I purchased these mills in an effort to "buy the best" as a gift for my wife. They worked great for six months then the pepper mill stopped grinding. We found if we swapped functions and placed the salt in the pepper mill and vice versa we could get them to function for a further six months. They have both packed up now. The online contacts for the farcical "lifetime guarantee" failed to respond. I have tried twice to all six e mail addresses, no joy.If you want a pepper mill buy a steel grinding wheel variety. We have reverted to our 20 year old mill. The ceramic design does not work if you wish to use the mill every day. The instructions warn against "over tightening" of the grinding wheel.I like a coarse ground pepper so this was not a problem in our case.Great design/idea for a year, advice get a good stainless steel grinder for half the price.Update 2008 and then again March 2010. Got a call from T and G customer services (2008) to say they had read my Amazon review. They sent me two replacement grinding wheels. OK until these "larger redesigned" wheels broke whilst grinding pepper (ruining my Pizza and salad). Contacted them again to complain (Dec 2009). Three months later I got a replacement grinding wheel, again. So I have updated the star rating form 1 to 3 as they do work well (when not failing). I was only going to give 2 stars but fair play to T&G although tardy their customer service is excellent, eventually.Advice If you can afford them for show (dinner parties etc) splash the dough for T&G and keep a wooden and steel grinder in the cupboard to use most of the time.Update Nov 2012. The last set of replacement wheels are still going strong after 2 years, no problems. if you buy this product make sure it is the latest model with the improved design of ceramic wheels. I am not sure if this is possible but good luck if you can.Update jan 2016 - Has been working well for the last 4 years, used evry day, new design of grinding wheels works. I'd give it 5 stars now, so I will

I got tired of the salt and pepper grinders I had just bought as they didn't work too well, a pain to unscrew/rescrew to refil, and no even sprinkle.. and a lot of work to get out the salt and pepper.I bought this and the salt grinder, and wish I'd bought them years ago.ProsFirstly, it is very easy to fill, pop off the little cap at the top and fill, no screw-pole thing in the middle, just fill it up and pop the cap back on. Easy.I fiddled with the grinding settings at the bottom, easy and works as it says. Tighten the screw cap for smaller granules.Delivers a smooth, steady stream of pepper.I made steak au poivre and got the size of the pepper just right. Easy. Took less time to get the pepper out,and cover the steak evenly. They look nice too, especially if your kitchen has stainless steel colours for your hob, oven, etc.Cons:The matching salt grinder looks identical except for the little label on the top, so a pain to grab the right one. If you need reading glasses - well you might have to put them on. A nice big P or S on the side would have been nice...Also, I can't see a difference between the salt and pepper grinder, I think internal grinders are exactly same. Only the label is different.Note. The salt one works just as well as the pepper mill. I think the reason other reviews say the salt one doesn't work as well might be because of the salt they put in (e.g., the size of the sea salt bits) and the setting on the grinder needs to be slightly tighter to grind the smaller bits of salt as pepper corns are much larger. Tip. I would buy the stainless stain and acrylic one instead, so you see the pepper and salt on the top half through the acrylic.Jan 2016 UpdateDropped it onto tile floor and it came apart in two halves and does not go back together. Contacted T&G Woodware by email and they agreed to fix it if I paid the postage (£2.80 to them) and cost to fix of £5.00 (which includes postage back to me) because it was past the return date.

I am an extremely fussy shopper and demand good quality goods that work efficiently, so I spent a lot of time reading reviews about a lot of pepper mills before settling on this one! I had been considering buying an electronic one because I find you usually have to turn manual grinders so many times to get a decent amount of pepper out of them. But after reading dozens of poor reviews on electronic models, I decided to go for this one instead - even though I was still a bit sceptical about it being a manual one.I ordered it one day and it came the next and so far I am very happy with my choice! It looks nice, feels reassuringly heavy in the hand and most importantly of all,it prooduces a nice lot of pepper with just a couple of (very easy) turns! One reviewer commented that his only worked fine for about six months and that he had to keep taking it back to the shop to have the ceramic mechanism replaced. However another reviewer said that his was still working perfectly after two years' use. So all I can do is hope that it will continue to work as well as it does now. But since it states in the description that the ceramic crushgrind mechanism comes with a lifetime, I do not expect any problems with it and should there be any, I would expect T&G to rectify them free of charge. So I would happily recommend this grinder to anyone who wants a good quality pepper mill that produces a nice lot of pepper with very little effort!Another point worth mentioning is that although the title descrbes it as a Pepper Mill, the technical details state that it grinds pepper, salt, most spices and even coffee. And since the T&G CrushGrind Apollo Stainless Steel and Acrylic Salt mill is more expensive on Amazon, I would think that you could just buy two Pepper Mills and use one as a salt mill?

