I am used to a taller peppermill, but sometimes the table display calls for less.✤ COLE & MASON✤ SHERWOOD✤ PEPPERMILL‘Made in China’~ COLOUR : BEECH with BLACK GLOSS finish~ SIZE : 120 mm‘Lifetime mechanism guaranteeWood sourced from a sustainable source’ooOooUnusually for a Cole & Mason product, in my experience, the peppermill comes rather unceremoniously in a plastic-type bag and in a paper-lined cardboard outer for safe transit. It comes with a little multilingual leaflet, but this is limited in terms of use & care instructions and customers are directed to the website for further details (although this one isn’t currently featured).A reasonable weight in hand when empty, the peppermill stands around 12 cm high allowing for the protrusion of the SILVER coloured screw that has a ‘P’ in the centre. The base diameter is around 5 cm, but the overall width extends to around 6 cm at the top.'COLE & MASON' is on the front but quite subdued in a SILVER-GREY colour. The mill splits into three to be able to fill with whole peppercorns. The SILVER coloured screw unscrews, then the BLACK rounded top section simply lifts off to reveal the slim chamber. Care needs to be taken not to overfill or the BLACK top won’t go back on low enough with enough thread for replacing the shiny screw, which also acts as a grind adjuster. On the finest setting, I do find there are still some largish flakes but that doesn’t worry me in my pasta dishes or on top of my sweetcorn or cauliflower. There can be some residue from the base so I tend to stand mine on a plate after use.As it is not a transparent body, it is not obvious when it is running low on peppercorns especially as this size doesn’t hold that many to add to the weight. The glossy finish does tend to pick up any speck or fingerprint but buffs up easily, also in my experience.

This is quite a small pepper mill, in the world of pepper mills. If you’re a fan of pepper on every meal, you might want to consider something bigger, but if space is at a premium and you favour the classic look, then this Sherwood mill from Cole & Mason is a quality device. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives out there, and they will grind pepper just as this one will, but they won’t all have the feel and finish of this one. For some people, the application of salt and pepper to their meal is a ritual, something that they take great pleasure in, so why not have a good quality pepper mill to act out the ritual with? The only downsides are that being the classic-style,you can’t see how many peppercorns you’ve got left. Also it doesn’t take many peppercorns to fill it, so depending on the size pack that you buy, you might end up having the remaining quantity taking up room in your cupboard as well, potentially defeating the object of having such a dinky mill. There are no coarseness adjustments, it’s a one-grind-fits-all action. Finally, the ‘P’ indicator on the top of the screw shaft is not super-clear, so those who choose to purchase the Salt mill as well might find it hard to distinguish between the two.Ultimately, it’s a fairly expensive and small-in-stature mill in the classic style that is well-made and does its singular job well.

For £20 this is rather an expensive little pepper grinder but it is robust and likely to last a long time. I'm not a pepper grinder enthusiast but apparently the name 'Cole and Mason' means good quality, and the appearance of this item is shiny black with metal inside and feels top of the range. It is quite tiny so you won't get many peppercorns inside, and because it's not transparent you won't know how much you've got left until you remove the top, so it is probably best used on the table rather than in the kitchen whilst cooking. It comes with a little shiny black booklet attached to it and it was from reading this that I found out that there are two settings, course grinding and fine grinding, achieved by turning the knob on the top (which incidentally has a letter P on it and I believe is part of a salt and pepper set). I wasn't happy with the packaging - it arrived in a huge box which contained packaging paper and a smaller box which also contained packaging paper, so even though well protected it is quite a waste of cardboard and paper. A box at least 12" x 5" x 9" for a little pepper grinder about 5" x 2" diameter. Hmmm.

This is a review of a high quality pepper mill, which comes with a glossy black finish. However, standing at just 12cm tall, it is pretty small and it is clear that it will need to be refilled regularly, if used on a daily basis. This might not be a huge issue for some, but I feel that a larger (standard sized) pepper mill would have been much more beneficial and in addition, would also have been easier to grip and use.I'm not entirely sure why these are sold as separate salt and pepper mills, as I would have thought that the majority of people would have wanted a matching set. Maybe I'm not in line with the majority view...As far as the functionality of the mills go,there is not much to comment on here as they function no better and no worse than other mills which I have used however, in use, it does emit some rather ear piercing squeaks, which could get rather annoying. In summary, is a well finished pepper mill, which functions well and certainly looks the part. However, it is very small and you may wish to buy a bigger size, if it is to be used regularly.

