My previous set of salt and pepper mills were also made by Cole & Mason and we have been very happy with them. They were functional and well made, as you would expect from such a well know company that specialises in this area. I wasn't really sure what to expect from a set of mills costing twice the price to justify the extra cost. Having used this Derwent set for a few weeks now, I must say these are mightily impressive. The first thing to note is the very attractive presentation box that this set comes in, which makes it a great gift for a budding cook or food-lover. The mills themselves are very well made - they feel quite heavy to hold, indicating their high build quality. The stainless steel with brushed chrome finish will suit a modern kitchen very well, but wouldn't clash with any colours or designs. They come pre-filled with good quality salt and pepper, so they are ready to use.Operation is very smooth. The grinding mechanisms are almost effortless - these are noticeably easier to operate than my previous set, requiring very little force. The adjustment mechanism is different to anything I've seen before. Normally you have a small screw coming out of the grinding mechanism that you twist to adjust the coarseness. These have a clicky rotating coarseness selector built into the main body, with visible preset markings so you can see exactly which setting is currently selected. The available range is more than wide enough to give very fine and very coarse results, for both cooking and table use. Refilling these is a doddle - just pop off the push-fit tops and pour in more salt/pepper, then replace and away you go.I only have two minor reservations. The transparent bodies are made from acrylic rather than glass. I'm not sure whether this is to keep down the weight or cost, or if it is for safety reasons, but it probably would have been more hard-wearing and attractive if these were genuine glass. The other issue I had was that the salt mill had some mysterious black particles in it, mixed in with the pre-filled salt. They looked like they could have been tiny pieces of plastic left over from the manufacturing process. Anyway, I emptied this out and washed the mill, and this solved the problem. I am confident this is just bad luck in my case, so I wouldn't mark these down for that. These are top quality items that come with a lifetime guarantee on the mechanisms, so you should consider them an investment. If you want the best grinders that will last for years on end, or you want to give a really impressive gift, these are a great option. Highly recommended.

I hadn't heard of Cole & Mason before getting this salt and pepper mill set, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect when the package arrived. First impressions weren't that good – the product's box looked nice but the plastic interior was badly damaged and the mills were left rolling about inside. I also noticed that both mills were already filled (with sea salt and peppercorns, respectively), so all things considered I assumed that maybe they were pre-used returns. Fortunately, other reviewers have said that their sets came pre-filled and the damaged interior was probably just due to clumsy shipping, so I guess my fears were unfounded. There were some small marks on both mills from where they had been bashing against each other while in transit,so they're not bullet-proof, but the marks are hardly visible unless you look for them. The mills are 19cm high, with clear plastic bodies and smooth, brushed steel end caps; my preference would have been for the bodies to be made from glass rather than plastic, which will almost certainly become scratched over time. They're pretty weighty and fairly stylish, at least as far as salt and pepper mills go, if a little bland and uninspiring to look at compared to some mills. They're also not the smallest of things but this does at least mean they hold quite a bit of salt and pepper, which you add simply by pulling off the top cap and then pushing it back on when you're done. Each mill has a rotating ring on the bottom that lets you adjust the coarseness of the grind by altering the position of the internal spring-loaded grinding mechanism. The salt mill has fine, medium and coarse settings while the pepper mill goes into overdrive with a whole 6 different grinds to choose from. The ring clicks into place at each setting well and with no hint of 'play'; a small thing, perhaps, but reassuring nonetheless. Each mill crushes well but does have a tendency to jam when you move the grinding mechanism from coarse to fine, in which case a turn upside-down loosens the jammed granules. The advice here is to alter the grind setting only with the mill tipped on its side or upside-down, which does take away a bit of the magic.Although this would be a nice set purely as a pair of simple mills, the grinding adjustment is nice to have and the choice of setting does make a difference to how finely each mill grinds. Having that control does give dishes a slightly more professional appearance and I would think that someone who likes to cook (or just cover their dishes in salt or pepper!) would find much use for these mills.

