At last a pepper mill that works. This Cole and Mason 165mm Pepper Mill is a medium sized one - it's bigger than those short stubby ones but not as tall as those found in many high street pizza restaurants. We think this size is ideal for most domestic kitchens - it's not too short to grab hold of but not too tall to be ungainly. This Cole and Mason mill feels nicely made from Beech with a hardened carbon steel mechanism with a silky finish. Our experience of Cole and Mason products over the long term has been good - they really last and this one looks as though it won't be an exception plus, there's a lifetime warranty. The mill is easy to fill and takes a sufficient load of peppercorns so that you won't be filling it too often. To fill it up you simply unscrew the knurled metal knob on top of the mill. You can also adjust how fine or coarse the grind is by the extent to which you tighten the knurled knob. When you turn the top of the mill to grind pepper there's that satisfying feeling that it's doing its job and your efforts are quickly rewarded by the aroma of freshly milled pepper. One final word, we've found that the quality of peppercorns can vary widely - it's worth a few pennies extra to get better quality peppercorns. In summary, a well proportioned, designed and made pepper mill with a lifetime warranty - a good investment. Recommended.

I hate spending money unnecessarily but there are times when it makes good sense to do so. Hiring a lawyer is one instance and buying quality salt and pepper grinders is another. We've tolerated several cheap salt and pepper grinders over the years, the latest being in stainless steel and looking good on the table - but they turned out to be a triumph of form over function. Having put up with these inferior grinders for several years, I finally snapped and invested almost twelve quid in a single salt grinder - the Cole and Mason Beech one featured here (and a matching peper grinder from another supplier). OMG - the difference is startling..!! Firstly, its a lovely item to behold, handle and operate with a smooth (non-jerky) action and the ground salt comes out in clouds of consistent size (no lumps). Very very impressed with this item and I can't recommend it highly enough. Unfortunately the company didn't advertise the matching pepper mill so I had to order that from a different supplier (who took 6 weeks to tell me they couldn't get one, but that's a different story). My only suggestion is, if you want both salt and pepper grinders, try to find a supplier which can dispatch both items rather than going separate, as I did.

I had one of those bursts when loads of pieces of domestic equipment fail all at once (largely age-related, it must be said). I was particularly offended when my previous wooden Cole & Mason pepper mill (used every single day in the kitchen for cooking) collapsed. The only thing that was wrong with it was the metal strip fastened by two screws on the bottom, over the grinding mechanism, had sheared. I immediately looked to see if I could buy a replacement metal strip .... I then pulled myself together, reminded myself I couldn't even remember when I'd bought it (probably 25 years ago) and noted a near identical replacement was not very expensive. It arrived with commendable speed and looks almost exactly the same, except it has a useful clear varnish finish and a rather superior mechanism. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet!

A well - made, easy to use pepper grinder. It certainly has the appearance of a more expensive product and seems very well made for the price. The grinding action is smooth but the size of pieces produced is variable, from very small to quite large chunks! The mechanism works well but cannot judge its longevity as I have not used it long enough. You are not really buying a William Bounds grinder on the cheap - their mechanism is more robust (mine lasted 20 years) and can produce three sizes of evenly ground peppercorns. You will have to pay at least three times more for their comparable grinder. In summary - a very good value product, but you probably get what you pay for in this case.

When this pepper mill arrived the instructions on how to open it were rather vague, but once this mill was opened and filled it worked great - exactly as expected. Other pepper mills that I have been bought have failed after a few days, including the motorised versions, but this one is still going strong and has the promise that it will continue this way for a long time to come. I would certainly purchase another one if ever this one fails. It is worthy of the full five stars and more. The only downside is that each time the mill is filled one has to readjust the setting of the grind, but I regard this as a minor inconvenience compared to it working each and every time.

Good solid pepper mill that holds a decent amount of peppercorns and is just the right size to hold without being too small or large - or too heave, s some of the larger mills can be for little hands. I thought this was reasonable value, considering it is a known brand. The two negatives I find with the product are that the silver screw on the top sometimes flies off if inadvertently loosened it over the course of a few weeks (easily done). It can also be a little tricky to fill without spilling your peppercorns all over the worktop, though it gets easier with practice. Overall, a good purchase and I probably will get the matching salt mill at some point.

