My 3-year old son is a Thomas addict. For the past 18 months we've been amassing a collection of the Thomas Wooden Railway. Suddenly, the existing wooden range has been discontinued and replaced with a larger, more babyish train collection. My son doesn't like it, so we've switched lines to this, the Thomas Take-n-Play series, which is itself a new version of Thomas Take Along, another series that has also been discontinued. I is all very confusing and easy to buy the wrong series. If you ask me, with so many different versions of Thomas, the brand licensing is a mess. HIT Entertainment, which owns the rights to the Thomas name, has given anyone with cash the right to produce toys and games with the TV /film series characters. If you own wooden tracks, you'll need the new track, which is now made of plastic. What is annoying is that none of the Take-n-Play trains work with the old wooden track. Made by the US toy company, Fisher-Price / Mattel, the Thomas Take-n-play series is very well made, with wonderful detailing that gives enormous play value to the under 5s. The die-cast engines are attractive and durable with magnetised couplings that hold well. They have a charm that's missing from the more basic wooden models. So, all in all, this is a step in the right direction. Both individual engines as well as the sets are much cheaper. Even the new plastic track is good and provides a more stable and easier to assemble line for the trains to run on. My only complaint is the lack of commonality with the wooden series, which means we'll need to buy every engine all over again - which is exactly what Fisher-price wanted to achieve, that's what makes me somewhat cynical and annoyed. However, if you're a first-time Thomas buyer or just stuck wondering which version of Thomas to get, I'd say that Take-n-Play is the one to go for. This particular item, Tidmouth Sheds, is great. Not only does it have excellent play value, it is also a useful carrying case for the various engines. There is an increasing number of new engines, including a talking Thomas. Wonderful stuff, but so far no battery-operated engine that chuffs along under its own steam. (Please produce one Fisher-Price). I expect this range to get better. In the meantime, I just hope it will have greater longevity than previous Thomas versions.

The Take-n-Play Thomas range has long been a hit in our household. My son (rapidly approaching his third birthday) has quite a collection of these trains and adores them now as much as he did when he first starting getting them well over a year ago. Other toys have fallen in and out of favour over this time but the Thomas toys have never been allowed to rest for long. His friends too have these trains and they enjoy playing together with them. They are not cheap and, at first, I was very reluctant to spend such sums on these small trains but have to admit that they are very well made toys that are able withstand the terrifying onslaught that is rough toddler play.we actually have a decent number of these trains which have been thrown around outdoors and in, shoved down slides, kicked and bashed and not a single one has broken, in fact aside from scratches and chips to paintwork, they still work as well as they did on day one.I cannot say this about many other ranges of toys. The trains have magnets at the front and rear and can therefore be joined together with other trains and/or carriages - a feature my son has always enjoyed especially. As at least one other reviewer has noted, the toys can also be used in educational play - colours, numbers etc - and we have often used them for this. There is also a bit of sentiment that has to be applied - how many generations have now loved these characters? I love to see my child playing with toys that would have recognised when I was a child. Thomas is also a gentle programme, no guns, violence etc and only nominal 'bad guys' - as such its as toddler friendly as it gets for imaginative play.As for Percy himself? Well, after Thomas he's probably the 'must-have' - being Thomas's best friend and a kindly, if timid, fellow. He features heavily in the orginal and newer books and is a central character trhoughout all incarnations of the television series. This toy's face is easily recognisable as his and his fans will be delighted by it.

My son, little many toddlers, is fascinated by Thomas, even though he’s never seen a real steam engine in the metal. This recreation of Thomas is perfectly sized for his little hands and is easily carried around (as the name implies).Despite the claims, the toy is only partially Die-Cast (the blue part above the red). The red parts and the wheels are actually plastic. This is not a bad thing and this little toy is very resilient. The points on the wheels where the axle is embedded is reinforced and looks pretty solid. I don’t expect any of them coming off any time soon. Neither do I expect either of the magnets to come out of their housings. The paint, however, has been quickly marked, with blue showing through the black paint around the edges of the roof. And points that can be rubbed on the ground are quickly marked, despite what I’ve seen written in other reviews. My son, of course, doesn’t care about any of this. However, one train on its own is not a lot of fun so he also has a James engine as well. Bizarrely the James talks and even has a little light on the front. You’d expect the poster child of the line to have the little extra touches, but Thomas seems a little basic in comparison to others in the line up. The James engine also has a coal trailer, which makes good use of the magnetic couplings, which adds to the fun.Though this little Thomas is a fine little toy, that I’d happily recommend, I’d recommend the Take-n-Play James more highly.