I'll be blunt; If I hadn't had the opportunity to road test these for free, I wouldn't have bothered.Or I may have put them on a gift list... but unlikely when there's other things on my want-but-don't-need list around the same price!£45 for a pair of grinders may seem like a massive ask - given you can pick a set up for under £10, often considerably less! -but I have to say now I've tried them, I would be more comfortable paying for them.Essential reasoning:LOOKS & BUILDGorgeous design, extremely well built - no loose bits or plasticy looking parts - theyre stainless steel and I would guess acrylic, but the finish is fantastic.Downside; being brushed stainless steel they fingerprint like a swine.Upside to the downside though - easy to clean. Just you have to do it often!Theyre a great size - not comedy large or awkwardly small (which means reasonable amount of refilling) and also come pre-filled which you would expect for the cost but is still nice.Theyre also really weighty, which reassures for quality, and very robust. I feel like these will last considerably longer than ones Ive had in the past. As mentioned the finish is spot on - and the grind is perfect.A lot of the cheaper grinders with plastic "blades" wear down over use, or block too easily, some even misalign. Ive had one before, which I paid £14 for, where the grinder set up even fell out completely when encountering a particularly difficult corn! These feel tough enough that none of these issues would happen.SNAZ FACTOR:My favourite bit about these is the adjustability, from very course (perfect to crack peppercorns for sauces etc) to very fine (perfect for direct-to-food seasoning!). And this is on both the salt and pepper grinders. This adjustment is simple to do and doesnt require a vice-like grip or messing about, so also means if used on a table, its adaptable to personal preference.Only reason I drop a star is that - on a very base level - its still expensive as a layout cost for something that you dont NEED.IF however youve got budget, or like me have a bit of a kitchen gadget fetish and like to have awesome in your toolkit - you can easily argue yourself into justifying it!

I bought a stainless steel Cole & Mason ‘Monaco’ set several years ago, and it has served me well. It’s a similar size to this one, but it has screw fasteners on the tops. I don’t think Cole & Mason still make that design as I couldn’t find a similiar set on their website. You are required to unscrew the fasteners in order to fill up the mills, and they have a tendency to loosen meaning every time I go to use them, I find I subconsciously tighten the fasteners before beginning to actually operate them. They’re perfectly fine, but it’s a mild annoyance I had come to accept. The other annoyance is that they have begun to do that sort of squeeky fingers-down-a-chalk-board sound which a lot ofmills develop. These “Derwent” style mills forego the screw fasteners which I instantly prefer as your twisting actions don’t constantly work against the security of the device. They have three different levels of grind from fine to coarse, if you require that level of control. They have a nice twist action and so far don’t exhibit the annoying noise that my old set do - time will tell though. The salt mill uses ceramic action and the pepper uses carbon steel, so whether that is what’s making the difference I don’t know, but I know that it’s working well for me.This particular set comes in a rather swish presentation box, which makes them look very posh. The box is well designed and sturdy, and contains a little bit of back-history for the interested reader. It would make a nice gift, but then you’re left with the box, as ultimately in my case these are now out in regular use, so the box is kind-of redundant.Price wise, at around £40 (at time of review), some might argue that this is quite a lot to pay for a salt & pepper set, but I would say that these are very good quality, and I prefer the build and style of these to cheaper wooden or all-acrylic models. The quality of the mechanism in both mills seem top notch and they are a pleasure to use. There are some other decent brands out there which have some more adventurous styles, but I personally like these for their quiet sophistication. I therefore give them 4 stars.

I've used a number of salt and pepper mills over the years and none have been satisfactory over the long haul. It really is worth paying as much as you can afford for a top-quality product. With Cole and Mason you get the reassurance of a long-established and trusted specialist. Nevertheless, this set doesn't come cheap - so is it worth the outlay?First impressions - a beautifully boxed and presented set, worthy of a place on the discerning couple's wedding list. The design feels solid and comfortable to hold and use. A brisk tug upwards removes the top cover so filling is simple. I like the dumbbell shape - because the top is wider than the middle, filling is simple and not too fiddly. The transparent section is another plus, making it straightforward to see how much salt or pepper is left.Initially I wasn't sure about the multiple grind settings. Six (on the pepper) does seem a bit over the top. However, the difference in fineness is discernible and I'll probably use it more than I thought I would. The controls are elegant and simple to use, accessible to older cooks like myself who are beginning to suffer from arthritis in the hands.Ultimately, what counts is whether or not performance is maintained. A lifetime guarantee suggests that it will be. Considering how vital good seasoning is to the enjoyment of food, it's worth paying for this set, and in any case I am sure I've spent more on inferior ones over the years. This is a great way to add a touch of contemporary style and luxury to your kitchen, and a good option for those who don't care for the homespun 1970s appearance of wooden salt and pepper mills. There are a select number of kitchen purchases that give me pleasure every time I use them, and I expect these to be a welcome addition to the list.

