I am slightly disappointed in the quality of this engine, although it does look very smart. The axle on the back wheels (the ones that drive it) is quite thin, and the wheels then bend when the train is dropped (which happens quite a lot when you have a youngster playing with it). I would expect the axle to be a bit more robust. My children love the light at the front, which glows quite dimly but still looks really cool, and the train is quite powerful - we've towed about 4 carriages up and down a brio slope/hill track without any trouble. With a really decent AAA battery, it lasts about 4 hours full run-time, so be prepared to use up quite a few.The switch on the top is quite flimsy and is quite easy to switch on by mistake (either forwards or reverse), so you need to make sure it doesn't go in the train/track box after playtime, but just keep it separate. If it weren't for the switch and the axle, I would give it 5 stars.

This train is pretty good, my son received it as a Christmas present, and it was one of his favourites and has certainly had the most use!To the reviewers complaining about battery life, I would certainly recommend buying some AAA rechargeable batteries, the life is about 1 hour of continuous use, and you will find you are much more relaxed about it going constantly in circles if you don't have to keep buying new ones. After about 1 month the rubber is starting to wear out on the tyres, but overall the torque is pretty good and the train is able to pull two carriages up the hill of the Brio Suspension Bridge. It doesn't move very fast, but I really don't see that as a problem, the power is going to the torque,if it went any faster it wouldn't be able to pull as much on a single AAA battery. Also the light is not very bright!

It's a beautiful engine. My children love it. It has a nice front light. It is capable of climbing moderately steep BRIO bridges, but not the very steep ones and certainly not when pulling wagons, but this even happens to real life trains. The worst part about it is that it does not turn off by itself, so with small children you have to keep replacing the batteries as the engine does not make much noise and it keeps being left on. It is hard to turn it off, with such a small distance between forward, off and back.

This was bought for the "Traditional Wooden Train Set", see my review of this. Some people have complained of limited battery life but I found it lasted at least a couple of play sessions on Duracel batteries. It chugs round towing a couple of coaches quite happily. When the battery is getting low it is quite interesting to see it struggle up to the bridge, sometimes it stops, girds up its loins then carries on. It then rushes pell-mell down the downward slope.

This is a very sweet engine. Goes lovely and slowly and is very quiet. Can pull 10 or so carriages, even over a bridge although doesn't make it once the batteries run low. My son loved it for a few months but strangely has now gone back to pulling and pushing trains himself. Don't understand the reference to autostop and start.Fully recommend this for the price. only uses 1 AA battery and even rechargeables last a days worth of continuous play.

Was concerned by other review underlying no enough power, of course Brio could offer a 3volts version, with Aa battery type instead of 1.5vwith Aaa battery however this one replace perfectly the original one and did not have issue with the power pulling up to the hill 5 vagons, i used good battery though with of 800mha tomorrow will test 11000mha for longer life and higher power

Lovely wooden train - grippy back wheels means it pulls carriages even uphill! Not overly speedy but perfect for my 4 year old. Happily pulls 3-4 carriages no issue. Easy to change battery. Also goes forwards and backwards which is an added bonus! Light is a cute addition but as 4yr old plays in the daylight I can't say its overly necessary.

Perfect addition to the Brio train sets. Good speed for young children. The only problem is that it goes through batteries quite quickly. This is mainly due to children leaving it in the 'on' position all the time. When clearing up always check that the engine is there. I have found it two days later under the sofa with battery dead!

Strictly for the father to play with, not the child. Let's face it, the father has to give the circuit a test run, with the bridges and sidings and tunnels and carriages.......! The screw is a bit fiddly to turn when replacing the batteries (use rechargeable), other than that a brilliant toy.Must dash, I'm building a bridge.......

Provided my daughter with plenty of entertainment and the battery lasts pretty well. Train goes forward and backwards and doesn’t make too much noise while running. It can pull several carriages with it and makes a steady descent thanks to the wheels being edged in rubber. Great value and perfect addition to any train set.

Very good toy train for kids to play with. Bought as a first battery train for our grandson to add to his fathers Brio set ( bought 30 years ago and still excellent) . He loves playing with it and is compatible with the other trains and carriages. It is not fast though and it does go through batteries quickly.

A fun toy but breaks easily if pushed along the track. An adult would understand that it’s not designed to be pushed but explaining it to a 3yr old is harder. Not the fault of the manufacturer but something to be mindful of if allowing young children to play with it.

The battery operated train has kept the players much more interested than previously, and has been a good purchase. The only thing to watch for is making sure the kids switch it off when finished, or it quickly runs the battery down. Otherwise very pleased with it

Compatble with all wooden tracks, brio, thomas, big-jigs. Can go forward and reverse and has a light at the front, ideal next step from pushing by hand, easy to use, but remember to turn off after use as its a bit greedy on the batteries. Great for a 3-4 year old.

a lovely train which made my 2 and a half year old grandson very happy indeed, only gripe is that the stickers come off quite easily but the train is very good quality and looks good without them. Also fits perfectly on the Thomas the tank engine wooden track.
