Bought this from Amazon (not an Amazon seller), arrived in good time and condition and was fantastic value.Looks very attractive & is practical due to the inverted design, and as others have said, leaves no mess when stored in the cupboard but would not suggest leaving it out for long periods of time in case of dust collection.Having said that it is easy to clean & easy to refill by pulling out the rubber stopper, which fits snugly back in again.I have not experienced any problems so would highly recommend this set.Update 2017: Both mills are still in great working order. Both mechanisms are ceramic, the C&M website advises against submerging them in water to clean and to keep the mechanism dry or air dry before use (use a damp cloth to wipe only). This year I did have difficulty with the pepper mill (stopped grinding) so decided to check here in case there were any tips in the reviews but instead found information elsewhere which helped. The peppercorn mill stopped grinding but it appeared to be due to a build up of residues from grinding peppercorns. I took some advise to use rock salt (another suggestion was uncooked rice) and grind it through to clean the mechanism and this worked great. Back to a perfect set!I wonder if the 'quality' of peppercorn/ salt makes a difference to how long the mills last (after seeing so many reviews recently which say they are not well built - these had great 5* reviews back when I bought them!) such as size of peppercorns & rock salt, and how firm they are or how well they keep.

My husband has called me "pepper mill challenged" because of various problems I've had in the past filling and using cheaper pepper mills. A friend recommended one of the Unicorn pepper grinders that sells for over $40, but that just seemed like a lot of money to spend on one. So I decided to check out amazon to see if there was a high quality pepper grinder that cost less money. Thank you, fellow reviewers, for bringing up the issue about peppercorns sometimes spilling out of the fill hole on the side. Probably not a good design for the "pepper mill challenged." That's how I came across this little baby. First of all, I like to use a colorful variety of peppercorns,so I like that fact that it is transparent and you can see the peppercorns and know when it's starting to get low. I haven't had to fill it up yet, but I see that it will be easy to fill, just pop the plastic piece off the bottom and fill 'er up! The Unicorn looks like it could be a little tricky to fill up. I also like that you have to turn it upside down to grind it, then turn it back up to sit it on the table, and you don't get little pepper grounds on your counter or table. I'll probably get a salt grinder as well. Since I just bought this product, I can't attest to its durability, but so far I am very impressed with its performance. Finally, a pepper mill that works for me!

I have nothing but praise for these salt and pepper mills. I needed a new set for quite a while now, and did a LOT of research before finally settling on these. The first thing that struck my eye was obviously the design. As someone who appreciates fine design, I fell in love with these. I had never heard of Cole & Mason before, so I was a bit skeptical, but after checking their official website, I learned that these guys make just salt and pepper mills, with a few minor exceptions. So surely, they must know what they are doing. Also, the reviews on here were very helpful as well - thank you ladies and gentlemen. They are a pleasure to hold, easy to refill, and give an excellent grind for both the salt and pepper. No mess left behind, which is the problem I often had with conventional grinders. Here, everything is at the top. There may be some salt and pepper residue on the shakers after they've been used, but just run a dry cloth above the area and they're as good as new.For the price, it just does not get any better than this. I plan on getting another set, one for dry herbs and one for chili peppers.

Really loved this pepper mill until it broke. The design is great in that it doesn't get pepper on the counter when you're not using it. Also looks nice. However, at some point between purchase a couple years ago and now the top loosed from the bottom so when ever you used it the top would come off if you weren't careful. An annoyance, but didn't prevent it from working. However recently the plastic ring inside the ceramic grinder disintegrated and now the top spins without grinding rendering it useless. Called the company and would have to send it back. What good is a lifetime guarantee if it costs more to send it back than to buy a new one.I'd rather pay more for a product that will last.Update:Spent the few $'s to send the mill back to the company and received another back in the mail (obviously the lifetime warranty is real). It looks like they have updated the design of the grinding mechanism which hopefully will not suffer the same fate as the previous design. Being hopeful, I've changed my rating from 2 to 4 stars.

I just got this pepper mill on Amazon and was surprised that it didn't come with any packaging (no box, no warranty, instructions, etc.) The only indication that it's new is that there is a bar code sticker spanning the brushed chrome and acrylic (which leaves a very sticky residue when you peel it off. I'd recommend using goo-gone or similar to remove it). Of course the packaging has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the product but just wanted to warn others if you were thinking of giving it as a gift, it doesn't come in a box or anything! That being said, I've tried the pepper mill and it does work as promised. You adjust the grind by turning the small acrylic cone in the center (left - course, right - fine). The grind is very even. To refill, just sit it on its head and remove the large rubber stopper at the base. The opening is almost as large as the base itself, making it very easy to refill. The Inverta pepper mill looks great and works great. I'd buy this product again but probably not as a gift.

I have had a few pepper mills, but these one is the best by far. Honestly, I had never heard the brand name of Cole and Mason. The two most important advantages to this pepper mill are 1) it is inverted. So, when you set it down after use, it does not leave little pieces of pepper to be cleaned up the next time that you pick it to use it. 2) It is super easy to fill. The base is sealed with a soft rubber stopper. It comes out easily and goes back in easily, and yet it does not loosen to allow pepper pieces out. This makes it super easy to fill. My previous pepper mills had a little slot that slide open into which I had to try to funnel the peppercorns. in addition to these two advantages, the grinding motion is a twist instead of the typical squeezing a lever. This latter method for grinding is exactly where my last two grinders broke. I am expecting that to not be a problem with this one. Finally, is just looks cool. It has a modern, sleek look sitting out on a shelf.

