My three year old loves Brio and has literally boxes of track and different accessories. This new Brio Smart Engine with Action Tunnels adds another dimension to play. In many ways it’s a fairly standard Brio battery powered train with buttons for forward stop and reverse on the top. The clever bit happens when the train goes under one of the Action Tunnels: The red tunnel makes the train stop - the lights turn off and a breaking sound is heard. The green tunnel makes the train stop and reverse - again accompanied by different light and sound effects. This set doesn’t come with any track, just the engine (you’ll need 2x AA batteries that are not supplied) and two action tunnels. It works with any of the normal Brio track though, although only Smart Tech trains will work with the Action Tunnels. We already have another Smart Tech set (33873) that came with a red train and a couple of extra bits and pieces, so it’s nice that this set features a blue train. Having both sets means that we can make bigger and more complex Smart Tech layouts with two trains running at the same time. It’s great to see them stopping at stations and reversing out of sidings. You can pick up the action tunnels and move them at any stage, and my son loves doing this. Making the train stop and reverse, and then moving the tunnel so that it stops and reverses again seconds later. As soon as I walk in from work my son grabs me and we’re down on the floor playing trains before I’ve even taken my coat off. It’s an absolute joy to see a child playing so happily with a toy - and I have to admit I love joining in.

Brio children's toys have always been known for good quality in the materials used and in the manufacture. They have never been famous for bargain-basement pricing, and that is as true this time as before. What is new this time is that Brio are joining in the smart-tech scene. A review should also point out that this little piece of train kit is not 'comprehensive'. It is compatible with other items in the Brio range, but if you want those you will have to pay again for them. What comes with this package is a smart locomotive and two smart tunnels, these very short, so that 'arches' might be a more descriptive term. The user can program the combination to give off lights, make noises, and shunt either backwards or forwards as determined by the smart arches in compliance with the pre-set programming. I'm prepared to award the full five stars for all this. I quite understand that other purchasers may want more for their money, but we are offered an honest deal that doesn't pretend to be more than it is, and I for one appreciate that. You will also have to provide your own batteries, but the set is regarded by the makers as safe and suitable for children aged 3 and over. How far over? When it comes to train sets who knows an upper age-limit? I might be interested myself.

My young nephew (he is just over two years old, so an adult was always in attendance) loves this! He has already has the standard wooden Brio trains and tracks - in fact, partially a set that I used when I was a little boy - and it's great that this much cleverer, technologically superior train and tunnels can be incorporated into older sets. Other reviews and descriptions tell how the train works in conjunction with the tunnels, so I'll just make some little notes about our experience with it. It can be a little tricky to fit the batteries into the compartment (it's very tight, and quite difficult to fix the battery compartment 'door' back into place - but this will probably get easier with use.We also found that you have to use fresh, new batteries for it to work reliably. The function/control of the train is pretty simple to understand, but challenging enough for a three year old, so has an educational benefit - and that you can switch around the tunnels whilst the train is in motion leads to satisfying extension of gameplay. Would definitely recommend this to traditional Brio lovers, as despite being electronic, it still has that solid, dependable feel of all Brio products.

My children (3 & 7) have always enjoyed playing with their Brio track and manually moving the trains around it, but the addition of this battery operated train and the two tunnels has bought a whole new dimension to the toy. The train takes two AA batteries (not supplied) and has three different control buttons on its roof, these buttons in conjunction with the tunnels make the train do different things, such as reverse when it passes a tunnel or play an announcement. My son quickly discovered if he placed one of the tunnels a certain distance from the end of the track he could allow the train to run independently and then automatically stop in the sidings before the track ran out.The only down side (and its a minor one) is that if you place the tunnel that makes the train reverse too close to the bottom of a bridge the train has trouble backing up the bridge from a standing start, but that's all part of the learning process. If you already have a Brio set I would definitely recommend this set as a really fun addition.

