there are many great puzzle games already for the PSP what with lumines, exit, puzzle quest, crush and many more. echoshift borrows the style from its predecessor but the 2D level designs are more functional and easier to get to grips with when compared to the 3D levels of echochrome. this game is a platformer as such, with a time limit, superimposed time loops and multiple mannequins used to pave the way for future mannequins you control to get to the exit. ratchet and clank: a crack in time on PS3 is meant to use similar mechanics in places. you use one manequin to press switches, stand on floor buttons and push down walls, around the level in the time limit in order for future mannequins you control to access previously blocked off areas, locked doors and over previously invisible bridges to get to the exit using parallel universe teamwork. there is replay value in beating levels with faster times, and using less mannequins and then there are extra level objectives to complete. it would have been nice to have a level editor function and ways to share new levels with others; as it stands there are only about 6 extra new levels you can download to add to the approx. 60 levels already available. the platforming using springs, stairs, moving platforms and spotlights, holes and crumbling floors is fun and working with the previous 'shadow' mannequins and watching them is a delight. this is a merger of complicated and simple gaming into one, and so long as you have the patience and intellingence to beat the harder levels later you will be rewarded with even better levels to try out. the learning curve is fairly gentle, and most casual puzzle fans should find motivation to progress and complete the game and easily spend over 10 hours with the game.
