I was looking forward to seeing what these would be like, given that the most I've ever spent on salt & pepper mills, is a couple of quid at the supermarket. The set comes boxed and the mills have a decent weight to them - they are acrylic though, not glass. They are easy to "operate" and refill: you just twist the little chrome cap at the top and this will let you control the coarseness of the salt & pepper. This feature, I love as we've always had separate mills in our home, which we can now do away with. It's brilliant being able to choose whether you use fine or coarse salt & pepper and this does effect the taste. To me,the salt in particular tastes superior to our usual salt - it seems softer somehow too and it really brings out the flavour (really good over homemade Italian breads)I'm disappointed that the mills are only half-filled, a pity considering the price. I'm sure the contents will last a while but it will be interesting to see what the salt & pepper will taste like when we replace it with whatever's available: is it the product itself that tastes so good, or is it the precision cutting system that makes the product taste good (I hope it's the latter)To sum up... Definitely pricey (although having looked, I've now seen even pricier sets!) I admittedly wouldn't have bought these for myself before - I would spend the extra money now, having used them. I love being able to control how coarse the salt & pepper is and it really adds a depth of flavour to your cooking. The set would make a nice little gift for someone who can appreciate why these salt & pepper mills are superior to the cheaper brands you usually find in the supermarket.

We are not a salt and pepper family, none of us would dream of adding salt and pepper to a meal, but when you have guests you can't really put the plastic canister of salt that you bought from the supermarket on the table nor can you give them one of those cardboard tubes of pepper to spice up their food. Cheap salt and pepper dispensers have a tendency to look exactly that - cheap, so these Cole & Mason mills have provided us with an ideal accompaniment for our dining table. They are not particularly cheap, but this is compensated for by their good looks, practicability and durability. The first thing that struck me was that they look good; they are, of course, primarily designed to dispense salt and pepper but they are also designed to look pleasing to the eye. They are practical but they are sexy without being neither obtrusive nor pretentious. Secondly, they work well. I have used peppermills that were difficult to turn, but these aren't and have a relatively smooth action. The mechanism to allow the user to adjust them to suit their particular taste preference is simple to use as well. Thirdly, they are sturdily made and they look as if they are built to last.To sum up this is an excellent product that I have been very pleased with. Also, because they are simply, but attractively packed I would think that, with one eye in Christmas, they would make a great gift.

First off, having read some of the other reviews - I found it interesting that some people had viewed these as being 1/3 pre-filled in a positive way, and others had moaned that they weren't completely full....I guess it's just a 'glass half full' kind of thing!! (I did feel that people who took a star off for the mills not being completely full were rather mean, and should have looked at it as getting an bonus by having any in there at all - I suspect the manufacturer puts in enough to test the mechanism works properly).Anyway, moving along... as soon as you look at the packet these mills come in, you can tell you have purchased a quality product. Very nicely packaged, easy to open and get to grips with straight away. Thanks to the manufacturers part-filling them, you can start seasoning immediately. They look good and would be suitable for any kitchen/dining room - a pleasant design, not to trendy or old fashioned, so would mingle well with any dinnerware. The mills work wonderfully - I have never had such finely ground salt and pepper before - it's actually a pleasure to season a meal (during or after cooking) and know you are distributing finely ground salt or pepper evenly.I can't recommend these highly enough, and will definitely be purchasing at least one more set as a gift for my mum!!

These come in a nice presentation box with a see thru front. The actual mills are made of a very clear acrylic material and are completely see thru. The design is fairly traditional though to my eyes they have a slightly 'industrial' look to them. Very attractive though and its great to be able to see how much is left inside. Also nice to see you've used a good quality condiment too :-)They come with Cole and Mason's "Precision Mechanism" that promises durability and provides very good grinding, whether coarse or fine. Their see thru design makes it easy to see if any particles have got stuck. The opening is a little small, making refilling a little tricky but 'leakage'when not in use is very limited. They are just over 4 inches in height and are very easy to hold and operate. They come about a 3rd full with good quality salt and pepper. My wife and I use them for every day use and are very pleased with them; they would make a good house warming gift or even a fairly cheap wedding present.I'd have given them 5 stars but the truly great Gourmet Windsor Black Gloss Mills, also from Cole and Mason are available for about the same (discounted) price and they are a class above these.Still a great 4 star product, well worth considering.