As promised, an update on the durability of these mills. I've been using them as my main set for over a year now and had no issues at all. They work as well as they did on the first day I received them. I am upgrading this review to five stars.-- Original Review 14-May-2014This is a really nicely designed salt and pepper mill set. It comes in a lovely presentation box and so would, indeed, make a good giftset. The two mills match and, as shown in the main product photo, have metallic tops and bottoms with a brushed chrome finish and an acrylic body which allows you to see how full they each are.The pepper mill has six coarseness settings and the salt mill three (you will want to fill the salt mill with hard crystals of rock salt rather than a flaky sea salt)which are easily adjustable will a collar on the bottom of the mill. You refill the mills by simply pulling the chrome top of the mill upwards. This makes it very straightforward but I have to confess that I once picked up the pepper mill by the top and ended up dropping the main body back onto the table so I am not 100% convinced this beats the more conventional design where you have to undo a screw before refilling. The biggest bugbear I have had with pepper mills is how long the grinding mechanism lasts before the mill needs replacing. I currently have a Peugot branded pepper mill which has been going strong for several years now and I hope these will prove as durable. The grinder looks to be high quality (metal for the pepper, ceramic for the salt) but I will update this review when I have been using them for longer. In summary, a very nice cruet set, search "Peugot pepper grinder" on Amazon for alternative options which I also recommend.

Very nicely presented in a glossy hinged black presentation box, the Derwent giftset is a high quality pair of salt and pepper mills.I've been using a set of less expensive Cole and Mason mills for the past six months and their quality does stand out above other brands. In the Derwent, the pepper mill has a hardened carbon steel pepper grinding mechanism and the salt mill is fitted with a ceramic grinder. The pepper mlll has six degrees of coarseness to choose from and the salt has three; these are easily selected via the rotating dial on the base of each mill. These mills are an ideal size at around 8" in height; large enough to grip properly and hold a decent supply of salt and pepper - but not heavy.I was extremely impressed at the ability to adjust from a coarse 'chunky' dispensation of the salt or pepper to (in a simple twist and click of the base) a fine powdery dusting. The satin steel finish to the metallic parts gives them a modern look.Over the years I've used several different types of salt and pepper mills -plastic, wooden and brass and I've found on the cheaper alternatives the grinding mechanism has always failed or eventually worn out creating the need to purchase a replacement. The Derwent gift set comes with a lifetime guarantee which I would assume will cover the grinding mechanisms. Initially I was of the same opinion of some other reviewers and thought the set was too expensive, but with all things considered - the lifetime guarantee, the easiest way I've ever come across to adjust the coarseness of the grind and the high end construction of the mills, I think five stars is well earned. So, highly recommended - an item I'd be proud to own and delighted to receive as a gift.

I am a big fan of Cole & Mason mills as I have always found that they are excellent quality, grind perfectly and last a very long time. The Derwent mills are C&M’s top of the line manual mills and come with a lifetime guarantee for the grinding mechanisms. I can personally vouch for the excellent customer service from C&M in terms of this guarantee, as our old combination manual salt & pepper grinder ceased to grind about 6 months ago (we’d had it for year and years and years). As they didn’t stock that model anymore (yes, it was that old!), they invited us to choose what we wanted from their website as a replacement! All we had to do was send the old one to them.So the lifetime guarantee is just that – a lifetime guarantee. However, they do not offer a lifetime guarantee with all their products, so do bear this in mind if you choose a different C&M product. The Derwent pepper mill has a hardened carbon steel grinding mechanism and 6 graduating steps for the coarseness of the grind. The salt mill has a ceramic mechanism for the salt mill and 3 steps. They are both very easy to fill – just pull off the top and pour in. Granted, they are not as stylish as the Cole & Mason Electronic Cheltenham mills we also own, but I don’t mind the design of these (and they are brushed chrome, so no finger marks). The one thing I don’t like very much is the design of the grind selection dial at the bottom – the dots and pointer are on the outside of the mill which I find a bit “cheap” looking. We can change the coarseness of the grind with our Cole & Mason Electronic Cheltenham mills, but it is on the underside of the mill and therefore hidden away making the design just that bit sleeker.

