The colour is exactly as is shown although it took a while for me to realise that its not sand coloured but Sand Pm has a space missing, it really should read as S(alt) and P(epper) m(ill) although it should actually say Pepper mill since it is not a salt mill, having got that out of the way......A pepper mill with very nice smooth lines, solid beech construction with a reasonable capacity. A positive and adjustable action dispenses pepper via Cole & Mason's "Precision System" which apparently doesn't crush the peppercorns, but 'strips' then to allow more of the flavour than simply grinding. This is achieved using their featured - hardened carbon steel mechanism, The grind - sorry - 'strip'is adjustable using the chrome knob on the top which will also identify whether it is a salt or pepper dispenser with an S or a P. The two are not interchangeable inasmuch as the Pepper Mill will corrode if it's used for salt, and if the Salt mill is used for peppercorns, it will no doubt crush instead of strip since it uses a 'diamond cut ceramic mechanism' to crush the sea salt pieces down. Both however, have a 'lifetime guarantee', though it doesn't say exactly who's lifetime, presumably its whatever Cole & Mason deem to be the working life of the mechanism. Whatever it means the carbon steel appears robust and long lasting, so we're okay there. I can't comment on the ceramic mechanism. The Peppermill looks the business and it certainly dispenses pepper nicely. It is very well made using what appears to be premium parts.

This is the fourth Cole and Mason product I have tried and tested for the Vine programme. This grinder is very well made and looks great in a sort of sand coloured wood. It does not come in a nice presentation box, which all the other C & M have had. The grinder also does not come with any salt crystals or peppercorns. All the other C & M products have come with small amounts of pepper or salt. It sits perfectly on a dinner table, with the grinding mechanism is on the bottom of the unit. This is a slightly inferior design to the last set, with the grinding mech on the top. When it is on the bottom, pieces of salt or pepper fall out. It is best to place it on a Cole and Mason wooden holder, which you can buy separately. You fill the unit, by unscrewing the top. The grinding mechanism is very well made and does a very good job and you can adjust the coarseness of the grind. The unit is very well made from wood and stainless steel (Grinding mechanism) and should last a long time in normal use.I am more than happy to recommend this well made unit. There is very little I can say, that has not already been said about this superb product. Firstly they are made and feel to be of super quality. They grind perfectly and the "size" of grind can be adapted by turning the screw system. The grinding screw system does not come loose with use and are superior in every way to any salt and pepper grinders I have used in the past. They also come in a beautiful gift box and will make a great gift.Highly recommended.

Cole & Mason are well known for quality kitchen products, and this item is no exception. Consequently, the price tag of £26.99 at time of writing may seem rather steep. However, for serious cooks (and eaters!) there is much to recommend this product. Unfortunately it does not come in a special presentation box, which does seem like it would be warranted. However the mill itself is very smart, a classic capstan shape in lightly stained, sustainable beech wood, and feels very solid in use. The mechanisms (carbon steel for pepper, ceramic for salt) come with a lifetime guarantee, the coarseness of the grind is fully adjustable and in fact it's designed with a special mechanism whereby peppercornsare "stripped" rather than ground for maximum flavour - an unusual detail which will be much appreciated. It fills from the top and everything is quite straightforward, even down to the "P" or "S" on the knob. In use, it is very satisfying and really does have the weight and substance of a top quality item as well as being a tactile object for the table. The style will suit modern kitchens just as well as traditional ones, and the price tag seems much more reasonable when one realises this mill will probably outlive me!

This is a very fine product, it is has a very fine set of works/mechanism, producing great fine pepper flecks, and a good build which makes it a very nice ornamental object besides its actual function. Every kitchen should have one or an approximation of it to improve meals or to use in cooking (I have found it great for using in the preparation of soups, stews and seasoning steaks or making steak sauces, all of which I like the the addition of a little cracked black pepper). It is about the right size of a pepper mill too, not too large or like some oversize sorts I have seen waiters use in some up market restaurants (which I often think have a sort of comic effect and make me smile)but which would be out of place in a home kitchen in my humble opinion. It is also larger than a small table salt or pepper shaker or mini-mill, which I think is good since it is a sort of auspicious, fine item and therefore deserves to be noticeable and noteworthy among the other kitchen craft tools of chef-ery.

This is a very nice looking and feeling pepper mill, the wood being smooth and strangely stroke-able. The form is simple and elegant, with the nice chrome highlights complimenting the wood beautifully. The milling action is tight and without much resistance, with the pepper comes out in very uniform sized pieces. You really feel that the action is way better than entry level mills and it feels solid enough to last for a long time. The only possible annoyance I can see is that the reservoir inside the mill is really quite small. The wood is pretty thick, which is good for quality and durability, but it reduces how much pepper you can put in in one go.I really like this mill, it has great proportions, lovely materials and a great grind. Highly recommended.

Cole & Mason is a well known brand and people know the quality that they can expect. Having previously owned another C&M pepper mill, I feel this is of superior quality. The grinding (or slicing, as they say) action is very smooth and even my four year old daughter can do it with no problem. The material looks and feels amazing - solid wood with chrome effects. You can adjust the strip to change the coarseness of the pepper very easily. I prefer it quite coarse but my wife prefers it less so. Adding pepper brings out other qualities of the food and we barely ever eat anything without adding some! The only downside is that it doesn't come in a nice presentation box, as the previous pepper mill did,so it doesn't really work as a present, which is a shame.

