After a long hiatus, the Guitar Hero series is back with a few new ideas to reboot the series. First off, the guitar's 1x5 button layout has been replaced with a 2x3 layout. This essentially gives you another string to take into account, so you have to completely relearn your skills. Chords now feel a bit more natural as you now need to stretch your fingers vertically as well as horizontally. Instead of five different colours, each representing a position, you now have black and white only which represents the string, with the on-screen position simply representing the button. In the game's main mode, simply called Live, the graphics now have live-action footage rather than cartoony game graphics. This massively improves the authentic feel of being in a band, although you could argue it's a bit dramatised. You begin walking onto the stage, with your crew chipping in advice to you as your guitar tech hands over your guitar. Whilst playing, your character moves about on stage, often catching your band member's eyes so they give you a cheeky smile and nod. There's two recordings of the action, so if you are playing well, you get a positive reaction from your band, and the crowd will jump happily. Start playing badly, and your band members will scowl at you as the crowd stands disappointingly or actively jeering. It can seem silly as you can be playing well, hit a few bad notes, then recover, causing the crowd to transition from bouncing around, to throwing bottles at you, then back to having the time of their lives within seconds. The songs are grouped by style, so you will have a certain band for playing Avril Lavigne/Rhianna/Katy Perry and a different band for Bring Me The Horizon/Of Mice & Men/Pierce the Veil. There's plenty of styles, therefore plenty of bands, each with their own style and aesthetic. To me, the choice of songs seemed disappointing at first. In all honesty, I actually enjoyed the songs even if I didn't expect to appreciate songs from these artists. Instead of the majority of songs consisting of hard rock/metal/classic rock, they have tried to represent many of today's popular genres. So you get a selection of pop, pop-rock, indie, folk, rock. Most of the songs won't feature the technical hardship as seen in previous Guitar Heros, nor are they as progressive (after-all, most pop songs are structured with repetition). However, you soon eat your words when playing the Expert level. Transitioning quickly between chords is a big challenge, especially at pace when notes are flooding the screen. The other mode is Guitar Hero TV. In this mode, you play along to real music videos. It's like watching a music channel, but you can play along with it. There are two channels to play to, and each one has a schedule. The shows are usually 30 minute slots, so it could be Indie songs, then Pop, then Songs Beginning with the Letter A. Annoyingly, you are thrown into the initial song part-way through, but as long as you commit to playing at least a few songs, then it's worth it. You can see the other players scores as you play, and beating them gives you extra rewards. With your rewards, you can purchase Play tokens which allow you to choose a song to play on-demand. Instead of selling DLC, you now just stream tracks, but you can earn enough tokens to keep you entertained without paying.Instead of just building on the previous games, features which you assume to be here are now gone. The lack of Practice mode is the biggest blow. Practice mode was brilliant for isolating particularly tricky parts, slowing them down, and playing them on loop until you become proficient. Without it, you are forced to play the entire song at normal speed and hope you do better that previous runs. Another huge step back is the lack of drums, bass or the option to choose rhythm or lead guitar. You can still do the vocals, although this option was unavailable for me since I don't have the microphone.Other annoyances were the fact that your high scores aren't that clear. At the end of a song, I expect it to show my current score and compare it to my high score, rather than me having to remember my score then go looking through the menus to find my current high score. I didn't notice any sorting options in Quick-play and it always returns you to the top of the list, rather than returning you to your last menu position. If your battery cuts out, it doesn't pause the game either.Guitar Hero Live gives you mixed feelings. It's a huge step back in some ways but the interesting ideas like the new button layout and the GH:TV mode drive the series forward. The lack of on-disc content is disappointing (42 songs compared to 85 songs in Guitar Hero 5), but you have access to a huge amount of content via GH:TV so has plenty of content and longevity as long as you utilise this mode.

10 yr old son received for Xmas. Hadn't asked for it and although he loves music, plays drums etc initially he wasn't very interested - I think he's used to mastering games very quickly so ignored the 'basic' setting so the crowd jeering put him off. Changed the setting from 'casual' to 'basic' and he started to find his groove. By the end of Xmas day - this was his "best present". The graphics are brilliant with videos of the bands and crowds that respond to the quality of your playing. Great sense of achievement when an audience member comes up to play air guitar with you. As you start to improve you get to unlock new tracks .......If you're new to this kind of play definitely start with 'basic'and get familiar with how it works. There's lots of positive feedback to keep you going including 'note streak' which counts the number of strums / note you got right a row .... day two and he's unlocked new tracks and it's "awesome". Thanks Nintendo & Activision for producing a new type of game for the Wii U - you've extended the console life in this household for some time to come ....... more please!

Love what they’ve done with Guitar Hero - the live action of the crowd and the interaction with your other band members is brilliant and has really brought the game up to date with a cool new look. The kids are having an absolute blast playing this, so I haven’t had chance to have a go with the re-designed controller yet - but it looks more like a real guitar and has different functions / frets (instead of just the colour coded buttons on previous versions). You get a tutorial (with your very own roadie) at the beginning to help you use the guitar properly - It’s made the game a bit more challenging, but kids and dad are having a LOT of fun.

I think this game appeals to a few types of people: existing guitarists/bassists, people who are new to Guitar Hero and people who like the original and want a new challenge. This game is similar to the original style with the 5 button guitar but it's not the same. The gameplay is much harder and the concept of having to move your fingers to a second row of buttons is hard for someone like me who's so used to the original style. The guitar itself also doesn't feel as good quality as the original style in my opinion. Still a fun game and worth the money.

cheapest price I had seen anywhere, prompt next day delivery, and a good game! Comes with the controller as well as the game.Note- does require a free USB slot in the back of your wii for the guitar.

I love this! And even though I am always booed off stage it's brilliant, the reaction of the crowd, the songs, the buzz! So much fun on your own or with friends.

After a few hours of playing you do get used to the new button placement. The PS3 guitars had somewhat smaller buttons with a wider room between the buttons.
