, and, best of all, a lag calibration tool that actually works by itself, removing the need for manual calibration of video and audio. The obvious selling point of this game is the music, sporting great classics like For Whom The Bell Tolls, the breakneck-fast Hit The Lights and Whiplash, and the technical masterpieces that are Master of Puppets, Orion, and Creeping Death. Moreover, not only does the game feature songs by Metallica, but also by the bands who were either an inspiration for, or inspired by Metallica, including Mercyful Fate, Queen, Foo Fighters, and Machinehead. There aren't any flaws that I can think of in terms of gameplay, at least from my perspective. One thing I really like is the Cheats section, which allows you to, among other things, activate the much-needed Hyper-Speed (with 5 levels of intensity), change the colors of the Notes, and even switch between present-day Metallica skins to 80's Metallica (in case you were wondering, the bass player is still Robert, not that I personally have a problem with it).Lastly, there are a couple of Metallica songs I would have switched for others (no to The Thing That Should Not Be and The Memory Remains, and yes to ...And Justice For All, Harvester Of Sorrow, and either Eye Of The Beholder or Ride The Lightning).Overall, I can't be all that upset by a few odd song selections, given the enormous potential of the Custom Songs addition, so my final score for the game is a well-deserved 9 out of 10.Read full review...

Right, I'm not reviewing the demo, I have Guitar Hero Metallica, I bought it on ebay from the U.S, because I simply could not wait until May. I can't really review the gameplay, because it's just good old guitar hero, hit the green, red, yellow, blue, and orange notes, as they cross the targets at the bottom of the screen. GH:M is alot better than world tour, which don't get me wrong was also a great game, but GH:M has gone back to the previous GH style, where you have a setlist of songs to beat, instead of playing tours, and I personally prefer the setlist. But with GH:M Activision has added a new insentive to the career mode, to get to the most difficult tier of songs on the setlist, you have to have accumulated above a certain number of stars, I can't remember exactly, so when you've earned enough stars, you can go straight to the last tier and I had earned enough stars about halfway through my hard lead guitar career, so i went straight to the last tier, and got to play the more challenging songs like "One" "Fight Fire With Fire" And "War Ensemble". Another good point is the ability to gain trophies, and there's a nice sense of accomplishment when you get a trophy. I think that the only downside to GH:M is that there is a song on it that is 11 minutes long, I almost fell asleep while I was playing it. So to summarise GH:M is better than GHWT, but i would only recommend this game to Metallica fans, I'm not a huge fan of Aerosmith so I didn't buy GH:Aerosmith, so only buy this if you are a Metallica fan and have fun with it if you do buy it.I'm Luke I'm 14, And I'm Using My Dad's Amazon Account To Write This Review, It's My First Review So Don't Be To Harsh On Me Please.

Simply said, if you love Guitar Hero, and you love Metallica, you'll love this game. My experience on the game is limited to drumming, however I assume the guitar modes are equally intense on the harder levels.Based on the engine used for GH: World Tour, the game feels a little dated, especially if you've played the later additions to the series. However, it does not take very long to get used to the new interface and before you know it feels like the default again. The graphics are good, old Metallica fans will recognize some of the venues from VHS/DVS past (or from your own memory if you were so lucky). The motion capture has been done brilliantly, from Lars Ulrich resting his foot upon the drum stool; looking on knowingly,to Robert Trujillo's manic spinning bass technique to James Hetfield's animated vocalization. There are some nifty extras, including some behind the scenes and some rare concert footage. You can download the full track listing of Death Magnetic into the game which is quite a nice touch but to be honest I would have rather had a mix of some of my favourite Metallica tracks which were not included in the game.Overall it's a very enjoyable game, either playing alone or with friends at a party or online. It makes an excellent addition to the Guitar Hero series. Unless of course you think Metallica are rubbish, then you will probably hate it.

This is, in my opinion, the best Guitar Hero game in the franchise. If you are considering buying the game only (without guitar controller), I assume that you are a GH veteran, and own a guitar already. For this reason, you will probably enjoy the game because:1. The songs are challenging.2. There are loads of solos (i.e. fun parts). If you like Metallica or metal in general, the game offers the best soundtrack of any GH game by far. Guitar Hero is made infinitely more fun when you're playing songs that aren't boring or annoying to you, and it is this combination of great Guitar Hero gameplay mixed with a great soundtrack that puts it at the top of the pile. There are loads of cool extras for the dedicated Metallica fan, such as interesting facts and trivia about each song, and if you have ever seen Metallica live, you will notice how realistically the band behaves on stage in the game. The band did extensive motion capture, so the game characters play each song as the real band would.TO SUMMARISE:If you are a half-decent GH player already and/or like Metallica and metal in general, you will probably love this game.If you don't like heavy music/metal, I would recommend buying Guitar Hero 3 or Guitar Hero: World Tour instead.