I've bought two pairs of Apollo mills now, one for my mother as a gift and, after being so impressed by them, one for myself.Firstly the mills are great to look at. All Stainless Steel, they stand out in any kitchen. They're also quite large, so hold a lot of product before needing to be refilled. They're very easy to use - the whole top half of the mill turns, meaning you don't have to struggle with a fiddly, small handle. They also have no spindle so you just pop the top off and pour in your product - very easy to fill up. Not a clue how they work without a spindle, but that's for someone else to worry about! The mechanism itself comes with a large number of settings, from quite coarse to fine, and no matter which I set it to the flow on each turn is very impressive, meaning only a few turns is necessary. These mills are quite expensive compared to some you can get, but they exude quality, deliver fantastically well, are incredibly easy to use, and with a lifetime guarantee I'm banking on never needing to buy another set of mills for myself again. My only gripe is that it's not particularly easy to tell the difference between Salt and Pepper, because it's only written in relatively small writing on the top. Still, this adds to the classy look I suppose, so it's not a huge issue.

The top of this pepper grinder comprises a removable stopper which then exposes a wide mouth with a shallow funnel into which you can pour peppercorns. Either a wide-mouth funnel or a V-channel in folded paper can help the filling process. The capacity is sufficiently large for several weeks' supply. Although usually used for black pepper, you can also use any colour or a mixture.Within the base is an adjustment knob which, if turned in one direction creates a very coarse grind suitable for steak au poivre or anything else where you may otherwise crush the peppercorns. Turned in the other direction it produces quite a fine grind suitable for flavouring a served meal or in general cooking where you want the flavour of the pepper but not the grit of a coarse grind. You may also use it in any position between the available extremes. One or two turns of the top is enough for many purposes but you can obviously have more or less. As it is manually operated rather than battery powered, it does require a little effort but it need not be difficult to use.Certainly not cheap, but not excessively priced, it is a good product and one that I have now owned for almost two years. Far better than the acrylic versions that need to be discarded after a year, this should probably last a lifetime.

I would agree with all the favourable comments. The only reason I'm breaking with the otherwise unanimous 5 star reviews is because I think the instructions don't make it properly clear about the correct procedure (as shown on their website video - not the video on this site) how to adjustthe grinding mechanism if it already full of salt. Turn the mill over with the mechanism on the top, rotate the body as if operating the mill. This releases the salt from around the ceramic wheel and then you can easily turn the grey adjusting knob. If you give the knob one turn and then operate the mill again you'll hear the pressure spring release and then you can very easily make the adjustment. If you just turn the adjustment knob without using this procedure it will usually only just unscrew without the lower part of the ceramic cutter disc moving away from the top part. This means that the gap between the two ceramic cutters then won't alter to allow larger grains of salt to flow out. Having said that I think the mill is very well designed and like others, is the only mill I've ever bought that actually consistently does the job it was intended to do.

My original November 2010 review:At last. Someone has made a pepper mill that works actually properly. Don't waste your mone on any other mill.Update July 2011, 8 months on:I am having problems with this mill. Mine slowly accumulates pepper dust beneath a plastic ring seal at the base. Then when enough pepper has built up, the ring pops off without warning dumping it all over your food. This has happened 3 times now, which is huge disapointment as I really like the mill when it works as it is meant to. I will go back to the manufacturer to query the problem but it looks like my quest for a decent pepper mill continues...Further update July 2011:Company have been excellent so far. Very apologetic, reminded me the mill has a lifetime guarantee (I forgot), have issued a prepaid return label and have promised to sort the problem out. Confidence being restored. Have sent it back and await developments.Final (hopefully) update July 2011:Pepper mill has arrived back again after a couple of days with a very nice letter from T&G. New mechanism installed and all seems to be well again.

I'm a big fan of the Apollo, but they don't last forever. The guarantee is a bit sneaky because it applies only to the actual ceramic grinding section itself, not to the parts attached to that, and this is where there can be problems. After about 3 years of daily use, a plastic ring on the bottom fell out and dumped a whole load of pepper onto the food. However, I manged to fix this. The problem is caused by pepper building up behind the ring. If you carefully unscrew the grey knob - holding the mill upside down so that a spring inside doesn't fall out, you can service the mill, cleaning out the build-up of pepper, screwing back the grey knob, and snapping the ring back into place. Now after 4 years of daily use I've had a more serious problem with the acrylic top section failing to engage with the grinder mechanism. Have managed to mend this too, but wonder how long before it happens again. Even so, I still find this the best pepper mill on the market. Perhaps I should also consider becoming a professional peppermill engineer!