Proportionally awkward to me, a bit shorter than it feels like it ought to be for the width, but I appreciate that's the styling. Internally very well made with proper stone to grind against, it's not the easiest to take apart to refill even less to clean - I get the feeling you probably don't clean it - it's a screw you pull out to reveal the top end rather than the bottom. There's no cover on the bottom as it stores with that pointing downwards. I realise I'm describing a very normal usual pepper mill but it's worth being quite detailed as they can vary including the last ones I reviewed which stored upright with the grinder upwards!Overall it's a solid basic grinder but a very good qualitywell made one that looks very durable and isn't plastic!

Cole & Mason's salt and pepper mills are always beautifully crafted, solid pieces suitable for any dining setting. This is no exception; made from solid beech in an attractive light colour, with gorgeously turned metal trim. Remove the metal screw at the top, remove the top piece and fill with your chosen peppercorns (or salt) not quite to the brim, to allow the wooden top to seat comfortably. Adjusting the screw will alter the size of the pepper from fine to course. The grinding mechanism at the base of the unit is also very well made. There is no doubt that it's beautifully made, and will probably last, if not a lifetime then certainly many, many years; so if at first the price seems high,in this instance you really do get what you pay for.

That’ll teach me!I misread the description and expected a pepper mill that was about 2 feet long (the style used in some restaurants) but it’s not 20 inches long (as I had misread), it’s just 20 cms! (about 7-8 inches), which is a decent height for a standard pepper mill, but wow, how did I get that so wrong!Anyways, there’s no real disappointment as this is a great grinder; it’s smooth both in the way it feels and operates (grinds) and it has a light but robust build quality to it too which is reassuring. So okay, I’m not going to have a feature-piece at the dinner table now, so I’ll just have to find another conversation starter! In the meantime this is a great little adjustable peppercorngrinder.

Medium sized pepper grinder, 6.3 x 6.3 x 20 cm, in a smooth, minimalist design. I particularly like the Beech colour which is a mid-brown that should suit any dinner service. The grinding mechanism is smooth, easy to use and adjustable to your own personal preference. Fills from the top just unscrew the metal stud on the top, lift off the lid and pour in the peppercorns. A quality item that's a good weight and shaped to fit nicely in the hand.My only niggles; the grinder is packed inside a plain, card box with the Cole and Mason logo printed to the front which. for me, doesn't make for an attractive presentation and there aren't any peppercorns or salt crystals included.

This is definitely one of those products where you see the price and think,"Good grief that seems a bit steep". The fact is though that it also seems like on of those things where twenty five years down the line it'll still be sat in your kitchen. The build quality is lovely, with a smooth wood finish and metal accents to offset it. The mechanism seems sturdily put together, and it certainly works as it should. Simply tighten or loosen the knob on top to change the fineness of your pepper. Just make sure not to put salt in it as the salt would apparently corrode the internals, but luckily there's a handy 'P' on the top to remind you. Really nice item.

This is a lovely pepper mill. The wood is smooth and an attractive colour. It is comfortable to grip and you can tell that quality materials have been used. It is the traditional design, where the screw in the top is used to both adjust the grind and refill the mill. I have tried and chucked out far too many pepper mills due to them not grinding well, or breaking after a few months. This one feels like it might be a keeper - at last. The grind setting goes from reasonably fine to big flakes. It won't do the fine dust that you get in pre-ground pepper from the supermarket. Like all mills of this design, it does leave a little pepper where it stands.

This is a brand with impeccable credentials- you know you're buying quality with Cole and Mason, and this seems a wholly reasonable price for such a well modelled and ergonomic kitchen essential that would make a fine housewarming gift. Other reviewers have described very eloquently the advanced mechanism that really makes the most of the flavour potential of your pepper. I am partially disabled, and found the action of this pepper Mill very easy to use, which is not the case with every other brand. I can see this being a feature of your kitchen for a very long time if not a lifetime : classic design and a winning product in every sense.

A compact yet stylish product, the 'Cole & Mason Sherwood Pepper Mill, Black Gloss, 120 mm' is a 12cm-high shiny black wooden pepper mill in a traditional shape. It has a carbon steel blade (so don't use it for salt, it will corrode) and, as with most (possibly all?) of the Cole & Mason range of pepper mills, the blade is designed to strip the peppercorns rather than crush them, purportedly with better results. The mechanism is smooth and the mill simple to both fill and adjust. It is lighter than larger mills, so perhaps more suited to use by people with physical challenges.Looks great and works well, excellent pepper mill.

This is a cracking pepper mill. The grinding mechanism works a treat and the pepper is just the right consistency - not too fine but with a decent enough amount of body to it. The packaging is pretty much non existent and you don’t get any pepper corns. However, the finish to the mill is really nice - wood with a glossy finish. There is a salt and pepper gift set but it doesn’t appear to come in this size. It’s a 120mm, the smallest of 3 possible sizes. Although it’s the smallest it’s still an okay size and fairly chunky and substantial. You can also get a matching identical salt mill for the same price. Recommended.