These salt & pepper milks ooze quality, from the packaging to the feel in the hand and then to the best part, the use of them. Having been a user of supermarket prepacked one use salt and pepper grinders for years I had never really thought about buying a salt & pepper mill alone until I realised the difference in cost of the one use grinders to a box of salt whilst shopping online, I realised that I was a victim of false economy and I decided to look around for refillable grinders. I was originally looking for electronic grinders but the reviews were always a mixed bag due to the amount of batteries they used, the amount of seasoning they could hold through to electronic failures so decided to look for a manual set. When I saw these I originally thought people must be mad for paying so much for a set, but then I noticed the lifetime warranty and the old saying ‘buy cheap buy twice’ got me thinking. The copper set goes well with my kitchen theme so I decided to give them a go in the hopes that they would feel solid in the hand. Well these do, and not only that but the grinding action is smooooth...really a delight to use and as a bonus they actually look good to so I’ve left them out on display rather than hiding them away in the cupboard. It’s hard to get excited over a run of the mill salt & pepper grinder, but as someone that loves to cook and season well these are perfect in every way, they feel as though they will last a lifetime, and there’s always that warranty for peace of mind if they don’t. Buy a set and treat yourself, no more ratcheting away crunching up your seasoning, just a lovely smooth flow. I’m impressed to say the least.

I have a few items made by Cole and Mason and have always found them to look and feel nicely substantial and well made. This salt and pepper grinder set is no exception, it feels solidly made and has a nice weight to it without being excessively heavy. It also looks nice along side the Cole and Mason spice racks. The salt grinder has a ceramic mechanism with three settings and the pepper has a carbon steel one with six grades. It is easy to change the coarseness of the grind, though to start with I was trying to twist the very bottom section of the mill, you actually need to turn the next ring up (the one with the arrowhead and finger grips, not the one with the dots).I find it's easier to turn if you tip the mill up so the contents are not in contact with the grinding mechanism. It's possible to do with the mill the right way up, but there is more resistance. They come ready filled with peppercorns and sea salt, but when they run out it is simple to refill them. The stainless steel top section just pulls off so you can pour in your replacements. Don't be tempted to try salt in the pepper grinder as the mechanism will corrode according to the information provided by the manufacturer. They would make a really lovely gift as they come in a nice heavy duty glossy cardboard box with ribbon hinges to stop the lid opening too far.My only niggles with them are the price and that any salt or pepper stuck to the bottom of the mills tends to end up on the table top or collecting in the kitchen cupboards. If you don't like having to wipe out salt and pepper grinds from your kitchen cabinets, I can recomend another set of Cole and Mason mills

Over the years I have had a fair few salt and peeper mills of varying quality. These are at the higher end of the ones I've had without question. They look both practical/quite elegant and sturdy - perfectly at home on our dining table. They come in a decent gift box so would be very good as a present. The quality of these come over when you are using them. The pepper one gives a good grind of pepper at any of the 5 settings. The steel seems to grind the peppercorns very well. The salt mill is excellent. A big plus here is the fact that the grinder is ceramic. Over the years the only salt mills that have lasted a sensible time for me have had ceramic grinders. Most other grinders will not stand up to the salt for long. With this you get 3 setting but my partner and I have both found the results very good indeed.I really only have a couple of reservations with this. Firstly the price is not insignificant at a shade under 60 quid. That said most of the cheaper ones do not have ceramic salt grinders however good they look. With salt particularly I would now probably avoid the battery operated ones - they can give a variable grind and changing the batteries is usually a pain. The other reservation is with the "easy refilling" - neither of us found it particularly easy! An old Cole and Mason set that is still in use have stoppers on the top - they are easy to refill. If you are happy with the price these should be a long lasting buy that look very good. Excellent for a gift too. 4.5/5