This is a well-known brand, so one would expect decent quality, and I am duly impressed with these. I know they are only plastic, but they seem robust and a nice, elegant shape - elegant enough, I'm sure, for all but the most formal of dinner parties, and obviously great for everyday use. Being transparent, you will never suffer that middle-class crisis of reaching for the salt/pepper and finding that the pot is empty!!I have never had much luck with salt mills, as usually the grinder is plastic, and soon loses its edge. These are ceramic, and should be much more hard-wearing - certainly so far so good. The pepper one is metal, and no doubt fine too. What I particularly like is that you get a goodly quantity with each turn,so if you're cooking you don't get tendonitis of the wrist trying to add enough pepper! The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is that although the fineness of the grind is adjustable (you tighten/loosen the knob on the top), there doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference between coarse and fine. Doesn't matter much to me personally, but I offer the info anyway! (The salt is quite fine anyway, btw!)Recommended, and nicely presented, so would make a good gift.

My problem with pepper grinders is that I buy them and they work wonderfully, but six months or a year down the line they pack up. Cole and Mason is famous for its pepper mills, and I have owned quite a few. They have all eventually stopped working. So I am posting this review, and will update it if and when they give up. If you are reading this review 2 years from now and it has not been updated, then these are excellent salt and pepper grinders. At the moment however: the graters are attractive, seem to stay clean even with daily handling, and grind the pepper and salt efficiently. They claim to be easily adjusted for fine or coarse grating, though nowhere in the instructions does it tell you how to do this.I have tried loosening the screw on the top, but find the pepper grind is not really that adjustable, so can only give these 4 stars. The salt grinder is excellent, but again I have not been able to adjust the grind - though I am not as fussy with salt as I am with pepper. They grind well, are attractive and unobtrusive on the table, but only time will tell if they really last a lifetime.

I've owned several salt and pepper mills over the years, wooden, plastic, battery powered and brass. My favorite will always be a brass set I bought over 20 years ago which I've had to retire as they were just too small.I first came across Cole and Mason about five years ago when I purchase a set as a wedding gift. I was impressed with their quality then, as I am now. This set feels well constructed from the moment you open them.On the cheaper sets you tend to get some play in the construction and sometimes the grinding mechanism. I've also found on the cheaper grinders, this play often leads to a shortening of the life of the grinder. With Cole and Mason the grinders feel secure, robust and well made. The grinders are easily refilled, easily adjusted to get your desired coarseness and are easily used, dispensing an even coating of either salt or pepper. This particular set also comes in a very nice presentaion box so is very suited as a gift. So, all in all, a little bit pricier than some others, but a well constructed set that will give many years service.

These mills look crystal-clear and better than you would expect from the illustrations. Made of acrylic, they look good and work very well. Their transparency allows you to see exactly how much you have left and also to see the mechanism in action. That means you can see if anything is stuck - which is not so easy with wooden mills, for example.Traditionally, wood has been the material of choice for this kind of item - but these do have distinct advantages, as mentioned above and do look just as good, in their own way. Like all such mills though, the advantage is in being able to choose your own salt and pepper grains, then can mill them as finely or as coarsely as you like. It was nice though, that some were included so that you could try the mills straight away.In the kitchen, these fit in very well alongside other spice jars and can be kept for cooking or could sit quite happily on the table. Overall, high quality items made with precision and with an impeccable pedigree from a renowned, English company - maybe losing a star though, for being made in China.