As a big fan of the Guitar Hero series and a huge fan of Metallica this was an absolute match made in heaven for me. The gameplay is just the same as any other Guitar Hero game so it's everything you would expect.I would say that as a player who can regularly get 5 stars on medium on previous games, I found myself getting 3 stars towards the latter songs and I even failed two songs, which I haven't done since I first got a Guitar Hero game. But it's Metallica, so you'd expect it to be a bit harder I suppose. The storyline is a lot of nothing, they make out that you want to start a band like Metallica, and after playing about 3 songs you are already supporting them.I also found that there were say 10 songs to complete in a section. If you completed two sections, you had already unlocked about another 50 songs to play. It's not like old GH games where you need to say complete 4 out of 5 songs to move onto the next level. On the plus side, the Death Magnetic Downloadable Content works on the game. It's basically an add on for GH, so unless you really like Metallica, I suggest you wait for it to come down in price.

This is easily the best of the Guitar Hero games yet. I admit I am slightly biased towards it; being a big Metallica fan, but it's still the best one anyway. If you've played and conquered the other GH games, then this one is NOT just more of the same. It is a lot harder than the previous games; with more complicated solos, and with the songs being longer you need a bit of stamina in those fingers!!For me, it was fantastic to get to play some of my favourite songs on Guitar Hero; not just Metallica songs, but 'Demon Cleaner' by Kyuss and 'Blood and Thunder' by Mastodon. It is also disheartening trying to do justice to classics like 'One' and 'Master of Puppets' when they have such hard bits to master...I've only had it three days though!!Take my word for it; whether you are a Guitar Hero fan, a Metallica fan or even just a bit of a rock/metal fan, get this game and shred away until your fingers are locked up in pain!! It's the best of the Guitar Hero series so far and not just a limp attempt at a way to make money out of a global franchise like Metallica.Very impressed... buy it!!

I'm so happy with my purchase. I am a fan of metal music and I've been several times in Metallica's concerts. The game was very fun and addictive. I couldnt stop playing not only the famous badass songs that metallica has to offer but also from the other bands such as System of a down or Motorhead. The game is extremely hard if you wanna play on expert as the guitar or expert+ with the drums, but its very fun playing on medium or hard difficulty and nailing a song 100%. My fingers where crying after I was done playing metallica's songs because they're so long! Almost every song is more than 5 minutes long, but thats a good thing because you dont feel like Guitar Hero 5 where the songs sucked and you were bored to hell and wanted to just get rid of it and move to the next boring song until you're done with the career. The gameplay is pretty much the same with all the other guitar hero games of the franchise. The graphics are OKThe song selections is pretty badass!I would recommend this game to any metal fan out there that cant aford a real guitar and wants to have some fun.4/5

So i have played all the guitar hero's from legends of rock up and this is the best guitar hero yet. Even tho i'm the biggest metallica fan ever it wouldn't of changed my mind if i wasn't. The songs are hard but you feel like you achieved something when you play master of puppets and nearly 100% the solo. I play expert and before writing this review i went through all the difficultys (even tho i started on easy i forgot what it was like) and they have done well to help new or not so good guitar players. even tho this game is old you must buy it and if you ever want a match add me on the online (which owns too) my name is "drummers hell" which also reminds me,this is the first guitar hero to have double bass on the drums and what a change that has made the drumming is so much harder. Have fun when you buy it.

I bought this game for my fiance for his birthday, as he is a huge fan of metallica and has wanted this for ages. He didn't actually have guitar hero so it was cheaper to buy the guitar with another game, and this metallica game seperately - would highly reccommend doing it this way! The game is absolutely fantastic, he was really impressed with how 'metallica' the menus etc were, and the bonus features were interesting, as neversoft actually got the band together and put them in the funny suits with little bobbles on to get the movements for the game absolutely perfect. The game is great fun anyway as any guitar hero would be, and has songs other than metallica on ther for the other halves who aren't quite die hard fans,so don't worry! Just a great game, money very well spent :)

Being the Metallica fan that i am,i could not wait for this titleto be released in the UK,considering as it has been out in the US for so long. The set list is nigh on perfect, although why Frantic or King Nothing was included onhere is a mystery to me,something like Harvester of Sorrow or Blackened wouldhave been more fitting,oh well.No complaints on the guests artists choice of tracks,as there is a nice bit of variety there. However,i am a total Guitar Hero novice so i'm stuck at Easy level for now,but otherwisethe game is easy to pick up and get into so other GH "noobs" can jump right in and have some fun.Overall,a great game with plenty to offer for solo or multiplayer "band"play.

8.7.2009

simple,if you like metallica buy it,if you dont, dont buy it.Playing the bands few classics is almost worth the price alone.the other tunes are pretty dire, but again this is personal preference. The metallica songs are a good mix through the back catalogue and seem to be harder than a lot of GH releases.weird timings, stops and starts, intricate riffs, typical metallica. As with most band only releases youll either love it or hate it but I think its a worthy addition and miles better than GH aerosmith. This will plug the gap before Rock Band Beatles is released.

6.7.2009

I bought this game, as I have the other games in the Guitar Hero series.Although most of the songs are by Metallica & the majority of the songs are metal, I enjoyed the game despite not being a fan of this band or this type of music. The game offers new challenges through the songs & also has a feature that I hope to see maintained in the rest of the Guitar Hero series (which has been in the Greatest Hits game):- you have to earn stars for your performance, but you get more money to spend on the clothing & instrument of any created rockstar.