My daughters favourite film and favourite Thomas outing is Thomas and the Magic Railroad. She absolutely loves it. And one of her favourite Thomas characters of all time is Diesel 10 so buying this was a no brainer. And she does love it, she loves creating adventures and chases around the living room, involving me so im consistently attacked in my own living room by Diesel 10, often having to be saved by who ever is on hand. Its great fun and my daughter does love the product. The claw rotates but doesn't extend or hinge up or down, Pinchy doesn't open and close either which wasn't to much of an issue as its her first Diesel 10 toy so she doesn't know any different and gets along fine using her imagination instead. His paint work and livery have remained intact despite being heavily and roughly played with which is also a good thing. The reason this only gets four stars instead of size is purely because of the size. Diesel 10 is classed as a large engine when purchased so when bought in stores you pay the same price you would for Gordon or Henry. Diesel 10 however is the same size as Thomas and the other small engines. This is disappointing for adults that are forking out the money for him and i could see it disappointing older fans who notice the huge difference in size and end up with a stunted Diesel 10 instead of an intimidating one. He is after all, the big baddy.

Just bought this for my 3 year old's birthday. She unwrapped it and lost any interest in opening her other presents as soon as she saw it! She absolutely loves it and I'm so glad I made the decision to buy it. It's a bit smaller than I thought it'd be, but that's a good thing as we don't have a lot of floor space in our tiny flat. That said, she loves pushing her engines around the looped tracked again and again, so it is obviously big enough for her.She hasn't quite got the hang of the turntable. She knows how to turn it, but doesn't quite line it up properly. This is more of a frustration for me though than her, so I'm sure this will come in time! The only disappointing thing for me is that the longer take 'n'play engines, such as Gordon which comes with the coal carriage, doesn't fit into the shed with much ease. You can just about push it in and shut the door but it falls on it's side inside the shed. This did frustrate her quite a lot at first, but I wouldn't say it spoilt her enjoyment of playing with it. The only thing is that you may want to buy a couple of the single engines to start with which will fit in. Interestingly, the James engine (also with a carriage) does fit but James is slightly shortly than Gordon! The shed does come with a Thomas engine too.If you're not sure, like I was, just go for it. Best decision I've made.

My son has a huge collection of Thomas the tank engine toys, movies and accessories and I must say that this is one of his most favorite. Tidmouth sheds is a recognizable element of all of the cartoons and movies and every time he see's that familiar building he proclaims "I have that, that is mine!".This particular track set is the embodiment of the "Take-n-Play" brand of Thomas toys. There could be nothing more portable and convenient. Unlike other sets (I swear I have 4 different types of track!), this track is permanently fixed together and easily collapses and folds underneath the building for each storage and quick unfolding when it is time to play again. There is a rotator switch before the sheds to allow each engine entrance into their personal shed for the night. Each of the five doors opens and the trains glide right in. You can also open the back of the shed and can even store even more. I think at least two fit behind each of the five doors and there is definitely plenty of room. The set is well made and durable and despite abuse still looks brand new. I highly recommend this set over any of the others in the Thomas collection.

It would seem that 'Thomas the Tank Engine' is here to stay as each generation of children seem to be enthused by the jolly blue engine and his friends.  One of the reasons for this is that the quality of the character has yet to sullied; the TV show is still great fun, the film was ok and the toys - well they remain pretty excellent. The 'Take-n-Play' range is a great example of this; a set of die-cast models of the book's and show's favorite characters.  In the case of 'Percy' you get a solid metal version of Tom's best mate.  The model itself is excellent, well designed and painted well.  This is a toy that is likely to get some battering in its time, so it is nice to come out of the packet looking so good.It will eventually chip, but this should take a while.'Percy' is part of a larger collection of toys and to get the most out of it you will want to buy other characters and playsets as the magnets let you link trains and carriages together.  This will become a costly venture by the end, but the range has the quality you would expect from 'Fisher-Price'.  A great toy, that may set you back a little when you expand the range.

I bought this to expand on my son's Thomas Take Along range, mainly to serve as a storage area for his trains, and also to let him take it to Grandma's to play with. The sale price of around £23 is probably about the right value for money. The build quality is pretty good, and it is clearly constructed to withstand the rigours of pre-schooler play. It works equally well as part of a bigger layout as well as a self-sufficient, portable toy.It does have a couple of niggles though. Firstly, the shed doors are easily removed (and therefore easily lost) and also too close together, making it difficult to have five engines poking their faces out at any given time. Secondly, although the track folds under the building quite neatly, the clips that are used to hold it in place are a little loose (especially the catch at the back) and often give way. That said, our kids thoroughly enjoy playing with it. It is a well detailed building with a turntable that is manually controlled to let the engines out of the shed, and is easy enough for little fingers to manipulate. A quality toy providing hours of fun. Recommended.

