I was really pleased to be able to try this 'Villa Ascenti Gin, 70 cl'. I do love gin and have it with orange juice. I think the best part of having a gin and orange is the distinct aroma you get from the botanicals in the gin. I usually just buy the original brand leader but knowing that gin is really on trend now, with so many artisan etc., gins to try, I am happy to diversify. The bottle is of light green hued clear glass and the stopper has a 'zip' type, clear plastic, seal extending down the full neck of the bottle. The stopper is made of that plastic type cork and is nice and tight fitting. On opening, the aroma of the gin is really lovely. I can smell the juniper overall but i do get definite hints of thyme.I do not get the mint or moscato grapes that are listed as flavouring ingredients (mentioned as 'Crafted with special distillates') but there is a distinct botanical note that I expect they are all gathered within. On adding my orange juice it smells like a really inviting drink and on tasting it, confirms it. I think it is a little lighter, a tad fresher and possibly a smidgeon sweeter than my usual gin, with all the lovely gin botanicals coming through nicely. The bottle label suggests mixing it with prosecco and soda water - worth giving it a try at Christmas. I suppose I should extend my mixer choices. This bottle will last a long time, as I only imbibe occasionally but I will enjoy every glass of this artisan gin. With regard to the price - it is a lot more expensive, at £35 for 70cl, than my usual brand of gin but if you are looking for a pleasant gin for your collection you won't go far wrong choosing this one, as you have to pay more for a select product.

In my glass I have a curl of cucumber and a small sprig of rosemary alongside a spicy black pepper and cardamom tonic water. This gin is nothing like the Gordon's you'll get at Spoons and is instead aimed at the higher end of the market for connoisseurs. It's presented in an italian-embossed bottle with a stopper lid instead of the regular screw-top. It's heavy for a 70cl bottle, made with thick glass. The label around the neck and the label at the front are in Italian while the label on the rear is in English, stating the gin was produced in Italy, so it's not a cheap Italian-style gin - it's real Italian gin!The taste is fresh, velvety smooth and complex with hints of light berries and herbs.I'd highly recommend to sample this gin with a clean, unflavoured tonic water and ice to really notice the complexity of flavours it has to offer, and only then start to venture out into flavoured tonics and additional ingredients.Mint, cucumber and citrus go particularly well with this gin and will make for a revitalising garden drink in the summer (if I have any left by then). It's not often that I'll buy a gin of £35+, but this may well be my one-a-year treat that I really splurge on, as it is truly a delicious one - maybe in time for the spring if I run out of this bottle.

This Gin aims to showcase the finest botanicals from the Piemonte region of Italy and it is a powerful spirit even at a middling 41% ABV. I can detect the smell of unpicked mint leaves (sort of a grassy mint) and a woody thyme scent but the juniper is very powerful and the first thing that hits the nose albeit there is a distinct backnote of grape skins. Almost like a grappa aroma. It tastes very nice over a single large rock of ice to maximise cooling and minimise dilution. On the palate, the citrus like bitter sweet flavour is balanced by the astringency of the juniper and thyme as you can definitely detect the heat of the mint in the finish. This will go well with a quality plain tonic water albeit,at this price point, I like the idea of serving this long mixed with Prosecco and ice as a refreshing summer drink. Add soda water to that if you wish but I think it would certainly start the evening off on the right foot without further dilution.

First of all, this is a very cool bottle. Very Italian, corked closure and embossed glass scream 'premium' to me. I like the look and feel of it.I started drinking this gin neat, so to not swamp it's flavours. I certainly tasted the grapiness, and well as juniper, but found it very dry. The flavouring is subtle, so I decided to try it with a plain tonic.Once again, the fruitiness came through, and the dryness. I think the subtlety of the flavouring would be swamped by a flavoured tonic, so beyond a slice of lemon, and then lime for contrast, I avoided adding flavours. Now, I don't have an 'educated palate' so I really couldn't get the Thyme the tasting notes say is present. My call on this gin is it's one for an occasion - more than one and it's too easy to drink fast which is a bit of a waste. If you're having a serious evening of drinking, start with this one whilst your palate is clean.

This is truly a wonderful gin. It’s powerful and very pleasing on the palate. Gin appears in many forms these days – in fact it’s as though the industry took off in the last few years with small distilleries in every corner of the country. Personally I’m a traditionalist and love a G & T - I’ve never found another mixer I really like – and it’s is a perfect match for this gin. My preference is Fever Tree Tonic and I recommend it as the ideal companion.I’m not great into identifying what aromas hit me with any drink but I can say that the smell and taste of this gin is absolutely superb. My only negative point is the price. There are many other excellent gins on the market at a much lower price and I wouldn’t be paying this much on a regular basis. For this reason I’ve given it four stars instead of five.

If you like a gin with a strong taste of Juniper then this is for you - it is very fragrant. It is distilled with mint, thyme and Moscato grape and you can definitely taste elements of those flavours coming through. At 41% it is middling for alcohol content and you certainly can expect a kick out of it. This is a refreshing gin to drink and leaves you with the flavours that most people drink gin for, yet it is different enough to make it interesting for the pallet and the nose. With Schweppes tonic water this goes down a treat but fundamentally it is great just by itself in a glass. This is definitely worth trying a bottle and it will not disappoint. If you are a connoisseur of gins this is oneto try and if you are not it is pleasantly better than cheap supermarket products so give it a try.

This is certainly a different flavoured gin, however one that I've found to be quite enjoyable. Had I not received this to review, I probably would have overlooked it, since the bottle isn't the type that would normally appeal to me. Both my wife and I normally tend to go for fruity gins, however we both found the flavour of Villa Ascenti to be quite deep and appealing. Although the standard juniper flavours come through, on top of this you get a pleasant herby extra layer of flavour, thanks to the thyme and mint ingredients.Overall, I can definitely recommend this. Should you wish to have a more fruity flavour, it easily mixes with lemonade or other soft drinks, otherwise we enjoyed it with a basic tonic water.

I've given this gin an overall rating of five because of the great flavour and quality of this clearly premium gin. Along with all the regular botanicals, it also has Moscato grapes added to it which does come through but thankfully not overpoweringly... if you want the full taste of Moscato then buy a sweet wine! This is however an interesting new gin for me and showcases the flavours of the Piemonte region beautifully.I gave it a 3 out of 5 rating for value for money though because there are many good gins out there for less. If you are a collector and gin enthusiast you may be willing to pay the extra for a new gin taste.

I wouldn’t normally buy a gin this expensive but it was on a very good special offer so I struck whilst the iron was hot. It comes in a really nice embossed bottle which is really thick, would probably survive a drop on a hard floor. Taste wise is really good with obvious juniper and also quite herby. Because of its premium I’ve drink it with tonic so as not to detract from the flavours

But plenty of thyme. It's certainly the strongest flavour here so bear that in mind before buying it. It's certainly strong and distinctive and tastes best when served with tonic and nothing else as when I tried it with lemon the flavours clashed. If you're in the market for a premium gin that's a wee bit different I'd certainly recommend this one.

We are spoilt for choice these days with the number of gins that are on the market. I was delighted with this one, probably because it has quite a traditional gin flavour and not masked by anything else. Great with a tonic, ice and lemon simple and delicious.