Proportionally awkward to me, a bit shorter than it feels like it ought to be for the width, but I appreciate that's the styling. Internally very well made with proper stone to grind against, it's not the easiest to take apart to refill even less to clean - I get the feeling you probably don't clean it - it's a screw you pull out to reveal the top end rather than the bottom. There's no cover on the bottom as it stores with that pointing downwards. I realise I'm describing a very normal usual pepper mill but it's worth being quite detailed as they can vary including the last ones I reviewed which stored upright with the grinder upwards!Overall it's a solid basic grinder but a very good qualitywell made one that looks very durable and isn't plastic!

A compact yet stylish product, the 'Cole & Mason Sherwood Pepper Mill, Black Gloss, 120 mm' is a 12cm-high shiny black wooden pepper mill in a traditional shape. It has a carbon steel blade (so don't use it for salt, it will corrode) and, as with most (possibly all?) of the Cole & Mason range of pepper mills, the blade is designed to strip the peppercorns rather than crush them, purportedly with better results. The mechanism is smooth and the mill simple to both fill and adjust. It is lighter than larger mills, so perhaps more suited to use by people with physical challenges.Looks great and works well, excellent pepper mill.

This is a cracking pepper mill. The grinding mechanism works a treat and the pepper is just the right consistency - not too fine but with a decent enough amount of body to it. The packaging is pretty much non existent and you don’t get any pepper corns. However, the finish to the mill is really nice - wood with a glossy finish. There is a salt and pepper gift set but it doesn’t appear to come in this size. It’s a 120mm, the smallest of 3 possible sizes. Although it’s the smallest it’s still an okay size and fairly chunky and substantial. You can also get a matching identical salt mill for the same price. Recommended.

This pepper mill seems to be made of wood and feels well made although mine does have one tiny dimple of an imperfection but I guess that is expected with naturally derived materials. The finish is a like a black piano finish. It is lovely but this kid of finish does lend itself to fingerprint marks so will need to be cleaned often. This is a pepper mill and not made for Salt. Using salt in this will cause the mechanisms to rust, so do not buy this as a salt grinder. The grind itself feels well constructed with the grind being easily to adjusted by tightening the top bolt or loosening it.

This is a good quality item... apparently Cole & Mason are a respected brand and I can see why. Although this is just a simple everyday kitchen item it feels robust and extremely tactile. The high gloss black finish looks good too.The top comes off for filling and provides a surprisingly wide opening for refilling. There is 2 settings depending on how coarse a grind you want. I assume this is part of a 2part set ( with a salt container) although it stands perfectly acceptable on its own.Looks great, feels great, does the job. What more could you want?

All of my salt/pepper grinders are Cole and Mason. They've never let me down and just keep going.I use this little grinder as my travelling one. If I'm away and having to eat on the go, it's the perfect size for a suitcase or overnight bag. Kept in a zip-lock bag to stop leaks, it means I can have fresh ground pepper when I want. I know this sounds odd, but hey.The wood finish is pleasing to use and the action smooth. It is supplied empty but that's fine as I know the corns have not been sat in a warehouse for years.

The quality of this is really good. It's beautifully finished, and the mechanism works really well. This doesn't crush the peppercorns, it shaves them. There are two settings; fine and coarse. I really like this as the particles are smaller and I find it more palatable than big lumps of peppercorn on your food. It's easy to fill, has a good black glossy finish, and the grinding mechanism is really high quality. A good product from a trusted brand. Complete the set with matching salt grinder.

This is a small mill that's the right size for the table. It feels good to hold and use. The mechanism is smooth and the grind gives pepper with just the right amount of body to it.The black gloss finish is easy to wipe clean but has a bit of a plastic look to it. It's on the pricey side but it has a solid and robust feel to it and I fully expect this to last for years. I hope the finish does not chip over time.

Beautifully made and finished grinders. Adjustable grinding coarseness and a really good grinding 'feel'. I'd say the colour is a little more caramel than on the Amazon picture - I think the Cole and Mason website has a more accurate colour representation.Would be 5 stars but the 'S' and 'P' on the metal top of the grinders is a little hard to read from some angles

A great pepper grinder that doesn't get in the way in my small kitchen. The grinder can do fine grinding and fairly course. I have noticed that the grinding part is metal, whereas ones I have had before have been either plastic or other material. It should last for a long time hence the long guarantee. The small grinder is pricey but is well constructed and sturdy.

This is a classic looking pepper mill from a brand with a reputation for making good quality grinders. It works extremely well and is very easy to fill and to adjust the grind on. The style is simple and elegant, if somewhat old fashioned, but the real advantage for me is that there is not much to go wrong - no batteries etc! Very pleased.
