Some spirits are fairly gregarious and get on well with most mixers, but in my experience this gin from Eden Mills is rather more particular. Pair it with the wrong one and the party will very quickly fall flat. What it really hates is the company of a cheap tonic, and anything containing artificial sweeteners instantly jars with the particular flavour profile of this gin. So, do make sure you pair it with Fever Tree or one of the other growing band of high-end artisan tonic waters. Anything less will ruin it.An interesting and unusual mix, Eden Mill have selected locally picked Sea Buckthorn to create this signature spirit, and give a connection to its place of origin. Sea Buckthorn is a dense, spiny bush which grows wild along the shoreline and has been foraged for many thousands of years. The small, orange berries are hard to pick but rewarding for their tangy citrus taste and high vitamin C content. They lend a subtle, dry tart note to the gin, without drowning out the other botanicals. Also present are juniper berries, lemon balm, citrus peel and Angelica, all vapour-infused with the base spirit. The end result is a gin that has a rich mouth feel that is delicate, fruity and at the same time slightly earthy.Taste is subjective, and for mine, this gin is a smidge too rich, with a flavour profile very slightly lacking in a vibrant edge. To use a metaphor, it's a Bentley (albeit with a quirky orange interior) not a Ferrari. I would call it sophisticated and well mannered, and if that's what you like, I encourage you to try a bottle, because it is actually very good gin. It's just that I usually enjoy the company of something racier. But that's just me.Distilled to an excellent 42% ABV, and supplied in an attractive and heavy stoneware bottle. Try it and see what you think.

My first experience of this gin was 18 months ago when I visited St. Andrews. It was just so different from the gins that are household names and have been around for years. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have given it as a present to friends, who also now buy it. One recommendation - it's even more spectacular when the mixer is Fever-Tree Tonic Water. A match made in heaven!

If you like a ‘quality gin’ this is the one. Very smooth, the buckthorn gives the gin that unique flavour, all in all the original is a very impressive gin, we served the drink with a slice of grapefruit and 1724 tonic and like our guests we very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the gin.Bottle is also impressive, well done edenmill.
