Way sturdier than it seems, when the barriers are up it seems that a small misstep will snap them, but they are much tougher than they look. They can be lowered manually (by pulling the releases on top of the green boxes), or are lowered magnetically by the metal hubs of the wheels of passing trains. Bonus feature: each passing wheel rattles a bit and the sequence of these sounds creates a quite realistic train sound. The star off is because the magnets are a bit too strong, and will sometimes snag a passing train car (especially if it's a lighter one) and thereby disconnect half of the train.

Sturdy construction and elegant magnetic operation. Manually place the barriers in the upward position and as the wheels of an engine or carriage pass by each magnetic lever is released allowing each barrier to free fall into place. Manual release on each barrier is also available by pressing the little button on each or simply flicking the barrier itself down. A competitor does make a crossing which has a crossings alarm but the gates on that are not automated in any way and that product required batteries- you pays your money and you takes your choice.

This is a well loved level crossing - my 4 yr old grandson absolutely loved it - he has one with gates - but announced that this was a'real crossing'He loves pushing the trains slowly on the crossing and watching each barrier come down. He also enjoys pressing them back up. The barriers lowered for all the trains and trucks passing - wooden or otherwise. It doesn't matter to my grandson that the barriers don't go down before, the train approaches - as someone mentioned - he just enjoys seeing them lower as a train passes through them ...?

A birthday present for my grandson from his Great Grandmother. This is another really natty piece of track from Brio.As the train passes by, the gates drop down 'automatically' or can be lowered manually. It adds another dimension to the layouts with the road vehicles needing to stop at the level crossing and then going across the tracks when the train has gone by.Nice and sturdy manufacture and good quality as I have come to expect from Brio. Well worth the money.

Goes together well with the train tracks, is well made and our nephew (2+) seems to enjoy it. Like the way the gates move as train goes through. Only thing is they open rather than close, which is a little odd to say the least, not that a 2 year old could care less. Lets hope he doesn't grow up thinking this is normal and gets a job as a signalman!

This was a present sent to Switzerland for my grandson as he had played with an early Brio when staying in the UK. He spent hours laying out track variation and running the simple trains. It kept him very quiet and absorbed. Highly recommend this Swedish product, it's virtually indestructible and lasts for ever. Rather expensive though!

This product seems to get some unfair reviews. Ours works perfectly. Your raise the barrier with the button and it closes automatically when the train goes past. Can't wait to see what my son thinks of it. It seems fairly durable, it would get broken with rough treatment, but that's true of most toys! Really pleased with my purchase.

This is a great add on to my son's train set. Most of his set is made by Bigjigs, but this fits in fine. After ready some negative reviews about the gates not closing, I bought the battery operated Brio train - which is great, but even his other trains work with it. He loves it, and the quality is great too.

This little gem has brought me many hours of peace & quite. We live close to a level crossing and my 2yr old boy is obsessed with all things train. It is sturdy & has stood the test of my handzie little boy.Like all Brio toys, it’s built to last.Take my money Brio - take it all!!! ☺️

Really good addition to our friend's railway. He's three and is very impressed with the automatic action. Only 4 stars as adults disappointed it only works to close barriers and when the train is already at the junction...three year olds don't mind that though!

Father Christmas brought this beautiful present for my son. He was over the moon. Hours of play. Very good quality, although for me as for adult it is a bit confusing why the barier shut after the train gone not before. But my 3.5 years old loves it.

My 2 year old grandson was captivated by the fall of the gates- even more so his septuagenarian granddad. I play with it every time I go out to the track- send the (battery operated) locomotive round the circuit to close the gates!

I have bought quite a number of Brio and Bob the builder toys for Xander, my grandson, he just loves all kinds of engines and toys and is a big fan. He is only 2½, so I guess I will be buying a lot more in the future!

We all loved this especially my grandson. The only down side is that although the barriers come down as the train passes, you have to lift them up again when the train has passed. Great fun though !