My 24 month year old loves this. The recomendation is for 3 years plus, but my 25 month year old loves turning the turn table, putting Thomas in and taking him out of the sheds, saying night night to him, opening and closing the doors (front and back) etc.Nothing to assemble, the track just folds out and away when finished, which is a great space saver when stored and keeps any engines you might want to collect all together.THERE'S JUST ONE ENGINE with this and most other packs, which they state, fair enough, but you always see a number of trains being used on the packing images.Durable? Yeeesss,,,, but there are always some children who can break any plastic toy (except lego). Before buyying this,I bought the Thomas 17 piece Starter Pack. i needn't have bothered as this one has its own track, and is bigger.Educational? Not if you leave them alone to play, but if you sit with them and explain it all, yes, a very good educational aid.

My son follows Thomas the Tank, he is 20 months old and when he grows up he wants to be a train I am sure. I have 6 or 7 of these now. They are age ranged from 36 months but my son competently plays with these and the worst thing that has ever happened is we lost one when we went shopping! He failed to mention it at the time. Stepney is one of the older engines from about 20 years ago I think, I don't think he looks all that good, he is an odd colour and he has a big nose, but because we have old dvds and new ones he is a regular in our house. I will confess he has been in the bath several times and as a result there is paint chipped and missing but what else can you do when your son thinks Sodor is around every corner.I don't think these will be any good to anyone when he has done with them but as long as he enjoys them right now I am happy for him to cover him in bubbles and shout oh noo! in his dramatic little voice. These are ace!

We bought this for our son when he was 2.5 year old. He I'd a total Thomas addict. Loves anything Thomas. This toy has its positives and negatives. Negatives first: turntable is quite stiff to turn and did cause a lot of frustration for my son until he'd mastered the art of using it! Doors are also a bit fiddly to open. The clip that holds the track folded away is a bit flimsy and opens a bit too easily at times.Positive points: ideal to store the trains in to carry anywhere without loosing any! Small when folded up so can be taken anywhere u need them to be entertained! My son adores this toy and there isn't a day goes by he doesn't play with it or the trains. Its quite an expensive toy but I think its a brilliant purchase.Ours has been on holiday with us, to weddings, friends houses. Keeps them entertained for ages and very good at encouraging role play. Would give 5 stars if it wasn't for the few negatives I mentioned.

I bought this for my 4 year old grandson as he loves Thomas The Tank and he played with it straight away. Next time he came to visit it was the first thing he asked for. I could not get the extension tracks on line immediately but bought them when in New York last week. When he visited yesterday he seemed pleased there was extra track and recognised the new engine Douglas that I had also bought to make up the 5 needed for each shed. I put each engine's name above the shed door and now he takes delight in putting them into their very own shed. I found out that the 2 end sheds have a buffer so if you have an engine with a tender although they sort of fit in the shed the door will not close, not a big problem as the other 3 sheds do not have buffers. I would recommend this toy if your child loves Thomas the Tank. For my grandson's Xmas i intend adding Cranky at the Docks.

My Daughter has been really disappointed in the lack of appearances by a certain female character by the name of Lady. Rosie has slightly filled that void and provides the diversity I was hoping for among her predominantly male collection of trains. Rosie herself although she doesn't feel as solid as the other trains my daughter currently has in her possession, has withstood the test of time better than any of the other trains in the collection. Despite being one of the first trains bought for my daughter alongside Thomas, Gordon, Percy, Luke and Stanley and being played with equally as much as the others her paintwork/ Livery is still fully intact, no scratches, wheels cracks or face wobbles which is more than I can say of Thomas (We've had to have three of him).Id definitely recommend her to children and parents alike.

My daughter has several Percys seeing as him and Thomas are usually released alongside other sets and packs. This is something to keep in mind if your also looking at buying some Take n play packs. The positive side is we have plenty of spare Percys. The product itself is sturdy and robust. Unlike other trains his livery is has withstood the tests of time and after extended amounts of play from my daughter the paintwork is still intact and unworn. This has been my main issue with some of the other trains in the Take n Play franchise so it does confuse me that some trains seem to wear more than others. Percy however as one of the classic favourites proves to be a reliable product capable of entertaining my daughter .Which lets face it, is the most important thing.

We bought this for our 2 year old son after watching him play with it in a toy store. He's not a Thomas superfan by any mannner of means but he absolutely loves it. He loves opening and closing the small doors - that's such a boy thing! - and he loves parking the engines away at night time. One of the best things about it how portable it is, he carries it off to his Gran's like it's his own little briefcase. We've supplemented it with little freebies that come with the Thomas comic, things like a miniature Fat Controller and some little trees. They all fit inside and are carried wherever he wants to take them. We've had it for almost a year now and it's still one of his favourite toys.Well worth the money, sometimes the simplest toys are the most engaging.