I'm one of those people referred to in the video who have owned scores of unsatisfactory pepper mills over the years. This one seemed expensive so I was hesitant to buy it. In the end I was swayed by the video, largely positive reviews and the fact it is made out of stainless steel instead of perspex that has always shattered on other mills I've bought. The CrushGrind feels very well made, seems worth the money and I must say it works brilliantly. There are three great things about it. Firstly it is much easier to fill than the type that has a central spindle. Secondly you get loads of pepper per twist compared with anything else I've used. Thirdly the way you can adjust the coarseness of the grind is fantastic. All the other mills I've ever owned have packed in due to the spindle or the body of the mill itself breaking rather than the grinding mechanism failing (the only part that is usually guaranteed).Time will tell if the product lasts as long as the high build quality suggests.

Reviewing this item is incredibly easy. This Pepper Mill is quite simply the single best item I have ever bought for my kitchen. Other mills don't even come close to the quality and efficiency of this product. It is a sheer delight to use. The 'secret' is that it uses a completely different system of 'grinding'. In essence it doesn't grind in the same way as other mills .... it uses ceramic discs to 'crush' the peppercorns into a wonderfully aromatic fine dust the consistency of which can be adjusted on the base of the mill.It may seem expensive but trust me it's not .... the build quality is exceptional and it has a lifetime guarantee. There is also the added advantage that you can refill the unit really easily (in about 5 seconds)by simply removing the top ... because there is no central 'rod' to get in the way.If I could give it six stars I would.Just buy one .... I promise you won't regret it.

I've bought many salt and pepper grinders over the years only for them to break or corrode. This one is by far the best. I've only had it a week but from the start I could tell that it was going to be a a solid and reliable grinder.Speaking of solid, it is noticably heavier than my previous ones and feels very reassuring. I assume the manufacturers have gone for a ceramic grinding mechanism so the salt does not corrode it? Just guessing, as previous grinders have turned green over time as they reacted with the salt.More importantly, the stream of salt or pepper is substantial. It just pours out! Again, this is in stark contrast to previous models. You can also control the grain size by adjusting the dial underneath.Inspired.OK, I've only had it a week or so but I firmly believe these have been built to last (hence the silly price). Let's hope these are the only ones I'll ever need.

I bought this, as when it's not in use, it's inverted i.e. salt does not escape when standing on the table, like most other brands do; I'm forever cleaning the wasted salt up AND the metal grinding mechanisms on most other salt mills tend to rust with the chemical reaction of salt with any kind of metal. With the ceramic mechanism, I can grind VERY finely with a very good yield i.e. you don't have to twist it incessantly for a lot of ground sea salt to be spread on your food. It's easier to fill than my other salt mill, but still not as easy as I would like i.e. you can use a teaspoon to fill it so the opening is larger AND it is without that aggravating metal bar in most other salt/pepper mills.I've been using the Cornish Sea Salt brand in this product, which is somewhat moist and sticks to the walls of the glass container, but the ceramic grinder works well with this product.

These are undoubtedly excellent mills and if I do not add to others' praise it is simply to avoid repetition. I will however make a couple of observations to cover points I don't think have been mentioned by recent reviewers:1. They are very solidly constructed, which makes them heavier than the average mill. The shape however means they don't slip out of the hand easily2. They are 'fatter' than average. As a result, and with the materials being naturally a little slippery, I would not recommend them for people with gripping difficulties such as arthritis sufferers, where a smaller/grippier mill would be better (the T&G web site is a good place to review the entire range which uses this mechanism). If you are wondering how they fill, the metal cap is simply a bung with a silicone(?) ribbed seal. Look carefully at the pics and you can see it. This works well.

This is a great pepper grinder! Made of stainless steel and simply styled (if not a little plain) and effective. It's only 15cm high, so it's certainly not grandiose or impressive looking, but on the other hand, it doesn't take too much room on the table (or the cupboard) - it's about the size of a small (thin) 200ml water bottle. The grinding plates are very responsive and have a very satisfying feel to it. A variable dial on bottom allows you to set fine to coarse grains. Refilling is simple with an effective stopper on the top that simply pulls on/off.We also bought a second "pepper" grinder to use for salt, as the reviews for the matching salt grinder are not as good. Salt also grinds very, very well in the "pepper" grinder, you just need to mark the grinder as "salt".I've since sent a set to my brother, who's also very impressed.

Finally, a pepper mill that works consistently and effectively! Great design too. Ergonomic to use and practical to refill. The adjustment at the bottom is simple and easy to use. Looks very stylish in a modern kitchen. Not sure why other people have complained about telling the difference between the salt and the pepper mill - I think its quite obvious myself, just look at the top and it tells you! Yes, they are both exactly the same grinder but it makes sense to buy the respective "salt" and "pepper" grinder to have the definitive markings on the top. Top tip: if you are worried about unsightly finger marks all over the stainless steel, put some baby oil on a cloth and gently smear it all over the grinder and this will never be a problem again (I do this to all my stainless steel appliances / bins / even the kettle and toaster!).