This pepper mill is something of pure beauty, my boss got me to order one of these, we wanted a quality pepper mill, we were not disappointed. This pepper mill gets used everyday for accumulated about 1-2 hours of continuous use every day and it shows no sign of stopping; the mechanism is a marvel, flawless and prestige providing perfectly ground up pepper or even chunkier pepper, dependent on how tight you have the nib at the top.We were so happy with the build quality, price and how well it grinds up pepper compared to the pepper mills we used to use, because of this, we ended up ordering another so we could get rid of our other inferior pepper mills.

after many years using up a huge amount of peppercorns in a very large plastic pepper mill i decided i wanted proper pepper in a proper mill of the classic style. this one fitted the bill perfectly. of course its the pepper that matters but having a mill like this where you can truly control the amount of pepper and the size of the milled pieces is excellent. for example on garlic bread pizza where fine milled pepper works really well this mill is excellent, looks and feels nice, well made, will clearly last a long time, definitely worth the small purchase price. for other dishes you can mill large pieces (e.g. stew) and it really works as a mill should.

On use until now, this is by far the best salt mill I have owned (£10-£15 per pair till now). I cannot comment on the longevity of the product but it does feel a quality item.I have given 4*'s as I also ordered the pepper mill from the same seller, who unfortunately, were unable to honor the transaction after the receipt of the salt mill. I CANNOT find the corresponding pepper mill anywhere on line so I have bought the 'Capstan', which although a lighter colour, is also superb. In hindsight, buy the capstan pair from somewhere as they are basically the same and will match.

Even though I paid the extra postage to Sicily, this pepper grinder is absolutely top of the line and is very well made. Reminiscent of the sturdiness of ones produced in the mid 1980s. It isn't the cheapest out there but it's worth the extra, Avoid the solid plastic grinders which have plastic components in the grinding mechanism. Friction will destroy them faster than you realize, as they did with my previous grinder, which wasn't cheap and fell apart quickly. So 10/10 for this one which I hope will see me out.

We had one of those fancy battery-operated salt grinders with a little light that came on when you were grinding so you could see how much you were putting in the pan. However, it was slow, whined constantly and took far too long to produce the requisite amount of salt, so my husband and I decided to go old school and bought this. It arrived speedily, and does the job perfectly! We really like it, so much that we bought the pepper grinder too and threw away the other grinders. Well worth the money!

This pepper mill is fantastic! I thought it may be too tall at first but it isn't actually when you see it in real life. The wood finish is really smooth and a lovely warm colour, not too dark. The grinding mechanism is very smooth and it also comes with a lifetime guarantee which is reassuring. The ground pepper does come out in larger pieces than I have experienced from other smaller pepper mills but I think if you are having black pepper 'HAVE' black pepper!! I would recommend this pepper mill!!

Some of the reviews mentioned a fake unbranded Cole & Mason pepper mill being received. I ordered from Amazon and the genuine article arrived. Luckily it was unbroken given the inadequate packaging, unusual for Amazon as normally things are over packed. The mill itself is perfect. Bought to replace an acrylic Cole & Mason one that was dropped. This wooden one is even better. Easy to use, to fill, to adjust. It looks better in real life than in the photos.

Well made, nice size, gorgeous colour, looks fantastic, and the grinder is superb quality as is to be expected of all Cole & Mason mills. Recipient (my other half) is delighted to have a mill that actually grinds pepper! Reasonable price too. Only slight downside is that it only holds about 35g of peppercorns, so capacity not that great, but Cole & Mason have a big selection of larger mills so that is being overly-pedantic as this is a superb product.

This is a great pepper grinder. It is sleek and stylish and does the job well. I really wanted something reliable as my previous one had broken, being used a lot by a heavy handed family (!) and so I didn't mind paying a bit more (compared to some cheaper options) to get a decent brand, and Cole and Mason is a brand I'd heard of.Easy to fill with peppercorns and simple and straightforward to use, would highly recommend.
