I've been using different games consoles to make music for a while now. So when I recently aqcuired a psp, I made a bee-line for any music software it may have. It has Beaterator... and thats it. I had not choice in the matter.I had some concerns, mostly regarding it being sponsored by Timbaland. Not only do I loathe his music, but I have ethical issues about using any samples he may have supplied for the game. Luckily Rockstar have kept their samples and Timbaland's samples seperate, so I was able to produce music free from Timbaland's influence.Anyone who has used a music tracker program in the past will be in familiar territory here. Side scrolling, colour keyed loops with a bpm meter...all the basics. Well laid out. The design of the menus can be a little obscure at times, but nothing that can't be gotten used to. There is a selection of pre-made loops if you want to get started right away, or you can make loops from scratch (preferred) if you'd like to make something really individual. There is a vast selection of samples, most of them useful. There are a few that you think "What the hell could anyone use that for" (most of them being in the "vocals" section. Can't help thinking the guys at Rockstar got bored toward the end of the development and just said weird things into the mic for a laugh). The samples seem to be of an acceptable quality. There are the standard array of effects (reverb, echo, fade in, reverse etc) which seem to work well. It may not have all the functionality of cubase, fruityloops etc, but for a portable sequencer that gets the job done you can't get much better.Sampling from an mp3 or microphone is supported but I've yet to sample anything. But its good to see its included. One of the best features is the ability to upload tracks you've made directly from the PSP to an online account with Rockstar, so you're able to share your work with other Beaterator users online. And the online community is very strong, and full of people willing to comment and rate your work. You are also able to download others tracks (if they are willing to share their project with you) for you to remix. This is a very good plus point for the software. One very bad minus point, however, is its export capabilities. It can only export in wav at 22000hz. This makes it near useless for professional-quality recordings unless you actually mic up the PSP and record it with Audacity or whatever. It really does limit the software substantially and its the sole reason it doesn't get a 5 from me.All-in-all it's a great bit of software which is flexible and has enough content that it can be (and, by many, is) used as a msucian's sole music tracker. Its export options are the only thing stopping me recommending it wholeheartedly.

PSP VersionHighly portable music notepad which is quick and easy to pick up. It is very capable considering it's running off a mini games console. The studio features have enough technical content to give experienced producers the tools to do a creation justice while the live feature is lots of fun.Pro's-Studio in a box - a must for a musician who owns a PSP-8 track recording and editing music notepad with no extra equipment required if you own a PSP 3000 [the built in microphone means you can instantly capture your ideas]-Useful accompanying tools [editable beats and synth plus lots of samples]-Very nice little synth and sample based drum machine-Import and export options [midi and WAVaudio]-Brilliant chord feature-Good sound quality-Fun live mode makes this accessible for people inexperienced with this sort of this while leaving plenty for them to grown in to-Useful help information available in real time-No latency issuesCon's-The resolution of the drum, synth and melody crafter only allows quarter notes - what you get from a basic drum machine [to make up for this there are plenty of flam samples]-The menus can get a bit frustrating [but then I've only had it a day so far]-Unfortunately PSP 1000 and 2000 do not have microphones, though this is obviously the PSP's fault, not Beaterator's-Slow browsing of samples from the UMD [though this isn't an issue if you're using the microphone to make your own samples]-No mouse, Midi keyboard, Midi controller, line in recording, multi channel output [wishful thinking here]SUMMARYIf you want to make music on the move [or you want a portable music notepad] and you already own a PSP then this is definately for you. Value for money wise this is an incredible application. It's obviously been designed by music producers as it ticks certain boxes - you know what I mean...

This is an amazing program for writing melodies and drum patterns on the fly. Its perfect for taking away on holiday or when your travelling on the train for hours on end. I love making music where ever I go but the thought of having to to take a laptop around is a pain. The melody crafter application is what sold it to me. I can now lay down a melody as soon as its in my head and load it up via MIDI into my main sequencing application on the PC.Beaterator is not my primary sequencing application, but it certainly gets the creative brain cells working when I'm not at home. This is so much better than the EJAY series. Theres a lot more going on under the hood than just selecting some samples. You can really get creative with this by writing your own melodies, chopping up break beats and adding effects such as chorus and compression. If your an experienced producer your find it's not Pro Tools or Propellerhead Reason by any means but you will enjoy making patterns and importing them later into your main studio software.Great work Rockstar and Timbaland and thank you for bringing me what I've needed for so long. Top marks scored for this one.

I'm a musician and I expected some gimmicky toy when I ordered this one day. But I was blown away when I started digging into it. I think the other guy here has done a good review of this, which I agree with.I'll only add that the software doesn't quite make a five star grade. Its 'wav export' (which should be a great feature) is let down by only exporting at 22kHz, HALF hi-fi quality (and sometimes with all kinds of weird noise) Plus it's not set up to do any time signatures than 4/4 (but you can cheat this in some fiddly ways). But as a portable sketchbook I've already made a good few pieces that I'm proud of. And it's just great fun.Overall I love it,though I recommend getting the download version from Sony simply because it runs alot quicker.Basically, if you know Fruity Loops this is like a scaled-down version you can throw in your bag. Cool.
