We have lots of wooden track that has been combined together from different brands and it fits on all of it (big jigs mostly). If you have a flat track with large sweeping corners it can pull a lot of carriages (we’ve had up to 11 at the same time though it does move very slowly with this amount of weight).Battery life is fantastic ... haven’t measured it but it gets used extensively every day and we’re only on the second battery after a month. There were some much cheaper options but a lot of reviews complained about false economy having to change batteries after just a couple of hours. Glad we went with this now. It’s also very quiet. A welcome relief. However, we have some sloped /hill sections and it really does struggle. It can manage them just fine by itself but when you add carriages it tends to struggle with the weight. We can usually only get away with one or two carriages for track layouts with those bits included. We also have some tighter corners (2-3inch in length as opposed to the larger 6inch curves). It doesn’t handle them well at all even on its own - it simply falls off the track.Only one axle is driven. The other two are just free-wheeling. This can be a problem as it tends to lift the driven wheels off the track particularly on the hills and it just stops moving until you give it a push.Basically if you have mostly flat track and large corner pieces this is fantastic and it won’t cost you a fortune in batteries. My son loves it regardless of its limitations, so that’s the main thing.

This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my 3 year old son. The Brio range is quite expensive so we normally go for a cheaper brand when it comes to wooden railway accessories. In this case however, I'd definitely recommend paying more for a quality product. This little train looks good and runs well. The unit can pull 2-3 carriages up a slope on the track and doesn't struggle at all. It can run forwards and backwards and has a little white light at the front. The first batteries I used lasted about 6-7 weeks with reasonable use which I'm more than happy with. It's our first motorised engine for our wooden train set and I'd definitely buy this again in different styles.Pros:- looks good-easily pulls a couple of carriages- decent battery life- good quality feelCons:- quite expensive for one engine

Lovely train from the infamous Brio! Little lad loves it, the only gripe I've got with this train is: it cannot be pushed free hand, it doesn't roll or have an option to put it in free roll mode unlike other trains. Never the less it pulls over 6 of our carriages which is impressive.4/5 stars due to the fact you can't push it, it has it be turned on (forward or backwards)EDIT: Nearly 3 years later, the rubber which is located on the drive wheels has worn down the train can no longer climb the bridges without assistance, it takes him a little go but can manage to clamber up on a solo travel, just so people are aware, we've used "Stong Train" a fair bit, seems like buying a set of unofficial rubber tracks is the only solution since Brio don't have a spares department

The Good: bought the Brio Freight engine, with both front and rear connectors this engine can work in conjunction with another. The push/pull feature is great, placing this car in the middle of a 12 car chain (working with the Brio Big Red) my 3 year old son delights as the train navigates his tracks. The Bad: as suggested in other posts the engine did stop working, however the vendors customer service is exceptional and we are happy with the replacement.Note# With any battery powered engines they seem to struggle to mount ramps, especially when attached to more than two cars. we cut strips of fabric tape and lined the wheel grooves on the ramps and now the wheels do not slip and the trainshappily traverse my sons most creative layouts.

This engine is quite different from the Mighty Red or Green from Brio, and I think it's good this way. It only use one AA battery (2 AAA for the Mighty one), but can pull two wagons and climb without problem. You can also put it in the centre of the the convoy to help other engines to pull. It is that versatile. It has lights but no sound...which my son misses. It is also gorgeous and the switch forward and reverse though discreet it is easy to operate. Overall, it is a good engine and an excellent complement to the mighty's. And in a world full of cheap and low quality toys, this Brio is awesome, it seams well done and sturdy. So the price seems adequate.

It is a solid design, but I have a couple of minor complaints: it is rather slow (perhaps not necessarily a bad thing if your toddler is still small enough), and not quite powerful enough to pull other, especially wooden, carriages. We don't have any bridge track pieces yet to see how much it can pull up. We only have wooden carriages right now - perhaps other plastic carriages will work better together. But overall both the boy and I liked it :)

One of the only battery charged Brio trains that glides up and over Brio bridges with ease. It's able to carry a few carriages behind it too.A couple of niggles... it doesn't free roll and the operation panel on top of the train is difficult to click forwards or backwards. Hard for little hands and big hands. Operates using 1xAA battery which isn't provided and a pain to put in. For this i give it 4 stars.Hope this helps!

Four year old and two year old grandsons have had many hours of fun and we are still on the original battery. Has some problems with tight bends if track is uneven though will then set off "cross country" on the carpet. There is a limit to how long a train it will pull up the viaduct without assistance but none of this has detracted from the enjoyment the boys have had. A really good addition to a wooden track railway.

excellent quality, struggles on some tight (small) curves (especially if they aren't aligned correctly) but ok on the normal wider Brio curves. More capable pulling 'long end, No 7' first (driven wheels at back), our son has had it pulling up to eight trucks up/down ramps. The 'Forward-OFF-Reverse switch is easy for small hands to operate, but you need a screwdriver to change the single AA battery.

This is by far the most powerful train engine we have. It is probably because it uses AA batteries instead of AAA. It leaves the bigjigs well behind and is daster than our brio yellow engine too. I am mot sure why other reviewer had a problem wirh it climbing hills and bridges. Mine does it without breaking sweat. It is a good addition to my kids train collection.

Another solid brio product. For 17 pounds you'd expect good quality and you get it. It runs forwards and backwards with decent power. If you find it stopping then check because there's a little button underneath that stops it. I assume it is part of some sort of fancy control system you can buy. If your track is unever then it can stop the motor.

Nice and sturdy design, good torque and speed. The only annoying problem is that it derails too often, even where much cheaper locos have no problem whatsoever. This is mainly due to the traction being in the rear wheels, so the front wheels tend to climb the rails too easily. Brio should know better than this, especially for this price mark.

Our 2 year old loves this train as it has switches!! It is very durable and robust but the only down side is that it is silent so it is easy to forget to turn off and before you know it, the battery has all been used up. The product is otherwise brilliant and has brought lots of pleasure. It arrived quickly and was as described.

These engines are great because they can push and pull (the other battery engines only have a rear coupling, so they can only pull). This let's my son build extra long trains because this engine can go in the middle (just like a real freight train). Uses a single AA cell, so is quite economical.

Much as I prefer steam locos, I really liked this because it had magnets at both ends and a headlight. Is powerful enough to pull several carriages over a bridge forward, doesn't seem as powerful backwards though. Only just fits under the bridge! Both my 4 year old and 18 month old like it.