And especially given the money, there is little to complain about here and a lot to like. These salt and pepper mills come from a UK company with solid credentials, having made products along these lines since the early 20th century. They are relatively compact, so they take up little space in cupboard or on table, but the capacity is surprisingly decent. The grinding mechanism is efficient (better than some far more expensive ones I've had the dubious 'pleasure' of using), the action is quite positive with little lateral play, and they are very nicely put together, with a good finish to the acrylic & exposed metal. I haven't encountered any problems with excess ground seasoning falling out of the bases. The box notes that when being re-filled, care must be taken not to accidentally add salt to the pepper grinder, as it will damage the mechanism, long-term. Fair enough. The weight is modest; given the size and the materials used, they're not going to be especially heavy, but they are not over-light. All in all, I'm happy with them, and they're in daily use.

I have not been happy in the past with the performance of a pair of electric mills, and a manual combined salt and pepper grinder in a double tier. I'm not sure how long a lifetime is envisaged, but Cole & Mason must have confidence in the product to refer to "lifetime performance". This is not exactly a guarantee, but certainly as separate salt and pepper mills they appear robust and practical - as well as having a pleasingly elegant and stylish a design. Unlike my electric mills which either clog or over-supply, and the combined unit that dribbles contents when being turned over, with these Cole & Mason salt and pepper mills there is no over-ejection and the flow of salt or pepper is readily controlled, and the grinders may be adjusted for fine or course. These are great 5-star grinders.

This mill set is an attractive and useful addition to the dining table. The clear acrylic bodies are stout and sturdy, with a curvy ergonomic shape. The grain is adjustable, so you can have finer or rougher grind. In a nice touch, they come pre-filled with rock salt and peppercorns, so you can use it right away. The pleasant packaging makes it a good option as a gift, too.I'm really happy with the product, but Amazon had it badly overpackaged, which I find difficult to accept from an environmental point of view. The already-boxed product was boxed inside another box of similar size - which was then boxed into a much bigger box, with a lot of padding. I can understand protecting the product from damage, but it was disproportionately so.

This gift boxed set of a salt grinder and black pepper grinder would make a good present. The grinders are made of clear acrylic material and are an attractive shape. They arrive in the package partly filled. There are no instructions included about how to refill, but it didn't take me long to figure out that you unscrew the chrome coloured knob on the top which allows you to remove the top part of the grinder and the metal shaft, allowing you to top up. Both salt and pepper are quite finely ground and the mechanism seems quite robust. If you are in the market for a salt and pepper set, then this one will look classy in your kitchen and works well. Recommended.

Although made of acrylic, this Cole & Mason salt and pepper mill set is stylish at the table and doesn't look obtrusive like some of the larger ones can. They feel good to handle, are not too bulky and just the right amount of salt and pepper is dispensed with an easy twist of the top.I especially like the generous size of the refill holes. Adding more peppercorns is so easy with this, unlike some sets where you either have to feed them into the mill via a folded piece of paper or buy a small funnel.I can't find fault with this salt and pepper mill set. It's attractive to look at, refills and dispenses well and has the feeling of durability.

Love this salt and pepper mill set! Having had a previous set from another brand which actually caused more pain than anything when trying to dispense either salt or pepper, this set provides the complete opposite. It's so easy to grind by twisting the top. The only thing is you do need to make sure your hands and clean and dry as there's nothing to grip when twisting. It's also very easy to adjust the coarseness of either set although with the coarse grind it's a bit hit and miss as you usually end up with a lot of fine salt. There is definitely a huge difference in quality between this and the cheap set I had. I'd highly recommend this one.

These Cole & Mason Salt and Pepper mills are the sort of simply elegant, well made product that there's always room for in my kitchen. They stand about 13 CMs tall and come half filled with the relevant rock salt and peppercorns. Because they are made of clear acrylic you can see instantly whether you're reaching for the salt or the pepper and also how much you've got left in the mill. The mechanism is the really impressive part of any Cole & Mason mill and these are no exception; with a simple twist of the knob on the top rock salt and peppercorn can be coarse and gritty, fine as dust or anywhere in between.