I've never encountered anythigg from Cole and Mason that wasn't a delight to own and use but expensive to acquire, and this pepper mill is no exception. It's just lovely! The wood is very pleasing to the touch, the six-stage grind adjustment is a minor delight to adjust, and even filling is simple as the top pulls off for filling without needing to unscrew anything. (see pic). The main body is plastic, rather than glass, which is slightly surprising, but I suppose makes the pepper mill more resistant to breaking. The business end of the mill is made from metal with a plastic end, and seems well-made. (See pic) In fact nothing about this mill stands out as "needs improvement".(Apart from the price).I milled six samples of pepper, one for each setting, with 5 grinds for each sample. (see pics) As you can see, the finest setting (1) grinds the peppercorns pretty finely, with the coarse setting being considerably coarser, but also letting out a lot more pepper. There's quite a big step in the quantity of pepper output, from setting 1 and 2, so if you enjoy fresh milled pepper but like it fine ground, you'll need to grind somewhat more on 1 than 2.If you can stomach the price this is a really nice pepper mill, but I have to admit, £40 is too pricey to me. If you enjoy pepper, to own this is to love it: it would make a lovely present for the foodie in your life or as a treat for yourself, if you're feeling self-indulgent.

Even just by looking at the box this Cole and Mason Salt and Pepper set oozes quality. Opening it up did not disappoint, the salt and pepper mills were designed both for looks and practicality.Top and bottom of each mill were made of stainless steel whilst the middle of each mill was transparent acrylic so you can easily see how much salt or pepper you have left. Both come filled ready for use.So easy to adjust the coarseness of each grain as the bottom of each mill have dots, 6 on the pepper grinder and 3 on the salt grinder, the larger the dot, the coarser the grind. Just twist until the black arrow lines up with the respective dot. So easy and very effective.I have large hands and these mills are just perfect, they don't slip in the hand at all. Just turn and there you have it perfectly ground salt or pepper. Easy to fill, just unscrew the top of the mill - very easy.As I do a lot of cooking and always use freshly ground pepper or salt, I have used many battery operated mills and manual mills over the years and none have them have been perfect regardless of price. However I can honestly say that I cannot find any fault with these. They look good and do the job perfectly. They would also make a perfect wedding gift as they look really 'special'. They are very well made, attractive to look at, easy to use and the most important thing of all they actually work and work very well. Highly recommended.

These are lightweight, steel and acrylic, salt & pepper mills, branded as cole & mason's premium products. They are normal table sized (not huge and ostentatious) and have a decent capacity. The mechanisms are Cole & Mason's own, apparently guaranteed for life, and certainly work very effectively. I have only 2 issues, the first of which doesn't really detract from the product, but does seem unnecessary. This is that the mills grind is adjusted by a detented ring around the base, there are 3 sizes of grind for the salt, 5 for the pepper. It is an easy way to achieve a consistent & precise grind size, and does add to the overall appearance of the mills by avoiding the need for a screw-down top cap (normally, tighter = finer grind). I just have an issue with whether it is really needed: there's nothing wrong with a screw-down top, and an analogue screw allows a more controlled grind than a limited set of steps (and really, who actually cares about the size of pepper being precise anyway! generally smaller or larger grinds must be good enough for most of us!). The second issue does make me drop a star, and that is the excess of packaging. I appreciate that these are a "gift" set, but why this means there need to be 2 sturdy card-boxes, with an inner plastic liner, with translucent acrylic labels showing pictures of pepper and salt, in different sizes, is beyond me.

These arrived in a very nice bespoke display/presentation box opening at the side and held via concealed magnets, the salt and pepper mill set was secured in hard foam cut out, each grinder came half filled with salt and pepper respectively.Once I had them out of the box I gave them a good look over and the quality and finishing appeared flawless, aseptically they meet my personal taste with the brushed steel nicely offset against the glass with the subtle but easy to see adjustment markings and branding at the bottom giving an overall sleek look. The pepper has six adjustments and the salt mill has three, the mill grind setting is adjusted by twisting the base while holding the finger inserts above the base, this works well and I found adjustment fairly easy. I tested both the salt and pepper on all settings and there is a clear visible difference between the grades and the action is nice and smooth, I was not so keen on the filling system as you have to pull the top off and fill rather than any sort of screw or holding system, they don’t hold a large amount but I don’t really see this as a negative due to the infrequency of filling with these types of condiments.Overall in my opinion these look really nice, they work perfectly and have good adjustment, the filling system for me was a small issue and the only thing that stopped me giving top marks.