I bought two of these and use one as a salt grinder. I bought them because they grind from the top, and I was sick of my old set dropping salt and pepper all over the table. The grinding mechanism works evenly and smoothly and it is easy to adjust the coarseness. They could be a tiny bit easier to grind-- the smooth round plastic top doesn't provide much of a grip-- but all in all, the mechanical functions of the grinder are excellent for both pepper and salt. Refilling them is VERY easy-- just unplug the big rubber stopper from the bottom of the grinder and pour in more pepper. My only (minor) complaints are aesthetic. They are kind of big and clunky, and the stainless is actually plastic and looks a little cheaper in person than it does in the photo. This has in no way diminished my enjoyment of a pepper and salt set that doesn't leave a mess all over my table, however, and I am very happy with the purchase overall.

I have forgotten quite how long our family has been using these grinders but it is a considerable number of years.I felt I had to let users of these grinders know of the great customer service I have received from Cole & Mason.Recently I have experienced a couple of problems with the grinders. The first was the salt grinder mechanism stopped grinding properly and the adjuster (the cone in the centre)had seized. The second problem was with the replacement grinder. After awhile the top half of the mill would not stay firmly attached with the bottom half and the two would part company with each other - usually this happened when used by a guest who was unfamiliar with this type of mill. However on contacting the makers these problems were quickly and efficiently dealt with. So, should you have any problems with your purchase I can heartily recommend contacting the manufacturers customer relations department.

I absolutely LOVE this pepper mill. Previously, my boyfriend and I were reusing the disposable McCormick mills cuz we were too cheap to invest in a good pepper mill. And before that, we used the Chef'n Mini Magnetic Set....it is the worst mill you can buy!Anyway, this mill is super, i love grinding pepper so much! It's fun and easy! It's a good thing I like pepper because sometimes I get carried away by grinding too much. This mill has an adjustable grind size, it's clear so you can see how much is left, the peppercorns are easy to refill....and the best part is the inverted design so you don't get pepper dust all over your counter.I can't speak to the durability of the product,as I've only had it for a couple months, but it seems to be very sturdy and I hope to have it around for many years!

I cannot believe there are so few versions of this simple idea on the market. After years of mess and waste caused by pepper landing either on a tray, tablecloth or work surface we now save money and time. In addition to being excellent pepper grinders they are so easy to fill by comparison with the more usual top fill models. A simple rubber bung in the wide bottom means refilling can be done quickly and without a funnel. We replaced the salt with mixed peppercorns. Sadly, here is the only downside we have encountered so far. The largest peppercorns are too big to be ground, but we haven't found any mill that will deal with these. However, I thought to give the product five stars when it won't deal with these would be misleading.I feel this is a minor problem considering the other advantages.

Really impressed with these which I bought after the previous Cole & Mason Mills fell apart after years of service. They are well-made and the inverted design looks good as well as being a practical solution to having salt and pepper all over your kitchen table or top.Easy to re-fill as the bottom is a pull-out rubber bung.Best of all the 'grade' of the grounds is easily adjustable by turning the mill spindle at the top. This means you can have very fine salt and pepper, eg for chips, or nice and course salt and pepper to season the skin side of Sea Bass fillets (a personal favourite!).Everyone who has seen and used these has gone off to order their own - that is a good recommendation.

Over the last few years we have tried many salt and pepper mills, both battery-operated and manual but they have all had major design faults. The battery ones never seem to be strong enough to grind peppercorns and finding a decent salt mill is always a challenge. Finding a pair that both worked effectively appeared to be impossible. I read through the Amazon reviews on many sets before deciding on these, and awaited them with trepidation - would they be yet another waste of money? I am pleased to say that they are excellent at their job as well as looking handsome and of course there's no mess, either. A very simple, thoughtful and functional design. Well done, Cole and Mason.

While it may not be as elegant or expensive as its wooden brothers, this pepper mill gets the job done without any mess. I like to keep a clean cooking area, and most pepper mills leave behind pepper dust everywhere - bad news. But the inverted design smartly avoids this problem. I leave it on the counter along with the salt because I use it almost every day, so any dust settling in there is not really a concern. It's also difficult to find an inexpensive mill with an adjustable grind, and the variety of grind sizes on this is perfect.I accidentally dropped my initial mill, cracking the top plastic part, but I just ordered the exact same thing again and never looked back!

31.10.2012

I ordered this because I dislike the mess made by normal salt and pepper mills - especially the bits that got left in the kitchen cupboard where they were kept when not in use. This salt and pepper mill don't make the same mess as the grinder is at the top (you turn them upside down to use). The first time you come to use them it seems a bit unnatural to upturn them before using, but you soon get used to it. They come with salt and pepper already inside but when it's gone, refilling couldn't be easier - just pull out the rubber bung from the bottom of the mill, top it up, then push the bung back in. They look nice on the table too, I couldn't ask for more!

21.7.2014

I can't get too excited about a salt / pepper mill - but these do one key thing - not drop salt and pepper grinds everywhere! I'd been looking for something spillage free for a while and these fit the bill perfectly. Note that the top of the salt / pepper grinder gets coated in fine grinds inside of the 'funnel' once you start to use it (not sure if this is static or dampness that causes this - maybe a bit of both), but personally I don't think this makes the grinder look dirty or messy - just used - something I'd happily put out on the table for guests. The grinder mechanism appears to be good quality too - hopefully they will last a long time.
