This was purchased as a Time Machine drive for my Mac, which I use to run a small business.After spending a while debating over Lacie's (admittedly very tempting) D2 range, I couldn't think of enough reasons to spend an extra sixty pounds for USB-C support and a tiny fan.I needn't have worried however - this G-Drive is superb.The lack of USB-C, while not as convenient now for many Macs', was solved with a simple adapter for a few extra quid. For an even simpler solution, I may in the future get a USB Type B to C cable, which again is very cheap. What's more, after investigating the differences between this G-Drive USB 3.0 and the Type C models, I was very surprised to discover that the former actually has higher better read/write speeds,and a faster 7200rpm drive versus a slower one on the Type C. See G-Technologies website for the data sheets.And as for operating temperature, well... it actually runs a lot cooler than I expected. There is no active cooling here, so the aluminium casing and front grille act as a giant heatsink, drawing heat away from the drive. During normal use it feels barely warm, and even during longer backups (including the very first ones), it was never hot.When the Mac is put to sleep, the drive will idle down and not spin, which is good for lifespan; and of course it will remain spinning when the computer is awake.One bonus feature that I couldn't quite make out from the product images was a On/Off button. This is great, because if you plan on not using the Mac for extended periods, just eject it from the desktop and then turn it off to save energy.The package arrives with the drive itself (surprisingly large and heavy, but all quality), a power lead with UK and EU adapters, USB Type B to 3.0 cable, and documents.In short - don't let the age of the product fool you, as it almost did to me. It is very high quality and 'just works', which is why they're so common in creative professions. I could have gone for a cheaper drive for Time Machine, but I figure that if the purpose is to retain an archive of data, you want it to be as reliable as possible.

This is an excellent external drive. Well built and whisper quite in operation.My only grumble is that it took me a few minutes to figure out, why the drive did not appear in Windows Explorer."It was formatted for Apple Mac use".Once I reformatted the drive, it appeared on the drive list and has worked well ever since. Later on, I did notice a reference to reformatting on the outside of the box, but in small writing.It would have been more helpful, if there was a label stuck to the plastic bag protecting the drive with this information written on it.It's a small point and does not in any way distract from this being an excellent drive.Very pleased with my purchase.30th November 2017 - Note: Just an update to the above.I am using this drive with two formatted partitions, divided into two approx 1.8 GB per partition. NTFS format for the Windows partition and ext4 format for the Linux partition. Both operating systems see their respective partitions and the drive works correctly relative to each operating system. For reference the versions of Linux I used to test the drive is Linux Mint 18.3 and Solus Budgie 3.There is a bit more read/write LED light activity on Linux compared to Windows, otherwise I have noticed no difference in performance.Hope the above is helpful.

Wanted something that has plenty of capacity to store lots of data an enable separate partitions. Great so far - solid, reliable and ideal for avoiding cramming my new Mac Pro with loads of files. My old Mac files all sit safely stored away for ease of access.

Good backup drive, fast USB 3.0 performance and spacious, used to backup G-Technology G-DRIVE Thunderbolt USB 3.0 6000 GB which is does very well.