Brio is brilliant! The endless track combinations and imagination that goes into the children's play is superb. Our six and four year old love it. We recently picked up a set of the Smart Tech Brio railway station and got this to add to the set and already owned "old school" Brio. The train and two tunnels included work perfectly with the Smart Tech set we had previously acquired. The extra variety the extra tunnels add is nice however as a starter set this would be a poor choice as it is just the one Smart train and two tunnels. Please see the link below for a better starter set. It does still seem strange to me adding in lights, sound and movement for the children rather than stick with imagination doing that for them. When the batteries eventually run out the tunnels will still look cool but the train may have a more limited appeal until me motivate to replace the batteries.https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MTAV5JM

You get 3 pieces in this "starter pack" a train (which takes 2 AA batteries. Not included) and two tunnels. On ethat makes the train's lights flash as it goes through it and one that makes the train stop and back up after it goes through it. The tunnels don't need batteries. This si a great addition to your Brio set if you want to add some extra fun and a battery propelled train (have to say it's not very fast). It goes on all BRio track layouts and also works on Brio compatible tracks (we bought some compatible track to expand our childrens layout, even though the quality wasn't quite as good in order to save some money but give them a big lot tracks).NIce piece of kit .More budhet friendly then the other kit with this train but 3 tunnels and few bits and bobs that comes in just over the £70 mark.

My son has had Brio trains for years. I remember when they became "technical" and started to make noises and have lights. Things have moved on even more now in Wooden Train World and these latest Brio engines are "smart".This engine (no carriages) is Smart. The set also includes two smart bridges . These bridges make the trains stop/start, make noises, etc depending on how they are programmed. The set doesn't come with any track but presumably the purchasers of this set will already have plenty of track. As always with Brio, the build quality is superb and you know the train will last for years.Brio always fires the imagination and despite now being "Smart Tech" they are reasurringly old-fashioned toys to be played with and enjoyed. Two AA batteries (not supplied)are required for the train.

This is a pretty nifty Brio train with two ‘gates’. The train has RFID embedded in it, so that when it passes under the gates, it will either stop (red gate) or pass through and then reverse back again (green gate). The train itself has three buttons on top for go, stop and reverse – clever stuff! The train needs two AA batteries (not supplied) and getting them into the train is a bit of a faff – there’s a relatively long screw that needs to come out, but you shouldn’t need to do it too often.Otherwise, it does what it says on the tin – this doesn’t come with any actual wooden train track, but fits onto existing brio. Very jazzy! My only reservation is that it’s quite pricey ...but isn’t all Brio?

I anticipated that this would be a good quality product. We have lots of BRIO and my sons have enjoyed playing with it, even now, at 6 and 9. They were excited to play with the new "Smart" set. We were not disappointed. The pieces are robust, colourful and well-made. Included is a 1x Smart Engine and 2x Smart Tech Arches. The loco is powered by 2 AA batteries (not included) and moves forwards and backwards. The smart features set off lights, sounds (which are not too loud) and actions. BRIO is not cheap, but it's indestructible/heirloom quality. You'll be handing it on to friends and family when you're done. A great addition to your Brio set.

Any kid who loves trains will love this. I think our house could become one big track the amount we have so was wary abput whether we needed anymore. The great thing about this is that the red tunnel makes the train stop, and the green one makes it reverse, both with sound effects. Brio have made a new kind of product to keep kids and adults enthralled with their toys - really can't recommend their train sets more highly, yes they are expensive but are great quality and will see an entire family of kids as well as I suspect grandkids!

We got the Engine with Action Tunnels after having such fun with the Smart Tech railway set. The kids really can’t get enough of playing with the different options offered - it’s almost like introducing programming logic into your kid's play. Making the trains stop, start, go slow, turn on the lights or make a sound, it adds a new dimension to playing with BRIO. Just make sure you buy lots of batteries too.

Two tunnels/gates with sensors that react with the smart train which doesn't look, unlike the new trains we now have here in the South West. Putting the two AA batteries, not provided, into the back requires a screw driver. Once installed, the actions are simple and exciting for the children who already used to the more straightforward lo-tech Brio.

What a truly lovely little engine - complete with an interactive tunnel.....perfect for little enquiring hands and minds. It works alone, or you can add it into any existing wooden train tracks.Great fun for young and od alike...and superb Brio quality. Totally recommended.

My grandchildren (three) each received a train and they were very pleased with them. Daddy enjoyed the trains as well. More excitingthan the Brio trains of his generation. The train is very satisfying to play with. A great addition to the other Brio trains.

If you have children that love the wooden railways, then your child will love this. The electric train chugs its way around your railway set and can even pull carriages too. You also get two small tunnels as well.
